Newgrange had been cautious in the past few weeks; he wasn't looking for trouble, but he was determined not to feel like a deadweight and do nothing. He had an obligation, and it clung to him almost as strongly as a guilty conscience.
So, tired, he'd set about doing a basic patrol. If he found a youma or two to take care of, he'd have counted it as a good night. If he'd found no one, it would have been a better one.
Instead, he found a Captain.
The tingle of her energy signature was on his radar for a while and he'd skirted it, but it seemed like every direction he went in, he was still at least faintly aware of her. He hadn't been running, but he'd have had a difficult time claiming he hadn't been avoiding her. He kept his path as far away from hers until he couldn't stand it anymore.
He didn't mean to seek her out, but he wound up closer to the energy signature all the same. He wasn't feeling brave, or confident, just exasperated, and looking for an excuse to say he did something for tonight so he could go home.
He wasn't as good of a Knight as he wanted to be, but avoiding the problem wasn't going to make him any better.

Moonstone walked the streets, alleys, rooftops, and tree limbs of Destiny City with a surety that spoke of long practice and the knowledge that there was little she would not be capable of handling; though she had risen quickly from basic ranks, she been a captain of the Negaverse for many years and had not progressed further. Even knowing that there were Eternals and Knights roaming around did not give her pause - they were stronger, but she had Wasgo - and if she truly needed it, she had her communicator and could call for back-up.
So when she felt the irritating slide of an order signature grating across her senses, she merely smiled to herself and slowly changed her route in a lazy game of cat-and-mouse that assured her prey there was little point in avoiding contact. There is no escape, come. Meet your destiny face to face. I should like that very much, little mouse.
Finally - finally - the order aura came closer. Moonstone's teeth gleamed in the low light; the dance was over. Rather than drawing their little flirtation out longer, the Captain sought her prey quickly, braid and leather-fringed coattail flaring out behind her like a banner until she was close enough to see the little mouse. Not a senshi, then. One of the knights, poor misguided creature...tsk tsk tsk.
Dressed like Robin Hood of old in leaf greens and rich, earthy browns. Earth Knight, then. Yes, she knew. She paid attention - having served under Zinkenite in intelligence for some time, Moonstone could mostly identify some of the different knight types. The symbols and colours give you away, little mouse...or are you a fox? Sly and cowardly? We shall see, oh yes~
"Hello little mouse." Stepping out from the shadows some distance before Newgrange, the captain waited for him to register the threat inherent before flashing a hard, predatory smile his way. "You kept me waiting."

Newgrange's eyes flashed when the Captain stepped out, and while he was ordinarily friendly enough, there was something about her smile that unnerved him.
"I didn't think you wanted to be found. You were doing a pretty good job of hiding in the shadows," he said slowly.
Assessing her quickly yielded little information about the agent in front of him, but it only meant that he was going to treat her cautiously. She had a predator's gaze, and had called him mouse; she didn't see him as a threat and he didn't see any reason why he shouldn’t think she was dangerous.
They might have been the same power level, but he looked at her and saw a threat.
Probably not what she saw when she looked at him.
"…What were you waiting for?"

Had she been hiding? Moonstone wouldn't have called it that...more like, she'd been waiting for prey to find her, but arguing semantics with an Earth knight didn't sound like something worth doing right then, so she simply chuckled and gave him a bit of a wink. "Nothing like an air of mystery to keep things interesting."
Newgrange's question widened Moonstone's smile - oh, the poor boy. He had no idea.
"Someone to play with." Weapon summoned into hand, heavy and bright with intricate carvings. "Tell me, little mouse...will you play with me?" Innocuous, playful words spoken in the same dulcet tones a serial killer might use - which wasn't really too far off, considering the dark-eyed captain. "I'm so very....bored." A hard edge came into the woman's tone on the last word, implying that boredom was likely one of the worst things that could happen - not to her, but to him.

Newgrange's eyes flicked to the weapon in her hand and he stood a little more rigid. The thought of battle was not relaxing, or fun. His jaw clenched and he was already scanning the area to see if there was a clear way out.
"I can't really say I'm much in the mood for games, sorry. I haven't got much time to play."
It wasn't just her words that were unsettling—it was how she said them. In fact, it was everything.
"Besides," he eyed her weapon once more. "That doesn't really look very fun, I'm sorry."
He had taken a semi-defensive stance, but he was still thinking escape was the best option. His weapon—if it could even be called that—a glove, offered little in the way of offense or defense. He had magic, but wasn't yet very skilled with it. Still, it might have been a distraction enough to buy him the time he needed to run, if he couldn’t talk his way out of this.
…He was pretty sure talking wasn't really going to be an option, though.

The way his eyes seemed to caress her weapon sent the most delicious frisson along Moonstone's spine; his body language said she had his full attention - undivided, unwavering. Perfect. "Pity." Not that it matters, little mouse. Little Earth Mouse...you and I are going to have a good time...a very good time, up close. "Ah, but you have such lovely manners...will you keep them, when your bones break, shatter?"
With an economy of motion that Moonstone only held near the starts of her battles, before the blood-lust sang it's song in her veins and blotted out everything but the need to strike and destroy, she started at Newgrange. She was fast, but not as much as she could have been - this was a test: the Haida Captain had invited him to play, and play was precisely what she would do with him.
"Oh little mouse, how right you are--" Drawing closer, Moonstone swung with her bat, barely aiming. How good are your reflexes, mousie mousie?

While there was a bit of alarm in Newgrange's eyes, all of this had been building up to a battle anyway, hadn't it? She hadn't ever seemed like she would have been satisfied with discussion. He moved to the side quickly, unwilling to admit that her bat had grazed his arm anyway. He had misjudged it's size and while he suspected he'd bruise, he didn't let any pain register on his face.
He had the distinct feeling that weakness would have only driven her to strike harder.
Instead, he dropped to the ground quickly, slamming his fist into the ground and channelling his magic as best he could. The ground trembled below his fist; an earthquake, centralized around them, rocked the area they were standing on. Low to the ground and prepared, Newgrange was stabilized; he just needed to get Moonstone off balance and then he could high-tail it out of here.
...Ideally.
