The bookstore. It was as close as most people ever get to going on an adventure; sometimes it was as close as people got to leaving the place where they were born. Also, more sadly, the outside of a bookstore was sometimes the closest some people got to experiencing the proper use of their own mother tongue.

Oriahull was a reader. Her family was not big on reading; preferring to experience their own adventures first hand. Oriahull also preferred this, but in her ramblings and wanderings she often traveled to places so far away that it was best for safety's sake to learn a bit about them beforehand. Thus, she was very familiar with the travel book and geography sections.

However, even the most wide-ranging of explorers had to rest some time. Oriahull liked to rest with a book from the fiction section; an adventure book. Sometimes science fiction, sometimes fantasy, sometimes real world fiction; a book which allowed her to experience the adventures of someone else.

This was a reason why, despite Verdis Bina owning the most extensive collection of non magic books outside of the Kaiba manion, Oriahull was not very close to her; all of Verdis Bina's books were romances.

Inkfoot owned this bookstore and she didn't mind who came in, as long as they browsed quietly, paid promptly, and didn't bother her unless they wanted to ask about something. Her store was crawling with signs; festooned with them. Oriahull read signs like;

Books being released in MAY
Fifty Shades of Taupe (decorating)
The Dangers of Breathing Air
The Artifact Master Postponed
Shadows of the Island

Inkfoot wrote these signs by hand in impressive calligraphy; it was well known that she didn't read the books she sold at all, but used the quiet atmosphere to practice her art.

Today, Oriahull was looking for a book on Kiraban, but also for some fantasy she could read quickly while she prepared for a long journey. She still wasn't sure about Kiraban. She might decide to go to the land of the Jewelslip Flower, but Yarrow said it was a bit of a disappointment. She browsed the geography section, waiting for a book to pop out at her, as usual.

Lucinda had finally finished the fifteen books her mother had told her to read, not that she wouldn't have anyway just that she was given a small reward by her if she did so within three months and she was able to do that within a month and a half, not really hard to do when you don't go out but now she was bored and she wanted something of the romantic fantasy genre so she was off to the book store to see what she could find in the way of such a book. Opening the door she stepped inside and went straight to the fantasy section to see if there was anything she could find and then maybe, since she was feeling a little hungry, she pondered about getting something for lunch from the cafe a few doors down, she could kill for a slice of rich chocolate mud cake and a hot chai latte right now.

Oriahull glanced up, instinctively on the alert as, from the corner of her eye, she saw a flame. Upon further inspection, it was just the marking on another dragon who had passed the mouth of the geography book aisle. She was heading to the fantasy section.

Oriahull paused, thinking that she might as well ask if there was something good out, and then return to her search for a book on Kiraban. The only think she had found was a very racist book by a Kirabanian which mentioned every few chapters about how much the Kirabanians hated and mistrusted dragons after some vague incident with their first king and all their children being stolen by goblins. Oriahull was now very certain she did not want to go there.

She approached the flame-marked dragon and said quietly, "Hi. Found anything good?"

As the dragon signed she looked up at the other other "hi and no, at least not what I want, I have read all these and even some I didn't want to but was bored and so I read them any way and I was right in not touching them as they were not very exciting books" she said as she stifled a yawn. "I think I might go check in the next town over but I do want something to read so I might pick something up here just to tie me over for a couple of days" she said as she turned around and faced the other "though first I might get some food before I venture around the rest of the shop, I am starving."

Oriahull blinked slowly. It was a lot to take in, all that this dragon said, at such speed. "There's a cafe down the road," she said. "If you don't mind it being run by Druid; he's from the Magic Guild and decided to turn his potions expertise into making coffee. He looks a bit intimidating."

This was a pretty fine thing to say coming from a large, intimidating dragon with battle scars and 'Dark' written on her in Kanji.

She wasn't quite sure why she was suggesting to leave the bookshop, but is seemed like anyone in a bookshop had a camaraderie between others in the shop and... Oriahull would like a friend to talk to who wasn't always doing something with their girlfriend or boyfriend.

