The evening so far had been a quiet one, with not even a youma to break up the monotony of the patrol.
Not that Athene particularly minded because in Destiny City you kind of had to take the quiet moments when you could.
It had been a while since he had been out this particular way - on this particular side of town - although Athene had chosen it deliberately.
Because last time he had been out on patrol there had been posters of his friend and ex flatmate and Athene really, really didn't want to run into any more flyers of Ida...
So far he had been successful with no childishly drawn flyers to stir up things that he didn't want to think on and whilst a part of him felt a little guilty for slipping out without telling Liryn where he was going, he didn't feel up for the small mauvian's increasingly pointed suggestions that he needed to seek out Elvira.. That he owed her an apology.
He took a sip from the contents of take out cup cradled in his hands, the hot chocolate still warm-ish - if you could call it that - although he wasn't really fussed as he continued to slowly walk the patrol beat that he had set for himself.
Well at least right up until the point where he picked up on his first aura of the evening.
It felt like a knight's aura, but one that was stronger than a Page's aura so perhaps a Squire...
And it felt close - well at least relatively so.

He had never patrolled on his own before.
The very thought of it was terrifying, in all honesty. Every time that he had powered up before, he'd had someone with him, either Eurydike or Celsus, and he'd needed that. Their support was what had bolstered him, what he kept him afloat, what had kept him from feeling utterly and completely like a fish out of water.
But now Emrys was on his own.
Fritz had had a function, and Hitch had had work, and he knew it was bad to simply stay at home and never power up without either of them. They were not a security blanket he could continue to cling to, after all - but still, it was nice to know that he was not alone.
And he wasn't, technically. Except that he was.
Emrys padded now down a street, clutching his staff tight enough that his fingers were a little numb from the grip on it. It was a far better cry than the stick he'd been told he'd had while as Cerussite; Emrys could not recall it, but Eurydike had described it akin to a magic wand except without the magic - which was, for all intents and purposes, useless. The staff at least was longer and held magic within it, something that Emrys had discovered with Celsus.
He felt now that it was at least better than nothing, if he could not have his two pillars of support continually with him. He had to learn to walk on is own sometime, after all; even toddlers could do something as simple as that, which made him feel more than a little pathetic.
A soft, stronger power signature reached him, and Emrys slowed his steps, his heart hammering in his chest - but he could tell, almost immediately, that it was not Chaos. A breath eased out of him, relief in his chest, but his steps were still cautious as Emrys rounded the corner. A figure stood ahead, long haired and slight, a cup held in slender hands.
"Er," said Emrys tentatively, fighting every internal resistance and desire to simply turn and run. "H - hello."
As it turned out the other aura was closer than Athene had realised as a voice spoke up from somewhere behind him.
The take out cup of what had once been 'hot' chocolate was still cradled in his hands as he turned and spotted a red haired man standing a little ways down from his position.
The colours of his uniform were familiar and for a moment Athene found himself thinking on the teal-haired Neptune knight that had once been a team mate.
This Neptune knight was unfamiliar though and whilst the uniform colours had made him think for a moment on Nysa, it had only been for a brief moment - because the other didn't look anything like the elegant teal haired Knight.
"Good evening," whilst Athene hadn't particularly been looking for company his quiet voice was not unfriendly as he returned the Squire's greeting. "Are you out on patrol?"

Not for the first time, he wished he had Hitch or Fritz's skills of being able just to communicate. Both had ways - albeit, vastly different ways - of talking to people, and both seemed to be able to charm their way through conversations without stumbling awkwardly over them.
Emrys did not have that skill, nor any others that involved talking. He could not actually think of any skills he did possess, but at the very least he was trying to overcome his intense desire to turn tail and run at the first sign of contact with another person.
It was very slow going.
His heart was threatening to hammer out of his chest, but Emrys inched a little closer, still clutching his staff to him. The young man's dark hair was twisted into a long braid and looped around with strands of what appeared to be beads, his uniform white and pristine in the dark of the night.
"Y - yes," said Emrys, and attempted a smile, though it was tentative and shy. "I'm - I'm Emrys." A pause, while he tried to keep his nerve. "Of Neptune. M - may I ask your name?"
"It's nice to meet you Emrys" Athene said with a small but friendly smile, the smile as quiet as his voice.
His voice turned rueful as he admitted "Normally I'd offer to shake hands, but in this time it would mean juggling the cup" before he continued "And I'm Sailor Athene, senshi of beads - although please feel free to just use Athene."
He didn't mention a rank, because Athene had never been particularly fussed about rank although the white wings and the strength of his aura were most likely clue enough given that an eternal aura wasn't exactly something that could be called subtle.

