It was time.
Stepping behind a makeshift blast shield, a curly haired figure clutched a small remote nervously. Her goggles were covered in dust and it was hard for her to convince herself that this would work but she had to make progress soon. Her fight with Cerpin was fueling her to prove that if she had to do this alone then fine, she would do it alone and do it well.
So far her main restrictions were parts and location. She didn't have as easy of access to spare parts now that she'd been chased out of her junkyard. She longed to return but was too afraid. As for location, she would've preferred to test her project further away from civilization but she didn't really have a good place picked out. It was dangerous to test her rockets in the swamp for obvious reasons of fire hazards and wanting to keep the hidden base as secret as possible.
Also she found she couldn't quite fit some of her machines in Scuttle's shell which made it hard to move them.
"3, 2, 1..." Pushing those thoughts aside, Tevini resumed her purpose. Hitting the button, she braced herself for her rocket to shoot up into the sky, hopefully run out of fuel, and then land nearby without too much damage. She'd purposefully limited her materials used in order to test that she was applying the theories and mechanics in her book correctly rather than try to make something incredibly powerful.
Which is why against all of her calculations, the thing shot up four feet and exploded.
Flinching behind the protective screen, the redblood bit her lip to try and stop herself from being disheartened but it was hard. She and Scuttle scurried towards the smoking mess. She started to beat the small fire on the remaining parts out with her apron while Scuttle squinted at the shrapnel shot into the desert sand. She had to act quickly so no one would realize anything had happened here!

Buffel sat next to a building on the outskirts of town, looking up at the pink moon. The air was cool, and not so much relaxing but in such a way that it left him eager to move. He had no contracts tonight and it seemed like his time would be spent meandering about town, looking for some dust to be kicked up. The young guttersnipe was not normally one for days off, and now was no different. Whatever sat up in the sky, none of it seemed eager to rouse him from his boredom. Giving up on the vast expanse above him, he turned his gaze to the desert beyond the town’s end. Just as he was set to write off the land as similarly dull, something caught him. Turning quickly, he saw bright light emitted from a hill not too far from him. Buffel had heard the sound first, a quiet but distinct explosion. He checked around him. It appeared as if no one else in town had noticed, or at least gave a care about the fuss out yonder. Shrugging to himself, he trotted out across the sands to see what was up. Climbing a large hill, he happened upon the site: a young redblood and what appeared to be her lusus were haulin’ toward the charred remains of some contraption that had blown its top. He eased himself down the hill of sand, calling out to her. “Hey! Hey Miss, ‘scuse me! What was all that racket over here just a second ago!?”Doutei I return! Hopefully this is a fitting introduction!

Curls sprung at the sudden voice and the red blood froze. No one was supposed to see her!
Scared, Tevini began trying to formulate an escape plan but realized it was no use. They were out at the edge of town and running out into the desert would only succeed in separating her from finding a place to hide. She didn't know if the newcomer was here to arrest her or what but they were simply just going to have the advantage until she could find a way to change the situation. Keeping a firm grasp on her apron, Tevini attempted to sneak a screwdriver out of the pocket into one of her hands so she'd be armed. Then she turned around to see who'd approached her.
"Who're you?" The girl blinked as he appeared to be just a kid like her. She didn't remember seeing the boy patrol the city so at least he wasn't a known bounty hunter or something. It didn't mean she could trust him yet, after her experience with Adamaz, but she would hold off on making any decisions about what to do until she knew a little more information.
"I was just... trying to make a-" Quick think of something! "-a clock." She stuttered lamely.
For an inventor she sure wasn't good at inventing stories.

Buffel cocked his head to one side, confused. He surveyed the damage. Parts were strewn about the desert, the initial take-off point had been scorched heavily and her blast shield had a notable ding where a piece had flown straight for it. Resting his foot on what looked to be a gasket, he teetered it back and forth as he mulled over what he saw. Buffel turned to the largest of the machine’s remains, where she sat. The girl looked up, soot marks all upon her apron. He might not have the brightest spark in his thinkpan, but he knew enough to know that weren’t no clock. Wings like that, it had all the fixin’s of a rocket, but Buffel let it slide. Some people got their secrets ‘n’ all that. “The name’s Buffel. Buffel Obille. ‘S a mighty fine pleasure to meet ya miss!”His smile wide and genuine, but lacking in a tooth or two. He walked up to her at an even pace, before stopping with his hand outstretched to help her up. Doutei It's cool! Buffel can be a bit too trusting lol he'll learn!

"Nice to meet you, Buffel." Tevini replied hesitantly. Grateful he hadn't pushed her over the busted machine, she accepted his help up and wondered why he was being so friendly. It wasn't that she had a problem with it, she was simply aware she looked very suspicious right now. Perhaps it was his way of trying to catch her off-guard. She'd better be careful he didn't trip her up with his calm demeanor!
"Thank you. Sorry if my clock startled you earlier." The redblood apologized lamely. She'd have to keep up with the story even if it was really stupid. Bending down to pick up some of the pieces, it was clear she still intended to gather up what parts she could find. It would take her a little while but she needed to see if any of them were in decent enough condition to reuse them. Now that she had limited access to parts, she had to stretch every single piece as far as it could go. The broken parts might still be usable in other ways.
"... what were you doing out here, if you don't mind me asking?" The curly haired girl asked after an uncomfortably long silence. She wasn't sure if the explosion had been loud enough to hear from the buildings a few minutes away or if this troll had a hive out here. Was this one of his hang out spots? She needed to know if this was a problematic testing ground. She didn't want to garner attention from other trolls if she came back here to try again.

