Jeremy was used to seeing a lot of weird things in Destiny City—you didn't have to be a police officer to find weird things here. Sometimes you'd find weird animals. Sometimes you'd find people in weird costumes.
Sometimes you'd find weird kids.
Weird kids in costumes when it was not Halloween and when there was not an adult present wasn't always the worst, but it made Jeremy seriously worry about what the hell people were teaching their kids. This next generation was screwed if they thought this was a good idea.
Jeremy hadn't had an eventful night—which was good, in his line of work; his day had consisted of traffic infractions and taking a report after a break in, so he still had enough energy to pull himself out of his car when he thought he saw some kid in the distance, out on his own. It wasn't late—for him—but he'd have been pissed if his little brother had been that small and out by himself this late.
So he closed the door, locked it, and trotted towards where he saw the kid.
He held his fingers to his lips and whistled, trying to get his attention. "Hey, kid," he added. "—You lost?"litian Let me know if this is okay! If I need to tweak things, just lemme know! <3

It had been a while since he had been able to sneak out to do superhero stuff.
He had ended up getting in trouble with his parents after sneaking out to go through Caedus' portal because he hadn't been able to explain why he had been out or where the scratches and the skinned knees had come from.
His mum's response had been to ground him indefinitely, which had meant that he hadn't been able to get out to do anything apart from school - he hadn't even been able to go to his Sunday swimming pool visits.
Briar had borne the punishment in stoic silence and eventually his mum had relented and ungrounded him, although it hadn't stopped her or dad from trying to do the overprotective thing - even though he had pointed out that he wasn't a kid.
Tonight, however he had to himself, because both Mum and Dad had to do work things that they couldn't get out and so Briar had taken the opportunity to sneak out in order to do Oort things.
Said things had included getting rid of a youma monster, although that had been kind of a while back and it had been kind of quiet since then.
In fact it was quiet enough that Oort had been contemplating perhaps heading to the park and reading some more of the senshi primer on his phone when he had heard someone whistling.
The source of the whistle had turned out to be a man dressed in a police uniform and Oort had shaken his head when the other had asked him whether he was lost.
"No I'm not Mister" he said, because as it happened he really wasn't.Kyuseisha no Hikari your start is perfect Kyu, lmk if I need to make any changes on my end :3

Jeremy lifted his head questioningly, like he was trying to read through the kid's lies, or draw information from him just because he was in uniform. Jeremy himself wasn't particularly intimidating—at least, not when he didn't want to be.
Right now, he didn't want to be.
"All right," he said after a moment. "Well that's good, then. Do your parents always let you run around after dark, or is this something you've decided all on your own?"
He tried not to sound too accusatory; he knew how easily kids got spooked. But sometimes you had to be stern with them or they just didn't get it.
The streets weren't safe for a kid.
Hell, he remembered being a kid. He couldn’t have been much older than this one when he started sneaking out. But Jeremy had always figured he had a good reason—and he'd have much rather this kid be screwing around than have a reason to sneak out of his house.

Oort didn't think that he had said anything weird and so he wasn't why the officer guy had
The police officer had stared at him, although Oort wasn't sure why because it wasn't like he had said anything weird or anything and the other was kind of staring at him as if he had something on his face.
Eventually however the police officer finally stopped with the stare thing - which was kind of a relief because it had kind of making him want to fidget...
Although it wasn't something that Oort was going to admit to because fidgeting was totally not a superhero thing.
Nor was he going to talk about his parents, because neither of them were aware about the superhero thing and Oort was rather hoping that he could do the keeping an eye out for monsters and all the other superhero stuff and then get back home before his parents got home from work given that it hadn't been that long since his Mum had ungrounded him and he didn't particularly want to be grounded again because being grounded sucked.
"I'm not running around" Oort said at last, because he wasn't going to talk about his parents - either of them - as a part of him wondered for one long moment whether he should mention anything about the monsters before ultimately deciding against it.

Jeremy quirked a brow down at the boy. He seemed like he expected a bit more for the explanation, but when it did not come he cleared his throat. "Okay, you're not running around. What are you doing, then?"
He crossed his arms over his chest now, very obviously expecting an answer. He hadn't yet decided what he was going to do about the boy but he was pretty sure that, at the very least, he needed to make sure he got home safely. Telling the parents was another thing; on one hand, Jeremy didn't want something bad to happen to the kid. And he didn't want to get written up, of course. There was that part of it that was pretty important.
He liked his job, good and bad.
…But he remembered being a kid. Remembered wanting to get out and get some fresh air, or do something. Or just get some peace and quiet. This was a better part of town than the one he'd wandered in, but letting a kid go just didn't sit right with him.
But he had a few minutes, and he couldn’t help but want to hear what the kid was actually up to.

