Before you looms Waite State Forest, a nature preserve popular with hikers, campers, and various other do-ers of things. Between the two sparsely-maintained roads is a gatehouse, the boom gates lifted high like some kind of archaic salute. There is no one behind the windows; all that can be seen within is a stool and a desk, layered with inches of what seems to be thick dust. On the wall is a poster, old, in the style of 50s propaganda: Explore Scenic Waite! A familiar dark-skinned woman smiles from the faded paper as you pass.

There will be time to investigate later. The voice (come and see, come and see) drives you onward.

You pass the parking lot, and soon enough you're under the thick boughs of evergreen trees. The path is overgrown and muddy, and unnaturally still. The raindrops don't seem to make any noise on the branches above them, but they patter gently against your umbrellas. The voice is blessedly silent now that you're where it wants you to be.

There's some small object half-sunk in the mud ahead of you...

You should investigate it.

The forest was a bit of a relief, in all honesty. Nature had a calming effect, even if this other Ashdown was on the creepier side. The artist enjoyed the sound of the raindrops hitting her umbrella, and instinctively her hands tightened around the handle she was holding. "...I've always enjoyed nature," she commented, more to herself than anyone in particular, only to shrug her shoulders some. "Not surprising, really, how many artists are inspired by the natural world..."

It was as she said this that an object in the mud caught her eye. Curious, Asiya stepped closer and looked down at it. It was hard to tell what it was, currently, given that it was half-sunk in the ground. Well, this wouldn't do. She needed to see it better! Without even a second of hesitation, Asiya bent down and proceeded not only to touch the object, but try to lift it up so she could get a better look.

Mud made things so dirty; what was this strange object?

Chris tuned out the talk soon enough, simply trying to enjoy the walk. It was a little more relaxing with the huge group of people that had gathered, safety in numbers and all that. It also helped that Chris had sort of nudged him and Autumn to be in the middle of the pack, lest something happened and picked off the edge.

Look, he was just looking out for the safety of the horror movie minority club, really. Although it was partly because he was terrified but that he wasn't quite willing to admit.

The silence of the voice was nice and as they continued up the path, he noticed the item. He wasn't the first to reach it, but Chris dragged Autumn along until he could crouch by the first person to reach it and stare at the item.

"What is it?" He asked her.

Well, there was something in the mud. If this were regular Ashdown Leila would have figured it was a booze bottle or a cigarette box or a used condom, but they were in Spooky Land so its true nature was ambiguous. She was intensely curious. After rummaging around the ground for a moment, she turned up a proper stick and used it to cautiously nudge the strange item.

Jeremiah stayed close to Algie and Zac the entire time they moved through the area. At least until there was something visible in the ground. Glancing over to Algie and Zac, he was about to say something to them before he realized that Asiya was already going for it and touching it.

Part of him wanted to snap out to be careful but he didn't.

A handkerchief was pulled from his pocket and tossed at Asiya. "Go ahead and clean it up! See what it is." Not that he wasn't already heading that way to get a better look, maybe even get a hand on it just in case it was like the ******** books.

Might want to stop him, Alg. He makes terrible decisions.

"Oh no you bloody well don't.." Algie's hand shot out and he hooked his finger in Jeremiah's back belt loop. Him being mid-motion bobbed the author on his feet, bumping him against Jeremiah's back, but he didn't let go.

"For once let other people pick up shifty objects in the shadow realm.." He grumble-murmured to the other. "Or god help me I'll hook you with my umbrella and drag you around these woods."

He then stepped back a step, though his finger still hooked, "We can observe at a safe distance."

She wouldn't be the first person to approach the object. Ves was too uncertain still of everything to want to be the one to touch it. But as she passed the faded poster, she paused to stare. That... face. She almost reached out to pull the poster down, but the voice pulled her forward, and she found herself following the crowd.

"What is it?" She said, echoing, no doubt, everybody else's thoughts.

As Asiya lifts the object from the mud, helped along by Leila's prodding, its shape becomes a little clearer. It is vaguely oblong, probably a shoe of some kind...

She wipes the mud away from the side of the shoe. There, in black sharpie, is the legend HELIODORA: the last teen to go missing. However, the shoe is too... solid, to be just a shoe.

Asiya wipes a little more mud away, and that is when they realize:

There's still a foot inside the shoe.

Marcus had been.... okay considering how he was ready to accept the fact that they were in some alternate dimension and he was sure that it had been opened due to some mishap in what no doubt was an underground testing facility.

And while the woods was less unsettling than the towns, he was still not happy with the events.

He also gave a small girlish scream at the sight of foot in shoe.

"Ah, s**t."

That's all that came from Leila -- very little in the way of shock and horror, her tone was mostly that of disappointment that wouldn't have been unwarranted by someone who just dropped their ice cream. Here they were in mysterious magical land, and the ground was still coughing up dead bodies. Why did it have to be human flesh? Why couldn't it have been the Ark of the Covenant, or a poison ivy plant, or some kind of d***o? Nope. Dead body. Or part of one.