"I would be able to recommend you a book you might not have read if you wanted to tell me what you like. My name's Oriahull."

"That was the cafe I was thinking about, I don't care who runs it as long as there is food and coffee" she said as she ho hummed a little as she looked at the book shelf once more than back at the other "hi, I am Lucinda, nice to meet you" she said as she walked away from the genre she was in "I was looking for romance fantasy but this shop has nothing i want so I guess the next would be murder mystery, something like a whodunit set in the 17th/18th century, timely estate, a bit of a scare to it, you know, a good murder mystery that one can get lost in".

"I'll be back," said Oriahull to Inkfoot as they passed the counter on the way out. Inkfoot made no response, which was better than Inkfoot being angry that Oriahull had interrupted her art.

"I'm not a big reader of murder," she said to Lucinda as they walked down the street. "I have finished a very easy to read mystery involving a stolen magical jewel set in Regency, which I found transporting. It's a bit of a romance, too (what book set in Regency isn't?), and I'm not a big fan of romance, but I enjoyed it very much. I prefer adventure novels."

They walked together into the steamy, delicious smelling atmosphere of the cafe. Oriahull ordered a hot chocolate in two cups with a cup of hot water and a cheese pastry.

Druid seemed a little miffed until he realised that Oriahull wasn't going to share a hot chocolate with Lucinda. He was terrible at remembering people's drinks, but Oriahull didn't come in very often. She found the hot chocolate too strong and so she ordered it with extra water to dilute it.

As the two exited the shop she grinned at the other "fave genre, I love adventure books the most! I love getting lost in them but I tend to finish them way too fast, the last one I read has fifty-eight chapters, roughly 20 odd pages per chapter so forty pages total and I find I she'd that I two weeks, I was stupid and didn't get that much sleep but it was totally worth it! " she said as they had walked into the cafe and loomed in the display window then looked at the server after the other had ordered.

"I will take a Chai latte in a bowl, a large pece of your chocolate mud cake and three servings of your macaroni and cheese please" she paid and took the number for their table "where do you want to sit?"" She asked as she looked around the cafe.

"it's a bit stuffy in here," observed Oriahull. "I would like to sit outside."

Oriahull also noticed that Lucinda was ordering quite a lot of food. Oriahull did not carry a lot of money; in fact, around Tinderton, most of the things she bought were added to a family account paid up every two weeks by her father. The shopkeepers said they preferred it this way; Oriahull's older sister, Rage, had put the fear of... Well, Rage, into them and even though she had not started any fights, the people were well away that the family up the mountain could do some damage and they didn't want to risk their safety by asking a dragon for money if they didn't have any. Everyone knew Jin Kyoshi, Oriahull's father, was good for the payment.

Oriahull wondered how much money Lucinda carried around with her and resolved to be very careful of sneak thieves around her. The practiced traveller, Oriahull new very well that people who bought a lot were robbed the most often. The fact that Lucinda intended to eat all of that stuff did not phase Oriahull in the slightest; she simply assumed that Lucinda, in the same way as she had just confessed to losing sleep for the sake of a book, she had also forgotten to eat.

"Which book was that?" she asked. "I like to read, but I tend to have short sessions of reading in between traveling. If I have time to wish I had a book in my travels, I am not doing a good job of being an adventurer and probably won't return to wherever I am. That's how I feel about Flutter Valley. Very oring pace."

"That's fine with me, I prefer the outside any way, as a dragon it doesn't matter how big the room you still feel like it isn't enough space, we are one of the bigger breeds so it isn't handy in confined spaces" she said as she walked over to a table near the side of the shop but in the sun, thankfully an umbrella blocked the sun. "The book was called Cold blood but it has a sequel called Stone Cold by Dreamer Days but I haven't had the chance of picking it up yet, she is a fantastic adventure author or at least I think so, can't put her books down.

