Since the discovery of the journal in Algie's shop, things had escalated one after the other for Autumn in a way she wasn't entirely comfortable with. Pax was one thing, but talking to Rosalinde and some of her other discoveries... needless to say, it was starting to get to her. So, being of sane body and mind, she'd reached out to the one person who seemed to have a better grasp on this whole ******** mess than she did.
Jeremiah.
Which is why she was currently sitting in the park, Rosalinde tucked neatly in her lap as she waited. The cat looked up to her with curious eyes, and butted her gently.
'Why do you worry? Silly girl. This is not the worst thing to happen,' the cat commented, likely intending to be helpful in her words. Unfortunately, it wasn't helpful at all, and Autumn leveled Rosalinde with a look.
"That doesn't make me feel any better," she muttered, petting the soft fur to try and soothe her nerves. Maybe Jeremiah would arrive and tell her this s**t wasn't as bad as she was making it out to be. The journal she'd written, but hadn't written... the singing thing...
Yeah. Autumn was really, really starting to get a bad feeling about all of this.

"Autumn?" Jeremiah called out as he saw her, sitting on one of the park benches with Rosalinde. She looked several levels of stressed out. He had heard from Algie about the journal - they both had kittens now - and with everything else that he he knew, it was not so out of place. Sometimes the detective thought they were playing out parts that they had already done long ago. Hellbine was with him as well, the kitten having again made a space for himself between Jeremiah's collar and his neck. It was a nice little warm nook that also kept his human a little warmer. Coming to a stop in front of her, he crouched down to look up at her face and study it. "You doing alright?"

"I've been keeping an eye on my powers. Looking out for anything... weird. Like you told me." On the day he forgot, but the point still stood. Jeremiah likely remembered the rules of magic in this world, considering how well he'd described them. Just weird things. Not huge ones. Only... this felt a little more than just a casual happenstance. This was definitely something else.
"Get down, baby," she patted Rosalinde gently, who rose from Autumn's lap and fixed Jeremiah with a pointed look. Autumn rose from the bench, and walked a ways away from Jeremiah and the two cats. She paused a moment, and glanced backwards.
"You don't get to judge my taste in music, okay? Okay."
With that, Autumn cleared her throat, and began singing.
"No, I don't want your number. No, I don't wanna give you mine and no, I don't wanna meetcha nowhere, no, don't want none of your time-"
As odd as singing may have seemed, what followed up was even odder. As the song went on, and Autumn continued singing, a small bird fluttered over and landed on her extended arm. Followed by another, and another. A squirrel skittered over from the bushes and climbed up her shoulder, oddly content to be in her presence. And Autumn just... kept singing, even as a rat approached.
"--and I know that he cannot approach me. 'Cause I'm lookin' like class and he's lookin' like trash, can't get with a dead-beat a**, no-" She stopped, then, and the animals remained. Jittery, now, but still perched around her. Autumn, for her part, did not seem entertained at all.
"...This is getting out of hand," She said plainly, gesturing with her gaze to the birds and the squirrel.
"I didn't sign up for this s**t."

Before standing, Jeremiah scooped Hellbine up and settled him onto the bench next to his mother. The small otherkitten did not hesitate to butt his head against his mother and then curl up next to her and watch the humans. Jeremiah only cocked an eyebrow about the comment about not judging her taste in music. "Trust me when I say that, in that regard, I am the last person to worry about." The detective was not instantly judgemental in most cases - that required specific circumstances. People were, until they proved otherwise, given the benefit of the doubt. On his feet, he followed the young woman until she stopped and she was singing. Then there were animals, small ones that were flocking to her. They did not even seem bothered by the fact that he was there, more focused on Autumn than anything else. It was ... He blinked. Rubbed at his forehead with a hand. "Autumn, I don't know how to tell you this," he sighed, blue-green eyes focusing on her, "but I think the universe wants you to be a Disney princess." It was a very wry look that he was giving her. "Joking aside," it helped that he was comfortable enough with her to actually joke, "I also imagine it's more than you anticipated but sometimes there's reasons for the abilities we gain." Still he knew how it could be frustrating to have things like this happen, especially for someone like Autumn who had just wanted to get her bathbombs out of the mail.

