Jessie didn’t know who else to turn to… she had exhausted all her other options and now found herself standing in front of the public library. It wasn’t so much as the books contained within but the person who worked there that she was hoping to find. Anthony Darrow was the only librarian who would understand her question and might actually be able to help her. Because of the esoteric nature of her request she mounted the steps and entered the hallowed halls of literary works shortly before closing.
Respectful of the quiet that permeated the stacks she approached the circulation desk silently. The library was her haven, and her home away from home. No matter how much she loved her own store and apartment sometimes it was nice to escape to the endless seeming rows of books that the library had. Space was always an issue in her little world of words but here… here they had so much more room for countless more books. It reminded her of Pompeii’s library but on a slightly larger scale. In fact it was Pompeii’s library that brought her to see Tony in the first place. From one Bibliophile to another she could only hope he would be able to help.

Tony was at the front counter, as he often was, working with the customers and finishing up an inquiry. The student looked frustrated, but that might have been because Tony managed to find the books they needed, and now they actually had a large project ahead of them that they could no longer put off. It was one of the many reactions Tony had gotten used to seeing while working here, and over the many years he had learned not to take such things personally. They were not mad at him, after all: they were just students that did not like to do homework.
Anyway, school was always stressful, and projects not least of all.
When Jessie entered, Tony turned at the sound of the door, as he tried to do whenever someone walked in and he was available, so he could greet them. He waved and was about to deliver his standard greeting, but the look on her face made him pause for a split second and look slightly concerned. Everyone coming into the library recently looked very stressed, and he could not blame them. It made him glad he had escaped the strain of school a long time ago. Not that his current life, as a librarian or as a knight, was stress free, but still. At least he wasn’t getting graded on it.
“Hello! Are you alright?”

Jessie smiled at Tony. It seemed like the place was busy regardless of the late hour. “I’m fine Tony, a bit confused and frustrated, but overall fine.” She came closer to the desk and after a moment of situating her thoughts she elaborated. “I’ve been trying to work on a…” She paused and contemplated her choice of words. There were too many civilians around for her to just blurt out what she really needed help with and yet if she didn’t the more experienced Knight would have no clue what she would like help with. “Well I guess it is best to call it a translation expedition. I’ve finally been able to get a library in order and yet find that I don’t have the proper material to translate the scrolls.”
The library on Pompeii were centuries old and no book Jessie had been able to locate had been much help, not even a book on Ancient Greek. “I was hoping after closing I could pick your brain since I’ve spent weeks looking for the appropriate books to act as a translator. I even spent a few fruitless days on code cracking incase they were in code but it didn’t help. And Aralias is a major d**k who wouldn’t know what help was if it smacked him in his face.” Her frustration became evident shortly after the first sentence as her volume rose slightly. Her ancestor really was a royal toad in the sense that all he ever suggested is she spend time in the library but since she couldn’t read a damn thing in the ancient haven of literature his suggestion had almost as much merit as his body had substance… basicly none. But the books called to her and Jessie wasn’t willing to give up just yet. Not by a long shot.

Tony listened to her as she explained her problems to him. He could assume what she meant, versed enough in trying to talk about powered up life with possible civilians hanging around. Or worse, civilians that might belong to the Chaos side of things. The last thing he wanted to do was say something that gave him or someone else away while a Negaverse soldier working on a school project happened to be sitting within earshot.
That was one of the biggest concerns about the war: one never knew where their ‘enemies’ were, with the shared ability between them all to hide their civilian identities.
“Ah, well, things are settling down here, so I’ll be able to clear this place out soon. Just the last stragglers picking up their books, or clinging to the last few minutes of free internet that they can get.” He chuckled. There was an automated closing message that played on a timer every night, and usually once that started, folks cleared out without a fuss. Oddly, the library was not the place most wanted to linger in after hours.
He was all too happy to help her, and once the library was empty and the doors were locked, he looked at her and smiled. He had not been lying, there had only been a couple of people left to chase away, and they put up no fight. The place was theirs now.
“So, let’s see if we can’t figure out something that might help you. This is at your Wonder, I imagine?”

