"Are you sure you can carry all these, Harper?"

"Yes, ma'am," the girl replied, trying to mask the irratation in her voice. As much as she adored the libraian, it got old being asked that same question over and over.

The hawk girl carefully slid the stack of books off the desk and into her other, awkwardly positioning her arms to support everything. "Goodbye," she offered politely, bowing her head and managing to get out the door without dropping anything.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and--oh, crap!

Two kids zoomed past on skateboards, causing Harper to drop the entire stack of five books. "HEY, WATCH IT!" the girl screamed at them, her feathers puffing up to twice their size.

With a snort, she knelt down and carefully began gathering her dropped teasures.

Why did he have to go to the library? Laial inwardly groaned. From what he heard from Maji, he was to go to the library to pick up 'reading material', a.k.a. she thought he spent-too much time watching tv and she wanted to have him do something 'productive' and 'educational'. Feh. Who needed educational? He got smart enough from the Discovery Channel, Invader ZIM, and Fullmetal Alchemist. They all taught him many things. Even if he still couldn't use alchemy yet.

He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he hardly noticed the other girl coming from the library. Until he slammed into her, that is.

And that was that.

The rope representing Harper's temper snapped. Her already ruffled feathers flared up more, and the girls yellow eyes gleamed angrily. Honestly, she didn't know what this thing was she was yelling at, but she did know it had about tripped over her.

"CAN'T YOU WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING?!" People walking on the sidewalk across the road began to stop, curious about the comotion. "THEY DON'T SPARE YOU FROM WALKING IN THE STREET SO YOU CAN STOP PAYING ATTENTION WHERE YOU'RE GOING, YOU KNOW!"

Feathers puffed up, wings lifted higher than usually, and a very, very aggravated look on her face, Harper quickly gathered the books that had again been dropped during the collision.

Laial snorted indignitaly. The girl neededn't be so mean. It was an accident. They happened all the time. Then he relized a minor detail. Her voice almost sounded...screechy. Like a...bird. No, that was silly...was it? Or was it really feathers that he felt when he ran into her and not his inagination? Shivering in fear slightly, he decided to look at her to asure him that she wasn't a bird.

Of course, she was a bird, so this did nothing but make worse case scenario come true. With a small, "Eeek!", he instinctively retreated to 'absolute defence', a.k.a. hide himself in his shell.

For the third time, the books dropped to the ground, sprawling out on the side walk. A few of the pages had ripped out and blown away, but Harper failed to notice.

Her only thought: What the HELL? This was new. And odd. Very, very odd.

"I--uh--" Nervously, her eyes scanned the various people who had stopped. The number had increased when...whatever this thing was started hiding.

Blushing slightly, Harper cleared her throat nervously and tapped lightly on the shell with her knuckles, leaning into it so the one inside could hear her whisper. "Hey, come on, people are staring at us. I'm sorry, alright? Just come out of there?"

She guessed she could just leave him there, but it really hadn't been his fault her day hadn't been going well, and Harper wasn't above giving apologies when she felt they were due.

The shell quickly rolled itself into the doorway of the library. This was a shadowed place, where you needed to actually be looking at it directly. Unfortunetly, many people on the street happened to be doing just that. Staring at a giant shell and a girl with wings.

Laial was oblivious to the staring, of course. He couldn't see through his shell; he was merely replying to what he had heard the bird say first. After hearing her request, he immediatly steadied the shell and peeked his face out, still hiding in the corner of the library entrance.

Harper sighed in relief when he started moving. In most situations, people staring at her was a good thing, as she would usually be preaching her opinion on some subject, but... That situation had just been embarassing, when she was glad to get away from.

The library had been a safe haven from the outside world since she'd learned to read--which was quick, and she was glad of all places this is where they'd ended up.

After mumbling a few things to herself, she leaned against the wall and got a good look at...whatever it was. She'd noticed the weirdest people always came from the same place, and never hesitated in asking--

"You from D-Corp, too?"

Laial's ears perked up the tiniest bit when D-Corp was mentioned. He nodded slightly, indicating to the bird that he was a D-Corp child also. He feverishly hoped that he never ever had her in any of his classes. Or any other birds. He shivered at that thought. Of course, Laial had no way of knowing that there were many birds in D-Corp, so he thought the completely inncorect thought that she was the only one.

What a freak, Harper thought, quirking a brow. She never thought things like that based on how one looked--the concept of judging someone only one that wasn't even one she could grasp. A lot of people could easily get misconceptions from her appearence.

Little did she know it was occuring before her eyes. How was she suppose to know he thought she'd eat him? Gross. "Don't get freaked out," she mumbled, trying to sound a bit more friendly. She hadn't yelled at him THAT bad! "It's no big deal--the books are okay."

One of Laial's eyes quickly zipped over to the books the bird had been carrying. Yes, they seemed alright, although he saw a few pages some ways away from the books. However, the bird didn't need to know that...she might decide to do...something. Like eat him. That would be bad. Another eye looked the bird over. She didn't look big enough to eat him...she looked almost the same size as him! Whether or not he wanted to stand up next to her to find out right now, well...
