Remembering the Past
Prompt 3

Can be used toward Solo or RP req

It has been seven long years since the Great Oban Invasion. It almost feels like a dream, considering all of the changes that have occurred in Tendaji since the great war. A new King sits on the Oban throne, and he has opened the boundaries of Oba and Matori. Many already are taking advantage of the open boarders to travel and explore. The world was expanding and changing all things to the massive war of the great nations.

Since the war, Tendaji took a stand against the extremist Alkidikes and won. They came together to show a new alliance that many could never dream of. Everything was settling, and now that there finally was peace everyone has begun to to take a moment and remember all that has come and gone.

How have the major wars and changes impacted your character these past few years? Are they bitter for their failures or happy about their success? Do they see a peaceful future to come or are they concerned about those who may be still holding grudges?

[Characters not part or even alive during the war can still respond to this prompt. Maybe they have a different way of understanding the war compared to those who were part of it, so feel free to explore those feelings and thoughts in your response]

Saraf, along with the unit that he was working with, had stopped out at an oasis where they made camp. Tents were set up, a fire pit started so that a simple meal of stew could be made over it, and after that everyone sat around chatting, enjoying the company of the other members of the unit. After a while he found himself laying on his sleeping bag, arms crossed behind his head, starring up at the stars. He could hear Grane grumbling behind him where he was staked out with the other mounts. He glanced in his direction for a moment, making sure that the best was behaving, before looking back toward the sky again. It was quite impressive, how well the beast tamer had done with him, getting him to go from a feral beast to a rather loyal mount. What the tamers were able to pull off really was something special, making him that much more impressed with Nuri.

Saraf had never been able to figure out such things himself and it had taken his all to even catch Grane. He doubted that he'd of been able to tame the beast to his hand in the same manner that his fellow soldier had done for him. No matter though, Grane had been tamed and he was working out very well for Saraf. It allowed him to move around faster, to work harder, and to better serve Oba. He rather enjoyed the freedom of movement that Grane offered making him wish that he'd chased down such a mount a lot earlier then he had. Of course as he thought about it he wondered if he'd of even been able to capture Grane before now. All the training in the desert had paid off and the culmination of that training was the battle against the janarim that had netted him Grane. Well, that and he'd been able to chase the pack of janarim deeper into the desert, away from town, saving both the citizen and the beasts themselves.

Saving people was a nice change of pace, one that he found himself enjoying. He'd fought in the war against the North, giving it his all, and despite his distaste over the situation he'd fought in Sauti as well. They were two very different battles, one in which he'd devoted his all to the cause and the second one that he'd fought in because the King order it to be so. A decision to fight versus being ordered to do so, the differences were great, but his loyalties to his people had him fighting just as hard despite both times regardless. He would fight just as hard in the future when something else came up which was certain that it would. Things couldn't remain in a perpetual state of peace forever after all, something was bound to happen, though what it might be was anyone's guess. He supposed that they wouldn't know until it happened and until then he would just have to prepare himself through training.

He had to admit that the transfer to this unit, one that was supposed to last a month but had been going on much longer. It wasn't as though he'd been forced to stay here, but instead he was still here by choice. The idea of going back to what he'd been doing in Sulburi before his 'incident' wasn't really something that he decided that he wanted. Instead he wanted to do what felt right for him, though he had to admit that he did miss his mother. She was the main reason that he'd been planning to return to his original unit, but that hadn't come to be. Instead he was still serving in the outside unit, still patrolling, still taking care of outside attacks from bandits and beasts alike.

Turning his head toward the rest of the unit, a few of which were still awake and chatting, which made him give a bit of a smile. They were worth his loyalty, meaning that he didn't feel that same urge to get this tour of duty done so that he could return home. After first leaving he had wanted to get back quickly, to return to his training, and to what he'd been doing before he was tossed out by that little upstart noble brat that had decided to pick a fight with him. Were it not for the fact that he'd insulted Saraf's mother he might almost thank him for the fight since it landed him with this particular unit. It was a good change of pace, one that freed him from people that weren't worth serving alongside. Where he was now was nice, not to mention welcoming.

There would always be those in the unit within Sulburi that thought themselves superior due to their breeding alone, meaning there would always be those who insulted him for his own. It was a pain in the backside and yet now, here, he felt more welcome. Those in this unit were all different then those in the unit he'd served in while in Sulburi. There were people that had started on the streets, some of them were criminals to start with, those who were from families like his that weren't of noble blood. They were all good men despite not being from the best families, it was something he found he enjoyed because he'd yet to find himself insulted nor had they taken shots at his mother. It was what he'd always wanted, people as loyal to him as he was loyal to Oba itself. The only downside was that serving in this unit wouldn't exactly help him to move up the food chain, would it? How would he become general from here was the question. Was that what he still wanted or did he wanted something else? Something more? Something that he could find among this unit?

Saraf allowed his eyes to close as he thought on those questions. He'd been on the same path forever, ever since he'd first joined the Oban army, and the idea of changing directions was a bit intimidating. He didn't want to seem as though he were a coward or anything, certain that some would take him staying here instead of returning home as just that. If he could make a something of himself here, to lend his strength to the routing of all the dangerous things that roamed the sands. It could be one way to go, though he'd definitely think hard on it hard before he made his move in any direction.
