Zigari frowned at the ground as Callie and them made their way back to their dorm room. It had been a month since the incident with the elf — and, thankfully, they had not ran into her anymore. Zigi had been warmed by the fact that Callie had stood up for them and they felt like, for the first time, they had a friend. Zigi had still kept their distance, though. As much as they had gone through, it was still hard for the naga to trust another so completely. Things were easier in their shared room, now and they no longer shoved Callie out of their bed if Zigi happened to awaken and find the neko curled up next to them.

Classes had been going well as well. Overall the teachers were great and Zigari was enjoying themselves as much as one could while at school. That is, until this last class. They had been assigned a writing assignment — one that did not sit very well with Zigari. They had been tasked with writing about their family and their past. This was most definitely something that Zigari had no desire to relive and write about for others to read. No. Zigi remained quiet the whole walk back — not even uttering a word when they finally made it back to their dorm.

The only sound that escaped them was a sound that was a mix between a huff and a sigh as they dropped their satchel on the floor and proceeded to flop down into their bed. Zigi buried their face into the pillow, fangs biting into it out of frustration. Perhaps they could talk to the teacher — explain things. Surely they would understand. Wouldn’t they? Zigari turned onto their side and curled their tail around and close to them and tried to ignore the rest of the world for the time being.

User Image In the couple of months since they were first pushed into a roommate situation, things had gotten much better between the neko and naga. Well, as good as things for an insanely shy and nervous neko and an obviously avoidant naga could be. Zigari made it pretty clear that they weren't opening up completely to her, but what mattered most to Callie at this point was the fact she didn't get shoved off the bed every time she curled up beside the one she called friend. She wasn't a very needy sort outside of that, and it was a hard habit to break.

As they made their way back from classes on this particular day, Callie puzzled over why Zigari had such a sad expression. She knew better than to pry into their personal life, but she did not like seeing her only friend feeling so sad. The neko's eyes watched as the naga flopped onto their bed. She stood there quietly, watching sadly as her friend buried themself into their pillow before curling up to hide from the world.

Callie's head canted to the side, ears falling back. What could she do to help her friend feel better? The only thing she knew outside of talking was snuggles and pets. Smiling, sure that it would help -- even though previous experience should have told her otherwise -- the little neko hopped up onto Zigari's bed. With a soft mewl of concern, she nestled up beside them and bumped her head against their arm gently in very cat-like affection. "W-what's the matter, Zigari?" she asked softly through the quiet rumbling of a purr.

Zigari tensed the moment they felt the mattress dip under Callie’s weight. They hoped that she would go away — just let them lay there, curled up and sulking. Those wishes weren’t granted, however, and instead she snuggled up close to them and even nuzzled their arm. When the question, that Zigi knew was coming, they closed their eyes and sighed. “Would you believe me if I told you nothing was wrong?” Zigi maneuvered, turning until they were on their back but still had Callie snuggled up next to them. “It’s this stupid assignment. I don’t wanna do it.” Zigari’s tail twitched unhappily at the thought as they stared up at the ceiling.

Callie could feel Zigari teasing up as she neared them, but maybe she had surprised the naga. Or that's at least what she was trying to convince herself of, anyways, not wanting to be another problem on top of what was already there. The sigh made the neko's ear perk as she knew that meant something was going to be said, but the answer she got certainly wasn't believable. She shook her head side to side a couple times. "Nuh-uh." was said simply in reply. As her roommate readjusted their position, Callie wriggled closer, resting her head where she could see their face, but still be lazying down. Bit awkward, but she made it work! Her dark ears flickered and perked up once again as the naga's voice continued. Not want to write about family? "How come?" She was looking forward to writing about her grandpurrents, and what she knew of her purrents. It was so rude to pry, but she wanted to know what was troubling her friend -- plus there was that hint of natural curiosity at play as well. Came with the neko territory afterall.

