Destiny City wasn't an awful place, but Evan only had so much love for it, and as soon as the sun went down, his affection left with it. He'd been through this ritual before—pack up stuff from work, wait to see if anyone could pick him up, give up waiting for a text, reject alternative vehicular transportation, give up and walk home.

He'd worked out, a long time ago, the fastest way to get home. And the safest route.

The two were not the same, but sacrifices had to be made.

Evan wasn't feeling brave, but tonight he took the fastest route; he'd had a bad day and just wanted to be home and sleep.

But things could always get worse, and his bad day got worse when he caught the attention of a youma.

It wasn't his first, but it didn't make them any easier to deal with. This one was larger than the ones he usually ran into; it looked like a pig with very tiny legs and three swishing tails—and a mouth that looked more like a crocodile's than a farm animal's.

So Evan took advantage of its short legs and bolted.

Which was a good plan—never mind that it was doing a good job keeping up, but he managed to weave down a few alleys. And it was going great and all until he turned a corner and slammed into something.

Aegir was having an eventful night, he'd managed to stop a mugging (non Negaverse related), dusted one youma, and now? Now he'd started on an approach to another chaos-based energy signature - not an officer, not a senshi, but another of the monsters. So he would take care of that and then make his way home for the evening. He'd mostly recovered from the Portal Debacle and had been working his way back up to full speed, but this was pushing it a little bit.

Too bad he wasn't the sort to back down when there was something he could do.

And that, is how he found himself closing in on his 'target'. Or rather, how he found himself running smack into a civilian that was running away from something. Likely the youma he'd sensed. The eternal senshi staggered back a little, falling against a concrete wall from the dispersed momentum of the civilian's flight with a little 'oof', one arm automatically reaching around to catch the man.

"Hey--" Well damn, there it is. Aegir pushed from the wall, still holding Evan, and without ceremony scooped him up. "Hold on." That was all the warning he could give before launching them both backwards about twenty feet and landing; he had to retreat briefly so that he could put space between Evan and the porcine-ish monster. Is it just me, or are these things getting weirder and weirder looking?

"Stay behind me. Or run. That'd also be a good idea." The monster had some rather nasty looking teeth - it was far, far more dangerous than the last thing he'd fought - and he didn't want to end up on the wrong side of them. Maybe it wasn't necessary, but Aegir brought out the big guns because he wanted to finish this quickly and really didn't feel like playing hangman with a bitey youma.

"Soundless Tranquil Ocean! The casting took very little time and Aegir had the satisfaction of knowing that even if he had to bash it's stupid little head in, the magic would help speed things up. But boy, he was tired after it, he'd been expending a lot of energy while still somewhat weakened. Next time I'm not flying a youma-kite. Bad idea. C'mon you stupid thing, just die already!

I hope this is alright, let me know if I should change anything - you can also assume/write his stomping the s**t out of it if necessary :> I leave that to you for storytelling~

Attack deets: Multi-enemy non-directional zone-based field attack; Instead of 'ropes' a wash of energy floods over the enemies, knocking them down and then going more rope-like, coiling around their limbs to hold them still/silent for a length of time. As an added 'joy' the attack - in the initial stage (the flood) - has a chance of drowning (knocking out) the enemy.

Evan went from very pale to very red in a matter of seconds; he was not used to being scooped up, apparently, and did not know what to make of the sudden closeness to a stranger.

A stranger who had, to be fair, saved his life just by showing up and planting himself between Evan and the threat. When given the option to stay behind him or run…

Running was Evan's obvious choice, but he was already out of breath. Being off his legs for a moment meant that only now he realized how sore they were. It didn't help that his lungs were burning and a black cloud was fogging up his vision. He nodded, without really understanding what was going on or what was being said.

He hadn't witnessed magic like Aegir's and it left him seeing stars.

Stars, and no youma; once he managed to blink his eyes into clarify and tried to focus on where the youma had last been—charging right at them—there was nothing.

In fact, except for the senshi in front of him, nothing seemed to be moving.

He didn't know what had happened; he hadn't been looking. He hadn't seen the way the flood washed over the youma, or the way it thrashed so viciously against the coiling energy. Or the way the magic seemed to burn it.

The way it had, with one hideous squeal, burst into dust.

The only sound Evan could hear was his heart pounding in his chest and his own ragged breathing. He slumped against the wall and looked at the back of the senshi who had saved him. "Thanks," he rasped, getting the easy part out of the way. "…Wait—it's gone, right?"

His energy picked up just for a second, rekindled by fear. "—You got it, for real? And you're okay? We're not dead?"

With the monster dusted, Aegir could hold his left arm against his aching middle - nothing had been overly strained, but he was hurting some and knew he'd pay for all this action in the morning. Thank god neither Thraen, Van or Hver saw this, they'd have my a**. The senshi let out a long sigh as he turned to face Evan, a warm smile crossing his face at the questions - and concern.

"It's gone. Dusted, actually." He gestured to a rapidly disappearing pile of ash near his feet, some mystical wind coming to take it away (as per usual). "And you're welcome."

