Moon Hunter PRINCESS ISLAND General Information Maintaining a superior defense is the pride of the Moon Division, defending even at the expense of attacking. However, this can be hard, especially for trainees who just got new magic weapons full of glowing and powers. Thus the Princess Island. At the center of the island sits a princess who will do absolutely nothing to protect herself, and it's up to you to build defenses that will withstand shadowling attacks so she she doesn't die in a horribly realistic manner.
There's four main paths for shadowling's to travel through, and you have 3 types of building materials to create your defenses from: straw bales, wood, and bricks. The sturdier the material, the sturdier the barrier, but the fewer you can build in the allotted time. After a set amount of time, the princess will crush a pumpkin pill, attracting varying amounts of lurking shadowlings. You get to watch helplessly from the observation station, without getting to attack yourself.
These creature are extremely weak and ill formed, coming up against a solid defense they will disperse, but in turn they also weaken said defense. When a defense goes down, they go right to the princess and attack her. Should she survive the wave, you get to go back down, rebuild, and do it again.
If you fail: the princess has died, horribly, and you've wasted a lot of time on this only to look fairly incapable. All things considered? Most pleasant course to fail.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights go to those with the healthiest princess and lasted through the most attack waves. If you choose to go beyond 5 rounds, switch the enemy dice roll to 4 d20s.
Mechanics Your princess has 20 hp First, roll the strength of you defense, using the dice for whichever building type you choose.
Brick: 4 d12 Wood: 8 d6 Hay bales: 12 d4
The order of the die determine the HP for each barrier location. For example, with bricks, rolling 5/6/8/1, would mean that path 1 has 5 HP, path 2 has 6 HP and so on. With a wood roll of 3/3/3/1/2/5/5/2, the first 2 dice would equal the amount of the first path. Brick would be the least math-y of the building materials (you lazy asses.) Roll 4 d12 for the attacking forces. Once again the order of the dice correspond with the path being affected. Then do the math to determine the status of your defenses and princess. Example: My defenses are 5/6/8/10 The attackers are 3/7/3/8
The result defenses are 2/-1/5/2 Negative numbers are taken off the princesses HP, leaving her at 19 HP. Go back and rebuild your defenses in the same manner as before, you'll be building on top of old defenses so you add the new defense HP to the remaining defense HP. Negative numbers = 0 HP for the defense, not negative HP. Minimum rounds to complete the course is 3
Bonus Mechanics Their defense expertise allows them to build slightly sturdier barriers. This applies to all paths that start at 0 hp. They do not stack. So if you are re-building on a barrier that lasted from an existing round, this bonus does not apply, as it is already still in effect.
Trainees: 0 hp bonus Moon Trainees: +1 hp bonus to each path Hunters: +1 hp to each path Moon Hunters: + 2 hp to each path

Lawrence wasn't feeling sturdy enough to do any of the other missions but in an effort to draw attention away from his avoiding duties he had opted to pick up the difference in training courses he had avoided doing for a very long time. Most of them were too dangerous for his present state and he wanted to avoid being put into golems for the time being lest he end up feeling dissociated or displaced by the experience. The simplest option which presented itself was princess island, which he had heard about in passing but never thought he would stoop to taking part in.
Yet here he was, inspecting the different paths and trying to decide which was the best to fortify in order to rescue his princess golem from destruction. He opted for bricks because they seemed the most reasonable choice and the one which would save him from getting scratched up by hay or splinters from wood.
Setting up his defences was obviously the priority and he set about doing his best to lay a sturdy foundation for the assault to come. It was tiring work and Butch had him drink plenty of water, even if he still adamantly refused to eat a sensible amount of food. This accomplished he headed back to the observation station and stopped to get a look at his assigned golem.
He stopped when he noticed the shock of perfect blonde hair and stared. It was Melvin. Melvin in a perfectly frilly dress with elbow length gloves and makeup. He wasn't sure how he was supposed to react when it blew him a kiss and instead resorted to waving awkwardly, resisting the desire to run away in the way he'd been doing lately from the real Melvin.
Golems were practically people. Was it even right to create these things just to kill them? Why was this acceptable and yet murder in the conventional sense was not?
He didn't understand and didn't try to understand, simply climbing up into the observation post to see how things proceeded.

The first wave was unleashed on his walls and he could only watch as the attackers dashed themselves against his carefully organised bricks, uncovering each and every weakness of the construction as they did so, trying to reach the pumpkin pill and the Melvin princess which had chosen this dangerous time to reapply some of her lipstick. It was very distressing to watch.
When it was over the first wall had endured well but the others less so, the second path down to a small and stunted remnant of the wall which had been there and others reduced to a mere smattering of low bricks.
He climbed down when the way was clear to get to repairing the damage done.

After getting a look at the damage done to his defenses he had a much better idea of where the fortifications needed to be laid and patiently laying out bricks he prepared the way for another onslaught, as he worked enjoying the warmth of the sun like a cat or a reptile and trying not to look too hard at the golem he'd found himself with.
It was fairly soothing as far as busy work went, keeping his hands busy with repetition and keeping his mind off of anything else, focused peacefully instead on the maximising his positioning and height of walls with the time that he had available.

The next wave was more brutal than he expected, running foul of his efficient blockade on the first path but managing to completely decimate his efforts on the second one, the other two paths held up but only just, clinging on with a brick and a prayer.
He was not feeling too confident about the fourth path either, feeling that the damage was spread urgently thin and the time between waves would only be enough to slap a bandaid on the carnage.

He did what he could to mitigate the damage in the time he had, putting a few bricks on the first wall to avoid being decimated by hubris before hurrying to rebuild at least something in the other three paths.
It was difficult to focus with the Melvin golem offering him tips the entire time, complimenting and flirting. It was horrible for him to endure, hearing it in that familiar voice and knowing that very possibly whatever was in that golem's mind was sentient but trapped for however long it took.
He kept thinking about how it felt to be Chantelle in the golem, trapped behind his own eyes and yet locked into a mechanical repetition of the role he was cast. The idea that that was what the princess golems were in some strange way was something that made him want to break its neck himself to stop its suffering.

And suffer it did, his distracted building providing only weak protection for the final and most ruthless wave of creatures yet, chewing their way through the second and fourth path and surging towards the vulnerable princess which fought fiercely against them with bright manicured nails.
Watching it unfold was simply a blank canvas to Lawrence, simply a display of things happening, detached and distant but somewhere he was aware that other people and other personas would be distressed by it all.
Chantelle would hate it, though perhaps even more now given what she was, Jan would find it distasteful. The oldest one, the forgotten one would be outraged about it all.
He shouldn't even be thinking about what forgotten personas would think.
He shoved it aside and went out to check if the princess was still alive. He was after a fashion and though it meant success, Lawrence felt maybe it would have been better if he wasn't. He did nothing more, just turned and left.