Zigari frowned, their brows pinching together as they continued to stare at the ceiling. Though it looked like their focus was there, it was farthest from paying any attention to what lay above them. No. Zigari was trying to actually remember their parents. The memory was vague and it seemed to fade even more as time went by. “I...I don’t actually remember my parents too well,” Zigi said as they closed their eyes against the tears that threatened to well up — they would not cry. “And my life after them wasn’t exactly...the best…”

The silence from the other freshling made Callie shift her position. She sat herself up, staying as close as doing so would allow her, the corners of her mouth turning down in a frown and eyes turning to worry. Fluffy ears flickered here and there until the silence was broken once again. What was said by the naga was shocking to Callie, but at the same time it began to help her make sense of some things. Of course, she saw the way Zigair's face looked as they tried so hard not to cry, knowing it all too well herself. But it truly made the neko's heart ache to hear that her friend had such a troubling time after. Though there was a high chance of being pushed aside or wriggled away from, the neko laid back down, nestling up as close as she could to her friend and resting her cheek on their chest above their heart where she could hear it beating. "What... happened?" she had inquired after a slight hesitation.

Zigari kept their eyes closed and remained silent for a while, even after Callie’s question. Were they ready to talk about these things to another person? Hell, Zigi wasn’t even sure they could write about it. But this was Callie and she’d been nothing but nice to them since Zigi had arrived and been shoved onto her as a roommate. She had even stood up to a bully, that was larger than either of them, for Zigari. Sighing, Zigi opened their eyes and glanced towards Callie. “My two moms and father all died in an accident. I...don’t really remember the details anymore. I doubt I was told everything anyway — I was so young. But...I didn’t have any other family to take me in.” Zigari bit their lip, eyes flicking away from the neko before continuing the explanation. “I was put into the system — moved from home to home. There were some good foster homes but they were rare. The last one was...bad.” The last word was said on a shudder as Zigari reached one of their hands up to rub at their now closed eyes. “I suppose they did one right thing by leaving me here at the academy. At least now I have a chance to survive.”

Callie kept silent after she had asked. She feared that she had over-stepped her boundaries of what Zigari would tolerate, and even became slightly nervous that she was about to lose her only friend because of it! Her little fingers gripped at the naga's sweater right below her chin, and she nestled as close as she could. This was almost a form of comfort and maybe a bit of a blockade. The sigh brought her attention back from her worries, ears flicking slightly as Zigari began to talk. Her heart broke in two as they told her about their parents. About not remembering them. And what's worse, the fact they hadn't had family to love them and keep them safe after such a tragic thing happening to such a young child! Her eyes stung with tears and she sniffled. Though, the thing that surprised her more than not being pushed away or the fact they actually talked about their past, was the positive note at the end that they had said. Even though she was so sad for her friend and tears were sliding down her cheeks -- and consequently onto Zigi's shirt -- she shifted and peered up at them again. "I'm glad you're here with me. I'm sorry you got hurt, though... I w-wish i could take it away for you."

The neko gave a soft purr and affectionately nuzzled before the naga's chin. "My purrents are gone, too." she offered in reply, softly. Callie took in a deep breath and let it out slowly as she closed her eyes, just laying there and listening to the dancing of her friends heart beneath their chest for as long as they'd allow her to stay close.

Zigari frowned as they noticed the tears falling from Callie’s eyes. “Please...don’t cry…” They had not had someone cry over them before and it felt completely strange. A foreign concept they weren’t sure they were ready to fully embrace. Taking a deep breath, Zigi let it out slowly as they reached up to pet over Callie’s hair. “I’m sorry if I’ve ever seemed a little...rough or unfriendly. It’s...very hard for me to trust anyone.” They remained quiet for a little bit as Zigi ran their fingers through Callie’s hair gently. “I’m sorry you lost your parents too…”

The way that Zigari had asked her not to cry for them was a little strange to the kitten. Then again, she was an emotional sort compared to the naga. Or anyone for that matter. The movement of her friend's arm made her curious all the same, teary eyes trying to peer up as she found their fingers gently stroking her hair. This elicited more purring from her in return, though it didn't quite stop the tears just yet. "I'm... I'm just sad for my friend." Her little fingers curled up beneath the material of her sleeve and she sniffled as she tried to wipe the tears away. Of course, the apology and sympathetic response made it hard for her to stop. She did her best all the same, nibbling on her lip as she tried to fight back more tears. "It's okay, Zigari... You are who you are. I like you that way. Though, I do like that I'm getting snuggles and pets right now~" she said with a happier tone in her voice and a soft giggle. Closing her eyes again as she continued to purr and cuddle up close, she whispered a soft thank you.
