The rough crystal wall of her room was familiar against her back, even comfortingly so, despite how hard and cold it was. She’d known this wall for three months, if what Alkaid had said was true, and it had been here beside her through everything. Solid, supportive. And welcome, after the torture of dragging herself all the way back to it from the throne room.

She could add the ache in her knees to her various other pains now, after crawling the whole way back. Between her throbbing ankle and lack of energy, she hadn’t been able to make it to her feet. It had been humiliating, being forced to crawl all the way back to her cell, but Ida suspected that had been entirely the point. Alkaid took every opportunity to visit such things on her, remind her who owned who and who was in charge. But what was pride worth, at this point? It wouldn’t feed her, or keep her uninjured, or give her energy. Giving into Alkaid’s demands was the only way to hoard up what little resources she could and wait for that one moment when she would get a chance…

But Castor brought a new complication to things. He was a prisoner as well, but her plans didn’t include space for two. The senshi was faced with the dilemma of what to do about the prince. Her morals said she couldn’t leave him here. He was a senshi, he fought Chaos, and now he was in the same situation as she was. She couldn’t just leave him here to suffer the way she had. But on the other hand… she didn’t even know if she could save herself, let alone the both of them. He was stronger than she was at a basic level, and to add to that, he had not spent three months wasting away in the dark and cold. One could argue he was better off than she was. Leaving him to fend for himself would involve setting aside everything she believed in to put herself before another, but it would be hard, there was no getting around that.

Ida cradled her sprained wrist against her stomach, trying to ignore the swelling and throbbing pain that came from it and her ankle. The only thing she had to bind it was her scarf, but that only helped marginally. It still hurt, and would until her accelerated healing repaired the damage.

Would Alkaid take her offer? Head back against the wall, she stared up at the dark ceiling and wondered. Hoped. It was her only chance. Her last chance maybe. There was nothing she could do from here without her senshi phone… getting taken to Earth was the only thing that offered even a remote possibility. She had to hope the ascended’s greed would get the better of her. It was all she had left.

It had been a long night - or day? Alkaid could never truly be sure. During the hours after Ida had left them alone, Alkaid began her duties with Castor. His wild laughter and pained groans filled the walls of the hollow castle and echoed like ghosts along the corridors. If it had been her choice, she simply would have killed him, but he was too precious a thing to simply give back to the cauldron for next time.

By the time she found herself ascending the stairs and trailing down the corridor to what had been Ida's room during her stay, Alkaid knew exactly what she meant to do about her situation. At the end of the day, Ida was only worth as much to her as she could give - and her energy supplies were running on empty. If this were a trap, Alkaid had faith that she could put a stop to it - there was nothing that would stop her from killing Ida at the slightest hint of foul play.

The woman stopped just outside of the doorway to the room and readjusted the small suitcase she carried in one hand. The other hand, strangely smooth and unbroken, pushed the door open with a slow creak. As it did in her presence, the room became brighter, showering a tall, pale woman in light. It wasn't Alkaid, not truly, but the ghost of the girl whose starseed she had been born of.

Kaia smiled at the eternal politely as she entered the room, showing off long pale legs beneath the sheer skirt of her flowing, white dress. The suitcase in her hand was leather-bound with clasps, a little worn around the edges, but in good condition none-the-less. One had to wonder if the trickster truly kept such things stored somewhere in her castle, or if they had belonged to some other, unfortunate soul before this moment. The smile on her lips gave no hints.

"I suppose we should take a look at those injuries, hm?" Her feet were bare where they touched the crystals, though she did not flinch from the coolness they kept. One hand fisted in her skirts as she sat down gracefully near Ida, placing the suitcase next to her. "I wouldn't want anyone thinking I'm a bad hostess."

If it was a joke, it was hard to say.

She seemed smaller in her glamour, and not just because she'd lost inches of her typical height by going barefoot. Nor was it the shorter, less bulky dreads hanging around her shoulders. Most of all, it was the energy signature - or the lack of such. All of her was contained in this small, pale figure of a girl that no longer existed.

"Can I see your hand?" Her own extended, with perfect, rosy palms.

The door creaked and it pulled Ida out of her doze, clearing away the fog of exhaustion and pain as she lifted her head.

