The detective had apparently slept through the alarm, Algie getting up himself and showering, before he woke the other man up. The professor, in a way only he could bully Jeremiah, had ordered the other to the shower while he cooked something.

Then he would have a look at Jeremiah's injuries.

Luckily it turned out that he kept a change of clothing in his car, something Algie went and got for him, and when he finally walked into the kitchen - the table had an assortment of first aid supplies - he had a clean pair of slacks on. Jeremiah was rubbing the towel at his hair, letting it drop to his shoulders as he sat down in one of the chairs.

Not leaning back into it and not wearing a shirt (that illusive tattoo somewhat visible for a change). Not with his back needing to be looked at.

"Smells good," he commented, leaning forward and watching as Algie moved around the kitchen. Never mind the stomach rumble that echoed. Real food after a few days of other ashdown bland things? This might be heaven. Also his brain had not really, truly gotten back up to running speed yet.

There was nothing like a hot shower and a change of clothes after spending god-knows-how-much time in the rain and cold. Algie looked very near to be in pajamas in an undershirt and thick cardigan with loose pants. Tea was put on and food was scrounged and by the time Jeremiah rejoined him he had most of the salisbury steak and scalloped potatoes done. Nothing prepackaged of course, and he made the gravy himself, so he didn't want to hear it Jeremiah.

"Not sure what you were eating over there," The glasses were back on (if anything was to be made properly he needed to see) and he peered over them. Shirtless Jeremiah was only given a moment's pause before moving on. Really, they'd known each other how long? "Anything probably smells good."

He brought the kettle over for Jeremiah to fix himself tea while he put lids on the food and turned them down low. "Do you want a bag of peas for your face, or are you going to tough it out?"

Jeremiah knew he would have to leave, would have to go out into the world and find Zac and they would have to work out something. More than just talk to Zac but also what they would be doing in regards to the fact they had been missing.

There was just so much to be done. Otherwise be would have swiped some pajama bottoms and crashed for several more hours.

"I don't know if I should protest or not the implication that I would think anything smells good," he huffed, raking a hand through his hair before rubbing at his jaw. "... and it was bland. Everything there. Bland." Oddly enough, when he had gone to shave, his beard had been the same as it had been when Sunny had taken him. The detective left it to the questionable nature of other ashdown.

His hand fell away as Algie brought the kettle over and he leaned to fix himself a proper cuppa. The detective was starting to feel a bit ravenous with the smells of food and tea in the air. Even with what was left unspoken between them he did not even think twice about his state of attire. It wasn't like they hadn't seen everything at one point or another over the course of their lives.

"Ah," distracted by the precious, precious tea, "nothing for now. Later if the swelling gets any worse." It was mostly bruising, slight swelling, and a tender but not broken nose. The tea cup was held between both of his hands and he took a long, long drawn out sip. If manners would not rear their ugly head Jeremiah would have drank it all down in one gulp. Instead he was setting the cup down and looking up at Alg (there was only a small sip left, manners be damned). "My back is what I'm more concerned with." A snort. "... luckily I'm mostly just missing hair on my leg."

"After being in other ashdown you may even eat," he got a teasing expression, "restaurant food."

Algie left the stove and moved back to the other, grabbing bandages and burn cream before he walked behind Jeremiah and put a hand on the back of his head pushed it forward.

"It's not terrible. If it had been, you wouldn't have slept and we'd be in the emergency room." It was definitely warm to the touch and red but there weren't blisters so that was a good sign. His body was working against it. The fire had hardly been usual so he wondered if it was truly a cold burn as he'd felt, or a flame burn as it looked.

"How was the shower on it?" His hand stayed rested against the crook of Jeremiah's neck, a warm broad hand keeping the other's head bent and not letting him move much until he was finished.

Jeremiah, as usual, did not miss a beat and flipped him off at the mention of restaurant food. "More like I'm eating nothing but ridiculous things for the next week." Algie himself was more than a decent cook from the years of being around Jeremiah. Though sometimes they got into arguments about meat not needing to be in everything (and sometimes the same thing about potatoes).

The other man was one of the few that could lay a hand on him and expect the directions to be followed. Jeremiah head bowed and he let out a huff of breath.

"It doesn't feel right," he responded. "The shower actually felt like it was warming it up." The detective paused, hands rubbing along his thighs a moment (don't think about Algie's hands). The burns could have been worse, or perhaps they had healed some who knew, but they were along the taller man's spine. The skin red, irritated, and only in a few places did it look like it blistered or that skin was damaged. The layers he had worn of clothing had saved him somewhat.

