Kyle was probably going to have his a** handed back to him and regret offering to spar with Matt out at the training grounds to help kill some time before the Moon Intermediate was due for his shift later. But the Sun wanted it anyway. He had always wondered where he stood skills wise with respect to Matt, who was not only an Intermediate but also one of those who had been around for a while - about 3 years give and take. Regardless of how this turned out in the end, he reckoned that he was bound to get something out of it at least.
"So... do we just go at each other like what happens during a real fight or take turns parrying each other's blows?" He had seen other hunters going about it either way but figured that he would check with Matt first if he had any preference since this also happened to be his first time actually going about this.

Matt grinned hiding his concerned over the question the other hunter had asked, it was cute in the way he asked but part of it deeply worried him. It showed a lack of experience, a lot of lacking experience of fighting and sparring in general. Three years and Matt knew he couldn’t call himself an expert but he knew enough and had practiced enough to stand enough ground. The thought of letting Kyle run out in the field without him was looking dismal at best. “For sparring we take turns for the most part, but don’t hold yourself back. If there is an opening go, being overly polite and cautious during will only help you lose in the long run. “ Pulling the necklace off from around his neck he summoned his weapon, a butterfly edge spear. {Seriously. This is a waste of time Matt.}

"Ok." Kyle lifted his right hand across his chest to touch the cross necklace that was around his neck, summoning his weapon which manifested as two palm-sized shurikens. Transferring one of them to his other gloved hand, blue grey eyes stared almost at the purplish blue butterfly edge spear that Matt now held in his hands. A spear - that was going to be challenging to get in close without risking taking any hits to himself.
"The wards... you've never heard of them failing before right?" With a quick flick of his wrists, he tossed the shurikens towards Matt's shields as if to quickly test and prove that the wards would hold regardless of how rough this was going to get eventually.

As soon as Kyle summoned his weapon Kasi broke out in a high pitch laugh, one that was far too long for Matt to enjoy comfortably as he watched the other. {Look at it, it's so tiny ahaha. Oh ahahaha he is going to die ahaha. }Shaking his head as if trying to put her out of his mind entirely Matt gave the other hunter a faint smile. “If you lose your shield you will die if the enemy continues to attack. If you sustain too much damage you can die, but other than losing my shield entirely due to power being drained I haven't seen the wards not work.” The shurikens gazed him nipping just some of shield as Matt twirled the spear in his effortlessly. Stepping forward he made a quick lunge towards the hunters head slipping past his ear before twisting his hand to bring it down with a heavy thwack on his shoulder and across his torso. Kyle felt his heart sink slightly at the shake of the head that Matt gave him. Was it disappointment at his apparent ignorance? Perhaps something that he did wrong? Maybe it was how ridiculously small Semaj was when his weapon manifested in his hands...
There was a snort in his mind at that. Finally. After weeks of ignoring him to the point that Kyle was beginning to suspect that his partner had either become mute or expired in the corner of his mind that the incubus had taken up residence in, Semaj was reacting to something. Hallelujah.
< So long as I'm big where it counts >
Right.
Looks like being belittled was a sore spot for Semaj's case since he apparently thinks that he is too big for his britch... He nipped the train of thought right there and then in the bud before it was completed in its entirety, Matt's imploring of him to make an effort to work things out with the incubus the morning after they met coming to his mind then. Perhaps he should really try to put aside his preconceived grievances towards Semaj if he was going to make this partnership work.
< Let's just see how you fare against a spear yes? >
He settled for in the end. There was a hum of agreement from the incubus and then nothing. It felt as if Semaj had retreated whence he came from to observe the situation and mull over the sudden change in the Sun hunter's attitude towards him. That was some sort of progress on his part that he should be happy about he supposed.
"Simply put, we are nothing without our shields then." He focused his attention back at Matt, looking thoughtful as he tried to recall what was taught back during the orientation session that he attended. "Other than runic bandages and some of our weapons' abilities, is there any other way through which we can hasten the shield's recovery? Like eating? Resting?"
Grasping the shurikens that had returned to his hands, he waited for Matt to make his move, muttering a curse to himself the moment he realised too late the advantage that the Moon hunter had with his speed and the range that the spear granted him. Wincing at the blow to his shoulder and torso that literally brought him down to his knees, he dropped his hands to the ground and pushed, scrambling back a few steps till he was once more a safe distance from Matt and Kasi. His shield had thankfully held up against that but damn was he going to feel the effects of that later on while having to wreck his brains in coming up with some way to counter that.

Matt didn’t hesitate as the bright blue eyes followed the figure quickly scrambling back as if to gain some distances from him and the weapon the hunter held in his hands. Kasi laughed in a rather know it all fashion, ignoring her he followed the younger hunter unwilling to give him any ground. Quick on following his heels, Matt gave him just long enough to pause for the younger hunter to stand before bringing the spear down low above his knee and swinging upwards across his chest again before pushing him back with the end of the spear. There was of course another eager giggle from Kasi at her amusement of how easy it had been already to weaken the younger hunter’s shield. Matt simply gave a bit of a disgruntled look, or something that could more or less be described as some sort of concerned mixed with disappointment as he shook his head again. “We are in danger without our shields yes, we no longer have quicker healing, strength, even more so you will no longer have a weapon in your hand and any other damage sustained after that are more or less permanent and you could in some possibility die.” Taking a defensive stance he watched him again his brows still knotted at the severe lack of experience the younger hunter had in fighting and knowledge of his own shield and weapon. At this rate how was he going to be able to trust leaving him on missions alone? Kasi only laughed again, something about why was she even worried about competing but he angrily shut her down again. “No, your shield needs time to heal, or more so your weapon does. Your shield comes from your weapon, from the little voice in your head, it’s why it’s good to at least establish a somewhat decent relationship with them. You don’t have to entirely like them but some sort of mutual understanding would help improve your skill.” Matt tried to smile at the young hunter but the look of concern was still obvious. {In which he could do with a lot of improvement.}{Yep, shame, good thing you didn’t get his weapon. I won’t let you die like that.”}HP: 50 Damage: 12 Charge: 2/3

