Ree tried to relax as he drove one of Mara's personal cars through the town with her permission for once. Her grudgingly given permission, tacked on with about a thousand threats and multiple ways in which she was going to string his feathers with his own entrails if he crashed it.

He barely glanced at his passenger the whole way, knowing where he was going though on his frequent fly bys or actual drives with his motorcycle. Once he parked he let out his breath and looked over at Kae. " Do you like Fusion food? " motioning with his hand toward the restaurant they were park across the street from. It didn't have a huge amount of people but was still busy with softer live music being played inside. If she didn't he had a few more good places he had tried that should be open by now.

Kae had been fairly quiet the whole ride, leaned back in the seat with her arms crossed, staring out the window as they made their way to wherever it was Ree had chosen for them to eat. She hadnt worn anything different and didn't bother disguising herself, it didn't much matter to her. She hadnt exactly been seen in decades, so she doubted anyone would notice and make a big deal. As they arrived, he asked if it was okay. She shrugged apathetically, "I haven't been out to eat with anyone since I left the academy in some 20 years ago... I usually just eat at home by myself. So I don't exactly know what kind of food that is, nor do I really care. It's just food, I guess." she seemed bothered by something, pausing to sigh, "Yeah, it's fine with me. Thank you, Ree," she seemed to correct herself, becoming aware of her previous tone. She got out of the car and stared at the sign for the restaurant, thinking for a brief moment before looking to Ree. She said nothing, unable to find words to explain her feelings about the whole matter, she returned her gaze to the building and made her ways toward it.

Ree watched her both as she blunty stated her views then when she corrected herself. Preferring the bluntness only because it gave him ideas on what to order for them both, as for the apathy and reluctance he could sense he had no clue. Getting out of the car, he locked it and meet her gaze for a moment before she headed toward the restaurant.

He let out a soft sigh and followed not quite sure if he was bringing up bad memories of the last time she went out ..20 years? ...or if it was something else altogether. At this point treating her like Mara might be good, he could even splurge a little too now that his other job would be needing assistants after hitting their next phased. Maybe that will lighten her mood? Maybe? Or make it worse in which case......foooddd yummy food.

"Fusion is a combination of different traditional cuisine styles to make something new. Such as a spring roll having smoked salmon, crab meat lettuce and avocado, instead of the normal shrimp, mint, lettuce and soy sprouts. " he explained as they reached the entrance, garnering quite a few glances which he ignore. Doing a quick visual sweep of the area before moving inside with a smile. "Just two " slightly disappointed that he didn't see any of of the people he was used to, he know that one of them at least got out around this time oh well.

Looking back at Kae he motioned her to go ahead as he followed behind.

Kae quirked an eyebrow inquisitively at Ree. "...what?.." she seemed confused by the notion. Did she hear him right? Of course she did. But why? She wanted to question further about the type of food it was, but then again comparing it to the bland cooking she made for herself when she wasn't too busy and made pre-made dinners, it would probably do her some good to at least try it.

"It sounds like you are into some pretty interesting foods." she said blandly as she thought for a moment, almost reminiscing on something from the past as she then moved to follow the hostess to their table. Kae sat down and looked over to Ree. She ran her fingers along the edge of the menu and the opened it to inspect what they had to offer. It was all fairly foreign to her, what wasn't unfamiliar to her, had ingredient combinations that were alien and some even baffling. She stared blankly at the menu before sighing. Kae was realizing how different they were, as Ree seemed more new age in ideas as Kae was still stuck in the old world of things. The drastic contrast between them as stark as her and... She snapped her attention back to the menu, realizing that she had been staring solemnly at Ree. She took another two or three more scans over the menu before just picking something at random to order. She had the feeling it didn't really matter what she picked, nothing would be simple. Which, after some thought, she decided not to care. She did say it was just food.

"I like to taste different foods from different places. The problem is when you find something you really like it's hard not to keep asking for it each time you come" he chuckled sitting down across her as he took a menu after thanking the hostess as he glanced down at it trying to figure out if he should pick something new or stay with something he already knew. Glancing up he blinked in confusion noticing that Kae was staring at him seriously. Was it a mistake bringing her here? Or was her not believing he could eat in a place like this. He looked back at her with a bit of confusion and worry as she looked back at the menu. Or .....she had no idea what to pick..20 years? That was about three times his age. He relaxed and reached out to tap the top of her menu playfully.

"Since you said you haven't been out for a long time... I was thinking we could order their buffet style ....plate ..things " he didn't think there was even a name but to him it was like a mini buffet, so he shrugged apologetically, feathers rustling behind him.

