Whatever it was that lurked in the shadows, it had blue eyes. Not the kind of beautiful blue like ice crystals or precious gems, but like it had cataracts over their eyes, clouding the color and blurring the definition. They stared at Noctua through the penetrating darkness of her bedroom and froze her in place. she listened to it's nails click on the hard wood of her floor, tracking it's movements from there. Whatever it was gagged her with shadows, bound her with her sheets, and covered her eyes with a gnarled, bony, jaundiced hand. She felt the dirty nails digging into her temples as it pressed her head back into the pillow. She;d learned a long time ago that fighting made it worse, but when her head began to pound witht he pressure, threatening to crack under the weight of the hand that kept her down, she pressed back. The shadows and sheets tightened in response and putrid breath assaulted her nostrils.
The rest of Gisela's body woke up to the midnight alarm that she set for instances like this. She jolted upright with a cry of terror, searching her room for whatever had attacked her. Of course she saw nothing, but she wasn't exactly excited to stay in her room. So she grabbed her yoga mat and the pen that saved her on night like this and headed for the park.
Gisela was an easy target at night, but Noctua was less so.
Powered up and calmer now, Noctua spread her yoga mat and moved through her poses. Sequences of Marjaryasana and Bitilasana over and over to loosen her knotted back. Back into Adho Mukha Svanasana for a base as she moved into Virabhadrasana sequence. Things that she knew like the back of her hand. Things that happened to her body without her mind needing to think about anything. She let her thoughts be like clouds, allowing them to float by with no consequence. The thing with blue eyes lingered in the back of her mind, but did not cause her harm. Which was as good as anything, it would seem.

Night was a dangerous time in the city. Twisted monsters stalked in the shadows while more human seeming ones smiled sweetly and pulled stars from chests in secluded corners. Most of the 'normal' people here had learned to shun the streets after the sun fell, but there were some who found freedom in the darkness. Darkness was a cloak that hid the gleam of scales and the curve of horns up from black hair. It let someone walk freely who would have found no place here in the light of day without the cover of magic.
Cinnabar loved the city at night for these reasons, though there was still a small, secret part of her heart that missed the sunlight the way other people got to enjoy it. The park didn't look the same at night, for instance, missing the noise of birdsong and children laughing on the playground. It was empty and almost eerily quiet as the general slipped between the hanging swings, lost in a moment of nostalgia before a signature pinged on her inner radar.
It wasn't an order signature, which was lucky for them and she was half grateful for. She wouldn't have to be hunting down any prey just yet, but it was worth investigating. Besides herself, there was no one else here, and save for musing on a past that one could never get back, what else was there to come here for?
Her chains rattled as Cinnabar slipped away from the equipment and further into the more open, grassy areas, her red black eyes sweeping. She found the person she was looking for without much searching, doing something she only vaguely recognized in the peace and silence. The general watched her for a moment, remembering the unkept fuku and the long, dread-locked hair from an earlier meeting. It had been a few months since she'd last seen this corrupt, but it had been an intriguing experience, and now there were questions floating around her head.
Cin waited until she moved between forms before she spoke, stepping forward with a loose stride, her hands in her pockets.
"Noctua." She greeted her, pulling the name out of her memory. "Bit late for yoga in the park, isn't it?"

As Noctua bent and twisted, she could feel someone approaching. There was a tingling up and down her spine which alerted her to one of her kind... her kind... She didn't move. Instead she counted her breaths, counted the spasms in her muscles as she held her poses, relished int he relief when she released them. It was only when Cinnabar spoke that she gave any notice that she had felt any signals at all. She untangled and turned to face the agent who found her. "You look different," she said simply, crossing her legs to sit comfortably. She did look different. A coat for one. Horns as well. Be beyond that, she felt different. Stronger. More fierce. Like something animal had taken over her body. The tingle that had been running up and down Noctua's spine since she first noticed another agent of chaos exploded into a spider web of electricity. She felt the shocks down to her cuticles and further. Noctua felt herself falling in love with the force that her acquaintance had become. A few seconds passed before Noctua noticed that she had been asked a question. Normally, she would ignore the inquiry, figuring on her interrogator giving up after a few repetitions, but this seemed different. The animal thing inside of Cinnabar called to her, pulling the answer from her throat. "I don't sleep much."