"You know, when I said I wanted to change the world, I didn't think it was gonna be through musicals and talking animals. I'd better get a bangin' ballgown out of this. And a prince, too." Now that she had finished singing, the spell seemed to be over- yet none of the animals fled in a panic. Rather, it was that they wandered away, having lost interest in Autumn. With her arms free from the birds and squirrel, Autumn lowered them back to her sides and sighed. She stepped gently over the rat, careful not to harm it, and returned to the bench with Jeremiah.
"What am I supposed to do, though? There's some big nasty-a** thing in the Otherworld that wants to ********, I don't know, kill us and eat us. And I sing to animals." She sighed, sitting down on the bench. Rosalinde immediately returned to her lap, watching her princess child delightedly. The humans could talk about their human-things, she had a son to reunite with.
"I wanna help, Chief. But I don't know how. Talking to animals isn't really... I don't know. I'm feeling really overwhelmed and ******** worthless." She smiled sardonically.
"Even if I look damn good as a princess."

Jeremiah watched with a fairly neutral expression, though his eyes gave him away more than anything else. That slight twitch upwards of his lips as well. He could understand her frustration all too well. "You don't strike me as the waiting for the prince to come to you type," he replied, "I fully expect you to be rescuing him." Or her. The detective had no qualms obviously. Hearing the term otherworld again he rolled his eyes. Still not quite down with the comparison to Silent Hill. "There is not always an explanation to why we get these abilities. Nor do they always make sense," he replied, following her back and sitting down on the bench himself. Hellbine had absolutely no problem with climbing up with his mother into Autumn's lap. Mostly because he was totally going to rat out about how large Violetta was going to get. She was so lazy but that really had to do with Jeremiah's Algie and his hands. Warm, warm hands. "Like I said, I'm absolutely certain you are the princess that saves the prince." Jeremiah raked a hand through his hair, making a mental note to at least get it trimmed. "If you can sing and do that with these animals, who's to say you couldn't eventually do that to something that means to do harm? You already showed that you've got a natural talent for it - look at how you handled Pax." Then, because he clicked. "... talking to animals?" Moonstone Dazzle ur kitten will rat u out, jeremiah. watch it.

"If I ever find a guy whose face I don't wanna break, anyway," Autumn lamented, thinking back on her dating life. Tinder and Bumble had not been kind to her- too many ******** looking just for hookups or fetishy s**t on those apps. Mind you, she had no beef with hookups. Every now and again, those kind of things were necessary for getting by. But honestly, she just... really wanted someone reliable to fall back on. Someone warm at night.
Was it so much to ask!?
"Why are you rolling your eyes at Otherworld? Isn't that what it's called?" She blinked, sitting a little more upright. That was what she'd heard it referred to, anyway, by other people. Did it have a formal name? s**t, was she offending Pax when she discussed Otherness?
But then the conversation moved on, and Autumn beamed.
"Oh, yeah! That's a new thing, man. Talking to animals." She cleared her throat, and looked down to Hellbine.
"Hey there... Hellbine, wasn't it?" She'd recalled that from the journal. It was too bizarre not to hone in on, really. Rosalinde prodded her child with a paw, willing him to listen to the human.
"What's going on in your life?"

"Sometimes it's the one who breaks your face that is worth keeping," Jeremiah snorted, then realized what he said and pushed a hand against his face. At least the bruising was gone at this point. "Mostly because I am aware of horror games like Silent Hill and I would rather not attach that to other ashdown." Which was what he called it but he was losing that battle (had lost it with Algie). "I don't know that there's a real name for it. It's a cage, there are otherbeings there, and it is an otherworld but personal preferences have me refusing to call it that." Then he was blinking at the news that Autumn could talk to animals and was going to talk to Hellbine. This ... Jesus ******** Christ.Hellbine blinked at the paw prodding, head raising, 'You don't have to nudge me, mother. I was already listening.' He turned his attention to Autumn with a low mreow. 'It is Hellbine,' he agreed with another noise, 'and I was telling mother how lazy and fat Violetta is going to get. Algie pets her and she just melts.' An annoyed chirp of a meow. 'Like him.'Except it worked on him too.