Jessie watched as the last of the civilians left the closed library before sighing in relief. She would be able to speak openly now. “Yes. Pompeii has this wonderful library full of scrolls and bound books, I swear Tony there might even be a copy of the Dead Sea Scroll’s stored in the shelves. My ancestor keeps bugging me to clean the library every time I visit and I spend at least some of my time doing so but it just has so much in it…” She smiled, “and its all fragile as eggs as well.”
Her smile fades as she remembers the last bittersweet hours she spent carefully dusting the various manuscripts and artifacts. “Its just so painful to open one of these books from so long ago and not be able to read it. I’ve studied Ancient Greek and most of the works I’ve found barely nod in the direction of Greek. And its not as if I could bring a scroll back with me to have a historian look at it.” She had been tempted to return with one of the brick-a-brack that she had also found on the shelves but restrained herself. How could she explain having a ancient carving of horse, or a gold bangle… That one was strange since it was one of the first signs of jewelry that she had found in the city, not that Jessie had really explored every house and every room. She had barely seen many of the public places in Pompeii, let alone the individual homes that populated the city.

Clean a library? She had certainly come to the right man. If there was one thing Tony, and Camelot of course, knew, it was a library. This was where he had found himself, after his reckless youth, and where he had started his second chance at a good life. This was where he had grown up and where he had learned more about himself than any other place, save only when he became a Knight.
He nodded his head, thinking it sounded like a rather engaging and interesting project. But that was the fault of this place, and how long he had spent working with books. He loved them, the care of them, sorting them. Even if he did not read as much as someone might think.
He still loved books.
“I’m sure it must be very difficult, and I’m not sure how easily we’ll be able to decipher something, but there must be some way to approach it. We’ll see if we have anything here that might aid us, since, as you said, bringing something back from there is not going to work. Ah, I must say, I would really like to see this library of yours. It sounds remarkable, and I feel as though you may be being led to more answers than you know. You say your ancestor insists you clean it, right? I wonder if you should focus on that first.”

“Two heads are better than one as they said” Jessie shrugged. She had exhausted every avenue of information she knew of but maybe in the bowels of this library was the book to unlock the secrets of Pompeii. “Oh, um…” Only one other person had stepped foot in the Wonder other than her and that was by accident. She was unsure how to go about doing such a feat on purpose, however Tony was offering to help and since he did ask, and it would balance out the scales of him helping, Jessie nodded. “Sure. We can go now if you want. Pompeii seems to be on a completely different time schedule then us so don’t worry about being gone too long.”
Jessie thought back to the few times she actually tried to calculate the actual time difference but she could never get it quite right. Either Pompeii’s days were much faster than theirs or much, much slower. It always felt like a long time spent in the wonder but when she returned little time had actually passed. Ahh the magic of being a Knight. She still didn’t have her new squire powers down right. “I’ve actually squirreled away some simple cleaning supplies as well as a few other things. The city is actually pretty intact but it feels wrong to ransack some of the homes for the things I need since it always feels as if the owners would be walking through the door at any moment.” She rubbed the goosebumps that ran up her arms and smiled sheepishly. She figured most other wonders gave the same vibe, not that she had been to any other wonders.

Tony nodded his head, imaging the place. He took a breath, finding he was eager to go and look at this library, and this place. Pompeii had, after all, been frozen in time when it was destroyed, and that idea was fairly fascinating. And what those books could hold, as far as information on the knight Pompeii, and their experiences… it sounded full of potential and interest, and he was very excited, despite himself.
He was a bit of a dork, when it came to that sort of thing.
“Well, if you wanted to go, I’m rather excited to see it! It seems strange, crossing the streams, so to speak. Going to a library as Camelot, when I run one as Tony,” he laughed, but he was all too happy to do it. It was like telling a kid they could go to Disneyland, and he could not help the excited look in his eyes and the smile that kept tugging at his lips.
He powered up first, his aura enough to mask hers when she powered up, at least. It would be difficult for anyone nearby to focus on anything other than his, anyway. He was a Templar, after all, and he unfortunately had no way of hiding it.
“I’ll take you to Camelot one day, in return, how does that sound?” He smiled, though he had not yet found the library in the castle at Camelot, if there was one. Maybe they could go and look for it.

Jessie had no problem going, it was quite amusing to see someone else as excited about the library as she felt the first few times she explored the building. She didn’t quite get the reference to crossing the streams but wondered if it was a pop culture thing, Jessie was more of a book quoter then tv quotes. One of her part time employees is trying to fix that but its slow going since there is always another book calling her name rather than a movie or a show.
Jessie powered up right after Tony did. She hadn’t realised that he had grown in power… then again she was pretty out of the loop there for a while as she tried to become accustomed to her own upgrade. Her squire’s aura was like a candle to his roaring fire now and the power boost brought its own problems. She pulled the gray shawl around her shoulders and mentally shook her thoughts away. With a smile, she nodded. “That would be pretty neat. I wonder if it is like how its been portrayed in the books like Le Morte d'Arthur.” She took a steadying breath and gave a quick warning, “The last time someone came with me he was a hitchhiker so I’m not sure how a deliberate passenger will throw things off.” She had been practicing her meditation, along with Tai Chi, so once the older knight gave the signal she would sink into a calm state so she could call out to Pompeii. Then in between one heartbeat and the next they would find themselves on Saturn.

