The day had begun with a noble purpose, and good intentions. None could say that Callum's heart wasn't in the right place when he purchased herbs and other such materials needed for alchemy. Corine had explained the process to him in some detail, and had given him a sort of written guide to go on. He hadn't known she even knew what to do until that moment. Would his grandmother never cease to amaze him?
He wasn't surprised to return home and find it empty. Nimueh was away in Zena, and Corine was likely chatting it up with her friends on a porch some where. It gave him full run of the dining area, which was needed. Callum spread his materials out onto the table, looking each over as if they were rare stones he was afraid to touch. This was his first time testing alchemy; surely it couldn't be too hard?
Picking up Corine's manual, he flipped through to a pain relieving elixir. It wouldn't eliminate Eema's labor pains, but at least he could help her through it. Mixing the ingredients together almost felt like cooking, or some sort of magic. In the beginning it was a fun, light hearted affair but as his concoction turned darker, taking on an almost black hue and a horrid smell Callum knew he had taken a wrong turn. "Maybe I should have used more...mushrooms? Is that what this says? It's smudged, did she spill something on it?" He pinched off what looked to be purple spores into the mixture, along with a plant that had pink flowers he couldn't help think smelled a lot like honey. It all seemed rather strange to him, but as he was no mage, who was he to judge?
When it bubbled at him despite being no where near heat he knew it was time to throw it out. "Next time," he murmured, looking back to the book, "Next time I'll get it right."