"Pick out the foods that you like or are curious about. Make sure to ask for spicy or not if you don't like it. I'll pick out three other plates. Once they bring them we can take samples from each one until your full. I'll bring back the rest for Tri and Mara " he looked back at her questioningly, in a good mood now that he thought he figured it out and now focused on trying to get her relax as well.

Kae nodded slowly, her narrowed analyzing eyes locked on him as he explained how he liked to try new things. He seemed so ambitious. Nostalgia and heartbreak working in tandem within her to cause her to exhale a little harder.

His suggestion for a buffet style meal actually sounded fairly enticing as it would in fact allow her to try a bunch of things. Experiment with flavors, something that was more her speed of things, a smile almost gracing her lips. "That sounds good, actually." she retorted, nodding a bit. Things were a little awkward, but she couldn't tell if it's because she'd never really spent any time around Mara's adoptees, especially Ree, or if it was because of the memories that Ree seemed to stir up in her mind. Or it was probably because she wasn't the biggest social butterfly and spent majority of her time alone, locked up in her laboratory as if she had acquaintances that could disturb her. She was in a bit of deep thought but closed her eyes and set the menu flat on the table. "So what else do you do in your free time?" she opened with a bit of small talk, at least attempting to be less introverted.

Ree watched her curiously as she seemed to blank out for moments at a time for no reason. Yet it looked the she did think the buffet idea a good one. He mentally picked one of his favorite plates that Mara and Tri also liked, then one of Tri's and one of Mara's more frequent ones. They actually had tastes in the opposite of the end of spectrum of nearly bland and firey hot.

"Hm... I am sometimes an intern with one of the SIU research teams " assumptions of being actually bring part of the SIU even allowed this ..which haven't been questioned yet. "Read, taking lessons from Tri and Mara ..other wise I like to travel. Of course to the more meta inclined cities mostly " he smiled, not going to tell her he had snuck though some of the others because he was curious.

Watching Kae keep her eyes closed he sent out a bit of healing energy trying to see if she was in physical pain for some reason. " How about you? What is bothering you? " he asked carefully, his smile fading to concern.

"Hmm.." she hummed lightly in thought as she analyzed his reply. Travel. She could relate to that. Just wanted to leave and go see what she could. She then hesitated as he asked what was bothering her. Was it really that obvious that she had been to distracted by her thoughts of the past that it had shown through. She was unsure, maybe she should just avoid the topic. Avoid talking about her. It had already been years, what would a few more years of silence on the matter hurt. She watched his face fall into one of concern.

She closed her eyes and sighed, then a smile surfaced on her face. She began to chuckle lightly. "It's almost scary how much you act like her..." she commented off-handedly. Opening her eyes, they were a bit softer now. "You just really remind me of someone from my past, and I suppose it's gotten me a little more preoccupied than usual, sorry." it was a straight forward statement as her smile was beginning to fade. "In my free time, I experiment. I make inventions, and I test the boundaries of science itself to create new things every time. Other than that, I will have to admit that I live an extremely boring life, especially since my sister disappeared as well right before I made my own leave from the academy."

Ree looked confused for a moment as he thought Kae was comparing him to Mara. He did not act anything like her or at least he thought?

As Kae smiled and spoke of this person he reminded her of she looked...happy. It was not so as she moved to what she did in her spare time and mention of her sister didn't illicit the same response. Hmm, was she doing the research because of what happened to that person? She obviously wasn't happy right now...or maybe she was and was just tired of it. 20 years is long without a break ....assuming she never took one.

"Who was that person? " he asked curiously, wondering in what way they were alike but not asking that directly. He glanced up as the waitress came for them and he motioned to the plates he picked before letting Kae decide the others.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 10:06 pm

Kae paused, averting her eyes slightly in thought of the question. The waitress came and Kae selected some things that she felt wouldn't be too out there. After the waitress left, she sat silently, debating whether to talk about it. Was now a good time? Was here a good place? She closed her eyes, trying to figure out what it was she was even going to say. Taking a deep breath, she looked at Ree as though she were tired. "My daughter, Alice." she answered simply, then narrowed her eyes slightly, a hint of pain but mostly loneliness. "You just.. remind me so much of her." She glanced around as though trying to dance around the topic, but then settled her eyes on Ree once more, almost like she accepted this inevitability. "I suppose that's why I felt compelled to help Mara. The way she speaks of the two of you... it reflects myself.. You and Tri are so much like-... " her voice trailed off and she drummed her fingers on the table, agitated at the surface of her own feelings. She sighed and picked up the butter knife and twirled it around her fingers idly, focusing her eyes there now as she spoke, resting her chin in her other hand as she leaned on the table slightly. "I went through a lot.. maybe I hoped to remedy my own self-loathing by preventing the same pain upon Mara." she narrowed her eyes further, a glint of anger. "What am I even saying.." she whispered, gripping the knife tightly for a moment before relaxing and returning to twirling it around her fingers. "I don't know what it is I'm doing, I just continue moving forward and hope for the best, I suppose." she stopped the knife into her palm once more and flickered her vision to him. "Sorry... I didn't expect to talk this much about myself... "

It was not hard to imagine that butter knife being a sharpen blade the way she was handling it with ease. He followed it with his eyes for a moment trying not to reach out and catch it before focusing up at her.