Moving slowly closer to Evan, the senshi offered his free hand while trying to ignore the question about how 'okay' he was; his injuries were none of this person's concern and came from older, more desperate battles. "Definitely not dead. I'm called Aegir, by the way."

"How did you manage to find that youma? Bad luck, I'd guess."

Evan nodded, seeming a little stunned still. He was out of it, but had the mind to offer a mumbled word of thanks before he accepted the hand and pulled himself up. "It's always bad luck. All the time, they're everywhere. I don't know why the news isn't covering any of that—you'd think they'd warn people, or have more police out to take care of them. That's like."

He fell quiet for a second, brows furrowed, as he tried to figure out just how many he'd run into.

He gave up and shook his head. "…I don't even know how many. But it's not the first one—and you aren't the first person who I'm pretty sure I owe my life to. Uhm. I'm Evan," he said, giving a quick, awkward shake to the hand he'd just used to pull himself up. "I…I can't thank you enough, uhm. Aegir. I don't know how I can repay you."

Poor guy, he's pretty rattled...can't say I blame him. Destiny City is a lot to take in. "Well, the local media just...ignores it? Not really sure, it could be some sort of glamour magic, keeping everyone from banding together and doing something about it." Unfortunately, Aegir just didn't know why the police and people weren't talking more about the monsters, the 'missing' people...the lifeless bodies, empty husks without the glittering starseed within their breast.

"It's nice to meet you, Evan. Sorry about the monsters..basically I'm what you get, instead of police. People like me." The guy was a bit awkward, but seemed nice - too nice to deserve to be running into youma all the time (Aegir was of the opinion that most of Destiny City's residents were 'too nice' to deserve the war going on around their ears).

Green eyes widened at the mention of repayment, and he recollected his hand so both could be put up in a supplicating gesture, "No no, you don't need to repay me at all. This is...well," He pushed a gloved hand up through the curls sticking to his forehead, "It's kind of my job."

"I mean, I like helping people...and since I'm all magicked up..." Aegir smiled, the sort of warm smile that crinkled the corner of one's eyes - that couldn't be faked. "Do you want me to walk you home? 'Cause there's no telling what's out tonight." Actually, he could feel it, creeping along the edges of his awareness - Chaos.

Evan gave the guy a quick look over, as if questioning the validity of his statement based on whatever ridiculous magical getup he got stuck with. "…I know it's not a job," he said, suddenly. "You get paid for a job. You're kind of just. Volunteering and not really getting any compensation. Doesn't matter if you like helping people or not, you're still putting your life on the line and not really getting anything out of it. I'm not gonna be just dead weight. And I'm not totally useless," he insisted, but his determination seemed more geared towards himself than Aegir.

A part of him was also buying time; he was of two minds on the matter of being walked home. He didn't like people knowing where he lived, but more than that he didn't like walking home alone. Not when he was still light headed enough he felt like he could pass out.

Reluctantly, he nodded in the direction he intended to head off in. "…If you want to walk me a bit of the way, I wouldn't complain. But only if I can convince you to at least consider some sort of payment. Like—I can pay in food! I mean. Everyone needs to eat. And I cook pretty well. So if you're in the area, I'll make you something. To go, so I'm not holding you up from all your saving people, superhero business. And what-not."

Evan's reaction was not one that Aegir could have anticipated; most civilians being put face-to-face with monsters and senshi reacted with fear and disbelief...not sharp statements or questions. Two golden brows arched with surprise, "Well, technically you're correct...but I feel like it's my duty to protect people, so for me..." It's a job...and one that affects my civilian job too. But it's okay, clearly he's got some strong feelings. Aegir's expression wasn't unkind, more curious and and interested - Evan was a character and the blond couldn't help wanting to learn more about his new friend.

The hesitation was noticed - people could be very paranoid in Destiny City, the senshi understood this well and waited until Evan had given his answer - and a condition. Evan's condition made him laugh, bright and warm and he raised his hands, giving in even as he started off in the direction his companion indicated. "Alright, alright. I'm a vegetarian though, so it won't be as easy as you think." Ah, but how would he get in contact with Evan to let him know he'd be around?

"Tell you what, how about we make it a date?"

The word 'date' made Evan turn back to look at Aegir, one brow raised, but he just shrugged and nodded. He looked relieved that he hadn't had to put up any sort of argument, but was quick to assure, "Cooking for vegetarians is easy. You don't have to keep checking the meat to make sure it's the perfect temperature. I know a really good chili recipe. But I guess that's no good in summer—but, soups, casseroles, pies, you name it, I can make it. So if you want anything, you should drop by—let me get the address."

He fished around in his pocket for a moment while they walked and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. A moment later, a pen followed. He tore the paper in half, apparently keen on keeping whatever notes he'd jotted for himself at the top, but after scribbling the address to the bar he worked at on the paper, he turned and handed it to the Senshi.

