Nodus Tollens - the realization that the plot of your life doesn't make sense to you anymore.

Things that surprised Zac, were becoming far, far too common. He didn’t think there had been any -solid- day since he’d been sent to ‘Other Ashdown’ that something hadn’t happened, or he hadn’t heard something strange. He was sure as well that he wasn’t even -close- to hearing, or learning about all of it. So many secrets, so damned many secrets he’d started keeping some of his own, though he wished as well that he’d kept a few more.

He finished transcribing the things that had happened the last few days, everything that happened including what little information he had on what happened to Autumn. He went so far as to pull up an actual map of the town, a cartoonish thing meant for tourists, he’d blanked out the places that he knew for sure you couldn’t get to… pasted a picture of a floating island from some video game on top of the library, and circled the house on the hill.

Now… now he wanted to review what he’d gotten from books, and what little he’d gotten from talking to other people.

What topic would Zac like to review first?

Zac sighed, staring down at his notes. Three choices were the most clear, but one stood out in his mind given his...recent encounter, and Autumn in the hospital.
What DID he know about the burning man?
Other than he -didn't- know how he got out of "Other Ashdown".

The burning man first appeared to Zac and Autumn in the form of a deer that shifted itself into a cage and then to its natural form, implying he can shapeshift. It spoke in a posh British accent, referring to Zac as 'dear boy', and seemed to prefer a sing-song tone to anything more... well, adult.

It wanted Zac's heart, and when it didn't get it, it tried to burn Autumn's.

Zac made a note in the margins that he really needed to add what little he knew to the creature book that he and Autumn were plotting.
The ‘Dear Boy’ - it just seemed an uncommon turn of phrase. Very…british almost but he couldn’t remember even Jeremiah using it before.

It raised questions too that he had no answers for abut why… why it wanted hearts, and why it burned Autumn in revenge rather than hurt -him-? Preserving the desired heart?

Related to the ‘memory’ of ice? Who knew.

He shook his head and flipped to what he had for the Shore Family Trust. That at least felt more…solid, if only because you could visit the house.

Sort of…

The Shore Family Trust is the party that owns the home where Sunny lives. They also run several charitable organizations, including a school in Ipswich. The house's caretaker, Renard, also directs the trust; he and his husband have a sizable collection of paintings by A. Prividaniye, though there were several rooms that Zac did not see that could house other works.

There are paintings in the house: one that resembles Jeremiah, and one that looks rather familiar, though it can't be placed.

Renard's husband, Liam, is the last descendent of the Shore Family Trust.

Previously he’d marked down the familiar painting as sunny. Reviewing his notes though, and the photos on his phone he crossed out the places where he’d been more ‘certain’ about that. It was familiar, yes but why was harder to say. He still -suspected- it was Sunny, but suspicions meant very little. It meant roughly as much as ‘normal’ did anymore.

The other painting still looked like Jeremiah, but beyond that he had nothing, and unless he ran into Liam again, he doubted he had even a slim chance of seeing the rest of the paintings. Confronting Renard on the fact he’d…well, lied about the numbers seemed a rather poor idea, especially since he was never meant to have been in a place to see them

All of this of course brought him back to Sunny… He suspected she lived in the house, but…

He still needed to try and figure out what her part was with the flip side of Ashdown.

Sunny's involvement in Ashdown can be traced back to the early 1600s, judging by a woodcut of an "indian girl". An account of several murders was near that portrait, but there's not necessarily anything to relate Sunny to Princess Keen.

An interesting thing is Sunny's picture in a town history: that hateful stare, the mourning gown. Like she'd caught someone observing a private moment.

But she lives in that house, with those portraits. Zac has portraits of her living space. Maybe he'd like to examine those.

Why not then.... He flipped to the pictures of the attic- he was not he admitted expecting much. Research was so much easier when people had already done the work and laid it out in books. But... Despite his better judgment- there was a thrill to this.

The cell phone pictures aren't particularly full of detail, but there's such a familiar shape in one of them that Zac can't help but look at it.

It's Tenebrous, half-submerged in a pile of pillows, hours before Zac gave the plushie away.

What... The.... Hell

HE hadn't even been sure of giving his plush companion away. But there he was. Too familiar to be anything else. Did Sunny have two Tenebrous now? How the hell could he even bring that up?

Hi I broke into your room in that creepy house and saw my bear before I gave it to you. Is that to do with this 'history repeats itself bull and the person I almost reminded you of? Or are you a nicotine addicted time lord??

That conversation played out in his head like a lead balloon trying to take flight. He thumped this head on the desk and gave a groan.

Seemed like he was going to have to risk the wrath of Sunny... Eventually.

Maybe with... Cigarettes... God she was probably drowning in them. He was doomed... No wonder curiosity killed proverbial cats.