The comment drew a smile, crinkling the corners of her red eyes with their black surrounds. Her tail flicked as she tilted her head, drawing her hands from her pockets to spread them.
"I got a promotion. And I ate the youma that was in my head." It was a simplified explanation for what had happened, but she liked the theatrics of it, the way it sounded. A finger lifted to tap her temple and she flashed her fangs. "Its all quiet up here now, but I got to keep the body with some upgrades."
By this point, it was fairly obvious to the half-youma that Noctua was... different. It wasn't surprising then, to hear she was an insomniac. The yoga became more understandable, if she was using it as a way to calm her mind. Wasn't that usually the problem insomniacs complained of? Not being able to turn off their mind? At the least, it could wear a body out to make sleep possible... though Cinnabar herself preferred something more active.
"Is that what the yoga is for? Helping you sleep? It would not be my first choice, but I understand some people swear by it." The General tucked her hands into her pockets again as she paced around the mat, her eyes turned outwards as her tail swung lazily behind her. Stretching her senses discovered nothing of particular interest... it was the corrupt's luck that no one seemed to have caught a whiff of her yet and come to investigate.
Would it be overbearing, to offer to stand watch? Would it be intrusive? Maybe, but there was still that nagging sense of duty to watch out for the lower ranks, the weaker members of the group she was a part of. She remembered how hot headed, and hard headed, she had been once. Someone thinking they were strong enough to take care of themselves shouldn't be a surprise.
"Why do you do it out here while powered? You'd be safer at home, or a gym. From white moon soldiers anyway."

How did Noctua begin to explain the things that seethed within her room? The yoga didn't so much quiet her mind as it did distract her from whatever it was that haunted her. But, perhaps, it wsa easier to let Cinnabar think that insomnia was all that plagued Noctua for the moment. Sleep paralysis was a tricky thing, and explaining it was trickier still. No matter how Noctua tried to explain it, she ended up sounding powerless. So she shrugged and moved into child's pose to wake her body back up for the next sequence. "I have yet to see anyone from the other side," she said as she pressed her forehead to the mat. "And if I do... we'll I'll cross that bridge when I get to it." As Cinnabar circled, Noctua kept her senses on her. It was a simple enough task, the one thing that Noctua knew how to do. She knew how to feel for her own kind and others, though other took no interest in her. Even her own kind largely ignored her. "But I want to talk less about my habits and more about what happened to you." Up into down dog and then over into plank. "Youma and promotions. All I've done so far is power up and and do this." Back into down dog and then up into forward fold. "It sounds like there is a story there that needs to be told."

The general made a none committal sound, accepting the brush off about Noctua's safety. It wasn't surprising and it was unlikely that nagging at her was going to do anything positive. Why bother?
Eyes turned outwards, she stopped and relaxed, a tilt of her head acknowledging the topic change. She smirked a little as she did it, her tail idly sweeping from side to side.
"You should be filling a quota, you know. Lieutenants have a duty to bring in a certain amount of energy for Metallia on a regular basis. If you keep it up, at some point someone is going to do something about it, and you definitely won't like it much. Its easier to just do it." She chuckled.
"My story... its a bit more mundane than what turned me into this in the first place. That was a failure... this was a reward." She said as she let one knee bend, her weight resting on the other, half turning so she didn't have her back to the lieutenant she was talking to.
"It came to my attention that the Negaverse has lost a lot of agents lately to purification, and since finding and reclaiming people was a job I held as a human, I thought this would be the perfect way to put my skills to use. I organized an operation to set up surveillance on a few defected officers and when the time was right, we swooped in and captured him. I was rewarded with a promotion for my hard work."
Red eyes went a bit unfocused then, thinking about what had happened then. She remembered the feel of the hand in her chest keenly, the flow of rich, chaotic energy... and the world had dissolved around her.
"General Queen Laurelite put her hand into my chest and pushed her energy into me. The youma I was sharing this body with saw a chance at freedom, and went for it, trying to steal the energy from me... but I had beat it once already, I wasn't going to lose to it a second time. I'm stronger than that..." She blinked, shaking herself out of her thoughts. "I beat it back and ate it, or lack of a better term. Swallowed it completely and took full control of this body. Its hard to say if it was that or the new energy that gave me the horns and the eyes and scales... but here I am. Whole and strong."
She shrugged, her face pulling into a smile.
"Like I said, not as flashy as being eaten alive by a youma. I owe all of this, really, to the General Queen."

