Nadia turned the smore over the oven top and then plated one for Auguste, sitting close to her roommate and giving him a peck on the cheek.
"Was it scary?" She bit into the gooey marshmellow, "Down in the rift? I was really worried about you guys..." She took a moment, "So was Pasha!" The dog seemed to come close and asking for treats though Nadia didn't have much for them.
"Nothing really...really bad happened right?"

He was curled up on the couch, half dozing, half staring into space. The television was on, though Auguste wasn't exactly watching it, the colors and sounds of it just background noise; something he didn't have to pay attention to.
He was only partially aware of Nadia sitting next to him, gaze unfocused, and Auguste did not even react to her presence until he heard the yap of his dog somewhere on the floor in front of them. He came slowly into consciousness, blinking light lashes.
A half shrug, one sleeve of his sweater sliding down his arm.
"No more bad things than usual," said Auguste, missing - or perhaps not hearing - the first question she had asked.

Nadia could tell Auguste was somewhere else thought wise and tilted her head at his distant answer and wondered what made her friend not have his usual cheerful demeanor.
"Auguste." She moved closer to him and looked into his pretty eyes, "Are you okay love?"

He wasn't looking at Nadia, his eyes on the television, though Auguste wasn't really seeing it. Slender fingers tugged absently at an overlong sleeve, a stray thread; idle gestures that didn't seem as though he knew he was even doing them in the first place.
"I'm all right," Auguste said mechanically, but there was the faintest tremor to his voice, as though it was taking a great deal of effort to keep it under control. "Just - I'm just tired, that's all."

No he was not okay, and he wasn't meeting her gaze and that worried her. more then anything else, it worried her that she couldn't coax the troubles from the bright young man.
Which meant it was very, very serious.
She took the remote to the TV and turned it off, not letting her gaze wander from him and then took his face in her own hands, gently kissing both of his cheeks.
"Auguste, my dear, the light of my life, my friend." She murmured, "you are not just tired, or all right. Did something happen in the rift?" she waited, "Something you aren't telling us? Would you like to tell me?"

It took Auguste a moment to realize that the TV had, in fact, been turned off. The abrupt disappearance of extraneous sound and lighting made him blink, caught off guard by the sudden loud silence; and, strangely, terribly, there was a quick sense of panic, because he no longer had anything to focus on.
But Nadia was taking his face in his hands, and her lips were against his cheeks, warm and familiar as she kissed him. He heard the familiar sound of her voice, the concern and the gentleness, and he felt something inside of his chest crack.
One of Auguste's hands rose, paler fingers covering darker ones where they rested on his face. His gaze was still averted, but a steady red flush had started to find its way across his cheeks.
"I - there was just - a lot of blood - " he stammered. " - and a lot of people d - "
He couldn't finish the sentence, his wooden facade beginning to crumble.

She continued to hold his face and kiss tenderly. As she felt the facade of his distance break, her head rested against his forehead and she felt the crumbling of his wall falling.
"People died." She murmured, "I wish you didn't have to see those things." She rubbed his face, drew him into a hug. What did she say? She had seen those things, and death...death scared her, but it was also nesscary in war.
It terrified for her to struggle with how to help Auguste.
"Keep telling me, What else did you see Auguste?"

Don't break.
Don't break.
Hang on.
Nadia was his roommate, the person he privately considered to be an older sister of sorts. Northern and southern lights, heart and soul, she had been the one to draw him into the fold, into their motley little family so that he had not felt alone for the first time in his life. Auguste could not repay Nadia her kindness, and he felt the weight of that now, of all of his guilt and shame and pain.
He could still feel the snap of bones, hear the sickening crunch.
People died. Auguste jerked in Nadia's grasp, his face paling even as Nadia drew him closer. His hand fell away; he could not return the embrace, his eyes wide and unseeing, his arms held limply and loosely at his sides, chin resting on her shoulder.
"Too much," he whispered hoarsely. "A lot - of - blood - "
And Labyrinthite, his face too close, sharp teeth and a hand around his neck.
Kindness has no place in a war.

"There will always be too much." She whispered, "Don't let it kill your heart Auguste. Your kindness, your love is so strong in times like this." she murmured.
"Please don't let it kill the beautiful and amazing person you have become." She shook her head, "and don't be scared of what happens, because We're here for you. All of us."
She breathed out.
"I will do anything for you."

He felt the warmth of Nadia near and soothing, her presence like a balm to his heart. A shiver chased its way down Auguste's spine, and it turned into a tremble a moment later, unable to quell the shaking that had started. One of his hands rose, fisting in the side of Nadia's shirt, and then he was crying, sobbing, the dam breaking, his face pressing hard into her shoulder.
"I don't - I dream of them - " Auguste gasped out, voice muffled. "Of the blood - of the bones - I can't s-stop seeing them every time I close my e-eyes - "

"Oh Auguste." She ran her hand over hair, over his shoulder. She comforted and held him and let the sobs come out. There was nothing she could say, nothing she could do to take that pain away.
"Oh Auguste, I'm sorry, I never should've brought it up. You-" She shook her head. "You are home now, and...and I know, down there...It was a nightmare. But..but you're here now. With me and Colin and Lorne."
She ran her hand through.
"What can I do for you? Please, I'll do anything?"

He felt childish, crying this hard into Nadia's arms, clinging to her as though she was a life support to him. And perhaps she was, but he was all too aware of his own insecurities - of the fact that, out of all of them, he seemed the least able when it came to handling things.
You're so naive. Wasn't that what he kept hearing?
You're here now. With me and Colin and Lorne.
His three favorite people, his family, however small and fractured it was. Even if he could not ever break into the connection those three had among each other - even if he knew he would never have such a unfailing and strong bond with anyone at all - they were the most important people in the world to him. Auguste pressed his face into Nadia's shoulder, giving a shake of his head, his sobs starting to subside into smaller, quieter tears that wetted her shirt. Pale fingers curled in the fabric of her sleeve.
"Just..." he mumbled, voice muffled, so soft it was barely audible. "Don't...give up on me yet. Please."

"I would never give up on you." Nadia said it with such a gentle ferocity. There was nothing in the world that could take Auguste from her arms, not the negaverse, and not the universe and nothing.
He was every much as important to her as Lorne or Colin.
"You are a wonderful amazing person Auguste." She held his face, brushing tears away where she could. "You have a heart of light, you have the courage of a lion. You are everything we need to keep us together." She continued to brush little kisses on his cheek, over his forehead, gently on his lips.
"You're so strong. Soon, it'll show, and you'll be so surprised when it does." She soothed, "Don't give up on yourself Auguste."

She was his sister, if not in blood, in every way that counted. From their spheres that coincided with one another, to their shared apartment, to everything they had been through. Nadia was the one who had brought him into the fold, and it was Nadia who had encouraged him, kept him going when he had not thought he would make it.
Auguste's arms tightened around her, and he tried hard to stop the tears that kept seeping out, sniffing inelegantly. Physical contact had always been an important part of his relationship with all of them, and now was no different. Auguste's eyes fluttered shut as Nadia pressed kisses to his face, a little hiccuping sob escaping.
He felt childish, but her voice soothed him. Auguste leaned forward and pressed his forehead against hers, exhaling a ragged breath.
"I wish it was easier to be strong," he mumbled. "I feel so pathetic compared to all of you."