'My princess, so concerned about other's appearances,' Rosalinde sighed, pleased with her child. Appearances were, after all, the most important thing. Sure, personalities meant something, but people always assessed you based on how you looked. Rosalinde knew this all too well, and it was why she and her children always looked the best. She licked Hellbine's scalp, pleased immensely with this development.
Autumn, meanwhile, was doing her damndest to choke back laughter. Tears were building in her eyes, and she chewed on her lower lip, before finally having the emotional stability to look up to Jeremiah without busting a gut.
"So congratulations are in due order for your healthy romantic life," Autumn teased, trying so damn hard not to laugh. It was just ******** precious. Little kids- of any species, apparently- were always honest and forthright... even if they didn't get the meaning of what they were saying. Oh, but Autumn did. And that s**t was HILARIOUS. In thanks for the incredible laughter, she scratched Hellbine beneath the chin.
"You're a sweetheart, baby," she addressed the kitten, pleased beyond reason. Giving one to Jeremiah had definitely been a FANTASTIC idea.

Hellbine let out a pleased purr. Yes, Princess Hellbine. He preened underneath his mother's approving lick. Mother knew him so well. 'I tried telling Violetta that she just can't lay around but she doesn't listen.' Another meow that sounded like a sigh. Jeremiah was blinking, looking between the cats and then Autumn and then look on her face and then ... He leaned back against the bench, rubbing a hand across his face. "I don't think I quite like the idea of you being able to talk to Hellbine." A blue-green eye was visible between fingers flicking between Autumn and the cats. Then he straightened up and huffed a breath out. Especially when Hellbine seemed to purr quite loudly at being scratched and complimented. 'Princess,' he told Autumn primly, 'Princess sweetheart Hellbine.' Not that he quite grasped what was so funny. Nor did Jeremiah who just waited for Autumn's chuckles to die down. "As I gather he's ratted us out, I would appreciate if you - aside from what people already assume and talk about - don't mention it to Zac?" He knew that Autumn and Zac talked. Never mind what other people around town said and thought. "... that's something I - we - need to talk about versus him finding out." Another rub of his fingers across his forehead before he lowered his hand back down finally.

Her laughter quieted, eased away by the feeling of just being happy around good company. Nonetheless, Autumn smiled, continuing to pet the adorable Hellbine. Yes, Jeremiah had definitely been an excellent choice to give one of the kittens to. She was just over the moon with how all of this was turning out. Friendship and kittens- what more was there in life?
"Princess. Princess Sweetheart Hellbine, I'll remember that. Thank you." She acquiesced to Hellbine, scratching behind his ears and under his chin. Just as personality-driven as his mother, how lovely. Rosalinde, for all of her commentary, seemed completely and utterly pleased. She was, however, going to have words with her other child- wasting away! What nerve! They had an image and countenance to maintain, after all!
Autumn grew more serious at the comment to Zac, and shook her head.
"Look. I laugh at a lot of things, but I take family seriously. And talking to family. I wouldn't go ratting you out on anything to him you weren't comfortable with." She looked at him very openly, and there was... hurt, most likely, behind her eyes. But was it directed at Jeremiah? Who knew.
"You're good to him, and you're good to be open with him. I wouldn't jeopardize a good family relationship for a laugh or two."
Even Rosalinde picked up on her other-child (as Autumn had now been adopted by the cat, clearly), turning to look up to the other human as well. She blinked, slowly. Waiting.