Noctua sat in full pigeon, listening to Cinnabar's story. She worked hard to keep the wonder off of her face as she pictured the struggle between woman and beast. So that was a primal and visceral call that Noctua felt to Cinnabar. She was highly ranked yes, powerful in her own right, but also in possession and control of an even more powerful monster within her flesh. Noctua felt her breaths come in short bursts and she tried to convince herself that it was the pranayama pulling at her muscles and not the adrenaline rushing through her veins at the thought of something so... animal. She released her foot and leaned forward, hiding her blushing face in a blanket of braids. The grass did a little to cool the heat of her cheeks, but even with her dark skin and the cover of night, she didn't trust that the color wasn't apparent. Instead, muffled by earth, she laughed. "Generals... Youma... when the creature in the alley gave me a purpose they never said that it would be so complicated. A pen and a name. They said that would be all that I needed. All that was necessary to complete the task set down for my by the stars themselves. Looks like there's more to it than that..." She lifted her torso and unfolded, readying to collapse into a mirror of her previous pose, this time on the other side. "What did they tell you when you were taken?"

"I don't know about any tasks from the stars... The only voice I hear is Metallia's, deep in my gut." Cinnabar replied, her tail idly swinging. "Those who come from the stars are the invaders, the ones who aren't supposed to be here. Metallia is the only being that matters, and in turn, her General Sovereigns and Generals, Captains and Lieutenants and the corrupted, who've seen the truth and come to the right side."
Movement caught her attention and she watched for a moment as the girl change poses. The smooth working of the body set her mind drifting and she wondered how old Noctua was. It had been hard to tell, with Lellouche.
The question called her back and Cinnabar tilted her head curiously.
"When I was recruited, in the beginning?" A broad, toothy smile split her face. "The day I was recruited, General Painite found me, walking out of the police station. She challenged me to a fight, and she won, knocking me to the ground. And there on my back in the snow, she gave me a choice. Join her, or die."
"I suppose I'm lucky she saw potential in me, enough to give me the choice. Just like the General-Queen saw it when the youma ate me. Metallia is not a gentle queen... she doesn't tolerate weakness, but she rewards strength, dedication, conviction. She is fighting a war and that demands certain sacrifices. You're strong too, you know... or you wouldn't have been given the power you have."

So Cinnabar had been given a choice? Well, Noctua supposed it hadn't really been a choice, had it? Join or die didn't give much room for decision. Perhaps, in that way, they were not so different. She would have to talk to others of her kind and find out if anyone was given a choice. But that was for another time. Now was the time for Yoga in the park with her fascinating new companion. She moved back down into corpse pose, her arms bent like the branches of a cactus to relax her muscles after the stretching. "I don't know what leads you to think that I'm strong. I run away from shadows." It was the closest to a confession that Noctua had ever came, and she braced herself for the wash of shame to come crashing down over her like it did every morning she spent wide and terrifyingly awake. But it didn't come. She laid on her back and waited and waited but instead she took a breath and looked over to Cinnabar. "But thank you."

A bright, deep-chested laugh broke from Cinnabar and she turned to face the corrupt, looking down at her. Sweeping her coat out of the way, she braced her hands on her scaled hips, her lips pulled back in her smile to show off her fangs.
"Sweetheart, there are things in shadows that would eat you alive! If you haven't discovered that yet, trust me, you will. Even our officers have something to fear from them..." She shook her head and her hair danced down the sides of her face, threading into the fur around her neck. "You'll get better, I think. You're one of the shadows now, and you know what's inside of them. You'll learn how to control your fears and beat them. I think you have that potential. I can even help, if you want me to."
Impulsively, she reached out then, offering a clawed hand down to the corrupt on the ground.
"I can show you how to make the shadows your home and be one of the things people fear about the dark... and you'll never need to run away again. Strength is all you need... and that'll come with time."
Maybe she was waxing philosophical, but it was a truth she felt deep in her bones. People feared the dark because they didn't know what was in it. She knew. She was one of the things. It took away the fear for her and instead, she reveled in the strength it gave her, to make others fear her. Noctua could learn to do that too.

A teacher... something that had never been offered to her before... something she didn't know how to accept. As she lay before Cinnabar, she considered her options. She could trust this woman... monster... hybrid and go with her where ever she led. Noctua had to admit that was tempting. But she also had to be aware that this creature before her, however aluring, was the things her nightmares were made from. With the power that she sensed rolling off of her... Noctua ventured to guess that she could turn Noctua to a pile of nothing if she wished. Noctua had to know that she could trust this strangers. She rolled to her knees and stared up, trying to find the next words to say. She stared up wordlessly, hands demurley on her knees as she knelt helplessly before Cinnabar. How did she phrase her eleation and hesitation? What words could possibly convery her mixture of emotion. She had to try. She could not let this moment slip by her. Nor could she risk offending Cinnabar to end up alone or worse. "How do I know," she venturely slowly, "that I can trust you?"

