Horace was, as usual, down at the training field a bit before the appointed time. He hated being late - well, later than whomever he was meeting with. Leaning against one of the dummies (Sir Reginald), he picked at a hole in his shirt. Clothing never lasted too terribly long with their job. Bodies were artificially strengthened by FEAR bonds, clothing was not. Sliding a thumb over his phone, he texted Cassie to let her know he was here. He sighed and closed his eyes, tipping his head up to the sun.

Cassie, too, hated to be late to anything - but unlike Horace, preferred to be where she was supposed to, right on the dot. She'd been sitting, back resting against a corner of one of Deus' buildings, waiting for Horace to let her know when he was ready. She replied to his text with an emoji, then slipped over to te training fields. Tendaji had been the one to suggest their current course of action, letting Cassie know that she could only be so combat ready through fighting a bunch of dummies. Vegas has shown her, also, that Cassie would need plenty more combat training before she could actually be an effective field operative (Batgirl was going to be an absurdly long stretch). Fiddling with the hem of her shirt, Cassie mumbled a hello to Horace. "So, how does this work?"

He stood up from his lean on the dummy. "Hey, Cassie. Basically, we beat each other until a shield pops. You good to use charges?" Horace summoned Jannisari, his earring disappearing and reforming on his arms as bone and tendon. A weapon like Cassie's should make for an interesting fight. "Do you want first crack?"

The black diamond stud on Cassie's ear dissolved when Horace's did, reforming itself into a thin steel rope capped by a hook and a blade fashioned in a bat's silhouette on opposing ends, coiled in one hand. Tendaji's pressure became denser on Cass' body, a black mass sitting in her hippocampus. "You should take first strike." She replied, unwinding the rope, drawing it taut between hands. "Tendaji thinks I need more experience with being attacked." A bit of pressure relieved. "He also says that not using charges would be insulting."

"Tendaji might be right, but..." Cassie looked awfully light. He shrugged and moved forward, delivering what could only be termed a 'love tap' - barely damaging. Then, he curled his finger up in a beckoning motion. Horace wanted to see how Cassie's weapon actually worked. The mission had been dark and chaotic and he had trusted Dawson to pay attention and cover her. He'd seen essentially nothing. HP: 50/50 DMG: 2 CHG: 1/3

"But...?" Cassie prompted Horace to continue, unsure of what the boy meant. The way he looked her over was telling, at least, and the way he sort of just knicked her with his weapon. Horace thought Cassie incapable of handling herself. The pressure in the Death trainee's head said to prove him wrong, but Cassandra didn't need Tendaji's, or Hirace's, prompting. She'd taken care of herself just fine before joining this little militia; she'd joined Deus as a means of doing so. Unwinding the steel cord and letting out slack, Cassie began spinning the bladed end in tight circles at waist height. The blade skipped in the air, launched by a flick of the wrist, and gave Horace the same treatment he'd given Cassie. "Tendaji's not happy with you; he says you've insulted him." Rolling the shoulder she'd hit, he circled Cassie warily. "But I didn't wanna take it too hard. It's supposed to be a learning experience. But if your weapon wants..." He grinned. "Tendaji can suck it." If a bigger hit was what her weapon wanted, he'd give it, against his better judgement. Horace ran in, ducked, and punched her right in the kidneys. HP: 48/50 DMG: 11 CHG: 2/3

Cassie's reaction time was still sloppy, and Horace was obviously very good at this whole 'run in and beat them up' fighting style she'd seen him display in the field. Luckily for her, the shield kept her kidneys from actually being bruised and possible internal bleeding, but it still hurt enough to make her yelp in pain. Cassie's hand jerked up, blunt hoop in hand, weakly bouncing off Horace's chin. "Ah! Sorry, that sucked." HP: 27 DMG: 1 CHG: 2/3

"Nah, not bad. Good reaction time, and that's important." He moved in close, as if sizing her up and struck out, dragging his blade along her arm. And then Horace was moving away, aware that her weapon had a sizeable range, if she learned to use it. Maybe he should just defend for a while - let her wail on him? "You just have to learn to put force behind your reactions." HP: 47/50 DMG: 5 CHG: 3/3

Cassie recoiled, putting more distance between herself and Horace. His weapon was sharp and honed, just like his battle skills. "Not to make excuses, but we never really had reason to fight in Vader." Tendaji bored down on her mind as the words came out, the thought of 'weakling' resounding, ringing in her ears. "But this isn't Vader, and there are reasons to fight..."
Cassie's wrist flicked, not strong enough, sending the blade skidding through the air and clipping Horace's shoulder, then whizzed back, missing his body. Tendaji was so unwieldy, she thought, before the pressure mounted again.

He flinched back from her blow. It was glancing, but the sight of that just whizzing forward at him was unsettling. He shook his head - Horace couldn't remember if Cassie had been alright with charges even though he's mentioned it literally minutes ago. He looked her over critically and moved forward, striking out when something gave him pause. "Wait, you lived in Vader? Like Darth Vader?" Horace's shock made his hand slip and he probably hit her with far more force than intended. HP: 44/50 DMG: 13 CHG: 3/3

Cassie hadn't been expecting such a hard hit, and found herself squarely sat on the training field grass, blinking away the momentary palatalization. "Y-yeah." She coughed, getting back to her feet - completely prone.
The pressure mounted in her head again, like a migraine after the flash of a camera. Never be prone, don't expose, fight back. Conversation is useless in a fight. All the thoughts flashed through the pressure, Tendaji's anger fueling the trainee's sudden snap to attention, and her rushing toward Horace.
The blade dripped a reeking black ichor that stuck where it slashed Horace's arms, pulsing midnight. She'd never used her charge before, and suddenly Cassie felt close to exhaustion; but was unsure if that was correlated to Tendaji's charge or Horace's barrage.
"Uh, I have no idea what that's going to do..." The girl whispered, mostly to herself. Hopefully nothing too painful? HP: 9 DMG: 0 - Horace takes 3 damage for the next 2 rounds CHG: 0/0

"What the fu-" Horace was always instantly wary of things that dripped gross s**t, especially when said gross s**t got on his skin. It seeped under Jannisari and burned a little, but it wasn't too bad, he guessed. A few seconds later it hit. It traced a burning path through his skin - like nerve damage, bad nerve damage that leaves numbness in its wake. Horace cursed. It was an unfamiliar sensation and he didn't like it. And maybe that contributed to how hard he hit Cassie. He was supposed to be sort of showing her the ropes and instead electricity crackled up and down his arms. It chased the burning but did not eliminate it and he slammed into the girl. HP: 41/50 DMG: 15 CHG: 0/3

Cassie had been lucky enough to have never been struck by lighting before - but she'd always imagined it would feel like her entire body was on fire. Instead, she found, it was as though a hornet's nest had ruptured inside every organ of her body, the angry militia drilling tiny spears into every nerve and crevice. Cassie blacked out for a half second, falling to her knees. When Cassie came to moments later, she found Tendaji back as the bat-shaped clip in her hair, and feeling thoroughly nauseaus; but mostly vulnerable. The loss of her FEAR shield, a presence she unknowingly had become accustomed to, felt like Horace had just ripped her top off and left her exposed. "s**t..." She swore under her breath, quickly saying a silent prayer for forgiveness. Hopefully mother and father hasn't heard her. "You really don't have a low setting, do you sir?"
