"Something happened in other ashdown, Algie." Jeremiah made use of his bluetooth headset instead of having to pin his cell phone to his shoulder with his cheek. It might not hurt if he did so, some part of him already paranoid that if he did a wrong thing the pain would come back. It always did and in varying levels.
He could hear Algie sucking in a breath through his teeth.
"Apparently something did not take kindly to being turned down on a deal. It trapped Zac and Autumn, tried to make a deal with him. He did not take it and hurt Autumn bad enough she had to be taken to the hospital," he continued on.
"Jesus." The other man's voice sounded hoarse for a momen. "I assume you're on the way there?"
"Yes," he replied, and then in another breath, "and I don't expect you to come with me, snowflake." Jeremiah heard an exhale, an almost sigh of relief. He knew about the other man's issues with hospitals - especially after what had happened with his mother. Never mind that Zac was his son, not Algie's, and that Autumn was still more of an acquaintance than a friend.
"Just call me when you've got more details. I'm going to finish closing up the shop and then head home." Algie paused, the line silent for several heartbeats. "I'll be waiting at home with the kittens, Miah."
That was as close as to bring your arse home in one piece as Algie would say over the phone.

Jeremiah was heading into the sliding doors of the Ashdown hospital's emergency doors when he noticed it out of the corner of his eye. It was a glimmer of something and before he could turn around and inspect it, someone bumped into him.
"Sorry!" a nurse exclaimed before they disappeared through the second set of doors to where they had patients. He did not even get a second to be offended.
It did not matter, Jeremiah was already turned to look behind him but whatever it was he thought he had saw was gone. Nothing looked odd or out of place.
Thank ******** goodness because the idea that this place would not be safe was another weight in his stomach he did not need.

"What do you mean you have no idea where he went? He was just here not even twenty minutes ago!" Jeremiah's voice was not loud. This was the detective who did not yell but spoke well and hard and the man working the emergency room desk flinched.
"He carried in the young girl a while ago and then … I don't know." The young man floundered, face flushed because he could absolutely could not remember what had happened to the one who had brought in the young woman with severe smoke inhalation damage.
Blue-green eyes narrowed, the young man holding his hands up and waving them side to side. It only lasted a moment longer before Jeremiah merely smiled at him.
It was not a good smile.
It was that smile.
The young man swallowed and said very quietly. "Should I go get someone with more authority?"
"Absolutely," Jeremiah replied, "because as you cannot help me with this. I need to know about the young woman he brought it."
"That really is-"
Jeremiah's badge was slammed down on the counter. "No. Really. Go. Get. Someone. Now."
Algie was absolutely right. Sometimes he was overdramatic.

It had not taken much to get to someone who knew something. Someone who could tell him facts, give him an idea of just what was wrong with Autumn. He caught sight of her in the ICU for the limited time he had been able to abuse status to at least see her.
A weight settled uncomfortably in his gut.
Perhaps it had been one thing when it had been him who had been injured. Him with his back and the cold and the pain that did not go away but this was someone else and the reality of that was terrible. It could have been Zac, it could have been Algie, it could have been -
"Detective?" the doctor inquired, a hand reaching out to touch him. Jeremiah stepped back out of reflex of not wanting to be touched.
"Yes?" he responded before he remembered what he had been after. "My apologies, I was lost in my thoughts a moment. I've got all the information I need for the moment, thank you." With a polite nod, Jeremiah turned and made his way out of the hospital.
The chill was worse than normal but at least Jeremiah had a plan of action.