Hellbine was very pleased, so very pleased. His purr was a near constant noise, especially at the rubs and scritches. The amount of flowers around the bench they were sitting on was growing by the moment. Jeremiah honestly had no idea himself how to deal with Princess Sweetheart Hellbine. Really. (Somehow it made perfect sense, it was his kitten. Of course it would want to be a princess.) The look on Autumn's face however after she spoke, the tightness to her eyes and tone ... Jeremiah's lips pressed to thin frown. "I don't think you'd do something like that, Autumn." The detective was not even sure it was directed at him but he never did enjoy seeing someone with that particular look in their eyes. "After what I saw you do and talking with you, I can tell that." A hand reached out, fingers resting on her shoulder. It was meant to be a reassuring, fatherly touch (one he no longer even thought about, just reacted and did) because it looked like she needed it. (Also because touch for him was only for those he trusted, not just anyone.) "On the other hand, I am absolutely certain that you would deck someone for mocking it." The relationship or any relationship. She was given a wry grin. "As you do look like you can handle yourself."

"Thanks, Chief. I just..." There wasn't really a whole lot to add. Nothing that she was comfortable with sharing, anyway. She had come to Ashdown to escape her past, not relive it. And here was Jeremiah, pushing out of his grumpy old man box to try and comfort her. All in all, it was really sweet. She forced a smile, but paused.
"Oh! Damn, I cannot believe I almost forgot." Hellbine and Rosalinde still in her lap, Autumn reached around the cats to her purse, digging around in the oversized bag. Finally, she pulled out two things- the journal, which apparently contained future information to their lives, and a small amount of salve.
"The bottle is um. A protective salve. You can put it on your clothes, your door, yourself. Pax taught me how to make it," She explained, handing both to Jeremiah. "It'll keep you safe from The Enemy."
And then, there was the journal.
"I'm sure Algie told you... that's a journal I wrote. But not really me. I don't know how else to explain it, but I figured you might pick something up from reading it. It's about cats," she added lamely, trying to make the thing sound less piss terrifying in her own mind.

Autumn was moving quickly, speaking about the salve before he could actually say anything else. He gave her shoulder another squeeze before he was taking the objects that she was offering to him. Jeremiah held the bottle of salve up to the light, looking at it before he looked back to her. "Firstly, thank you, Autumn. I mean it." Something that would keep him safe from The Enemy was good indeed but then ... "Just be mindful to not speak about that." The Enemy. "As silly as it sounds, it's a bit like Voldemort," nothing like a British man saying that, "and speaking directly about it is not good." The bottle was slipped away into his pocket, Jeremiah turning his attention to the book and rested his hand against it. "Algie did mention this book. The idea that we've been at this ..." Before, already have, were going to be ... It was something that he still had mixed feelings about. His fingers slid along the cover before he finally opened it up and flipped through a few pages just to have a look. The detective stopped at a random page, reading over what it said. So all of Rosalinde's precious little babies take after their mom- not only in looks, but how precious they are. Turns out, Hellbine can hide s**t in his fur- like some precious little messenger! Princess Sweetheart (as he demands) brought me the best gift ever. Seriously, a Kate Spade clutch!!! Best. Gift. Ever. He raised an eyebrow, blue-green eyes glancing towards Hellbine who was contentedly being looked after by his mother and then held the book back out for Autumn. "At least it looks like you'll be getting something to help accessorize in the future?"

"It's not an idea, I don't think. We've failed before. I got confirmation." Autumn smiled sadly, looking away from Jeremiah. There was a lump in her throat. He only thought it was an idea, then. But Pax had confirmed. Pax had seen, in her mind...
It was too much. Standing up abruptly, Autumn turned back to Jeremiah, trying desperately to avoid the conversation topic. She wasn't going to think about it. she wasn't.
"I'm gonna hold you to that accessory, alright? But I need you to come back to me if you find anything. I'm... I'm gonna go home and try to get some sleep." Or some work done, but Jeremiah didn't need to know that. She was going to stop this. Fix this.
"Text me, alright?"
