╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗ ×x W I N G Sx×xx torn and mangled barely held the lone Alpha aloft on the currents of wind just above the Rift. Dreznir had spent two weeks forcing himself to use his broken wings, gritting his fangs through the pain of bone grinding against bone and dirt getting into open, bloody wounds in his membranes. Panting, the multi-hued male flicked his slitted turquoise gaze beneath him as his wings threatened to give out.
Just keep me aloft long enough to take down a small deer. Just a nibble, juuust a bite, and then we'll let ourselves rest. Ah, the royal 'We'. A titch of insanity creeping up on him, perhaps? He'd even taken to talking to himself, having arguments and muttering curses. Drez suppressed a giggle. Oh, I'm going batshit. Well, he supposed that's what happened when you found yourself suddenly without a Pack after three years of being all social. Served him right, didn't it? See what happens when you try to help? You get a bit over-eager, start manipulating wolves just to see what they do, then you go out on a hunt and cause a Blood Feud between the mated Alphas... Drez quirked a grin as he spied a lone, skinny and probably parasitic elk staggering near the edge of the Shattered Rift.
He banked left, wings threatening to buckle, and tucked them tightly to his flanks, pointing his nose downwards. He shot through the air, the wind screaming in his ears, the horn on his mask cutting the skies before him to make his passage easier, quicker, faster. Dreznir opened his wings with a snap right before he collided with the ground, coming up behind the elk with talons and fangs bared. He landed on top of the beast, claws sinking deep into shoulder and haunch, and he slipped his fangs into the elk's neck. Feeling his teeth lock behind the cervical vertebra, the male bit down with an audible crunch, breaking the wretched creature's neck.
But the damned thing stumbled and tripped over its stupid feet, sending the pair careening to the left -- right over the edge of the Rift. Yelping in panicked surprise, Dreznir tried to disengage himself from the carcass, but gravity was bearing down hard on him. He forced his wings open and reached out with his front paws, talons scrabbling for purpose against the sheer walls of the Rift's mouth. His claws sank into a crack on a single, small lip, and the Alpha was jerked painfully to a stop, sending fiery lances of agony through his legs and shoulders. Groaning, the male heaved himself up, back paws kicking against the vertical cliff to propel himself upwards onto the small outcropping.
Sides rising and falling rapidly, Dreznir's eyes flicked up towards the top of the Rift. I'm only six feet down, I should be able to make that...Righy? He glanced behind him. Any mistake, a miscalculation, a single error, and he'd be dead. The male gulped. Well. That sounds about right. Drez flexed his wings, hoping to use them to kind of just...hop on up there. But the fall had injured them even further, and if he extended them and a breeze came frolicking by, he'd be send a**-over-end right into the hungry, gaping, abysmal maw of the Shattered Rift. "...Maybe we should just wait here a moment." He lifted his nose to the wind and inhaled deeply; he smelled another Vileclaw out there, somewhere.

-------ZAICE-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beta of the Riftclaw Pack
The large cliffs of the Shattered Rift proved excellent for ambushing prey from above. While he didn't have wings like some members of the pack he had left--forced to leave with great prejudice--, Zaice had learned a thing or two by watching the eagles. They soared on great wings, the currents keeping them aloft while they looked for something suitable and close to the edge to drag off...and fall to their death. A large meal for something so small, so agile, so fragile... Almost commendable. He had taken to this hunting method. It was difficult for a lone wolf to take down anything large. It was a worthy risk that had to be timed just right.
Crouched on a shadowed ledge that he had spent an hour scrambling up, he waited for anything to pass. Patience was something that happened to others, but he passed the time counting the rocks and watching how the shadows grew. Scents of other wolves hit his nose, but they were so far off... But one scent kind of lingered nearby. Something strong, yet frail. Maybe another outcast like himself? Would he really risk putting his own life at risk to take out something trespassing in his really bleak hunting grounds? No. That was too much. Instead he continued to wait.
A sick elk wandered nearby. Ahh...that was the sort of thing that would do just nicely. Sure, it wasn't choice, probably riddled with disgusting things, but rip out the infected parts and it was good eating. Though, he would have to wait just a bit more to make sure the leap down wouldn't send the prey tumbling to their death, along with himself.