“Oh nothin’ special Miss, just meandering about. No contracts today so I figured I’d go lookin’ for some excitement around town. My feet led me to the edge o’ town right here, so I guess the excitement is you!” Dang, she was sure-as-shootin’ committed to that clock story. Buffel knew she wouldn't give up what it was she made, but it was worth a shot to try and wrestle what she was doing afore the explosion. He wiped his now soot-covered hand off on his sarape. The whole place was strewn with parts she'd probably want back, maybe on tonight's menu was assisting the lady with picking up the whole caboodle of scrap? Not the worst way to spend a night! “Not to pry Miss, but what exactly were ya doin’ makin’ a uh, clock all the way out here?” He looked back towards town. Not a soul in sight. Turning toward the redblood he continued his queries. “Seems altogether deserted out here, and from the looks of it all ya prepped for a mighty wide blast radius!” Doutei No worries! I'm gonna be pretty busy all through the weekend lol

"Contracts? What is it you do?" Tevini paused at the word. The other troll was dressed in a very particular fashion but she didn't want to make any assumptions about his occupation. Nor did she like the nervous feeling starting in her gut. If he was looking for fugitives she'd better figure it out quick!
"I like the quiet out here." The redblood replied to his question. It wasn't exactly a lie, just not the full truth. She was always looking for secluded places to test her inventions without being discovered or hurting any bystanders. And... with Cerpin blasting his music back at their hive all the time lately, the silence of the desert was a nice break. Uncertain eyes glanced Buffel up and down to size him up, wondering if he appreciated it too. He'd been talking about looking for excitement but what if he'd really grown tired of the city and come out here for a break as well?
"I- um..." His questions continued to prod, unfortunately, and it was clear the jig was up. Dammit. She'd better come clean before he started asking even worse ones.
"... it's not a clock. I was building a rocket." The girl admitted, avoiding his gaze. Picking up another piece of shrapnel, she tried not to let the defeat bother her.
"It didn't go well." Her voice wavered at this admission, clearly upset by the failed launch. Ugh she was totally unraveling in front of this stranger and didn't know what to do.
"I'm sorry I lied about it. I just... it's supposed to be a secret." Was he the type of troll to keep it? It was too late to keep lying either way.

”Awe come now, don’t worry about that none! Lady’s entitled to ‘er secrets, I ain’t sore about it.”Buffel began to pick up scraps with her. Grabbing the gasket he’d spotted careening off in the explosion, he confessed, ”I did have an inkling this was a bit too high-falutin’ to just measure time. It’s awful thoughtful of ya to pick such a lonesome spot to test it so nobody gets hurt!”He hoped she was feeling better after the failure to launch. The wreckage was still fairly warm in his hands. Looking at the rest of the scrap, Buffel cocked his head to the side. All of it seemed totally foreign to him and he had nary a clue what he should be picking up and what should just be left there. What kinda mess was this gal in? Testing rockets in the middle of the night was hardly a common pastime. Answers beget more questions, he supposed. ”As for my contracts…”Buffel reached to his hip, nabbing his trusty six-shooter from his side with his free hand and tossed it skyward, catching it just under the trigger with his finger and giving it a few good twirls before he holstered it once more. ”...I’m a gun for hire! I shoot what needs shootin’ and help who needs helpin’!”Doutei Tevini is super cute, here's open Buffel's gun theatrics arent too unintentionally threatening!

"A-ah! Thank you." Tevini flushed at the compliment. She hadn't been expecting him to notice her clumsy attempt at being considerate. Nor had she expected him to be so relaxed about her admission of lying to him. Sure he wasn't a highblood so he was less likely to be offended by it but she appreciated his calm form of kindness.
"You shoot?!" The redblood's eyes widened as Buffel exposed his gun and tossed it in the air. Instinctively she stepped backwards, scared it might misfire. He seemed confident in his ability to control and catch it but she was just an easily nervous troll. While the antics spooked her, her exposure to Cerpin's flair for the dramatic (and ridiculously dangerous) had started to desensitize her a little to these kinds of things. A small part of her was impressed.
"What 'needs shooting?'" The mechanic asked hesitantly. She already knew a troll who needed helping!

