Sanidine was pacing—which wasn't uncommon, these days. He had a hand on his chin and walked in a straight line. Fifteen steps, turn, fifteen steps, turn. He'd been doing this for an hour, occasionally glancing at the youma that just watched him.

It was unnerving and he scowled, but he couldn’t be mad; he'd made him like this. So he just sighed and paced.

And Evan watched him. Or, whatever was left of Evan; Sanidine didn't know if he needed a new name or what. Exasperated, he just tore his gaze away and paced faster. He was muttering under his breath—not that it helped him think, but just to break the silence—until he sensed another energy signature nearby. He went rigid and stood up straight, lowering his hand and casting his gaze towards the figure in the distance.

He couldn't see anything, and only had a vague idea of where it was even coming from. Impatient, and already in a foul mood, he shot out, "What the hell are you doing lurking over there? You got something to say?" he challenged, half expecting Cavansite—or, wait, she was a Captain now. Whatever, maybe she got demoted, or she was back to torment him, or—

Logic eluded him.

He was paranoid. Nothing had to make sense. Everything was wrong.

He was patrolling now - if one could really call it that - regularly. Wolfeite thought it less of surveillance and more an opportunity to devour more starseeds and siphon off more energy; after all, simply patrolling without doing anything was useless and benefited nothing and no one.

He had only eaten one starseed tonight, but for once Wolfeite's attention was distracted. There was an agent ahead, the signature clearly Chaos - but there was something else as well, something that Wolfeite could not identify, not until he came closer and saw.

A slow smile crossed Wolfeite's face beneath the kerchief.

He stepped out onto the street, brows arched in a relaxed, calm fashion, the lower half of his face hidden - by the hunger in his eyes was there, if one could come close enough to see it. Wolfeite eyed the man and the creature beside him with unabashed interest.

"Good evening," he said lightly, his voice low and rasping. "Who might you be?"

Sanidine's eyes narrowed and he scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Little rude not to introduce yourself first, lieutenant."

But it wasn't Cavansite, so he didn't care who it was.

"I'm Sanidine. Do you want something, or are you just going to stand there and stare? —You at least gonna give me a name to address you by or do I need to start making things up?"

He was in a bad attitude—grouchy, and barely in a better mood now that he knew this wasn't Cavansite.

This guy didn't know what he had done. He couldn’t know what Evan was.

It was enough to make Sanidine relax a little, but Evan just cocked his head from where he sat, watching the agent curiously. There was a blank understanding in the youma's eyes, but he sat defensively, like he was uncomfortable with the intrusion. But the youma did not speak, or move; it just looked at Sanidine expectantly.

He raised a brow.

"Wolfeite," he said, his tone light, in spite of the dark eyes that fell, not upon the Captain, but on the creature beside him. He did not express his pleasure at meeting another agent - that was a relatively pointless statement - and he stopped a few feet away, hands held loosely at his sides.

It had to be one of the youma creatures that Labyrinthite had spoken of. It was not raven shaped, like the bird had been, but there had been every indication that the size and shapes of youmas were far and widely varied. Some, the general had said, could even be human shaped.

But he would not press for too much too soon. Overwhelming someone was the surest way to get them to back off.

"Is that," Wolfeite asked lightly. "A youma?"

Sanidine's eyes narrowed further and he looked at Wolfeite as though he had insulted him. But Wolfeite had provided his name, and it was something.

Sanidine knew he was unnecessarily on edge. Drawing further attention to his emotional state was unwise, so he turned away from the Lieutenant to observe the youma instead.

Evan—the youma—didn't seem to feel threatened by the new Negaverse agent, but he didn't seem like he was in any rush to great him. The fluffy black creature just cocked its head to one side, not unlike a curious owl might. It seemed to be sizing Wolfeite up but remained seated.

"It is," Sanidine confirmed after a moment, though after he spoke the confusion began to flicker in and he looked back up at Wolfeite.

"You're in the Negaverse and can't tell what's a youma and what isn't?"

It wasn't phrased kindly, but that, at least, seemed to be a genuine question.

He wasn't trying to make friends and despite his bad mood he wasn't necessarily trying to chase this guy away. He seemed to catch how off his question might have sounded and cleared his throat. "I mean, I know they all wind up looking pretty different. It's kind of weird to get used to. How long have you been in the Negaverse?"