There was something that was a mix between surprise, horror and despair reflected in Kyle's eyes at the realisation that Matt was going to keep coming at him without giving him time to recover and rethink his strategy. It was exactly what the enemy would do during an actual combat situation and hence a good learning experience for the inexperienced Sun. Only that Kyle wasn't taking it that way with how overwhelmed he was feeling at the moment after the punishment he and his shields had taken not once but twice in a row.
"... you could in some possibility die."
The younger hunter lost his balance easily when pushed back by Matt's spear, stumbling back a few steps, arms flailing as he went back down and landed hard on his butt. Looking up and seeing the look that Matt was giving him, he frowned. Don't look at me like that. I know the consequences when we get sent out there on a mission. I know I need to work on this and I will. Just give me some time. Please. Don't give up on me. He wanted to tell him all that but couldn't.
His heart was heavy in his chest as he got up and braced himself for what was to come next.

It had hurt some, to see the look of horror and fear in the younger hunter’s eyes as he continued his attacks. There was also the familiarity, knowing that when he had first arrived, Matt had the same look the first time he had been thrown into battle. Inexperienced holding a spear his hand flailing around and unsure of what to even do. It had made him curse how little practice had done, how little interest he had started in being any good at fighting, he was a medic why did he need to fight? He had been a fool and the scars to prove it. Looming above, Matt watched him frowning as the Sun braced himself for what was coming next almost as if he had given into his fate. Bringing the spear up Matt jabbed it forward, aiming straight at the center of the Sun’s chest and holding it there pressing down. “You need to get on you feet, and if you can’t you need to be prepared to attack no matter what. Don’t just sit there and wait.” Pulling the spear away Matt took a few steps back giving him room to get back up on his feet again and to take a moment’s breath. < He's right. Staying on the ground like a duck is only going to get you killed. Get up. It's not over yet. >
Easy for you to say from the cozy corner of my mind that you now reside in. Kyle wanted to shoot back bitterly to Semaj, his gaze averting from the frown that Matt was giving him. Some fine example of a hunter from the Sun division he was being here. Matt was with the Moon division which was supposed to specialise in defence and support yet here he was kicking his butt without so much as breaking a sweat. Maybe he wasn't cut out for this after all. Maybe he should save everyone the trouble of having to deal with him as a failure and end it all by grabbing onto Matt's spear and running it through his heart.
It would be so easy.
Before he could follow through with that though, Matt had already pulled his spear away and backed up a few steps to give him some breathing space. Too late. It was already too late. Matt had seen enough of how bad he was at this that he was going to go easy on him now. He was probably thinking that he should just stop wasting his time with him, end it all and just move on.
Without bothering to summon his weapon or stop to think first on how he should tackle a spear wielder like Matt, Kyle drew his fists up to his chest and blindly charged head on, throwing out his punches at the older hunter with all the strength that he could muster at this point.

The moon smirked, it was a faint smirk but it was some sort of approval as the younger sun got back up on his feet and threw a few punches at him without any sort of organized thinking. They hurt and were rather sloppy in nature in how they were delivered, but they were at least sure to leave a few slight marks until later when Kasi finished healed him. It was the best effort Kyle had put forth so far, and at least better than his attempt at throwing his weapons at him as he had done so previously. Kasi on the other hand had merely laughed at his attempt, floundering was the word she had put it, floundering like a novice who had a spark of fury. Grabbing a hold of his shirt, Matt curled his fingers around and pulled him in close enough that he could press a cheek against and speak softly into his ear. “Better.” Pushing him away, Matt let go of him as a sound of crackling noise could be heard while the runes on his spear began to glow with a bright blue. Kasi was laughing maniacally into his head as he gave the charge a brief moment to complete before lunging towards the sun. Jabbing the spear forward he aimed again, straight for the middle of the younger man’s chest as blue lightning danced around around the blades. It was going to hurt, it was going to hurt a lot and Matt knew it and he felt sorry for what he had to do to him. HP: 44 Damage: 14 (sorry puppy so so so so sorry) Charge: 0/3 - using charge

Again Kyle knew that his own inexperience was betraying him when his heart skipped a few beats and his cheeks warmed over at the single word of approval that was whispered into his ear by Matt. A sneaky move to distract him perhaps from the charged attack that swiftly followed. First he heard the crackling sound of electricity, then he saw the glowing blue runes on the spear that was jabbed at his mid-chest.
There was absolutely no way he was going to dodge that so the Sun took a deep breath and braced himself for what was going to follow. Unable to hold up against the rapid succession of blows from the more experienced Moon Intermediate, he watched in horror how his shield strained against the crackling electricity for the entirety of two seconds before it splintered, resulting in the tip of the spear coming through until it eventually pierced the flesh on his chest and his entire world exploded in pain with his screams.
