"Why don't you just buy her a pair of pretty earrings, or bake something? You're not an alchemist, Callum; it's time to give up."

Corine didn't understand. She wouldn't possibly know how much this one thing meant to him, or how drive he was to see it succeed. Callum would keep trying to craft that elixir until either his child was born, thus rendering it useless as Eema wouldn't need the assistance anymore, or he got it right. Between his alchemy attempts and his training the hybrid was running full tilt these days with little in the way of down time. He had to get it right! And this time he would.

This time he had fresh herbs instead of dried. They were more expensive, and some he had to find on his own, but Callum knew it would help. He had Corine to clarify the ingredients list, which helped in pointing out what he'd done wrong last time. This time he was more apprehensive, but third time was the charm, right?

Callum pinched off bits of Sweetspire to add to his concoction, and sat on the edge of the table, working the mixture into another paste in his mortar. He stuck his finger into the bluish mix, already quite pleased that at least it was the right color this time. When his finger didn't automatically have a bad reaction Callum felt his confidence rise. Perhaps he was better at this than he thought.

Corine chose that moment to come into the area. She looked over his work, murmuring under her breath before clucking her tongue. "Well, it's not perfect, but it's acceptable...if you want her to throw up."

"What?!"

"You added too much bloodroot; it's toxic in large doses."

Toxic?! Callum slipped off the table and made his way back to entryway, fully intent on dumping out this latest attempt, much like the others. He wasn't trying to kill Eema, or his child!, but it seemed as if all his attempts to help were bound to go awry.

As much as he hated to give up now, Callum knew it was for the best.