He felt a tiny sense of relief that he wasn't being immediately rejected. In spite of his newness to the White Moon, the anxiety that lingered from his civilian life and his missing memories was not easy to abate. Emrys gave a quick shake of his head.
"N - no, it's all right," he said hastily. "I don't - I understand. Athene is - is a nice name. I've only ever met one senshi before, and he's - he's my fiance, so it's, erm, rather...rather nice to meet another one."
Emrys' face had flushed a little at the mention of Eurydike, but he held his staff a little tighter and offered Athene a small smile, eyes drifting briefly to the wings. Eurydike didn't have those, but he had told him of the ranks, and what it meant to be Eternal.
"If - " Emrys' voice wavered a little hesitantly, and the flush deepened, Emrys cursing his inability not to sound moronic. "If you don't mind, could I perhaps...ask you a little about...about the White Moon? I'm still...getting used to things."
"Thank you" Athene said quietly with another of his small smiles, "Emrys is a nice name too."
He drank some more of his hot chocolate, although the term 'hot' chocolate was even more misleading now than it had been earlier given that the contents of his take out cup no longer held even the illusion of warmth.
"And sure I'm happy to answer any questions you have" he thought about for a moment before adding "Well at least I can try to because I can't promise that I'll know the answer - especially if you want to know about Knight stuff - although I'll answer to the best of my ability."
Because Athene would be the first to admit that he didn't know a lot about Knights.
And whilst Athene was a little curious about the way that Emrys had phrased his question and specifically the other's 'getting used to' comment, he also wasn't one to push - well at least not generally he wasn't.
"Did you want to talk here or whilst walking?"

He flushed with pleasure at the compliment, unused to any of them from people that were not Hitch or Fritz. Emrys shuffled his feet a little, trying not to look too pleased at such a silly thing. He gave a nod of understanding, a cool breeze ruffling through the air.
"I would be happy to," he said, with another nod, then stopped himself before he came out of this looking too much like a desktop bobblehead. Emrys lowered his staff a little, trying to ease some of the tension from his shoulders, and came a bit closer.
"So the..." He started tentatively, with a sideways glance at Athene. "...the senshi. They're all White Moon?"
"No not all of us," Athene admitted quietly. "Senshi like me are, although not all of us like the term 'White Moon'" Athene drank a bit more of the remnants of his once hot chocolate. "I personally don't mind" a quiet shrug "And the Negaverse and the Dark Mirror Court kind of tends to use the term interchangeably with Order."
He drank the last of the chocolate "The Negaverse and Dark Mirror Court have senshi too, although they tend to be in predominantly in black."
There wasn't a bin nearby and so Athene held onto the empty cup as he continued "Their eternals have butt wings too" his lips quirked up in a small but rueful smile "It's seems to be a quirk for senshi who reach eternal" the smile faded "Although eternal senshi from the Dark Mirror Court have black wings and eternal senshi from the Negaverse have black bat wings."

He tilted his head a little, brows drawing together in some confusion.
"What other name is there to call this side, then?" Emrys asked, and his grip on the staff had loosened significantly now, the stiffness in his shoulders easing. "Is 'White Moon' wrong then? Are...are 'Order' and 'White Moon' the same, or are they two separate things?"
He was talking a lot, the questions spilling out of him, and Emrys bit his lip, a flush of embarrassment on his cheeks. But Athene knew a great deal, and while Emrys had spoken with Eurydike about the senshi, he hadn't known that there were different kinds of them.
His lips twitched a little, a slight smile appearing. "My fiance doesn't yet have the wings, but he says soon," said Emrys, shifting his feet. "What are the Dark Mirror Court? Are they...not on our side?"
Athene considered the question thoughtfully "Personally I don't consider either White Moon or Order wrong" he admitted. "As I've always considered them the same."
He shrugged slightly as he added "And as I mentioned the Negaverse and the Dark Mirror Court kind of tends to use both terms interchangeably anyway."
His lips quirked up in a small but rueful smile as he continued "Although that's just my opinion - I can't really speak for anyone else in this."
He probably would have been somewhat bemused if he'd known that the taller man considered him as 'knowing a great deal', because Athene knew that there were others that had been around for longer than he had and who probably knew more than he did.
He had never had problems trying to answer questions to the best of his ability though.
His brief smile faded at mention of the Dark Mirror Court, his eyes absently going to the cup cupped in his hands as he said quietly "The Dark Mirror Court is.." he thought about it for a moment "Is kind of complicated."
He looked up at Emrys "Technically we're on opposite sides and like the Negaverse they steal energy. Then there's also the fact that they have some sort of alliance with the Negaverse and have helped them out in the past."
His hands tightened on the empty cup for a moment as he remembered the ambush of the joint senshi and knight meeting that Polaris had organised back when he had still been part of the Celestial Shepherds and then he realised what he was doing and deliberately forced his grip to loosen as he continued "But I'm not really sure what's up with their alliance with the Negaverse since the Negaverse turned on them about two years ago and since then there's been times when the Dark Mirror Court have helped us out."
He gave a sigh, his quiet voice serious as he admitted "Personally I don't see the Court as all bad, because there are some who I've talked to who I think are okay and who if things were different..." for a moment Athene's quiet voice was wistful.
For a moment. And then he shrugged as he added "However I am also aware that my opinion on them is probably not a popular one."

