The worst part of the hospital wasn't the pain. That, Autumn could pretend wasn't so bad. It was the almost-silence. How she would be lulled into a contented state, only for the shrill BEEP of the machinery to jarr against her thoughts. She knew she needed to be here, but she was just... so, so tired. And so ******** ready to be home.
Sitting with her bed partially raised, Autumn thumbed idly through the magazine. The unfortunate part of being more cognisant was realizing how miserable she was in this hell-hole. She appreciated the doctors and nurses, she did! Thanks to them, she wasn't going to have any permanent damage or anything of the like. Modern Medicine was seriously incredible.
But jesus christ, she REALLY JUST WANTED SOME SLEEP. WITHOUT THAT DAMN MACHINE BEEPING.

Pax had been quite panicked to realize that Autumn had met THAT ONE. Not one of the friendlier spirits, but THAT ONE, the one who burned. In its frenzy, it had barely remembered that humans were unused to the appearances of those such as itself, and only remembered to take up its human... ish... form upon startling an elderly human. The place where it found Autumn was a large, white building, full of smells that hurt Pax's nose. Still it persisted, even as smaller humans spoke to it in loud tones that hurt its ears. That was how Pax came to Autumn's room trailing five security guards, three nurses, and a very confused psychotherapist. "Autumn," it said, its voice raised for perhaps the first time since their very first meeting. "What is. Happening! To you!" The machines were terrifying. It hurried over to her, all six of its eyes wide and hands fluttering nervously.

"Pax," Autumn croaked out, sitting up a little straighter and wincing at the pain. Their last meeting had been less than stellar. In her curiosity, Autumn had upset her friend, and had deeply regretted it. But then, things had gotten beyond her control. She had met up with Zac, and there had been the man in Other Ashdown...
"They're. They're helping me feel better," She explained, finding that she was smiling despite herself. A visit from Pax was exactly what she'd needed. It was a distraction from the memory of the smoke, and the man, and the ******** BEEPING SERIOUSLY SHE WAS GOING TO LOSE HER MIND.
"I was so worried," she wheezed, ignoring previous instruction not to speak. Autumn had this odd little feeling that Pax wasn't big on reading. Or had any reading ability at all.
"You were so upset. We never got to talk."

Pax's little train of followers dispersed upon seeing Autumn was familiar with her visitor. In another hospital, that wouldn't have flown, but Ashdown General was a tiny community deal. It didn't know to be grateful for this, and it sat on the bed beside Autumn without stopping to ask. "It is. Barbarism. Machines... Did you not. Wear your salve?" Its hands stilled when they found Autumn's, treading carefully around the strange device that snaked into her. "I am sorry," it said. "I did not mean. To be away. So long."

"I'm sorry babe. I got... distracted," She admitted, thinking back to her Mental Meltdown 2k16. Autumn had definitely been gung-ho about the salve. Really gung-ho. But Pax didn't need to know that she had essentially lost her s**t and tried to make enough potions and salves to protect the entirety of her social circle.
"You don't have to apologize," Autumn soothed, offering her non-tubed hand out to Pax with a gentle smile. "Did everything work out with Heliodora?"

Pax frowned, and enveloped Autumn's offered hand with both of its own. "Yes," it said. "She is well." But Autumn was not. It couldn't keep its hands still, pressing its dark fingers to every strange machine in sight. Its brow furrowed and its lips curved definitively downward. "I want to help," said Pax.

"I can't say no to you," Autumn laughed hoarsely, still smiling despite the exhaustion. She looked up to Pax's lowest set of eyes, making certain to show her friend that she was paying attention. As best she could, anyway.
"What do I need to do?"

"Be still," said Pax, and it closed its eyes for a long moment. A breeze rustled into the room, fresh and smelling of peppermint. It didn't cure all of Autumn's ills, whatever it was Pax had done, but it lessened them. "You are. Tired," it asked, tilting its head. The flowers draped upon its antlers hung between Autumn and Pax like a beaded curtain. "May I. Sit with you. For a time?"

Any difference was better than where she'd been. Autumn breathed in, slow and deep, and was pleased to discover it didn't necessarily hurt as badly. That was a great surprise. Sighing to herself, Autumm nodded to Pax.
"I'd like that. A lot."

It took some weird maneuvering, but Pax managed to twist around enough to press a gentle little peck of a kiss to Autumn's forehead. "Shall I. Tell you a story?" Stories were great healers, so it heard. Humans seemed to like them.

Well. She hadn't been expecting a kiss, but it wasn't entirely unwelcome. Autumn found herself nodding excitedly despite the nervous flush in her cheeks.
"I'd love a story. Something about you?" She asked, smiling brightly. "Or if not, just... something wonderful."

"I will try. To speak normally," it promised, which was none of the things Autumn had said. It hummed for a moment, some odd little atonal melody that was not particularly pretty nor particularly mysterious. It closed its eyes, all six of them, and began, "Once upon a time, long before there was you, there was a man. He was beloved and he was feared. He walked among the people. He was kind to us. But there was war inside him. Anger that festered and boiled. He bowed to no rules, though he knew them." Here it paused, taking deep breaths as if it had been tired out by the words it had gone through. "He was afraid, Autumn. He feared oblivion like you fear it. His will was stronger than all of ours. He wanted to control. To be safe. He hunted safety the way you do. He fought us all. We caged him, and hoped he would die." Pax lowered its eyes. "He will never die. Not until the cycle is broken. Not until. Our Heliodora is dead, too. The children. They must die for the cycle. To break." It fell silent. "But that is not. A good story. It is... the most important story. That I know." Pax sighed, the most human gesture it had made since it began to take this humanoid form. "I know a story. About a princess. And her family. Would that suit?"

Autumn listened to the story, closing her eyes. The man with a war inside... Pax must've been telling the story of the enemy. But no, she couldn't think of him that way. The gardener. She was going to think of him as the gardener. The gardener, afraid of death, who would not his flowers grow as they wanted. So he would trim them and keep them orderly for control.
"I am afraid. But... Flowers need to grow," Autumn said quietly, finding herself unable to smile. It just gave her all the more reason to fight, when she got out of here. If Heliodora was going to fall... Someone had to be ready.
Would Pax, too, fall?
"I'd love a story about a princess," Autumn nodded, still distracted by the gardener. Talk about depressing.

So Pax spun Autumn a wondrous story about a princess and her country bordered by lamps that glowed and never went out, and the cruel villain who tried to douse them. It proved to be a fairly able storyteller, if halting at times; and by the time it reached the climax of the story, the sun had begun to set. "I should go," said Pax sadly, having stopped on a cliffhanger that would've made Benihoff and Weiss envious. "I have been gone quite a long time."

"WHAT. But- but what happens?" Autumn sat up, voice unpleasantly hoarse in her sudden jarred state. She had been falling asleep to the story, entranced by the princess, and then... that. That horrible, horrible cliffhanger! On the one hand, she was STUPID upset and wanted to know... but it was just a story, after all. Nothing world-ending.
"I mean. If you have to go, I understand. But will you finish it for me sometime?"