Oort gave the police officer mister a long look, because whilst he had initially decided mentioning anything about the monsters the mister looked kind of like his Mum when she was in 'answers mode' and he wasn't sure he could tell him no the way he could his Mum...
Well okay perhaps not tell her no per se, but more doing the silent thing like he had after the portal thing which had gotten him into so much trouble.
However the police mister was also an adult and from Oort's experience adults generally didn't tend to believe in the monsters - after all the mister-doctor-emt guy who had helped him and his brother out after the stupid concert certainly hadn't.
However he was also kind of torn because he knew he was supposed to be polite to police officer guys but at the same time he wasn't really supposed to talk to others about the superhero stuff either - well at least not unless they were also secret superheroes and the police officer didn't look or feel like a secret superhero.
"I'm looking for monsters" he said at last, because whilst he didn't really expect the officer mister to believe him he knew that there were other 'not superhero' people who had seen the monsters too - like the one who he had helped out with a bag strap monster. "So I can make them do the dust thing before they make trouble or do bad things."

Talking star cat sounded like something a kid would come up with after a sugar high and a video game binge session. Jeremy sucked in a breath and puffed his cheeks out before releasing the breath slowly and sighing. "Okay," he said slowly, drawing out the word as he tried to formulate just how to respond to that.
"…What type of monsters are we talking about? Because—you know—the police," he gestured towards himself, "Are usually supposed to be the ones taking care of the bad guys. Your biggest job right now should be trying to do good in school and make your parents proud. You wanna let me know why you can't stay at home? —If you want to fight monsters, there are plenty of video games you can play. You don't have to be out looking for them on the streets. You're just going to get yourself hurt out here."

The officer mister didn't believe him.
It wasn't particularly surprising because truth be told Oort hadn't really been expecting him to. But it didn't make him feel any less disappointed.
"Not bad guys" he corrected, not bothering to hide the annoyance from his voice. "Monsters. Real monsters - creepy ones" he thought about the bag strap monster "Well they're usually creepy."
There was more to it than the monsters though and Oort knew that there was more to it.
But he also knew that there wasn't much point in talking to the officer mister about it either because he'd probably go on about bad guys being the Police's job again...
And these weren't the sort of guys that the Police could handle.
"Anyway I've got to go" he added abruptly, because actually it wasn't really much point in talking to the officer mister at all - not when it was clear that the other wasn't going to believe him anyway.
After all Oort didn't have forever - he was going to have to go home at some point... Because if he got home after his parents did then his Mum really was going to ground him again.
And he really did want to do his bit to keep an eye out for youma before he did.Kyuseisha no Hikari I sometimes feel like I should apologise for Oort

Jeremy gave the kid a look, exasperated. He'd spent years trying to convince his younger brother that there was no such thing as monsters, and he was still having nightmares about them.
The fact was, Jeremy knew there were monsters. But they didn't look like Frankenstein, or zombies. They looked like your next door neighbor, or the mailman. And sometimes they looked like crazy, mutated, rabid dogs, but most of the time they just looked like ordinary people.
"Yeah," Jeremy said, instead. "You do have to go. Straight home. And if I catch you out tonight—or any other night—I'm going to drive you home and have a good, long talk with your parents, but I'll let you off easy, tonight. I'd feel much better about all of this if you let me take you back to the car and I'll give you a lift home. You can go fight monsters again when the sun's up."

Oort returned the officer mister's look with a scowl that was on the slightly huffy side.
The scowl deepened at the other's mention that he needed to go home.
"I'm not going home" he said bluntly, because he wasn't - well at least he wasn't going to do so immediately. "I still need to look for monsters" and he wasn't going to let the officer mister stop him from doing so.
Instead he called out "Key Up!" as he called on his magic, pointing the small ethereal key towards himself and twisting it as if in an invisible lock before turning and dashing up the street, sandalled feet slapping against the side walk.
Because whilst Oort wasn't the biggest fan of his magic, hopefully the short burst of speed would be enough to stop the officer mister from being able to follow.Quote: Key Up! Oort calls on his magic while chanting the name of this attack and the magic forms into a small ethereal-looking ornate key. By standing in front of an ally and turning the key as if in an invisible lock Oort can use this this to give an ally either a strength boost or a speed boost (one or the other and he doesn't get to choose which) of about 15%. Alternatively Oort can use it on himself, but he will only get the speed boost. Duration: Oort has 15 seconds to use the 'key' otherwise the key will disappear. The boost will last for 10 seconds once Oort has used the 'key' Usage amounts: Twice per standard battle, but not on the same person. Kyuseisha no Hikari fin on your tag? also these two should totes run into each other again at some point :3

The scowl on the kid's face wasn't enough to scare Jeremy, but he seemed absolutely lost when the kid started talking something about a key. Before Jeremy could protest or use his police officer threats to try and reel the kid back in or drag him to his car, the kid was running off.
Jeremy chastised himself—and swore under his breath—before he took off running.
The kid, though.
The kid was fast, and Jeremy knew he'd lost him within the first minute.
"Damn it," he muttered, trotting to a slow stop. He stood quiet for a moment, hoping for some slip up—a yelp or sneeze or bump in the night, but none came and Jeremy wasn't going to stand around like an idiot all night.
He grumbled under his breath and fussed around in the area for a bit, but he knew when he'd been outrun. Thankfully, there was no report to file on this, so he didn't have to worry about explaining how some kid managed to give him the slip.litian I'd like that a lot 8D <3