He did not quite know how to explain that it felt as if there was a chill. Something he could not quite get rid off. Even the shower had only temporarily worked.

"It doesn't quite look right or feel right either-" Algie actually was leaning in and as he kept the man's head bowed with one hand, the other was lightly testing the good skin around the burn wounds. The redness and slight swelling was there, from the trauma and his body trying to make up for it, but the actual burned flesh wasn't quite normal. "Jeremiah I'm not exactly a doctor-"

There was a heavy sigh from him, not happy the other was this banged up and again knowing that it could have been him in his place.

"Please stop throwing yourself in front of things for me." Was finally said in a strangely passive (for Algie), worried murmur as his hands retracted and opened the burn cream. It wasn't like the burns were directly cause by defensive action, but over and over while in the forest Jeremiah had done it, moving in front of him, grabbing him, shifting him around. "It's really bloody demeaning if I'm to be frank."

Jeremiah hissed, hands squeezing his own thigh because Algie pushing and pulling at the skin hurt. It was enough to stop him from talking, to steal a few breaths from him. The detective let out a snort at not a doctor. No, Algie had always been a bit of a rough nurse.

He had been patched up often enough and -

- there it was.

This was an old problem. One that frequently lead to fights and Jeremiah getting his arse handed to him by the other man when he reminded him, quite forcefully, that he could take care of himself. If he was honest he knew better.

The injured man was quiet for a time, letting Algie apply some of the cream. His shoulders slumped slightly, more to do with the shift in mood than him leaning forward. Eyes were closed, counting breaths and telling himself that Algie was right.

"I know," quiet, "I'm sorry." His chest was tight again, much how it had been when they had landed on each other. At least until the situation had diffused and they had gone back to more comfortable places. Jeremiah shifted a little, another hiss of breath, and smoothed a hand across his face.

"You're more than capable, I just ..." am absolutely terrified of you dying and not being able to do a thing about it.

"You're always ******** sorry.." For all his spit and vinegar Algie came from a place where he actually gave a damn and he always seemed to be stuck cleaning up afterwards, whether it be improvised medical care or giving someone else a punch in the mouth for his friend, "But 30 years you havent learned your damn lesson."

The cream was dabbed onto the burns, from the outer edges in but the closer to Jeremiah's spine he got the flesh started to feel strange, like it couldn't make up it's mind about being hot or cold. He actually rubbed his fingers together, brow furrowing with concern, not sure he was feeling what he thought he was.

"I'm more than capable and yet you end up battered and beaten and-" Alg grunted and exhaled through his nose in frustration.

"Bad enough you decided to be a bloody cop-" he used to joke it was just to get the gun, "now you're throwing yourself at supernatural monsters like a <******** idiot."

He went back to dabbing the cream with concern as to how the burn was cold.

"I'm thickheaded, what can I say," Jeremiah sighed, taking another breath and then trying to not let out a hiss of pained breath whenever Algie was applying the cream.

They were burns but along his spine it felt cold and it was only the quick touch of Algie's fingers that took away from it briefly. The cream was cooling against his skin and not comfortable but it would help. It was supposed to help.

"Oi," he raised his head briefly, only to feel Algie's hand still on his neck and lowered it back down, "part of the battered and beaten came from you." Which he had deserved because spooking the other was a terrible idea. It always was.

His fingers gripped at his thigh. A knot tightly wound in his chest and he did not know what to do with it. Which direction to go. "I didn't throw myself at the bloody ******** radical pacifist slenderdeer." A breath. A snort of annoyance because ******** if he wished he knew nothing about Slenderman. "It could have been you or me that ended up burned, I know you thought the same thing I said." The cold heat was still there in his memory and he felt it suddenly along his spine. As if it was there again, sharp and biting cold in pain as a reminder. He had, ultimately, no regrets that it had been him and not Alg because he could not live with the idea of the other getting hurt.

Not right now.

Not with his head and his heart and everything a mess.

If he could stop it, he would. Jeremiah's fingers were clutching at his trouser leg, at his thighs. "When you are involved I am always a ******** idiot." His eyes were shut, head bowed and shoulders tense. "I don't even know if ..." ... if Algie would have been able to do what he had done; the magic that had saved him. It was his, he knew that, but Algie was always thickheaded and resistant to change. Jeremiah was always adapting, changing (sometimes running) and sometimes why they fought.

