Chailee sat upon a bed in the hospital. She was exhausted beyond belief and very much just yearned to lay back on the inviting pillows behind her and pass out. Unfortunately she wasn’t going to be getting any sleep. Not yet anyway. She had just gotten to the hospital and like many others who had arrived was quickly spirited off to be evaluated. Chailee was not visibly in any bad form and, because of such, was told to hold tight as the hospital buzzed like an angry bee hive as others turned up with injuries more severe than hers. So, there she sat on the gurney bed, listening to the sounds of people moving around in the hallway, barely keeping herself awake.
Soft green eyes glanced around the room. The stark, sterile whiteness of it was anything but comforting. In fact, she was pretty sure she’d be more comfortable sleeping outside in the park or something than sitting in the hospital like she was right now. Still, there she was, in the hectic hospital waiting for a doctor to come in to look her over and probably call her parents before the night was through. That was something she was not looking forward to. How was she suppose to explain to her parents that she was in the hospital. Again? That was just not something she was willing to think about right about then.
Just as her mind was beginning to wander, and she was pretty sure she was going to fall asleep sitting up an older nurse walked into the room with a clipboard in her hands. “Hi, honey. I am MaryEllen. I am just going to get some information from you and run some quick tests.” The woman smiled and her older, motherly appearance with greying blonde hair, and more pudgier frame just eased Chailee almost instantly. “Now, we got your name and basic information already. So, I need to know if you have any allergies or medications that you’re taking?”
“No.” Chailee responded quietly as she watched the woman jot some stuff down on the papers on her clipboard.
“Alrighty. So you’re 15?” MaryEllen questioned, glancing at the teen.
“Yea. I’ll be 16 in June.”
MaryEllen smiled. “Well happy early birthday.” She scribbled some more notes down before pulling a blood pressure cuff off of the wall where it was stored. “Now I am just going to get your blood pressure here. Hold out your arm.”
Chailee held out her arm as requested. Little cuts and scrapes could be seen on her arms thanks to her short sleeved T-shirt but nothing major. The woman carefully maneuvered the cuff onto her arm and tightened it. She pulled her stethoscope out placed it under the cuff before pumping it up. Chailee watched tiredly and vaguely noted the pressure of the cuff tightening. Quickly enough the pressure began to ease as MaryEllen began loosening the pressure before eventually pulling the cuff off. “Normal blood pressure. Very good.”
Chailee yawned and nodded, barely covering her mouth before the woman continued on with her tests to the super tired teen. By the time the whole thing was done Chailee felt dead to the world and the nurse finished off writing down information on a clipboard.
She then proceeded to check Chailee’s bangs, cuts and bruises. For the most part everything was just dabbed with some antiseptic. Nothing needed anything more than that. The woman did stop to inspect her neck and wrinkled her brows. “I don’t know what you got yourself into dear, but if you need help or need to get out of a bad situation I can give you a hotline number to call. You should know that it’s not good to stay in bad situations.” Mary Ellen pulled her hand away from Chailee’s neck to give the girl a soft look
“Alright hun. We’ve already called your parents. I’ll go see if they’ve made it here or not yet.” MaryEllen smiled again before turning and leaving the room leaving Chailee sitting there staring at the door in dismay. Perfect.
Sitting there on the bed, feet hanging over the side, Chailee kicked her feet gently. She pondered if she laid down and pretended to sleep that her parents wouldn’t bother her. I probably wouldn’t be pretending if I laid down.
No sooner had the idea passed through her mind did she hear hurried footsteps and someone grabbing hold of the door handle to her room. Chailee drooped almost instantly as both her parents rushed into the room. Tanya practically engulfed the teen into a protective hug not wanting to let her go.
“Mom…” Chailee said, her voice muffled by her mother’s shoulder.
“Shhhh...hun.” Tanya said softly as she stroked Chailee’s head before eventually pulling back to give the girl a look over. A wash of relief clearly graced the woman’s face when she saw that her daughter was in fairly good order despite the cuts and bruises.
Mark quickly took his turn with his daughter, giving her a brief hug before also giving her a good look over. “It’s ok Bright Star. The nurse said that you’ll be fine. She said you’re just very exhausted and need rest.” He smiled encouragingly and ran a hand down the side of her face. “We will talk about all of this at home. For right now we just want to get you home.”
Chailee wanted to breath a sigh of relief. The last thing she wanted or needed was to sit here and try to explain things and concoct some sort of lie that would appease her parents and not get her into anymore trouble. So she was not at all going to argue the idea of going home to sleep. At this point all she wanted was the change into pajamas and curl up under her blankets to sleep for days.
It didn’t take long for her parents to get her situated to leave the hospital. After all the paperwork was taken care off at the main desk the small family was finally walking out of the hospital to make their way to the car. By the time they were out of the parking lot and onto the road Chailee was already passed out in the back seat.