"There's a phone number on there, too. I work most nights, but if you want something you can call and ask if I'm there and if I can take your order. I've got a good system—you call, I take your order, I cook. You meet me in back so we don't have to answer any weird questions. If you're cool with that. Just give me some heads up and I'll make something. It's the least I can do," he said, and sounded insistent still.

Evan was tired, worn thing and adrenaline fading. The sooner he got home, the better, but he wasn't one who was going to let some stranger rescue him and then not try his hardest to let him know how grateful he was.

Aegir wondered why Evan gave him that brow-quirked look, but didn't think on it too long once it seemed the other had decided to stop sending that expression his way. It was far more interesting to listen as Evan talked about cooking, about the things that he could make happen - was willing to make happen - as recompense for being saved. Still don't think it's necessary, but if it makes him happy to do it...who'm I to say no? He seems really kind, too.

"Chili's good anytime, especially good chili." With a chuckle, Aegir accepted the scribbled on curl of paper, looking over it perfunctorily before tucking it into his costume jacket; he could take it back out before he powered down, but it would probably be safe where it was until then. Not like he could lose this jacket or anything. "Thank you."

Anything that he might have said was swallowed as Evan went further into how he wanted their interaction to go; really, it was reasonable and sensible - it wasn't as though he could easily walk into a bar (or much of anywhere, for that matter) fully powered up and not expect a lot of weird looks or questions. "It sounds like a good plan, I agree." Aegir laughed a bit, "I'm not exactly inconspicuous like this." With how adamant the dark haired young man was, the senshi just accepted that this was going to happen and moved on without resistance. Really, it was nice to be appreciated.

"If you're having trouble, I could carry you. Being a superhero comes with perks, you know." He was pretty sure Evan wouldn't accept, but they'd been working steadily towards where he assumed the guy's place of residence was, so maybe it wouldn't be necessary. Aegir might've made the offer - and certainly would have acted on it - but that didn't necessarily mean he wasn't going to fall into bed as soon as possible himself!

Evan’s mouth snapped shut when Aegir offered to carry him, and while he did a good job keeping his face impassive, he was unable to hide the red that tinged his cheeks and ears. He opened his mouth with a dozen different excuses for why he shouldn’t accept and wound up stumbling over his words. Embarrassed still, he managed to clear his throat and say, “I’m okay, thank you. You’ve honestly done enough for me, I feel bad for keeping you as long as I have. I’m really just right over there,” he gestured.

“I think...I can manage on my own.”

There was uncertainty, and fear, but he was persistent--or, at least, trying to regain some pride.

“I mean--there’s not any more monsters or anything nearby, right? I can just hurry home if the coast is clear,” he insisted, almost sounding like he wasn’t still worried about all the human threats that he knew lurked in the night.

Sounds good to me!

Honestly, Evan was quite the character - the sort of steadily stubborn guy that didn't want to reach out for assistance if he could help it. Aegir empathized, he'd felt that way when he'd been desperately low and trying to do everything on his own - and failing. It had literally taking Hver tattling on him to Quenton and his friend basically moving in for a month to force him to stop with "the stupid" as Quenton had called it. He wasn't certain that Evan was quite as bad as needing all of that, but he was certainly well on the path of "too stubborn to be smart, too smart to show that much stupid".

"I told you, it's no problem. I like doing it." Aegir was smiling again, teeth and fuku bright in the darkness, as though both took in the moonlight and amplified it.

He closed his eyes a moment, to give his senses his full attention - there were monsters out, but nothing nearby - and then it was gone, either dusted or returning to it's masters to hand over an ill-gotten prize. "No, there aren't any dangerous signatures near here, you should be completely safe to go it alone if that's what you want."

Even if Evan wanted, Aegir wasn't going to leave him - bounce out of his range of sight, yes. Out of an area the senshi of silence could easily reach him from, no. "And don't worry, if there were monsters or anything, I'd just go take care of it. You really are safe now." Safe enough that Aegir could bow out and bounce as he meant to after offering a gloved hand for Evan to shake before he 'disappeared' to discretely sit on an apartment rooftop and wait fifteen minutes before going home himself.

Evan debated for a long moment and then slowly nodded. "I should probably go alone," he said. "Not that I don't appreciate everything, but...something about showing really powerful strangers over to where you live...If you were a robber or something, you'd know which house was the easiest target."

It might have been a joke; Evan seemed like he was a little flippant in that moment, but there might have been a bit of truth to his words.

If you couldn't tell the good from the bad, it was best to stay away from all of them--though, Evan was pretty sure Aegir couldn't be bad if he'd been willing to rescue him.

Evan just didn't want to be wrong.

"If it's safe, I'll just go fast." He seemed contemplative for just a moment and then shook his head. Sounding slightly more enthusiastic, he said, "Thank you. For this and, I guess, for everything you do. Be safe. Please."

Because, even if Aegir was some superpowered magical person, bad things could happen to anyone. Evan waved and then turned quickly, deciding he needed to leave while he still had the nerve to do so. It was too tempting to let someone walk him home, but if Zack saw, he'd have to answer some awkward questions.

When he turned to leave, he didn't look back; he just pushed himself forward and went straight home.