The woman standing at the door gave her pause, just for a moment... She looked like an angel or a ghost, all in pale creams and peaches, her feet bare. But Ida had seen this face before, that night months ago. Knowing this was the human face of her captor, seeing it now after what had transpired in the throne room made fear flutter in her stomach.

The specter glided closer on silent feet and Ida watched her warily, running her tongue across dry lips. This was another mind game... Alkaid had a plan and whatever it was, it wasn't going to be good for her. Ida's honey-brown eyes narrowed as the woman knelt in front of her.

Tender her injuries? Why?

"I... know you don't really care. I've healed fine before, by myself..." She said warily. Despite that, she slowly extended her injured hand to Alkaid in her glamour. She had considered, for a crazy moment, refusing, but it wouldn't have done her any good. Whatever Alkaid wanted, she was going to have it... fighting would only make it worse.

That didn't mean she wasn't braced for the worst, though... a dozen scenerios running through her mind, just one of them the ascended grabbing and breaking her wrist completely.

"It'll be fine in a day or two."

"It might surprise you, but I do actually know what I'm doing, Ida."

The fingers curled gently and held her swollen wrist securely in her palm. Her free hand raised and began to gently test what damage had been done beneath the skin - though it was somewhat harder due to dulled senses, which also meant her pressure was only her best guess at what she needed. At times too much, at times too light for her to feel anything at all. Despite the bit of sloppiness, her fingers did move in a knowing way across the bruised flesh.

"A bit rusty, perhaps."

Her eyes seemed oddly intent, as if she were truly intrigued in her own diagnoses. It was simple though - fight enough bad guys, watch enough soldiers fall - anyone would eventually be able to diagnose the common injuries.

She stopped her careful examination and lowered Ida's wrist back down to where she had been holding it before, then hooked her fingers in the handle of her suitcase before she pulled it towards her. When the clasps were released, it was revealed to be an over-sized medical kit. If she were being honest, she didn't remember the last time she had opened it. Probably before she ascended, when she was still stubbornly trying to save the forgotten soldiers that died for their cause. She'd come to appreciate the terms of a sacrifice since those days.

Her bright eyes looked up from the suitcase as her pale fingers closed around some binding wrap.

"Is it just the wrist?"

The battered senshi had to brace herself against wincing or making any noise as Alkaid probed her sprained wrist. It hurt to be handled, even if the hands on her made an attempt at a professional touch.

It was strange to watch the ascended play nurse... and a bit insulting. She didn't care, and Ida knew it. There was no secrets there. The only problem is that Alkaid knew she knew... so why the act? There was an angle here, some plan... but she was at a loss to figure out what it was. More pain, undoubtedly, but why so elaborate a build up?

Brown eyes watched with a wariness to them until she spoke again, flicking from her face to the bandages and back.

How much to tell her? In truth, there was a terrible headache behind her eyes, radiating inwards from the goose-egg that had formed where her skull had met the stone steps. It was hard to tell, just through self diagnosis, how bad her concussion was, though she was sure she had one. She'd been nauseous for weeks and exhausted besides. It could easily contribute to the difficulty she had focusing her eyes or her thoughts. Her ankle ached as well, but not as badly as the wrist she held. None of it was anything Alkaid could do much about... only rest and her transcended healing would help.

"Yes." She lied, sitting docilely as the ascended held her wrist. "I'm bruised all over, but the wrist is the worst. Everything else will mend in a few days."

That probably wasn't true, but Alkaid didn't think it necessarily worth the effort of fighting her just to assess everything that ached. That would cause more harm than good and, in the end, Alkaid really didn't care that much. It didn't mean anything to her if Ida did or did not suffer in her care. She had reasons to assert her violence, just like she now had reasons to be gentle.

"I think your healing has become strained." She pulled a length of binding free and reached back out to take Ida's hand. As she began wrapping, it became clear that she did understand how to perform minor first aid. When she wasn't required to be as delicate she could still recall motions she had repeated dozens of times. "Which means that very soon, your body will start to wear out."

The way she delivered the news was dry, with her bright eyes still concentrated on her work with her wrist. Once it was finished, she let it go, allowing Ida to curl it back into her lap if she wanted. Without the injury to tend to, however, her attention reverted back to Ida's face.