Almost there...' he mused, a grin forming on his face. He could almost taste it. ' Just a little further, nom noms, ' he purred to himself as he adjusted his position to leap down and use the high ground to his advantage. ' Aand...Goottch...aaa ' Whaaat?' He barked and jumped back against the cliff as a form dove down at the inopportune time. He watched with morbid facination and mild annoyance.
But something struck him... that desperation, that certainty... Curiosity got to him. Zaice, drawing forward to the edge, looked over and winced as both the prey and the predatory fell over the edge. " Well, " he said to the air, " That's a bummer..." The sound of stone falling and echoing off the canyon's deep walls were all his ears could pick up. And yet... there was this scraping of claws and this whine. His head tilted now in full curiosity mode. This was something interesting. The air he sniffed, and then made his way down carefully to the larger ledge before the deep abyss.
Zaice heard a voice. So they had survived. Cautiously he moved to the edge, and looked down. There on the ledge was the beaten form of another wolf. He blinked his neon green eyes, tilted his head to the side...and found himself almost wanting to laugh. Well, he did laugh in an impish way. A c**k of the head, and Zaice laid down folding his paws neatly over one another as they hung off the edge. " Why... You seem to be quit stuck, friend." The word 'friend' hung in the air before he grinned once more. " An interesting approach. Pray, did you manage to get a bite? " Taunting...he realized that he was taunting. Almost instantly his ears fell back in internal chastising, he shouldn't do that to someone that was about to die, but it was kind of funny... As long as it wasn't him.
" Heh heh heh..." Zaice couldn't keep back the chuckles much longer and found himself howling with laughter. There went his dinner. Down the hole. Because of some winged fool.
Go figure.

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗ ×x T H Ex×xx sound of light footsteps reached the Alpha's ears, and he backed up, half of his hind paws hanging over the lip of the outcrop as he peered upwards, eyes narrowed against the setting sun. He saw two pale paws cross themselves rather primly before a cream and gold head peeked over the Rift's edge, a smile on the lupine's face. Bright green eyes shone with mirth as he took in Dreznir's predicament, and he made a few snide comments. ...This one's missing a few screws, isn't he? Thanks again, lady Luck.
Drez arched a brow, though it couldn't be seen beneath his mask. "I did, actually, and got a mouthful of worms for my troubles. Who knew an elk could have worms in their freaking spine?" His voice was lilting, a soft tenor, but something dark twined throughout his words. The Alpha extended his tongue and pawed at it comically, an answering yet wry smile on his mouth when he was done with the little show.
"And you? I imagine both of our dinners just went sailing over the edge here. What did you plan to do, anyway? Laugh it to death?" Drez tipped his head to the side. "Interesting technique, that." The Alpha let slip a sigh as he sat back on his haunches, gazing up at the young Beta. Perhaps I could barter or manipulate him into helping me the hell out of here? He flicked a glance behind him and suppressed a shudder. Don't really wanna spend the next fifteen minutes screaming and finding out of the Rift really is bottomless.
He returned his slitted eyes back to the colorful Beta. "Perhaps you'd be interested in a trade, of sorts? Help me out of here, and I'll help you take down something healthier and tastier than that disgusting lout we both tried for." He gave the male time to think it over, changing the subject. Subtlety, that was the key to any good offer.
"I'm Dreznir, ex-Beta of the Skyrent Pack. Out by Bleakburn." Dreznir flexed a wing, jolts of agony pounding through his shoulders from the cramped, awkward position he had to hold if he wanted to keep from tipping over. "I imagine you're an ex-something-or-another? Don't see many Claws wandering around Packless, unless they're young or stupid." The Alpha paused, biting off the end of his words. ...Well, damn. So what does that make me? Dreznir let out a chagrined laugh. "So. I guess that makes both of us a little odd, doesn't it?"

-------ZAICE-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beta of the Riftclaw Pack
"Heh..." he said one more time. He gazed down at the wolf below and took it in. Male, brightly colored, wings looked badly torn and damaged, and a mask. Oh delightful! And that slight edge in the voice showed that this one could be teased and taunted. Maybe teased enough they would just get so angry they would fall off and just...
