Sakura cast her eye upon the sky overhead. A lone kestrel soared high above her, a lonely hunter poised beautifully against its blue background. Where it flew she knew not, but it had a pride and beauty to it that she deeply respected. One lone soul far overhead, so far away from all other contact, cold and alone but yet so strong and so magnificent. She closed her eyes, raising her head into the wind and taking a deep breath. Pain and solitude welled up within her, threatening to stifle her for a brief moment. But that moment passed as she steeled herself, closing her soul to the painful emotions. They would not rule her – she would not let them. She would be as proud as that kestrel, as strong and graceful. She would battle through it. She’d come too far not to.

Casper trudged back towards his home. Well, it wasn’t so much his home as Sakura’s, but he was watching it for her while she went on her journey. It was their one meeting point – where they knew they would always be able to find each other if they got separated, so he made sure to check in on it at least once a week. Before it had been him travelling away, but now it was her turn. She’d been gone for a long while; days had turned into months, months into years. So much time had passed without a word. In all honesty, he was growing worried for his sister. Was she okay? Had she found her answers yet? He shook out his mane, trying not to dwell too much on it but finding himself unable to focus on much else. He had days like these, where all he could think of was Sakura and no one else. He was afraid that he had lost her too.
He let out a frustrated sigh. Who knew where she was now? Had she stumbled upon any of the others in her travels? Maybe they might know. But it was too late in the day to think about that, he wouldn’t have the time to go see them before it was thoroughly dark. He silently cursed himself. Maybe if he’d been here, maybe if he hadn’t gone to fight the stupid kalona, she might have stayed. But that wasn’t fair, Sakura’s journey was important to her. After all, she had lived her whole life holding back in fear, how could he deny her this trip? She needed to be free, to live. He only wished he had been well enough to go with her, but his injuries after the battle had been too much. He needed time to recover, time Sakura didn’t think she had. He hung his head, feeling despair threaten him again. She was his closest friend, and he missed her.

The mare meandered forwards, smiling almost wistfully at the familiar surroundings. She had spent most of her life walking this route, down the same trodden path that led back to the cave. Her footsteps fell back into her old walking rhythm, before she had gone on her long journey and desperation had sped up her pace, her mind flashing back all those days spent walking here. Warm summer days where she had gone out simply to marvel in the sunshine, autumn days spent harvesting fruits to dry out for the winter, so many days, so much time. And now she was back, albeit temporarily. The ghost of a smile flickered across her features as she slowly made her way forwards, her eyes half closed as she was lost in memories.
It was easy to look back on them fondly. So easy to forget the constant doubts that had plagued her. Oh yes, life had seemed so easy then, so simple. She had been young and naïve, but never free. No, she had to remember that. Her father’s memory had haunted her so much then, and it had only grown worse with each step since. She was so close, she could almost taste it. Soon she would know, soon she would find him. But not yet, right now she had a detour to make. She cast her eyes downwards, drawing herself back to the present, to look gently at her swollen belly.

The closer he got to the cave, the more both despair and hope filled him, an odd combination that seemed to burn him from the inside. On the one hand, he fervently dreamed that she might be there. Standing, waiting for him to come home. Changed, perhaps, no doubt she’d been through a lot, but still his Sakura, still his dear sister. He closed his eyes, savouring the image her standing in the soft moonlight, its gentle light falling across her flank. She’d have that brilliant smile on her face. So thrilled to see him – as usual. And they would talk and she’d make all his problems just fade away. But the despair wrenched the image away from him, slowly shredding it. Every time he had come he hoped that she would be there, or at least some sign that she had been looking for him. A flower left behind, a single of Tinsel’s feathers. But there had never been anything, not even a hoofprint to show someone had wandered through.

The first time she had pregnant, Sakura had had no idea what to expect. Even as her belly had begun to swell, she had been unsure, so doubtful. But Kaiya’s teachings resonated through Sakura now, and as she cast her healing magic deep into herself she knew she could sense the gentle stirrings of life deep within her. There could be no doubt – foals were coming. Her expression softened with the warm memories of motherhood. She had loved her three children dearly, though a flash of guilt ripped through her at the thought of Eya. Poor filly, she had deserved better. Sakura’s features hardened, trying to stifle the sorrow that welled up at the thoughts of her daughter. But she had learned from her mistakes – she couldn’t raise children on the move again, not with the brutal pace that she putting herself through. But she couldn’t settle down long enough to raise foals either. The desperation to find her father was too great, unrelenting with its ferocity. Especially now, as she had a lead.
The mare walked into the clearing that had been her home for so long. It was exactly as she had remembered it; nothing had changed here. She felt the smile return to her face as she stepped forwards, gently outstretching her wings to run the tips of her feathers against the familiar rock wall.