"I've gotten all I needed from you, Ida. All I wanted to know was how long it would take you, start to finish. How long could you supply me?" She smiled then, as if she were pleased with the results. It was almost endearing, if it weren't for the way her eyes narrowed on her captive ever so slightly, a predator whose prey had finally succumbed to venom. "I know the answer, more or less."

The bright, citrine eyes examined the form of the battered Eternal in silence for a moment. Her hair was fraying in its braid, her fuku was grimy, and there wasn't a span of her skin that could be seen without a bruise or cut. She might have lasted a bit longer had she not been quite so stubborn but Alkaid appreciated it, in a way. It suggested a more tame captive might survive a bit longer. With a small noise of consideration, she looked down into her kit and plucked up a pair of scissors.

She tested them, opening and closing them several times and listening to the soft, metallic 'shick, shick'.

"To be honest, I don't even know if I really have time for another one of your kind right now with my unexpected capture of the Prince. Can you understand that dilemma?" Her fingers continued to open and close the scissors in her hand as she brought her eyes back up with her question, even tilting her head slightly as she considered the look in Ida's eyes. "Why it's just easier to kill you?"

The pain didn't disappear when her wrist was bandaged, but the support took some of the strain away, which helped remarkably. Her own makeshift bandaging, with a scarf and one good hand, had been mediocre, at best. As Ida pulled her wrist back, she was even grateful for the care, fake as it was.

And as she had known she would, as soon as Ida had been tended too, Alkaid's manner shifted. She spoke in a conversational way, but her captive had been here too long not to see the very real threat behind every gentle word.

It was true... she had run dry. Her recovery had come more and more slowly with every repeated draining with no time to truly recover. No visits to Ida had been the worst of it though... lack of time on her planet left her weakened and empty. Without an extensive rest, there was very little more Alkaid could get from her, and in time, her body would even start to break down... maybe already was...

When the woman pulled the scissors from her kit, Ida's eyes widened and she felt a flash of panic. She struggled to push it down as it crowded up into her throat, threatening to choke off her air. For all that she knew she wouldn't last much longer in Alkaid's tender care... she wasn't ready to give up yet. Something deep inside rebelled against giving in to her end.

"Its easier..." She stammered out, forcing it past the lump in her throat. "But wasteful. I know at least seven other transcendeds, and it seemed like hardly any effort for you to take me once you had me here. How much effort had it taken to take Castor? You're... horribly strong."

All of it was true, and that was the horrible part. Alkaid was a monster, had never ceased to be a monster in Ida's eyes after all this time. There was nothing human left in that husk, no matter how she looked or acted.

"It has to be more effort to hunt down citizens of the city to drain... and I bet they don't give you as much pure energy. Spend a little effort now, save more later when you can simply... walk into a room and take what you want..."

Brown eyes watched the scissors warily, a very real fear in Ida's tired face. In her mind, a hundred different places she could be cut flashed through her mind. There was horror in every thought of missing fingers, toes, ears...

"You can stop trying to sell your worth to me, Ida. My decision is made. All of this is really just a formality."

The words were spoken bluntly, without any attempt at sugar coating. Things were as they were and Alkaid was not very apt to change them over a few appealing cries from a creature she, to be brutally and totally honest, did not care about. Of course, there were other things that could change her mind - like unexpected appeals from unexpected people. The human Alkaid settled her scissors in her lap carefully and reached to pluck a scroll of paper from amidst the the emergency kit at her side. She held it up in the tips of her fingers and waved it lightly for Ida to see, drawing her attention to the scrap.

"Hvergelmir sent me a letter, today. Can you guess why?"

Amber eyes shifted from where they had been staring at Ida, focusing instead upon the little scroll of paper held in her fingertips. She rolled it between them slowly, then curled it down into her fist and lifted her eyes back up to Ida's. She seemed to be considering her for a moment before finally, she raised her free hand and made a small circular motion with her pointer finger.

"Turn around."

Ida's lips thinned at the rebuke and she fell silent, though the fear had not lessened any. Formality... what did that mean? Did it mean anything? Should she be reassured, or more worried?