Zaice shrugged, smirked again and rested his head on his paws while observing the pantomime. His grin grew more. Laugh a dying elk to death? What was he, a hyena? A most curious insult indeed. Though one quite pointed and barbed to stir up something. "Oh no. I was going to tell it knock knock jokes. Did you hear about the wolf that fell into the Shattered Rift? I heard the landslide was rocking." ... Even Zaice could admit that that had been a horrible one. And he could watch the cogs in the bright wolf's head spinning and twisting. ' Clever boy, giv me a bargain that is worth my time...' he mused to himself as he giggled at his own bad joke from before.
A trade? A trade!? A trade like that meant nothing in this desolace. Zaice knew that too well from the three or so years of wandering around here. His laughter ceased and he growled through his grin, "I'm listening..." He lied. He had ceased listening and heard nothing more than the blathering of a scared wolf stuck somewhere where they shouldn't be. This one was... trying to play him? Zaice's eyes went cold as a grin a bit more menacing formed. "Though, you are bargaining with air. What use would I have of a lame wolf? Bait?"
Zaice listened, his smile draining away as he observed just the state this other was in. This... Dreznir. An ear flicked and he looked closer. Bleakburn... Skyrent, huh? Ruthless wings from the sky... Young and stupid, huh? Zaice's grin appeared once more, "You could say that. Marrowbile, close to the lake in Bleakburn. I was their guardian." Something dark dripped from those words, a vile and penetrating hate and pain. And oddly, Zaice seemed to be still, calmly staring this wolf down. Once more did his ear flick at the words, and he snorted before getting up and walking away from the edge of the cliff...as though to leave the fool there.
He should leave him to die. One less wolf in the world around here would make his life easier. It would be the best. It would be the right thing. No one that pathetic deserves to live. He caught himself paces away from the cliff's edge and frowned, stopping to glance back. His own mind was spinning what had been said, of what hadn't been said, of what could be said. You didn't survive out in this land without learning to think about everything.
... Like it was easier to survive as a pair than just a lone.
Shaking that unpleasant thought from his head, Zaice padded to find what he had thought of moments ago. A vine. A strong vine. It grew in this terrible region, its tendrils strong enough to hold rock in place...and green enough it could be used as a makeshift rope for those harder to reach ideal ledges. It was easy to find. It was now a matter of getting the right...oh...Leverage.
Rocks were moved into place. Shuffling and dust, and the occasional pebble fell from the higher ledge as Zaice moved the rocks into position. An end wedge between rocks, his front paws he walked on the vine before nosing the rest of the long 'rope' down the cliff. His head peered down at the Alpha below. "Your interesting lies were interesting. Perhaps it would be easier for you to fool when you are not trying to fall off the edge, hrmm?" Zaice snickered, and lazily grinned down, "Bite and climb, keep wings tight. And don't chew through my vine, or you will die. " Lie...it was nontoxic and not at all dangerous to consume... Well, okay, it wasn't a lie. But the poor fool would die~ Death by falling, another rock on the roll~
This time he did giggle, backing along the vine until he was sure he was far enough away, and enough time had been had for the wolf to make their decision. Then, with care and strength, Zaice took the vine up and pulled backwards to aid the ascension. They could kill one another when they were on even ground. Maybe.

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗ ×x D R E Z N I Rx×xx offered a small grin, barely visible beneath his mask at the wolf's words. Pretty sure even bait is a bit too much for me right now. The lone Alpha shifted his weight, his haunches and shoulders beginning to cramp miserably. Who knew that the great and powerful Dreznir would be stuck atop a teeny tiny little precipice, depending on a lowly, half-insane Beta to help me out of this little predicament? Drez snorted, a wry, chagrined laugh chiming out of his chest.
