He prowled the darkness like a predator. Sometimes the mage would be more beast than human in the way he carried himself through the night wilderness. Others may have stumbled in the shadows or hesitated at the strange noises from the giant trees of Jauhar, but Kian continued moving forward. Unlike his mentor who seemed more pacifist than fighter, the mage was intent on learning how to destroy everything in his path. Magic was his ally and its destruction was his creed.
Wasn’t that the best way to power after all?
Yet, in his heart he was troubled. Something that had been sleeping for so long was finally beginning to stir. Seeing all of these faces from his past had made certain of that. His twin and his childhood friend were both coming closer and he was powerless to stop it. It was like a slap to the face that fate could so easily continue pushing things together that he had once been desperate to stop. How would his twin judge him?
It was such thoughts that really riled the mage tonight. So when the predator met other predators of Jauhar he wasn’t about to back down. The Radaku snarled at him, all five of them emerging from the trees as a group, in warning. This was their territory and the presence of this hybrid felt more like a predator than an earthling to them. His very essence screamed for a fight and the beasts were more than eager to oblige his wishes. The first one, the largest and probably an alpha, charged forward with its fangs flashing in the night.
Kian didn’t hesitate as he allowed it close enough. Grabbing the beast with his hands he stopped it only a few inches away from his face. Its breath was foul, freshly scented with the blood of some other beast, and Kian couldn’t help crinkling his nose. “Alright then.” He didn’t want to use his magic here though. He felt too frustrated for that. Twisting forward the mage tumbled with the radaku and after the two rolled on the forest floor they separated and began twisting around each other. Attack after attack, Kian almost felt as if the creature were controlling the winds as its fast attacks sent air flying past him.
Finally he managed to reach out and grab its tail. Once more they began to twist around on the ground, claws and knives clashing together. A blur of two shadows locked into combat. Eventually though Kian’s blade managed to get through the claws and teeth. Once the nick was made on the creature’s throat he found that the others were not so patient as to wait any longer. So much for one at a time. Frowning, Kian tumbled backwards as one managed to get a claw to glance his arm, “Thanks.” Just what he wanted…more scars.
As another launched itself Kian cursed. Perhaps taking on five at once wasn’t the brightest idea. Yet, something like this would be far less fun without a challenge. The thought made a grin cross his face. Oh yes, a challenge was always appreciated. Catching the radaku’s weight, Kian tumbled back down to the ground. He would have a fun pattern of bruises from this encounter, but he was determined to leave the radaku with something more.
A light glow coursed through his body as his runs reacted with him. He would see how the beasts like a little shock here and there. He still wanted the physical challenge, but a little lightning surely wouldn’t be too much interference. The thought allowed his magic to light up and suddenly two of the beasts were sent scurrying off with awful limps. They were the smart ones…the other three, however, may not have been so fortunate this night.
Tearing into each other the predators of the night began their dance again. Snarls and curses filled the air as the four beings tangled in the forest floor. Dirt, blood, and grim coated Kian’s skin by the time he managed to stand apart from the pack. The alpha was on its side breathing heavily and as the mage walked forward he stopped. It would be so easy to just twist its neck….yet the thought of his twin made him pause. Humanity shined in those previously cold eyes and the hybrid backed away. He would leave them alone. At least they had provided good entertainment.
The other two were more still, but he could see the faintest of movements. They would be fine given some rest. Rolling his eyes at his own sudden softness against the creatures, Kian dragged them out of obvious sight and underneath the tall twisting roots of a tree. A faint stream of water cut through there and he placed his fingers under the cooling stream. As the waters swirled around his fingers he sighed. It seemed that even though he was training he was still stuck. Even now he had cuts and bruises from the beasts….another should have been able to eliminate them at once. Perhaps if I relied more on magic, but what’s the point? He didn’t want to become some stiff mage who was powerless without spells. His body, lean and muscled, attested to that. He had trained day and night to get his body to the level of a trained assassin and other weapons were not awkward in his hands. Yet, he still struggled and bled.
He was far from perfect, but these little challenges would continue to shape him. One day at a time…now he would go back towards the caravan and rest for a few hours. After that he would get up and start again, but this time under his mentor’s tutoring. Fighting like a beast was for the shadows of the night, while during the day he trained as any normal magic apprentice would. It was a strange life that mixed both play and sacrifice on his part. “You’ll never understand how easy you have it sometimes.” Murmured Kian towards the sleeping radaku before he got up and brushed the scarlet drops of waters away from his arms.
Oh well, time to go home…
