Somewhere in the early hours of the morning, Algie's phone would buzz with texts. iloveyouDIE not missing anymore. then, a little while later still cold. and finally, before the detective went to sleep zac left.

Thankfully when Algie was in his 'not speaking' hours of the morning, he could text just fine. azuredreams saw your car was gone finally. where did he go? --- are you ok?

There was no response for a few hours, Jeremiah bundled up asleep in bed. On his stomach under a pile of blankets. He was cleared from work for a few days even if he had s**t that would need to be handled and blindly reached out for his phone to check texts. iloveyouDIE they had the boot off before i even finished giving my statement. considering requesting a formal apology for all the finger print dust.
not here. not his mother's. needed space. the next text came long after the others. i'll be fine.bullshit.

There was an audible ding from the chair by the bedroom window and then a snort, " Bullshit you're fine." Yes Jeremiah, while you were sleeping Algie decided to stop by and let himself in and take advantage of the peace and quiet to have a read.

Jeremiah had pulled the blankets back over himself, practically buried under them. He thought he imagined the dings until the third really settled into his half-awake mind. Then the snort. Then Algie's voice. He did not really move from the blankets, turning on his side toward Algie. His face was just barely visible under everything he piled on the bed, glowering sleepily. Jeremiah’s hand wiggled out again from under the blanket and flipped him a two-fingered salute. Texting he could do, rude gestures as well, but talking? He wasn't there yet. Also too early to be called on bullshit.

Algie knew better and for once didn't press the issue of waking up. He gave Jeremiah's shrouded head a glance over the top of his glasses but he didn't say anything else, and didn't move from reading. Jeremiah would find his way up eventually.

His hand was pulled back under the blankets, Jeremiah tugging them over his head and disappearing back underneath them. Between the chill to his back, the pain that it was causing, having to deal with a pile of administrative work, and Zac leaving ... No. He was not feeling particularly alright. Jeremiah, after a few heartbeats, pulled the blankets back some and looked towards Algie. "You can read just as easily over here as over there."

Alg could have said something about the natural light but just pursed his lips a bit and closed the book. It was brought with him when he moved to the bedside and sat on the edge. "How's your back..?"

Jeremiah shrugged the blankets down off his back, having not slept in anything but pajama bottoms and used all the covers as the way to keep him warm. The bandages were there, the skin red and irritated, but in a few places where it had healed it almost looked as if the skin had a chilled look to it. "Cold. Stiff." A sigh. "Still feels a bit like it's burning." He rubbed his cheek against his pillow, willing himself to wake up, and glancing over at Algie who sat at the edge. Really. The edge?

Yes, the edge. What did you really expect?"Let me check it.." The book was put aside and Algie toed his shoes off a moment before he turned and kneeled on the bed beside the other man. "Stay still." A warm pressed into Jeremiah's shoulder until he was sure the other wouldn't be moving around, and he leaned to check the bandages. Some of the wounds were healing up but the skin didn't look quite right, "I'll be honest. It looks horrific."

"Not moving," he muttered. Algie had always been warm, warmer than Jeremiah was, and with the injuries he was not expecting the stark difference. It made him suck in a breath, one that escaped as a sigh a moment later. He was still under Algie's hand, not moving and let out another huff. "From what I saw in the mirror, I don't doubt it." When the other man was done looking, leaning back, he was shifting to move and bring up his arm. It allowed him a moment to curl his fingers around Algie's wrist, fingers to his pulse, and then letting it go. "Don't suppose you'd help change bandages for me when I get up?" Except that he was really starting to wake up and realize that Algie was in his house. Before he had time to hide the sweaters on his chair. Goddamnit.

He's seen the sweaters. He's already been all through your s**t Jeremiah. All through your s**t."Mm hmm.." Alg confirmed with an agreeable hum, much too used to Jeremiah finding his pulse at any opportunity to really react to it. "Well there you go. You're hideous. Nothing to be done about it now." Green eyes peered over his lenses with teasing nonchalance.

Jeremiah would likely muster feeling affronted that Algie had been through his things except that he really did not care. It was just sometimes he did not like it if the other found something that was particularly telling of his affection. Not that it should really matter now but ... Sometimes he was defensive of just how long. "Whatever shall I do?" he sighed, burying his face into the pillows, he then tilted his head back to look at Algie out of the corner of his eye. "Suppose that means that dowry mother set up for me is more important now." What with all the thank you princess notes in Algie's books. Of course he'd make that joke.

"You know I bet if she came to visit she'd have this whole town figured out and arranged sensibly in a week with sheer force of will." Which may be closer to what was actually necessary, but no less true. "Don't move." Algie's broad palms pressed together and he started to rub them very quickly, very very quickly, and by the time he broke them apart and pressed them on either side of Jeremiah's wounds they were near burning hot. It was an old, but effective trick (usually best on cold hands).

Jeremiah snorted. "Absolutely. Where do you think I get it from?" He was just as determined and stubborn as his mother and that was usually where things got heated. Except that they had patched a lot of things up after his father's death. He went still at the don't move, not quite sure what to expect until he heard Algie pressing his palms together. The sensation of nearly too warm hands had him sinking into the bed with a low noise. It eased some of the chill, finding some momentary relief. "Alg," he said softly, " you are a gift." Not the first time he had said that and, not surprisingly, the first time he had said it with Algie's hands being on his back in some way. With Bob, his father, a chiropractor he had learned a handful of tricks. Jeremiah really was s**t looking after his physical health sometimes. He had gotten better in his old age but not much.