Alkaid's pleasantly blank face gave no indication of what she had decided, so Ida was left scrabbling about for the answer.

She had bandaged her wrist without further harm. She might have even tended other wounds. Why do that, why bother, if death was the end goal? Alkaid liked games, but truly, what had she gained?

The blonde pulled a scrap of paper out of her bag and Ida went still, blinking owlishly at it. Somewhere deep inside, she felt her heart cry out for that tiny bit of paper... she wanted to touch it, to hold it, to read the words written on the page by a gentle hand she had come to love... but Alkaid was saying something and Ida forced her eyes away from it, focusing instead on her captor. It was a struggle not to let the sudden apprehension show on her face and she wasn't sure if she managed or not.

A hand lifted and gestured a circle as the ascended commanded she turn and for a fleeting moment, staring at that little bit of paper, Ida wanted to refuse. She wanted to glare defiance into the creature's golden eyes and say No. If you're going to kill me, then have the honor to face me while you do it and look me in the eye.

But she didn't.

For months, she had been biding her time. Waiting. She had worked towards this moment, struggled to find some avenue that might, at long last, buy her an opportunity. Even as her heart rebelled, her mind clamped down on it as it had so many other times, reminding her of what she was trying to do, what was waiting for her, if she succeeded.

Pride is worth little, next to a life.

Slowly, Ida dropped her eyes to the floor and turned, hobbling on her knees and her one good hand till she had put her back to the ascended. She sat tall on them, clasping her injured arm close to her stomach. She had to trust. Had to accept. She had to be like the Earth, weathering the storm. She could do this.

Her heart fluttered like wings in her throat.

"I don't know why Hvergelmir sent you a letter." She murmured softly. And it was true, in part. She knew it was probably because of the text she had sent her, the one she had not admitted to Alkaid that she had sent. But as to why Hver would have sent a letter... she had to know she was taking a risk, alerting the ascended to what she had done. So there had to be a reason, some method that wonderful mind had put together to get her out of here...

"What did it say?"

Alkaid dropped the letter lightly among the things in her box and used that hand to shuffle through the different odds and ends, tubes and bandages and medical tape. Her hand closed around something and set it in her own lap as Ida turned in place and put her back to the ascendant, as requested. She doubted very seriously that she had truly tamed the girl but she seemed to realize her compliance earned her better treatment, for now.

"That's between Hvergelmir and I."

There was the sound of the scissors being opened, a long, slow scratch of sharpened metal on metal. She leaned up slightly onto her own knees and reached around the eternal, palm up, so that she could see the cellphone in her open hand. The scissors were balanced point up behind the girl's head but her own face leaned forward with the motion of presenting the phone, so that her lips were at Ida's ear. When she spoke, it was low and soft, but spoken with an edge of command.

"Tell her that I will find her tonight, where we met last. That is the only thing you are to tell her or anyone." She cut her eyes to the phone and nodded her head, a clear signal to get on with it.

Of course she wouldn't share the letter. Ida stifled a longing sigh, but accepted it. All she wanted was to read the words and pretend to hear them in Hver's voice... but Alkaid didn't do small comforts. She didn't give up anything unless there was a reason for it.

All of this had to have a reason.

Ida heard the scissors open behind her and she tensed against a shiver of fear and revulsion, feeling Alkaid come up behind her in her human guise. Suddenly, her phone appeared in her vision and she blinked at it for a moment before reaching to take it.

Everything seemed pinned on this little device, and it was in her hands again... But Alkaid had plans, as ever.

To Hver, and no one else.

But at least she could reach out to her, even this little bit, and for a little while, pretend she could touch the other.

"Alright." Ida murmured softly as she thumbed open the contacts and selected Hver's, beginning to type out a message for her.

Shazari
Hver ~ Alkaid says she will find you tonight where you met her last.

There was a deep urge to include some small something at the end, to let her know how much she cared about her, how much she missed her... but she didn't want to push her luck with the strict Ascended behind her with scissors.

When she was done, she held it up for approval before she hit send.

Alkaid watched eagerly as the eternal began to tap the words out across the screen. Cellphones had been something beyond her technological abilities even before she had become something so beyond the needs of human communication. Khalla herself had never been very tech savvy, either.

"Good girl, Ida."