I also agree with You about Flutter Valley, if I like a bit of nature along with my peace and quiet I will go there, their a bit more peaceful then other breeds so it's nice once in a while" she said, sighing a little at the other as she mentioned being an adventurer. "You go on adventures? I have been on a couple but not anything more than what one can find around here" she said, her master had made her go train in the mountains once, that was fun but that also was as much adventuring as she had had besides the odd ones around here.

"I don't mind close spaces, myself," said Oriahull. "I have a really good sense of direction, so I know all the ways out. It's a bit like a sensory awareness type of talent.

"I've never heard of that author, does she live around here?"

Their drinks and food arrived, brought to them by Druid, since he seemed to have had a lull in customers. Oriahull said thank you and poured the extra hot water into her cups of hot chocolate and sipped them both.

"I go on lots of adventures," she explained. "My family is so big that I don't have any duties I need to take care of. I don't even have to find a mate and have kids, everyone else is doing it of their own accord, and I just go out. I do have an older sister, who went on a journey a few years ago and never came back, but she's a bit different. I like home. She didn't.

"Sometimes I go up to the Dragon Ruins, but it is very sad up there. You couldn't possibly even think of trying to rebuild the place. It's important to remember the faults of the past so you don't repeat them, and to appreciate what you have, I think. I'm grateful for my mountain."

"Something I am not great at, I don't know why that is but I was taught how to fight and how to use my fire talent for something more then just light shows and stories but as a weapon also but my sense of direction is terrible, if it is a fight that is fine but in every day life? I don't know, I just end up getting lost far more then what I would like to admit. My Master HATED me for it, every errand I ran for him meant him not getting it till the end of the day" she said as she smiled as she laughed softly, remembering her Master who had died and making a mental note to visit his grave later.

"I don't know, all that is known to us is that she is a unicorn, knows magic and works as a writer in her spare time from running a magic shop in a town somewhere but if that is true about the shop or not I don't know, I know she is a magic user and is a unicorn but the other could just be hear say."

The Dragon smiled at the Druid and thanked him but before he left she pulled a bit more money out of her bag which included a decent tip and smiled at him "can you please bring me a thickshake and a bottle of cola as well? Keep the change" she said as she took a sip of her Chai Latte and looked at the other, cleaning her top lip from the froth.

"I would love to go on adventures but, like you, I adore being at home, entertaining the kids with stories and light shows and seeing the smiles on their faces brings me so much enjoyment" she said smiling a little at the last show she put on for the children in the Valley and whilst it was just last week it seems like forever ago, she needed to do another story time soon. "Reading helps create my stories, I might not take the stories and act them out but it helps coming up with my own and that is more then I could ever want, I may want adventure and I may create stories to help me live through them but I couldn't leave home, not the kids who love my stories and adore my talent of acting them out in front of them, I would miss them far too much if I just up and left and they would miss me" she said, knowing that it sounded a little vain but it was true, the kids did love her story telling and light shows, she had worked so hard in perfecting that talent.

"Won't be ruins for long...or at least a little wont be. I have a friend who has just built a home on the outskirts of the ruins and intends on cleaning it up, if possible, even remaking some stuff and having it as somewhere people can rest if they go there and just learn by looking/touching what once was a thriving place to live for our kind. She would LOVE to remake it but even she knows that would take far too long but if they could remake some stuff and just clean up what is left and keep the place as a learning center for our race then that will make her happy, she is happy being there with her mate and possible kids and being the unofficial keepers of the ruins, it saddens her but at the same time if she can help bring awareness and knowledge, as much as she can, to those who don't know about what went on then that is all she cares about."

The Dragon ate some of her pasta and softly sighed, hoping Tranq would be alright up there alone, she wasn't sure how their race was almost wiped out but she did feel sad that she couldn't find out the full story as that would be an amazing story to write.