Buffel hadn't noticed the mild look of worry in the girl's face. His eyes lit with a fire like the flames of the suns themselves. This was Buffel's home turf in conversation and he was happy to oblige the woman in her question. Closing the gap between them quickly, Buffel smirked. ”Why bad guys o’ course! Miscreants, varmints, criminals, crooks!”With each term Buffel posed dramatically, his left hand positioned in a finger-gun fashion as his off-hand held the bottom, pretending to brace it. Satisfied with his performance, he held the fingergun to his mouth, blowing the imaginary smoke away. Tipping his imaginary hat with the tip of the imaginary gun, he holstered the hypothetical weapon. ”Usually I just fire a warning shot and that's all it takes! It ain't too hard and I figure ya gotta help the helpless, right the wrongs!”Buffel watched as her eye as he said these things. Reading her expression, he let his smile fade for a moment to give a slight air of professionalism as he went into work mode. ”Might ya have anyone in mind that fits that description, ma’am?”Doutei No worries, tag me back whenever you can! The week's been pretty hectic for me as well!

'I can think of one...' Kursha's face flashed in her mind. She wasn't about to send this kid off to face that madman, however. The greenblood had survived the entire Rebel army throwing themselves at him, she doubted this one boy would be able to do anything to him. It'd probably just get him killed.
"I don't have many enemies of that kind." Tevini shook her head. She was a fugitive, sure, but hadn't personally offended any specific trolls. There was Chiara who scared her, but the blueblood wasn't acting as a problem for her. Really the only troll who was causing her frustration was her own partner and she knew better than to send a gunshot at him. They were already fighting with words, bringing weapons into this would end any chance for a reconciliation.
"Do you ever hunt animals?" The redhead considered. Ever since she'd moved to the outskirts of Chittentown from her junkyard, they'd been low on food. Cerpin's beetle farm was still recovering from the move and they'd had to leave many behind. All this added up to not having a lot of ways to get food. If Buffel had decent prizes, maybe she could pay him to hunt for her. She wasn't picky about taste or quality, just as long as it was edible.
"I'd be interested in arranging something if that's a service you offer."
tenaciousgadabout Late again but here's a post! : ) Just to clarify, Tevini is not referring to the troll hunts but rather like shooting a bird or a buffalo or something.

She had muttered it, but he heard her mention that she knew someone who might fit that description. She didn't tread on the topic for long, but he hoped that she weren't mixed up in anything too dismal. Before he could give it much worry however, Tevini changed the subject. Buffet's eyes lit up at the mention of hunting, ” 'Course I can! What kind o’ self respectin’ sharpshooter ya take me for?”He began to tap his holster confidently but stopped as he looked out towards the desert, remembering the local fauna. ”Not much in the way of options if we’re talkin’ desert huntin’ though. Might have a bit more luck in the swamp, if ya like the taste of scalebeast. If it's a hunting contract I'd be happy to oblige you, Miss.”

"A s-swamp?" Tevini swallowed nervously. Was he thinking of going near the one she was thinking of? That could end badly! Worried, the girl fumbled with how to respond without seeming suspicious.
"Of course! Um..." The redblood nodded at his mention of a contract. She wasn't sure how these things normally worked but really did want to find a better food supply. Buffel seemed more than willing and she wasn't going to back out now. She just needed to think. How could she make sure he didn't veer into rebel territory? It didn't make sense for her to ban him from going into certain areas, nor did she want to restrict what he brought her because she honestly didn't care. That left...
"I'd actually... love to see you in action. Could I come with you?" She would regret this later, she was sure. Her weapon of choice was currently a gun, sure, but it was a nail gun and nowhere near as explosive as what Buffel was hauling around. Tevini didn't do great with loud sounds. Or violence. Or rejection. Tevini didn't do great with many things.
"I could meet you at the edge of the swamp. And I promise I won't get in the way!"
tenaciousgadabout Haha! Finally a quick tag for ya! And don't worry, Tevini will bring Cerpin but she won't have the foresight to mention him here.

”Well o’ course! I’d be happy to take ya out hunting with me!”The boy was excited to be able to show off his skills to another person. He wondered if the girl had been on many a hunting trip afore. She certainly seemed to have a scrappy sense of survival skills about her. Plus she made that rocket, so he figured she had to have quite the brain on her. He gave the lowblood a once-over to assess how ready she would be to take on some of the more athletic portions of the process. She could probably handle hogtyin’ if her aim is good, and given her handiness she might have enough coordination for some gun lessons he supposed. Maybe he could train her in some of his hunting methods regularly? The idea of havin’ a sidekick in his tracking and hunting appealed to Buffel, and as he thought it a wide grin of confidence appeared across his face. Once again his gun was unholstered and he flipped it all about himself. Whilst twirlin’ his six shooter all about and catching in in flashy poses, he bragged to her. ”It can be a teachin’ experiment for ya! Don’t know how experienced ya are with guns, but I’m sure I could teach you a thing or two no matter what you’ve d-!”Moving his eyes to her face, he coulda sworn saw a slight worry amidst her insistence. He stopped in his tracks and looked at the gun he was holding, currently pointed directly at her in another flashy pose. Embarrassed by such foolhardy display, he quickly shoved the gun back into it’s holster and stepped closer to her. Slowly and carefully, he put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. ”Right outside the swamp, sounds like a plan. If you ever need help with anything else too, just give a holler, ya hear?”Doutei Aaaand tagged back! Excited to see where these two will go with this!