"Well, I can't say that I'd do much good as bait right now. But I can tell you that with wings, hunting is quite a bit easier." Don't give it all away, now. Nice and sloooow. "We could employ various tactics, you're aware, I'm sure." Here, Dreznir's intellect made itself known. "I can cover miles upon miles in a matter of minutes, so I could scout for game. If I focus hard enough, I'm able to sort of...project my thoughts towards another, so I could let you know where our prey lies, or circle back to tell you." Dreznir's legs began to shake and he hissed in a breath, though his voice remained steady, cool, and calm. He was never one for panicking, and he almost always kept his head. "You could scare them, get them running, and I'd come in from above, dropping down on whichever is fattest and healthiest. Then it's only a matter of moments before we've ourselves a good four days worth of lovely, parasite-free food." That was only one of many tactics, but Drez wasn't used to hunting with unwinged wolves.
He supposed that his Pack was a type of special Breed of Varsythe, as he'd never come across another with his unique...looks outside of Skyrent. Turquoise eyes blinked as the Beta told him of his old Pack; Marrowbile. Sleek, strong wolves, but very, very strict, if he remembered right.
Dreznir's ear flicked at the Beta's words. Hah. A Guardian, as was I when I held his Rank. The Alpha had begun as a lowly Delta, working his way up to the highest-ranking Beta. Both Alphas had trusted him implicitly, and he was counted on, knew his place in the world. Until he made one minor, tiny mistake and got the Alpha's mate mad at him. Then, of course, he had to turn them against one another -- he was tired of being picked on -- and then someone died during a hunt...Even if it was my fault, I certainly didn't make them fall out of the thrice-damned sky. The Alpha frowned, pressing his ears flat to his skull as he tore his thoughts away from the too-recent past.
His hackles rose slightly at the venom dripping from the Beta's words; clearly, there was no love lost, there. Perhaps he could use that in the future. ...If I even have a future, that is. Drez didn't know why, but something about this Beta drew the Alpha to him. Perhaps it was his sardonic quips, or the pain of some betrayal he felt, echoing inside of Dreznir's own breast. Turquoise eyes met neon green, and something within the two wolves stretched and unlimbered, as if recognizing one another's anguish and rage. Drez tipped his head to the side as the male stared him down, clearly unafraid, answering the unspoken question. Clearly, he was hurt by those he trusted, too.
"...I understand." That was it: two words. But they held the weight of the world within themselves, as Dreznir and the as-yet-unnamed Beta held each other's gaze. Finally, the colorful Beta turned away, tail flicking out behind him over the lip of the Rift as he padded off. Dreznir snarled, but he wouldn't call out after the male, beg him to turn around, to come back and save his sorry tail. Whether it was pride or instinct, the Alpha kept his mouth shut and lowered his chin to his chest, a stray lock of his mane falling over his bad eye. Perhaps it's better this way. A few days of mindless dehydration, and I'll be folded into the Night's embrace. Won't be so bad after that. But Dreznir knew that his words had some effect on the Beta; he'd felt it, and his instincts never steered him wrong. Something within him had struck a chord in the other male, and Drez knew that every Claw, no matter how wary, always placed survival above mistrust.
The wolf rested his cheek against the sheer wall of the canyon, closing his slitted eyes. A half-healed laceration, angry red traveled down the eyelid of his right eye, disappearing beneath his mask. He blew out a gentle breath. Whether in this life or the next, I will destroy Skyrent for what they did to me, what they forced me to become. They'd ruined him. Physically, emotionally...Drez swore that he'd never again be part of a Pack, would never place his trust in another Vileclaw. Nor would the tears in his wings ever heal, or would full sight return to his eye. His lip rose in a half-snarl as rage broiled and tore at his guts. I'm not dying here.
His eyes snapped open and he bunched his haunches, getting ready to make a leap for it. But a pebble bounced down over the ledge and struck Dreznir on the snout, making him snort and glance upwards. The sound of claws against stone reached his ears, and puffs of dust were thrown up and out into the air. The male frowned. What is he doing? His question was soon answered as a green vine uncoiled down the length of the canyon wall. His eyes flashed in triumph and relief. Thank the Ancestors. Dreznir saw the Beta's head pop back over him, and he grinned unashamedly up at the male's words. "I imagine I could tell you a few more interesting ones, were you so inclined." Dreznir followed the Beta's instructions, taking hold of the vine between his teeth. He pressed his wings flat against his flanks and braced his front paws on the flat surface.