He had observed the Captain, of course; had watched the expression on his face change, had let his eyes drift over the uniform, so ludicrously different than his own (which he vastly preferred). Wolfeite smoothed an idle thumb over one of the rings on his index fingers, ignoring the derisive tone offered by the other man.

The creature looked...relatively harmless. Even ridiculous, not vicious at all. Wolfeite wasn't certain whether to be intrigued or disappointed, and found himself, in the end, a mixture of both.

"The youma, as I've seen, come in all different shapes and sizes," he said lightly. "I'm only curious as to the myriad of appearances they can take on. This one looks quite...catlike, if I'm not mistaken. I've not seen one that looks as it does, to be perfectly honest."

He glanced up at the agent again, the vague smile hidden behind his kerchief.

"A few months now," said Wolfeite, his tone relaxed. "I find it immensely rewarding. What about yourself? Is he yours, by the way?" he added, with a gesture at the youma. "I've heard higher ranking officers are capable of bonding with a youma to have one of their own."

Sanidine watched the lieutenant with piercing eyes still, trying to find some crack in the façade. He watched him like he expected some confession, some sudden truth or clue that this was just some great scheme designed to get him to admit to wrong doing.

But Wolfeite seemed only like a lieutenant with genuine questions, and who had approached with no hostility.

In the end, Sanidine must have realized it was his own aggression that was spurning him, and Wolfeite had done nothing to warrant.

He rolled his shoulders and relaxed before supplying a casual shrug. He wished that was all it took to answer the questions, but he elaborated, "He's mine, yes."

Possessive, as always.

This seemed to please the youma, who relaxed and moved a little closer. His ears twitched every time Sanidine spoke and it was clear the Captain had most of his attention, even if the youma's golden eyes were fixated on Wolfeite.

Sanidine continued, "I suppose I can't complain about the job, it's got it's perks. I've been around for a while. Year or so, I guess. But I wasn’t much interested in the youma when I first joined. I liked the power, the strength. Being able to do what you want, living for the moment. I didn’t like the youma," he said suddenly. "I get that they're tools and all, but they just. I don't know. Rubbed me the wrong way. But I'm not exactly an animal person, and I'm not exactly sure what the hell you'd classify them as. But."

He glanced to the youma at his side for only a second. "I guess they're not all so bad." His eyes returned to the lieutenant. "You seem pretty interested in them, though. They don't freak you out?"

He felt the hunger, deep in the pit of his stomach; like an aftertaste, a nagging sensation that refused to ebb. Wolfeite tamped down on it, restrained from reaching into his pocket to secure the starseed he'd put there earlier and bite into it as though it were an apple. That was for later; he couldn't afford to waste it, not when he needed to know more about this creature.

Wolfeite gave a slow nod of his head at the affirmation of possession, letting his gaze flick over the creature once more. It seemed attached to Sanidine, if nothing else; briefly he wondered whether it was possible to take another person's personal youma, though he had little interest in this docile thing.

"Not at all," said Wolfeite, in truthful answer to the question. Lying bore no merit here, not when he saw little point to it. "I find them fascinating, actually. They are creatures that I had not expected to find when I joined the Negaverse, and they are much more than I thought."

He let out a hum of thought, tapping a gloved fingers against the side of his chin as he considered.

"Do you know what they're capable of?" Wolfeite asked curiously. "I have not yet seen many that are attached to another agent. What benefits do you gain from having one of your own?"

"They're capable of a lot of things," Sanidine said; he shrugged limply, planting his hands on his hips as he rocked on his heels just slightly. "I've seen them fly and breathe fire, drip sludge, and spit ice. Most of the ones I see are stupid. They just hide in the shadows and drain energy. Mostly it's their shape that is different, then. They look like ******** up animals or something, but I haven't figured out what makes them different, or if there are special classes of them or anything. This one," he nodded to his youma absentmindedly.

"Don't know what the hell this one does."

It wasn't something he really wanted to get into; on one hand, it would be great if Evan knew how to fight. On the other hand, he didn't want to risk someone dusting him permanently.

