Possibly one of the most terrifying realizations an ignorant or naive person could experience is having their whole reality torn to shreds before their eyes. A large population of the world would be utterly stunned by it, since they had been so sure of what they thought would stay consistent, dismissing any impractical ideas that could shatter their personal illusory reality.
When the sky fell, the world ended on a global scale, as well as within the minds of half the earth's population. The sky darkened, and all electricity ceased to exist on the planet. With no lights, no communication, and nothing even close to what they usually had, people lost hope, fast. In a world of seemingly eternal darkness, one couldn't hope for a future with such a bleak present. Then, this large fraction of the human species that couldn't mentally cope with the literal apocalypse, disappeared. No trace, no warnings, and no bodies. Almost half of the world seemed to vanish, leaving behind loved ones, as well as entire households of people simply deserting. This event became known as The Ascent. What remained of humanity could find no evidence of so many people being killed, so it became common to believe they weren't effected by gravity anymore, and simply floated out into space. This idea which likely began as a joke, or a story told to children, eventually became held as truth, for lack of any other answers.

Shortly after the mysterious disappearance of a large portion of the human population, another fraction of it was differently affected. Just when the last of humanity thought it could not get any worse, when they were just starting to be thankful for what people they had left in their company, the static started. People began to change, go ballistic, and start thrashing everything in their path. When another person stood there, they became even more enraged, and also cannibalistic. This time, no one attempted to explain the insanity, all that could be done was run. The change was unpredictable, no one had been able to explain what caused it. All that was known for sure was they made a loud, horrible sound when they changed, which sounded like amplified static.
The cities emptied, useless in their towering entrapment, the last meager number of people still relatively alive and normal made their way out in various directions, trying to find a place to recreate living again.

With a world drenched in darkness and silence, light and noise had a very short list of causes, not many benevolent. Decades after the ascent and static, the only sign of life out in the open was raw nature, which had begin rapidly taking over what once was theirs before humans became the apex species of the planet. What was left of the human race has since been reduced to small groups dotting the map, and evolved to be more stealthy to improve survival.