Still the girl was hesitant. Cinnabar couldn't say she blamed her, all things considered. The Negaverse was not puppies and rainbows, and she was literally a monster. But Noctua hadn't fled, and that was a brave thing.
Stooping, the half-youma lowered herself to a knee and she tapped the center of her chest, just above the swells of her breasts contained by her bodysuit. She watched the other and came to a quick, perhaps impulsive, decision. If she was going to be teaching, she might as well start now. A free sample, as it were.
"I'll show you something right now, as a gesture of good will of sorts. Put your fingers here." She didn't wait for the other to comply and reached out to take her wrist, tugging the thin arm close till the dark fingers touched her skin. "Focus on your hand, and think of a dark void inside of my chest, just below it. We have the ability to reach into another place... you experienced it when the General Sovereign gave you your power. Its one of our greatest skills, because in that place is the source of our power. Its called a Starseed. Every person has one."
She pressed the hand a little harder against her breastbone.
"Imagine flesh and bone going insubstantial, like mist... and push your hand through it. You're going to touch mine. It will be my show of trust, and a lesson for you."

Suddenly, Noctua was touching Cinnabar. She wasn't totally certain how that happened, but here she was. As Cinnabar spoke, she felt her voice reverberating against her fingertips. The instructions were clear but... at the same time... they weren't. Starseeds? Another place? It all seemed so impossible. Then again... Noctua's life had been growing increasingly impossible. She had been awakened into a brave, new, terrifying world by a stranger who had touched something deep within her and filled it with what they had called chaos. She could summon magic and wield it with relative ease. Why couldn't this also be true? Noctua furrowed her brow and focused on the single point beneath her fingertips. A dark void... like a shell. She just had to convince herself that Cinnabar's flesh was an illusion. For a few seconds, her fingers lingered there, against Cinnabar's flesh, and she considered giving up. Maybe this was only for those of great power and Cinnabar was setting her up to fail. Maybe this was a cruel joke, and she was going to be hurt again. No. Noctua had to trust. She didn't have a choice. Not if she wanted to survive. Cinnabar's flesh gave, just a bit. Not even an inch. She glanced up at Cinnabar and pressed her fingers further, not certain what to expect once her hand was through. It felt... odd. Like when Noctua stuck hr hand out and the air was full of fog. She wasn't touching anything, but her hand felt surrounded by something. Further and further she pushed her fingers until her whole hand was lost within Cinnabar's chest. And then she found it. Something cool, and sharp, and solid connected with her fingers, sending electric shocks all the way up her arm, causing her to jolt back and draw her hand back to her own chest. After a moment to gather herself, Noctua nodded. "Alright. Teach me."

It definitely wasn't a comfortable thing, having someone's hand in your chest. It was probably stupid, making this lesson one for a new recruit and even more so to have it done on yourself, but watching her reason through it, and then trust enough to try it...
There was reward in the success and the way the surprise moved across the girl's face. Cinnabar grunted as pain lanced through her body, her muscles going tense as her pupils flashed to slits. Noctua's hand slid wrist deep and she felt fingers come into contact with her starseed. It was familiar, from promotions and the one time that b*****d back-stabbed her... She bore it all with a steely resolve not to move, even as her head spun from the invasion.
Or maybe it was the way she was holding her breath, because the moment Noctua jerked her hand free, Cin let out a great, gasping breath, panting as the pain began to fade. A smirk curled her lips as agreement came swiftly and she let her hand fall broad and heavy on the prominent shoulder.
"Good job. You did really well." She said as she pushed herself to her feet. Her knees felt wobbly, but she forced them steady with steely determination. "Come on. There is still more to see tonight. That was the just the first of the many things I can teach you."
She offered her hand again this time, far more confident in her reception.

Whimsical Blue I'm going to wrap this one with this post, sound okay? As though in a trance, Noctua placed her hand in that of the woman before her. Her heart soared at the praise, and her mind went into overdrive trying to find out how and when she could earn it again. This woman had allowed Noctua inside of her, invited her to touch the deepest, darkest shard of her being. Her starseed. She didn't know exactly what that was, but from the jolt of power that lad left her arm numb, Noctua knew that, whatever it was, it was it was the most important thing Cinnabar had to her name. And the most important thing Noctua had to her. It dawned on her that if it was that simple for Noctua to touch Cinnabar's starseed, it would take nothing for Cinnabar to touch hers. Could she remove her starseed? What would happen? Cinnabar seemed in pain when Noctua felt inside of her, and while that did spark something regretful within her, above all Noctua was curious. What would happen if you did remove a starseed? What did that do? Where did they come from? So many questions filtered into Noctua's mind, but above the din of confusion and it's harmony of alarm, there was one shining truth. She would follow Cinnabar to the destruction of the earth.