With a lunge and a flick of his head, the Alpha leaped upwards, using his momentum to press himself tighter against the canyon wall. Again, his teeth bit into the vine, and Dreznir made his way up the last few feet, talons digging into cracks in the hard stone to keep himself steady. The vine was pulled from the other end, and the Alpha's head peeked over the lip. With a grunt, the male slammed his front paws onto the ground, claws flexing and biting deep into the earth. He heaved his hindquarters up over the edge, wriggling his rear a bit as his back legs scrabbled for purchase on the wall. "Oh, I must look ridiculous," he whined as he fell flat onto his chest, panting heavily. After catching his breath, Dreznir rose to his feet and gave himself a good shake, dislodging dust and small chips of shale.
"Thank you." The multi-hued male sank into a graceful -- albeit rather painful bow -- paw out, wings fully extended, and chest pressing against the dirt. "That would've been a rather droll end, would it?" Drez offered the Beta a small grin at his own expense. As much as he hated to admit it, there was no way he would've made it out of there without the Beta's aid. And Drez was unspeakably glad that the male had decided to help him. For now, the pair shared a wary, uneasy truce. "See if I ever take a flying leap off of the Rift again. You have my gratitude, Guardian."

-------ZAICE-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beta of the Riftclaw Pack
No more than a snort came from the Beta when the great Alpha rose from the shadows of the Rift. He eyed the Alpha with the grateful pose, and quirked an eyebrow, such damage sustained had been quiet exposed. Zaice chuckled quietly, spitting vine from his mouth and with great gesture returned the pose. Minus the wing flaring of course. "Of course, though next time be a bit more graceful about it. Or at least take a fool with you down to the bottom of the Rift. " Still, there was something... Pain. Similar pain. And rage? Perhaps. Bottled nicely in a package. Useful? Maybe.
Zaice dropped the pose and sat back on his haunches, considering this possible ally/foe. He eyed the being from tail to nose, and decided then and there... Maybe, just maybe, this one wouldn't be stupid. "You blabbered about flight, and telepathic communication. A trait of your pack, or just a gift of a Herald?" Zaice was half thinking aloud and speaking to the wolf in front of him; though he knew this Dreznir was too tired to really reply too quickly. More words would be needed to fill the quiet space. All the while, Zaice's ears moved here and there, picking up the sounds along the Rift's great expanse. Falling rocks were a hazard from the creatures along the higher cliffs. "It would be stupid to try that again... Hmm... And especially in such condition. Terrestrial movement would be your best bet. No more flying...Not in this cavern."
Kindness..., Zaice mused to himself, will get me killed...' He got onto his paws and started walking lazily away from the larger edge of the cliffs to snake along a path made by the mountain sheep to higher grounds where it was safer to rest. Plus, caverns up there were safe from any airbourn predators that lurk in the sky...like other wolves that sway in the wind. "A storm on the wind. Water is not kind. Stones far too slippery. Besides... You owe me an Elk. "

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗ ×x A M U S E M E N Tx×xx shone in the Alpha's eyes at the male's words. Indeed, though I sincerely hope there won't be a next time. Dreznir sank down into a sitting position to mirror the Beta; he didn't want to be all grr-I'll-kill-you-for-not-submitting right now. More like I'm too lazy. Or too weak. Which irked him. Damn Skyrent for doing this to him. Drez turned his nose towards his old Pack's territory, eyes narrowing. I'll come say hello soon, old friends. I promise.
He tipped his head to the side, feeling a wave of exhaustion move over him. Damn, if he didn't want to just lay down right here and pass out for a good few days. Or weeks. He hadn't stopped moving since he'd gained consciousness, sure that Skyrent would be searching for him if they ever found out he had lived through what they'd done to him. Steel struck flint within his belly, sending a leaping fire to licking at his guts. I hate them. With everything I am, I will get my retribution, one way or another. He flicked an ear, realizing the Beta had been speaking to him.