"Hey. Hey, people. I'm gonna take a closer look at this, okay? I do forensics and might be able to figure something out." She moved a bit closer to Asiya. "There might also be more... uh. More pieces nearby. So stay sharp. Detective Mercer, you in on this?"

"'s fine, christ --" Alexis shrugged off Jeremiah's attempt to offer bandages, just wiping their palms off on their clothing - he was a cop. They didn't need to trust him anyways. They'd seen him around. (He wasn't trustworthy. They'd have to watch themself around him - because more probation, more being-watched -- no. No no no. Not acceptable.)

"Did we just ******** find a dead chick's foot," Alexis proceeded to deadpan, looking around with something more close to readiness than fear. "If we get jumped, you're all fendin' for yourselves. I have a knife, and it's my knife." It was a very nice pocketknife. Maybe they should have brought two, but you never knew when you were going to get pulled into Rain World. "Who's ready to chew off their own feet? Is this ********' forest Saw or somethin'?"

She had no idea what she expected the object to be.

A trinket, perhaps. Something nice and shiney. Maybe a necklace that somebody dropped, or a treasure from a by-gone era. That would have been lovely to find within the mud. Images ran through her head when she picked up the object of what it could be, and her thoughts also ran to treasure hunts and quests. Oh -- what a romantic she was. A foolish, foolish young woman.

What the object was, in actuality, was nothing like that.

It was nothing like she had in mind, at all.

It was a shoe.

A shoe with a foot still in it.

"Ya Rab!" (OOC Note: "Oh, my Lord!")

Asiya reverted to her native Arabic when caught by surprise from the severed limb. The artist was thanking her lucky stars for Jeremiah's handkerchief. She had used that to partially pick up the item when it was still sunk in the ground, so the fine piece of cloth saved her from touching in directly. Regardless of that fact, it was still a severed limb, and she was still grossed out. Wordlessly and without really thinking, she tossed the object away from her, and in the direction of Jeremiah.

Oh, what she would give for a body of water to purify herself. She had literally touched death, and as a result, she shrunk back and tried to disappear in the throngs of people. Her face pale, she then gazed over at Chris and Ves, who had asked what it was.

"I-...you....you all saw it..." She then shivered and wrapped her arms around herself in a hug. She did not want to say what the object was out loud. Boy, was her head spinning now.

Her reaction was instantaneous. Autumn screamed when the mysterious object was revealed to be a shoe, and inside was a foot. Bile rose in her throat and her eyes burned, and God. God it was a ******** foot. They were all going to die in this ******** forest, she knew it. When the horror of the situation subsided from the burning cry in her throat, she turned and pressed her face to Chris's chest, inappropriateness be dammed.

"I'm gonna be sick. Holy ********, I'm gonna be sick. It's a foot. It's a goddamn foot. Oh my god. Oh my god, Chris, I just wanna go home. I wanna wake up now." Was she crying? Definitely. Lord have mercy she didn't sign up for any of this s**t today. She hated all of these goddamn people and this whole ******** mess. Maybe it was just a dream.

Please, God, let it be a dream.

Jeremiah stumbled backwards when Algie yanked on his belt loop, feeling the other man bumping into his back.

"She did pick it up, Alg," he grumble-muttered back. When Algie kept walking backwards, the man ended up stumbling and having to reach around to steady himself. Which ended up landing his hand on Algie's arse. Thankfully his cheeks were already bruised otherwise someone might've caught sight of the faint blush that appeared.

His hand fell away slowly, as if it was nothing (because he had to act like it was nothing or else it would be something - it was) before he saw Asiya cleaning the object and realizing it was ...<********>. A weight settled uncomfortably in his stomach, Jeremiah frowning (not thinking about the fact that his hand, while it had fallen away from Algie's arse was not curled into the fabric of his vest above his waist). Leila was given a nod of assent, that this was a thing they could do.

This was work. This they could handle.

Except that the foot and handkerchief was being tossed his direction and he immediately let go of Algie to catch the foot. Thankfully his handkerchief was with it as well and he shifted so that he was holding it with that.

"Dr. Townhome, if you would have a look?" Blue-eyes glanced down at the foot before back up to her. "As much as I loathe to say this, be careful where you step everyone!" There might be more evidence.

He looked over to Asiya. "Take deep breaths. In through your mouth, out through your nose." That would help calm her and make sure that she got enough air while she was kind of acceptably flipped out.

Kalisha still had no idea what the heck was going on, or where they were, but at the very least she was not alone anymore, and that was a small relief, at the very least. Of course, that relief wouldn't last very long, given how strange and creepy everything was here. And how she was slowly getting soaked thanks to not having taken an umbrella. Though that wasn't her fault, for once, the forecast said nothing about rain !

Kalisha was content to stay away from the strange object, thank you very much. but that still didn't stop her from taking a step back when the startled screaming happened. Thankfully she wasn't close enough to really see, but... a foot ? Eesh.

Wait... more parts ?

Double eesh.

Still, she made her way carefully toward Asiya who was... well, quite pale, understandably so. "Are you alright ?" She asked, leaving herself open for an hug if the other girl wished for some comfort. As much as a stranger could provide, at any rate. "I can hold you if it will help you."

Did she even take her water bottle with her this morning ? s**t