Camelot smiled to see her power up to a Squire, always glad to see the younger knights growing and progressing through the ranks, growing stronger and, hopefully, learning more as they did so. He wished he could be there for all of them, every step of the way, but that was impossible. He did, however, open himself up as much as he could, and if they did need him, they knew where to find him or how to contact him. He was always glad when someone took him up on that offer, and he did his damned best to help them when they asked.
Which was what he was going to do now.
“You know, I spent so much time collecting Arthurian books, reading and imagining this place, I was very surprised when I actually went to Camelot and saw the lands for the first time. I would say that it takes what someone can imagine about it and amplifies it ten fold at least.”
The wistful look on his face easily confirmed his honest opinion of his Wonder. He was not being bias or proud, but just thinking about how much he actually loved the place and imagining how beautiful it was. He was looking forward to seeing new land, though, and going to Pompeii promised to be a very interesting adventure in and of itself. Going to other planets was always a treat for him, as he was an Earth knight: his space experience was limited, comparatively.
“You’ll be alright, just go to your wonder as you always do. I’ll just hold on to you, and we’ll both be taken there. It should not be any different than your usual trips.” He put his hand lightly on her arm, giving her a reassuring nod and an indication that she could go when she was ready. Despite his experience, the way they travelled always took him by surprise, and he was taken aback when they appeared on Saturn, looking around with wide eyes. “Oh! Look at this place! This is Pompeii, then? Fantastic!”

Pompeii knew exactly what Camelot ment, she felt the same way after reading up on her wonder and finally visiting it for the first time. It was completely different than what she thought it would be like and yet so very much the same. And so with the nod, a moment of centering herself, and then they were there… Pompeii.
Like every time she visited her wonder she landed on the great seal in the main hall but unlike the last time she dragged someone with her the hall was clear of dust and dirt. The marble gleamed and the mosaics glimmered on the walls. Every lantern suspended from the ceiling was lit and daylight spilled from the high windows to mingle with the glow from the lights. It had taken a while to get the hall clean but it was worth it.
“At least this one has pants on,” the voice came out of no where like it always does and when Pompeii glanced around she spotted the spectral vision that was her ancestor. “Go away Aralias, we are going to check out the library some more.” She turned away from the mean spirited….. spirit, and headed outside. The sunlight lit the courtyard and the city began to sprawl from there. Pompeii had walked off so fast that she missed the nod of pride her ancestor gave her before fading away to watch over his desolate city invisibly once more.

That was a disconcerting thing to hear. He looked around when he heard the voice, though he had learned through much experience not to panic when strange things happened. He looked over at the ghost and cleared his throat, though he found he could not simply ignore the comment Aralias made. He looked at Pompeii in surprise, clearing his throat and waiting for the awkward moment to pass and for the ghost to vanish.
“You brought someone here who was not wearing pants?”
How was he supposed to just ignore that? He could not help the flare of worry that hit him, like a protective father learning his daughter was old enough to be interested in boys. The things kids these days did at their Wonders! He was trying not to jump to conclusions, but ever since finding out his son was a Senshi, it was harder for him to keep his head when he got worked up like this. He had to trust that these younger knights were making the right decisions, and conducting themselves safely.
He was going to go crazy with worry, otherwise.
Camelot followed after Pompeii, though, looking around in wonder and smiling at how very different this place was to Camelot. It was beautiful, and he could hardly take it all in. The mosaics were beautiful and he wanted to pause and look at them all, but since they were here for a purpose he would wait until they were at least at the library before he got lost in examining things.