"I'm a ******** idiot," he repeated instead of finishing his sentence. Mostly because if he could ever get out the proper words maybe things would go differently.

"You're an idiot." He repeated with huffing agreement. Apparently it was riling him enough that he'd momentarily stopped applying the cream.

"And you're a goddamn pillar of the bloody community! If you knock off, what about Zac?" He was gesticulating, fingertips still curled and coated in burn cream. "I don't approve of airing dirty laundry in front of strangers, but he isn't wrong to be angry with you Jeremiah."

As much as he liked Zac, the young man had come along with Jeremiah when Algie arrived in Ashdown. He was practically the other man's son in all but blood and name. There was, for just a moment, the brief thought that Jeremiah shouldn't be like him- absentee parent extraordinaire- but Algie had made the right decision not to be involved in his child's life. Jeremiah couldn't ignore that he'd made this bed for himself.

Algie let out another disgruntled sounding breath and went back to applying the cream, muttering low mostly to himself, "Dying and leaving me in goddamn America... left decent tea and proper gardens for you.."

Anything that could have been gleaned, feelings or otherwise, from his mutterings were brushed away when Algie got a very bothered look and spoke up at normal volume, "Jeremiah these burns aren't right. The wounds make my fingers chilly.. I think you need-"

Algie's hands flew up in absolute puzzlement, "A magical doctor?"

Jeremiah growled, an honest to goodness growl, at the mentioning of dirty laundry. It was enough to distract him again and refocus his thoughts another direction. "I know that, for ******** sake. I also know that you've got every right to ******** mad with me because after thirty some odd years I am still over ******** protective of you!" His fingers loosened, blood returning to his knuckles.

The detective's head was still bowed, his shoulders still tense. "I have no plans on leaving Zac alone." He was already Zac's legal guardian and he, whether there had been talk or not, been looking into possible adoption. Jeremiah had no plans for heirs, for obvious reasons and ...

His head finally raised up at Algie's muttering, his cheeks turning just the faintest bit pink. Anger had not caught him but that? That did cause a faint ruddy red to flood his face. "Alg, I ..." he started, then blinked when the other man was blowing right on to his injuries. The chill was hard to ignore, especially when there was pain to go along with it.

"I know, it feels cold. The hot water helped some and your hands as well and ..." The silver-haired blink, raised head turning to look over his shoulder. Jeremiah hissed as it pulled at the burns. "I don't," a huff, "know that that is even possible."

His head tilted back forward, then bowed once more. Some of the tension in his shoulders was gone. "I don't like it but it's not surprising." Not with there being magic involved. Jesus.

"Well I don't think this burn cream is going to do much.. and from what little I know of cold burns we can only try to keep it warm." Algie sighed again. Yep- brushed all the way past the feelings. At least for this second, it would probably rubber band back.

"I'll bandage you but then the shirt goes on. And a sweater. Then warm dinner and tea." Alg admonished with a finger wag before he moved to the table for bandages. The only reason he even had an extensive first aid kit was because of Jeremiah... well himself included but he wasn't counting sporadic drunken punches thrown during football matches.

The professor was soon back behind Jeremiah again, a hand on the back of his head a moment to make sure he stayed bowed, before he began to carefully cover the wounds (even if he really thought someone more expert should look at them).

"And what have we learned today?"

This entire conversation was yanking Jeremiah one direction and then another. His stomach was in knots, not just because of the chill that would not go away. Jeremiah raised a hand, waved it in the air for Algie to proceed.

The other man usually with a knowledge about first aid than himself (not that he did not know himself, just that Algie had spent a fair amount of time patching him back together).

He shivered, the temperature difference between Algie's hand, the bandages, and something curling uncomfortably in his stomach.

"That you're not really a rough nurse?" he ventured, glancing out of the corner of his eye towards Algie.

"No I only play one on TV," Algie pursed his lips and looked over his glasses at Jeremiah.

He shook his head with a quirk of lips and his hand flicked out to wack Jeremiah lightly in the back of the head, "Smartass."

Jeremiah was not expecting the sudden sensation, a drop in his stomach. He turned with a hiss, his back protesting the movement and dislodging some of the bandaging, to instead catch the whack to side of his head.

It stung lightly, the detective growling under his breath. His hand reached up to grab Algie's wrist before he pulled back too far. "Alg." A huff, fingers closing around the other man's wrist. "Do you think we could stop hitting me in the head for a bit? I need what is left of my brain to not be rattled so that I can actually talk to you."

Except saying that meant he was rattled.