"Ah, I'm not sure, actually. I've used it before I was a Herald, but only two others in my Pack had the ability." Dreznir shrugged, tucking his wings to his sides. "Agreed, I doubt I'll be taking wing for the next few days, at least." With a forlorn glance, he looked at the rips and tears in the membranes of his wings. They'd take at least another three weeks to heal to where he'd have decent maneuverability back. For now, he was limited to short hops, no more than a mile or two at a time. "Looks like I'm grounded, huh?" He gave his head a shake, quirking a wry smile.
The Beta started padding off, muttering something about a storm. Dreznir trotted forward until he was next to the male, tipping his nose skyward. "Smells a mile or two off, and strong. I know of a cavern at the foot of Khezid, if you felt inclined to weather the storm." The pair went at that ground-devouring lope that all wolves were known for, heading towards the mountain. He glanced over at the male. "I do owe you an Elk. Or three. Yet you've not given me your name yet, Beta. And I can't keep calling you 'Beta' or 'wolf'."

-------ZAICE-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beta of the Riftclaw Pack It was hilarious to see an Alpha in such a weak state. It would be all too easy to just boop their nose and watch them flail and fumble and fall right into the gaping chasm... Zaice considered this for a few moments, mentally going over what would probably happen and decided that even HE wasn't that cruel. Okay, maybe he was, but still... Jokes had limits. It was more funny around water anyways. More spluttering, splashing, flailing, and curses that one could actually hear.
Still, he could sense plotting from the cogs from this Dreznin. The stance, the shifty gaze, the subtle shifts in posture. Yeah, must be a bit sore still. Naturally, the fall would do that. Zaice, though, felt it was a bit more primal than that. "Keep your feet to the ground, and nose to the wind. Best way to find the tastiest kin.", Zaice recited almost automatically. Funny how annoying den rhymes come back at the oddest times.
"Hrngh?", Zaice glanced with his eyes to the one padding beside him. He got a better look at the Alpha... Yep. Beaten badly. "Khezid, or a storm in the flooding cayon... Why, I didn't know I would get to choose how I would die! What delight! What thrill! I wonder when we can ride the mammoth and pluck the hair from the crow's black bill! " Despite the random words, the Beta snorted and flicked a brightly colored ear in acknowledgement to the wise choice of the cave, and his approval of the good idea. He hadn't traveled that far around the mountain's just yet. It wasn't safe to go alone. "You're right though. Better than being wet. And who knows what the wind holds..."
A comfortable lope was had and Zaice fell in a little behind the leading Alpha, assuming that the damaged and battered, and injured fool knew where the heck he was going. It was a risk he was willing to take at this point. This one was interesting. He grinned, tongue lolling out in amusement to the claim of owing. Such an odd concept for Vileclaw... Yet, it worked quite well for them as a whole. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a right for a right, and a life for a life... "Zaice. " he said at last, mentally dismissing the idea of this being owing him anything more than just a part of a kill. "I also would answer to those. Though, it would be wiser to keep as such. Strange wolves can do strange things with a stranger's name... You should be wiser to keep yours guarded. Especially in the shadow of Khezid. " He cautioned, knowing the stories of the things that lay deep in the mountain.
They continued their journey, though not far to the cave Dreznin had said. And it was by good fortune that it was not already occupied. It was no more than a slice in the rock with a roof overhead, but it worked for their purpose and there was no sense of dread. He sniffed around before settling in, eyes blazing in the shadow of the cave, an almost glowing effect, boring into the darker corners for anything that could be, well, vile. He was present, oh yes, but his posture showed his mind was in two places at once. Somewhere in the past where the 'disagreement' had happened. "They weathered a storm instead of taking shelter, against our advice. She turned against me, blamed me when her pups washed away, killed the Sentinel, and I walked away. " He spoke quietly, his voice dropping to a hushed and ragefilled whisper; the cavers all but echoed it, amplifying the injustice that happened.
He peered back to the battered Alpha, considering their alliance. Too weak to seek justice--revenge was more like it-- against this slight to the very heart of the Pack. "We are even. I saved you, you found shelter. An Elk is just an elk. " he stated plainly then flopped onto the floor completely undignified before rolling around in the dust just because he could.