"He's fast, but skittish. Got claws, but he doesn't seem to know how to use them. Sharp teeth, I guess, but he'll let you stick your hands in his mouth and I've never seen him bite anything. Except, you've gotta watch out for his spit. If you hold his mouth open for too long it starts sizzling, and I'm not stupid enough to stick my hand near something acidic. But."

He didn't want to shrug, and didn't want to seem stupid, but he hadn't been able to dig up much information. His superiors all seemed too busy, and he didn't know what they'd say if they found out he did this.

"He's new, so there's still time," he finally finished. "The only benefit I've seen so far is that he's an extra set of eyes and comes when I call. Does whatever I say."

Mostly.

Well—he tried, at least.

"They might have some information on things down in Negaspace, in some of their books or databases. Can you get there yourself, or do you have someone who can teleport you down there?"

I've seen them fly and breathe fire. Drip sludge and spit ice.

The possibilities felt endless to Wolfeite. He felt a twinge of pleasure shoot through him; a desire for more, to understand how it was that these creatures gained such abilities. If he could somehow acquire them, perhaps he'd have more strength to himself.

It was an exhilarating thought. He could become more powerful.

"So for now, perhaps, a defensive creature, rather than an offensive one."

Wolfeite gave a slow nod at Sanidine's commentary, eyes still sweeping over the little fluffy youma. This one was perhaps useless to him, and while Sanidine continued to provide him with information, he had little intention of aggravating the man. He still needed him, for now, and therefore he'd leave them alone.

For the time being.

Wolfeite's head rose, gaze cutting across to the Captain.

"There are books?" he repeated, his interest growing. "I can get to Negaspace, I suppose, but where would these books be? These databases? Are they accessible to all, or merely higher ranks?"

If they were only available to the higher ranks, he'd have to work a little harder, but so be it."

Sanidine's anger seemed to slowly ebb; he wanted more information on youma, but he couldn’t see the benefit of chasing away someone with a similar search for information. He rolled his shoulders, feeling the tension slowly ease out.

"Check in the castle. Don't bother going up the stairs or trying to get into any of the locked rooms, but if you head into the Castle and just poke around on the first floor has a lot of information tucked away. There's a computer lab, you can access a lot of files without a log in, but if you want to get to some of the restricted stuff you'll probably have to talk to one of the Intelligence Officers about a log in and password, or getting permission." He shrugged. "There's a library, too. I can't tell what's important information or not. A lot of the books are things you could probably find in an old bookstore, but every now and then something interesting pops up. There's a file room, but the Intelligence Officers seem a little protective of it unless you've got a good reason, but. Yeah, if you're looking for reading material, Castle's where it's at. You can go in the Rift and watch the youma if you're really that interested in them, but," he shrugged. "Not all of them seem to like company."

He made mental notes of all Sanidine was telling him, Wolfeite sorting information into different categories: useful, potentially useful, and unimportant. He had little knowledge of the inner workings of Negaspace, but was pleased to hear that there was more for him to grasp.

There was, it seemed, an entire world at his fingertips - another world.

He wanted it.

"You've been very informative," said Wolfeite, with a glance at the youma, and then back at the Captain again. No part of his expression spoke of anything other than demure satisfaction and calm regard; the hunger for more was buried beneath the facade of the obedient lieutenant.

"Thank you," he said, and the smile he offered was hidden beneath the black kerchief secured around the lower half of his face. "I should leave you be, but I will make sure to look at this...Castle you speak of. I have yet to venture deeper into Negaspace, but I recall the Castle, though I haven't explored it yet. However, it seems the place to start."

There was something distinctively odd about the Agent in front of him, but Sanidine couldn’t put his finger on it, and couldn't tell if he was just reading him wrong. His own face was passive, but he pursed his lips and shrugged dismissively.

"You do that. But you let me know if you find anything interesting. If you're spending too much time down there, I'll probably bump into you. Best of luck."

He offered a little wave, not because he really cared, but because the social cue was ingrained in him, and he'd rather leave on better terms than they'd started. The truth was, Sanidine didn't really have anyone he could talk to about this youma business; most people seemed to brush them off.

This guy, though.

Sanidine would have to catch up with him and see if he managed to find out anything useful.