White Moon and Order, Emrys thought, shifting the words back and forth in his mind, the way that someone might weigh different fruits to judge their ripeness. He wasn't sure which one was considered, for lack of a better term, "politically correct," so to speak; but Celsus had always used "White Moon" when he had been teaching him.
Emrys listened quietly to the explanation of the Dark Mirrors, though his gaze caught the momentary tightening of Athene's fingers around his cup, and wondered whether something had happened between them. He swallowed hard, forcing his eyes back up.
After a hesitant silence, in which Emrys tried to process everything, he said, a little tentatively, "So the Court...I assume that opinions of them vary from member of - of Order to member of Order? You said yours is not a popular opinion, but you seem quite levelheaded and reasonable..."
Emrys trailed off, flushing with embarrassment, and hastily added, "It's nice to know that there are other allies, though."
Athene nodded "Pretty much" he admitted, because truthfully a lot of things varied from Order member to Order member - one only had to look at one of their meetings to see that.
He shook his head wryly at thought because on second thoughts perhaps not - because Order meetings from his experience tended to be messy.
The wryness of his thoughts was reflected in his sigh as he looked at Emrys "Thank you" he said quietly "Although there are some who would disagree and see me as weak..."
He sighed again "And perhaps they're right - because I'm the first to admit that I'm an ill fit for a soldier" because whilst he would and did fight when he had to, it wasn't something that he particularly liked doing.
He shrugged "But the same can be said of a lot of us I think - personally I think it's better to try and find a path to walk - something important to fight for" his lips quirked in a brief but rueful smile as he admitted "But I have never really had any grand fancy goals."
He shook his head slightly "But I'm rambling and so am sorry." Another small smile "And you're right - other allies are always nice."

"I'm not...really a soldier either," Emrys mumbled, feeling his face heat with embarrassment. He felt suddenly exposed, his chest tightening as he glanced at Athene, at the long hair, at the white wings that explained his higher rank. The young man clearly had been in White Moon for a long time, which was why Emrys had felt the need to speak with him.
"I don't mind the rambling," he said quickly, with a shake of his head that caused red hair to flap against his flushed cheeks. "Really. It's very helpful to me. I don't...have any grand fancy goals myself, except to, er...m-marry my fiance, so..."
His face was now so red it was a miracle he hadn't spontaneously combusted. Emrys pressed his lips together, and then said quietly, hesitantly, "I was...I was Negaverse. B-before this, I mean," he added, gesturing at his Squire's uniform. "I...I don't remember much about it, but I was told that...that I was named Cerussite and that I did...all sorts of things."
Athene laughed, "That's a pretty good goal I think" he said as the laughter faded back into one of his small smiles. "By the way I'm not sure if I said so earlier - but congratulations."
The smile faded as Emrys mentioned that he had once been part of the Negaverse, Athene listening in silence to the taller Squire's explanation.
"If you're looking for someone to judge you then you've picked the wrong person" he said quietly. "I don't have the right to" he ducked his head awkwardly before explaining "I've done things that I've not been proud of and have had to face the consequences of my own weakness" for a moment he looked down at the coffee cup as he thought of the senshi who had helped save him from Painite before admitting "And my weakness had horrible consequences."
He looked up at Emrys as he reached out awkwardly with a hand before letting it fall because it was Ida who was the one who had been better at offering reassurance not him "I don't know what had you deciding to join the Negaverse or what made you decide to subsequently get out - but I do know that there's a price for it and that price is in memories."
He paused briefly before continuing "One of my old flatmates used to be a corrupted senshi of the Negaverse before he made the decision to purify."
Vespa was gone now, having made the decision to try and live a life away from the city with his girlfriend - to live a normal life and whilst Athene missed him, he also couldn't fault the other for his decision - because the war took a toll.
He looked back up at Emrys "I think that anyone who makes that choice is brave personally" his quiet voice was serious, genuine "And I admit freely that if I was in that position then I'm not sure if I could pay that price."

Emrys is sweet and Athene is sorry that he is not like Ida and thus is crap at coming up with words to offer reassurance