"Someone is rebuilding the dragon ruins?" Asked Oriahull incredulously. "I can't believe it. That is so strange to me. My mother used to live there. She says the dragons fell due to infighting and, I suppose, because our breeding rate is so low."

"You can use fire? That is very excellent; I hear it was a common power for dragons. My brother's mate's sister has a similar power, but she is only a dragon recessive. It is better than nothing. She uses her affinity for heat for baking."

She sipped her chocolate. "I can't really make up stories... That's interesting."
PostPosted: Wed May 18, 2016 5:57 am

"That is what I have heard also but I guess they want to see the full story if they can and help others realize what happened shouldn't happen again and all of that, I give my parents credit for trying, it would be a good historic site if they can do anything with it" she said as she took a sip of her hot drink and then nodded "yes, I can" she said as he made sure no one was around before blowing out a flame of fire from her mouth, manipulating the fire it as she went and turned it it into two humans who were holding hands with each other and letting them dance in the afternoon air before it vanished moments later. "My master taught me how to use my talent for more than just light shows and stories, he taught me how to use it as a weapon also "she said as she blew fire out of her mouth and created a fiery whip with it, manipulating it to make a loud crack in the air several times before vanishing.

"At least she has it, like you said, dragons don't seem to have this power much any more, rather sad really, we are dragons and we are meant to be fire breathers to some extent but alas, that seems to have fallen to the wayside after all these years, maybe one day it can be bred back into the race, we might have lost it but surely the future generations might be able to get it back into us" she said as she quickly finished her first plate of pasta and finished on the next just as the Druid came back and placed her other drink on the table to which she smiled at him and thanked him.

Sorry I have taken so long, I just have been resting, for a few weeks, I have the longest frigging viral cold thing in history, it has been coming in drips and drabs, it started out as one cold symptom (a sore throat) then that cleared and I got massive mucus build up then that has almost cleared (at least I can talk now unlike the night before last where you would think I had laryngitis) and then I got cough/sneezing and now that is there and there with a little left over mucus but I am not sneezing/coughing majorly...I swear, this is the strangest cold I have ever had, it just hasn't wanted to come all at once.

And to top it all off, whilst I am pretty much healed from my surgery I still shouldn't be going through a cold for another couple of weeks at least just to be on the safe side as they usually say 6-8 weeks so it isn't exactly good for my innards which are still, technically, on the mend, mostly mended sure, but still you don't want to risk something like a cold to possibly undo what little parts might be taking that extra little bit of time to heal properly so if I was going to get a cold the least it could do it have it all come at once and not just drag on for weeks.

And yes, been to the GP and she just said it is just a strange viral thing going around right now, instead of just a week long cold (in the common cold general sense) it is a two week plus thing which is a pain in the butt, the funny thing is, she said that I am the only one who she has heard of that has had it come in bits and pieces, apparently my body wants to just piss me off. -_-

"Low fertility rate and... other reasons..." Oriahull looked around quickly. "My brother's mate's grandmother was at the quest to get the last eggs out- including my father- and she said it was also due to... genocide." Oriahull pressed her lips together, unhappy to be communicating something so terrible. "Apparently the demon and vampire ponies were taking the dragons out as well..."

Oriahull, already on edge now, jumped, startled by the flame. "Interesting," she said, with more of a gasp of discomfort than amazement.

She opened her mouth and her tongue curled around words she decided she ought not to say. She could not breathe fire. Her power was very... plain. Like she was. Like her brothers and sister were. There were some amazing dragons. Like her nephew, Mehranthyr. He was amazing, his powers so great. But her brother, like Oriahull herself, had a passive power. She did not think anything bad in that. She smiled to herself, thinking that she would have hated it if she could only have been born with the power to breathe fire, if she had had no other power to possess. She enjoyed the opportunity to be different, even if that also could mean 'boring'.

----------

That sounds terrible and I hope you're feeling better soon ^^

I have no such excuse- I have just been... in an almost constant state of terror. As you do. If you're me.