So they reminded her of her children? And he reminded her specifically of Alice? He knew her story or as much of it as Tri could share with him, Alice and Raziel... one "supposedly" killed the other in Aldas but had that been before or after Kae had disappeared? That he couldn't remember ....he actually never thought of her when he heard the reports and wonder if he shouldn't have. Maybe this was the reason she was helping Mara when it made no sense for her to do so.

"It is no problem. I did ask " he smiled faintly before moving on to something she had said " Self-lothing? " he asked very quietly "from what I heard there...was almost nothing that could have be done? " he said carefully as 20 years finally snapped into place ..20 years since Alice died..20 years since the School closed down ..and reopened.

"..hmmm.." she hummed lightly then leaned back a bit, her face going back to stern as though she shoved her emotions back down to be dealt with later, if at all. She waved a hand at his questioning her self-loathing. "I'm the kind of person that always blames myself for what happens. In fact, it's quite impressive how I can attribute everything to being my fault." she spoke bluntly then sighed, closing eyes. "There was a lot I could have done. First thing,... I could have been there. I could have tried harder to fix him. Then maybe he wouldn't have always been so angry with her. I could have tried to stop him.. protect her..." she opened her eyes, no more emotion could pull through as she stared with a slightly blank thoughtfulness at Ree. "It's been a long time, but I just kept moving, never stopping to realize the weight of what happened. I was a coward and hid. Maybe that's where Rasiel gets it from." she looked to the side for a moment. "Anyways, that was 20 years ago...."

Ree leaned forward slightly, looking more attentive but saying nothing until she was done. He didn't know he opened Pandora's box with that question, listening to ideas and views of herself that she had obviously thought over until arriving to that conclusions. Knowing herself, her weaknesses but not sure how to move forwards past what happened 20 years ago but still moving forward in a different way while dragging all that behind. He had ..no idea either.

"You can't change people easily. Powers aside, memories, events, genetics.." He raised his hand slightly to gesture while looking a bit sheepish. "They make up their personalities and views...the best that could be done is to try and convince them to be or act differently while still being themselves. Or there could also be other underlying causes.." He lowered his hand and paused. " I really can't say much but ...I don't think you should blame yourself over what someone else did..unless you told them to do it. You probably thought about it so I'm saying anything new, other than telling you someone else believes that view as well " he looked away a bit as well. "You could talk to Mara about that if you want.. She lost someone years ago in one of the renegade attacks. It is also part of the reason she pushed so hard to be where she is now ...." Hoping there might be more in common between them and that Mara could help.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 10, 2016 6:22 pm

Kae absorbed the information, his words, his thoughts, his views. More and more he just reminded her of the daughter she had lost. She exhaled a bit shakily as she tried to keep her emotions in check, forcing her feelings down as hard as she could as they pushed back with everything she bottled up over the last 30+ years. "It's surprisingly easily to change people. I mean, at their base they are who they are. But your experiences make who you are when you get older. Maybe I feel like if I had tried to be a better mother to him instead of viewing him like some kind of test subject, he would have had better experiences." she paused, realizing the insinuation of what she had said. "Rasiel was always different, and I studied him often as a child, but as he grew, he also grew in my heart. He is my son. That I will not deny, and in fact defend. But maybe I had not always been so nice. To him or to Alice." she sighed. "There was a time I had hoped there was a way I could save him even now, but I'm sure that's not possible with all that's happened." Kae straightened herself in the chair and then rested her elbows on the table, interlacing her hands and placing them delicately in front of her mouth as she stared from just above them to Ree. She seemed curious about what Ree said about Mara, trying to hide a faint smile behind her hands. "Maybe Mara and I have far more in common than I had originally anticipated..." she commented, then adjusted her glasses and rested her hands back down.

Ree nodded quietly in agreement, he had been speaking of the time when the attack occurred but seems Kae had been speaking of even further back than that as being the problem between her and Rasiel and what eventually lead to that time. He nodded quietly, only a hint of discomfort because ...Kae must be aware that they were also tasked in finding Rasiel...and he wouldn't have the same option as Andy....Andy wouldn't have had the same option either other than it was a test which they had expected Kage to fail.

"Huh. Tri mentioned you both talked before on the phone a lot...none of it ever went past work related subjects? " he relaxed grasping at the change of subject and moving the conversation on to Kae and Mara's working relationship.