The praise was cold, but humored. Her cracked, pale fingertips caught the phone once the darker thumb mashed 'send' and sent her message through whatever network these white moon kingdom had established, then deposited it carelessly in the suitcase of assorted things. Once it had rejoined the letter she refused to share, Alkaid rocked back and settled into a kneel behind Ida, abandoning the looming stare over her shoulder.

"Just one last thing, before I go to meet with your little friend." Her free hand reached up and caught Ida's braid by the middle, wrapping her long fingers around the thick cord of hair. It held her braid in place as the scissors raised up to position the blades around the edge of her plait. "Sit still."

The scissors closed the first time, meeting the resistance of her hair and snapping it, a clean cut through the first inch of dark locks. A pleased smile tugged at her lips as her strong hands opened the blades and inched them forward, cutting the next section in a steady line. If Ida knew what was good for her, she would simply sit still and let the damage be done - hair was such a vain obsession, anyway. As the last snip cut through the remainder of her plate, the tension weighing Ida's head down was released and the braid fell across Alkaid's lap, sprawling dark against her stockings. The scissors dropped with a clutter to their box and she claimed her prize with a pleased, wicked smile.

"I think that's all I need from you today."

Ida was disappointed, but resigned, when the phone was reclaimed as soon as she finished. She had hoped, faintly, to see some message back, just a moment of seeing words Hver had written... but Alkaid had never cared much about her comfort, emotional or physical.

The senshi folded her hands in her lap when there was nothing more to do with them. Was that all Alkaid had planned? It seemed almost too simple...

And then she felt something take hold of her braid, tugging her head backwards as fear sent her heart pounding in her chest. A wave of nausea came with the adrenaline and the room spun around her dizzily.

Just one more thing... sit still.

The eternal tensed, and then there was a soft snick and the feel of something in her hair. It crept like bugs across her scalp and she shuddered, realizing.

Alkaid was cutting her hair.

Ida's fingers clenched in her lap to keep from reaching to stop her, her inner voice firmly reminding her it was just hair. Better hair than something else. Better hair than her life... but every snip of the scissors behind her loosened more of her dark strands and she couldn't help remembering how long she had been growing it out. Years... since she was old enough to brush it and tie it back herself. Her father had clipped it short, at first, in an effort to reduce the maintenance he wasn't really equipped to do for his young daughter. She had been so proud, being able to take care of it herself, and wanting it to grow as long as possible...

Finally, the scissors snipped through the last strands and Ida's head was freed, rocking forward in a sickeningly light way. It made her stomach roil and she couldn't stop herself this time as she reached up to feel the damage that had been done. The loose strands by her face still reached to her collarbones, but the rich brown braid that had fallen past her hips was gone entirely... all her fingers found was roughly clipped ends below the base of her skull.

Alkaid proclaimed herself done and Ida could only sit numbly, staring at the floor.

This was another ploy, another attempt at breaking her spirit, that much she was sure of. Ida felt the new injustice layer with the many other she had collected over these last few months and she tucked it deep into a private part of her heart.

Soon. Soon, she would be able to let them out. She just had to be patient, and careful.

Alkaid draped the braid across her lap carefully as she set about arranging all the odds and ends in the small suitcase so that nothing was spilling over the seams. Then came two pointed, careful clicks of the clasps that signaled it had been closed, followed by a small shuffle as she rose back up to her full height - minus the usual heels her powered form provided her.

Her bright eyes stared down at Ida where she loomed behind the eternal, following the stroke of her fingers through the newly shorn hair. The expression on her face was blank as she studied the set of the girl's shoulders, the way her head hung to let her stare at the floor. If she thought it was a victory, it was hard to tell. Ida did continue to surprise her - but so would she continue to try and break her. Some compliance was necessary if the eternal ever thought Alkaid meant to actually let her leave and she was glad to see the mostly lackluster reaction.

"I enjoyed our little chat, Ida." Alkaid's pale, bare feet turned as she headed toward the door. One hand gripped her suitcase lightly while the other held Ida's braid above the floor by the loose end, like she were carrying prized game. It was a useful thing, to have something that reminded others of the risk they were taking.

"I'll see you later," was the last promise before she disappeared and the door shut firmly behind her.