Pompeii hurried around the building and only paused to answer Camelot’s question, “He was wearing a kilt and some leather straps on his torso.” She thought a moment or two before adding, “I really do wonder if Luxor wears the kilt traditionally or not… did ancient Egyptians even call it a kilt? Did they wear anything under it?” The uniforms of the knights were interesting to her. Shang’s get up didn’t really give the idea of peace and tranquility that the mythology books say Shangri-La was like, not that she had ever gone to Shagri-La. Her own uniform wasn’t very greek either…. and she really wished she could find a portrait of Aralias in it. Just to see the the five foot nothing man in the lacy, frilly bodice and heals that she was currently wearing would be worth almost as much as all the gold in Fort Knox.
Pompeii began to walk again, the library was on the other side of the knight’s Residence but she had yet to figure out how to get from the entrance hall to the business side of the city. The side where the city meetings were held, laws were passed, sentences were carried out, and the Prytaneum. But the day was warm and nice and since the knight’s residence didn’t have buildings build right up against it the walk was a rather short one. Pleasant as well since each street that stretched out from the surrounding haven of the Residence was lined with homes and shops, there were small courtyards full of flowers and trees. The buildings intact as if the people just left for the day and will return any moment, it was this emptiness that gave Pompeii the creeps. She knew what happened to the Earthian Pompeii but had no clue what had occurred in this city.
Her musings were interrupted when she turned the final corner and entered the business side courtyard where the Prytaneum, or sacred fire pit, stood. The flame could be seen clearly through the ruins of the building that surrounded it. It was the only building that she had found so far to show such destruction. She had spent a whole day cleaning the area but the steps leading into the open sided building were still scared with whatever had occurred, the roof still had holes in it, and there were piles of debris stacked to one side of the platform since Pompeii did not know what to do with them. Turning away from the building Pompeii faced the unassuming library, it looked like the other buildings facing the Prytaneum, but inside it was stack upon stack scrolls and rows of books. All in a language she couldn't read.

Camelot looked around as Pompeii lead the way, shaking his head and taking in the sights. It was fascinating to him, and he marveled in how very different this place was to his own wonder, Camelot. He could not help but think about the lives that were lead here, the knights that came from this place, the ones he might have known when he was another person, years and years ago. Of course, that was a worrisome idea, as he knew now that the knight he was had not always been a good man, and spent most of his youth assassinating others. He lived by a code, but it was not the one Camelot knew now.
Hoping Talfrid had never been here for a nefarious purpose like that, Camelot tried to clear his mind of those worries and focus on the interesting, on the discoveries at hand. He took as many mental notes as he could, absorbing what he could so he would not forget this place any time soon.
Some times it seemed like too much to remember, but he knew images like this were not likely to leave his subconscious any time soon.
When they approached the library, after passing the rubble, Camelot’s eyes widened considerably. He could not help it. Though he lived day after day in a library, he just had a natural affinity for them. It was as much a part of his life as being a knight was now, and he could not separate that aspect of himself from his knight life, even if he wanted to. Which, really, would be easier some times. Leaving the civilian worries at home, and just focusing on knight things when powered, and the other way around when powered down.
But he had learned a long time ago that all parts of his life were tied together, and they always would be. There was no drawing lines in the side: on decision while powered could drastically impact life at home. Making the wrong choice as a civilian could circle back to him while powered. So he was always a librarian, whether he was wearing tweed or armor.
“This place is incredible!” He said, following behind her and doing his best not to run ahead like a kid let loose in a candy store. “I can see why you’re intimidated by all this work. It’s a mess in here!” He was the only one, he imagined, who saw giant stacks of books and complete disorder as a fun thing, but he always had enjoyed organizing. Not that he would do too much: he understood that this was a task meant for Pompeii, just from what he had heard and what she told him. She was being guided, and it was his job to help, but not hinder, her progress.

Pompeii smiled at his surprise at the library. It had given her quite a bit of pleasure the first time she spent time in the library, it wasn't until she got frustrated that the awe of the ancient place wore off. She blushed at Camelot's comment about the places messiness, "the most I've done is a bit of dusting and swept the floor of this main chamber so I didn't trail it everywhere. I can't put anything in any type of order because I don't know what they say." She stepped over and gingerly rested her fingers on the ancient wood, still feeling that shiver of awe that this place had stood against time and contained the knowledge of the past. Information that the present day might very well have lost to the ravages of reality.
She pulled herself mentally out of her thoughts and turned back towards Camelot. "You're welcome to look around, there are three more rooms besides this one. One straight back and two on either side of that one." She pointed back towards the back of the room where a archway was just visible through the shelves, "be careful of the dust since it makes the floors a bit slick. I'll be right back with the cleaning stuff." She headed back outside, her heels clicking on the polished tile. She wouldn't take long since everything was stored in a room right next to the library but it might take more than one trip.
