He was kind enough to walk her home, despite their shallow relationship. Lacie, since the death of a particular lieutenant, had fallen into the habit of recruiting night partners to ease her sleep.. amongst other things. Of course, she had been very clear in her desires, and they in their desires. Whenever it was convenient for both of them, they met up. The distasteful term, for lack of a better word, sex friend was applicable. She came to a pause in front of the local library. Even though it was late, a few lights were dimly lit. By routine, or to signify the presence of somebody still there? Whatever the reason, it probably didn't matter. It felt like years since she had stepped inside, a lingering remnant of her childhood. Even though she had just passed the entrance into adulthood, her childhood seemed to be so distant.. then again, joining the Negaverse was enough to age one beyond their years. With a rueful smile, she wondered about the direction of her life.

Her companion bumped into her slight form which had abruptly stopped. "Isn't your home still farther?" He asked with a questioning smile.

"Why don't you leave me here?" Wrapping his jacket around her more tightly to ward off the cold, a surprising chill in the spring weather, she offered him a smile. ".. If you say so." He looked around dubiously, but knowing the stubborn nature of the women in front of him, it was futile to attempt to argue. He left with a wave and a kiss on the forehead to signify a farewell. To any passerby, which was unusual in this location at this time of the night -- even at first glance, the pair was extremely incongruous. An air of intimacy and warm affection surrounded them, but it was easy to tell neither of them were attached or devoted.

Once he left, Lacie was left to comfortably reminsce. Speaking out loud to herself, she mused, "So many memories here! It almost feels like I could walk right in, and it would be the same." With Anthony, the local librarian looking over her shoulder to see what she was reading.. but surely, it had been a few years. It was doubtful if he was even still there.

Tony was busy at work inside, getting some work he had been putting off for far too long done. Usually, he was getting ready for patrol by now, but some things just could not wait any longer. He needed to get these books back into circulation, out of the sorting room and onto the shelves where they belonged. That meant scanning them so the system knew they were no longer beyond reach, but actually back where they were supposed to go.

And then, of course, putting them there.

Hadaya was out and about already, and had not stopped by the library too long today. Just enough, oddly, to make off with half of Tony's sandwich. Tony was a sucker for that cat's little guilty face, though, so he couldn't help himself. Dogby, on the other hand, was still with her owner, working late. As far as a corgi was able to, anyway.

She walked around at his feet, following him dutifully back and forth, and looking up at him whenever he stopped. It slowed him down, but every now and then he could not help but lean down and scratch her ears.

He was just walking by the front door, made of glass and lit from both the glow of the indoor work lights and the outside lamps, when he noticed someone peaking in. He paused, glancing over and offering a cordial wave before it turned into a more familiar and excited one. He dropped the books he was carrying and hurried to get his keys from his pocket, moving to open the doors.

"I thought that was you!" he said, grinning ear to ear. A familiar face was a common occurrence around here, but not one he was ever sorry for. He loved being able to catch up with patrons and guests of the library, especially when they were friends.

She toyed with the idea of leaving.. after all, it seemed unreasonable to hang about a closed library merely because of some nostalgic feelings. But as a vaguely familiar sihouette waved, she paused in her tracks. That in itself gave them enough time to recognize each other. Once the doors had opened, she threw himself into his arms, not hesitating to hug him with the intimacy resembling old friends. "Tony!" She greeted in a happy voice.

"It's been a long time, hasn't it?" Her face bloomed in genuine emotion, remembering the librarian. Since she was a child, she often visited the library. It had been like a second home to her, with the smell of worn out books, the feeling of faded paper beneath her fingers, and the low baritone of the librarian who never failed to help her. No matter what childish problem she had presented him with, he had always known the right answer. As she had grown older though, she had slowly realized that even the safety and the comforts of the library could not shield her from the harshness of reality.

"You're the same as always, huh?" Disengaging herself from his arms, she didn't hesitate to pick up the books that had fallen when he had become aware of her presence. Her thumb gently caressed a corner of a classical novel.. vaguely wishing that she could return to the time when everything was more simple- when she could become enamored of a novel, and truly believe in its happy ending. But endings were never black and white, only shades of gray.

"How are you doing? You look wonderful." Especially for a man his age, she could have easily believed he was ten years younger. "Are you married, or with kids?" There was so much that she wanted to ask him.

"Too long!"

He chuckled brightly and hugged her in greeting, feeling a sharp stab of guilt. He fell out of the loop with so many people, but of course that was simply the natural way of things. Kids grew up, as was clearly the case, and it was always a shock to his system to see the way they changed.

Welcoming her into the library, he motioned for her to follow him to the front counter. There, he put the books down so he could address her directly, and not be in danger of embarrassing himself more by dropping them again. He was very clumsy, especially when he was distracted or excited.

"Ha, I don't believe you when you say that, but thanks for the effort! I'm doing pretty good, though! Tired a lot of the time, working, but happy. I do have a wife, yes, and we have a little girl that's the absolute light of my life. Ah. What about you? How are you doing? You've grown up so much! I can almost not believe it!"

Boy, he was old. He felt it more and more, these days. He certainly wasn't getting any younger, any way.
