Hyperborea had run into one of the stronger youma prowling the streets of destiny city. The overly large black snake like monster had given her some problems, it even managed to sink it's fangs into her shoulder at one point.

After prying it off of her she was eventually able to beat it down and pin it under her heal. She summoned her staff in her good hand and drove the golden star head into the writhing youma beneath her leaving nothing but dust. She grimaced as her shoulder wound stung, blood dribbled down her arm.

It was then that her senses alerted her to presence of someone in the area, someone without an aura. She turned around to see a man in a cop's uniform there.

She wasn't a big fan of the police, it was a combination of things really. They tended to ask questions she didn't care to answer. They interrupted her patrol needlessly. And she was still a rather bitter and disillusioned towards them for how her parents murder was handled.

"May I help you officer?" She asked politely putting on a pleasant smile even as blood dripped from her shoulder.

Hyperborea was not the first strange, colorfully dressed individual he'd ever met, nor was that the first rabid animal thing—or whatever—that he'd seen crushed into a puff of dust.

Seeing a kid in a costume was a lot more understandable than an adult, but he still had his gun out, trained on her. Well—now that the monster was gone, it was trained on her.

She didn't need to know that he still had the safety on; he wasn't interested in shooting what looked like some kid who was just out past curfew—but the gangs were into some weird stuff and he didn't want to get caught in the middle.

"Move slowly," he cautioned. "And put the staff down."

…Staff, or whatever that thing was. He recognized a weapon, no matter what the name, and she'd seen her beat that thing into nothingness with it.

He added a question before he gave her a chance to comply: "What's a kid like you doing out so late? You could be getting a lot of trouble. Your parents are not gonna be happy when I have to drag you home, you know that, right?"

She shrugged and dispelled her staff. "There feel better?" She was annoyed, she didn't like having a gun pointed at her. However she didn't think she was in any real danger, even if this cop did fire on her she was so fast she figured she could get out of the way and she knew she could easily get away from him with Cerynitis.

She raised an eyebrow. "Did you not see what I was just fighting?" She let out a sigh, she might as well try to explain. Taking a second to tear away a piece of her cloak to wrap around her wound and stop the bleeding. "I'm hunting monsters, youma like that snake. I'm protecting the people of the city."

His next comment hit a sore spot. "Yeah well my parents are dead, and as for dragging me home no you're not I have more work to do." She said it as a fact, this cop didn't the strength to restrain her.

"Do you cops even realize what lurks in the shadows in this city, the dangers out here, the powers at play?"

Jeremy didn't like the conversation and it immediately showed on his face. He kept the gun trained on her, but lowered it a bit.

It just didn't feel right aiming it at some kid, no matter how bratty.

"I'll forgive the cop comment because you're a kid, and I know kids say the dumbest s**t. Especially when they feel the need to combat authority figures. This ain't my first night out, so you oughta know I've seen plenty of dangers in these shadows. More than you, probably, but let's not make this a competition. The difference is, I got a badge, and you look like you should be in bed by now. So make this easy on me—and you, okay?"

His jaw was firm, but he did not seem particularly unkind. He was just a man with a job, trying to figure out how you respond to some kid who says she's an orphan.

"Sorry to hear about your parents," he replied, not overly sympathetic, but with enough truth that it sounded real.

She wasn't the first person in this city to lose her parents, and she wouldn’t be the last.

If what she was saying was even true.

"Who are you staying with? They got you with somebody good? 'Cause if they're lettin' you stay out this late, we're gonna have a problem. It's not safe for civilians to be out here fighting—what, fighting monsters. You oughta be home, safe."

Hyperborea let out a sigh, her face softening a little. "Look I'm sure you've faced many dangerous people like muggers or what not but those are not the kind of dangers I'm talking about. There is a war going on in this city, a war between order and chaos. The youma I was fighting, or monster or demon if you'd prefer, that was a servant to chaos, if I hadn't dusted it it would have slaughter innocent people." She would try to get the officer to understand.

"I am too, but no amount of sorries will ever bring them back." She said, a tone of hurt in her voice.

"To answer your question the Crystal dorms, and I sneak out." She answered honestly figuring there was nothing he could really do with information he didn't have her name or know what she even looked like as a civilian.

"I'm not a civilian if you couldn't tell from the glowing. I am a knight, a transcendent knight of the Cosmos to be exact, my name is Hyperborea. It is my duty to hunt down those monsters and slay them and to stop their masters from harming innocent people like you. I have magic and enhanced strength and speed." She explained. "As for being home safe, I could not just stay in my bed when people are being slaughtered or worse and I have the power to prevent it."

Jeremy was quiet for a moment, watching solemnly. He wore an understanding expression, and for a long moment seemed like he absolutely believed her.

And then he sighed and shook his head.

"I'm gonna have to send another complaint to Crystal about letting you girls sneak out. I don't know if you're taking something, or if you're just seriously into LARPing, but I'm gonna need you to level with me, okay?"

He was watching her carefully but lowered his gun entirely, letting it hang by his side. "There's a lot of wars going on in Destiny City. War on crime, war on poverty, war on hunger, war on drugs, war on terror—you got gang war, hate wars—you know, the list doesn't end. And I'm shoulder deep in all of it, so let's not pretend like the worst I've seen are muggers."

He was eying her outfit—particularly the glowing bit, but Jeremy was in perpetual denial of magic. Probably some fiber optic, or glow in the dark makeup—or hell, maybe she'd smeared glowsticks all over herself. She was spouting a lot of nonsense, but he'd been to the theater enough to know that there were a lot of weird performances, and costumes were easy to make.

But she wasn't acting all drugged or drunk. She did sound a little crazy, though. Or like a kid pulling a prank.

"So how about you let me handle keeping the city safe, and you head back to Crystal and worry about keeping your future safe, all right? You got a lotta spark in you, you should focus on putting that to good use. If you're worried about keeping safe, why don't you get involved with the community? They've got some clean up programs. Volunteer at an animal shelter. —We've got a student program with the police office, get you involved early and you can sign up right after high school. I mean," he shrugged, "If that's your cup of tea. But if you get arrested for hooliganism and vigilantism it's gonna mess up your chances of getting a good career."

Hyperborea felt a blush creep to her face. How dare he suggest she was just some LARPer. She was out here nearly every night risking her life to try to protect people from the Negaverse and he suggests shes just playing around or even worse just drugged out. She had already lost so much to this war and she had sacrificed so much for the fight she deserved a bit more respect than that. She was a proud knight of Cosmos not some crazed role player.

"But I'm glowing and you just saw me beat a weird snake into literal dust plus I made a staff disappear into thin air. Isn't that all proof enough I'm telling you the truth." She let out a sigh of defeat, she couldn't make him believe her. Maybe if she could take him to Hyperborea but she had just been there the other night and it was too soon to go back. Still she could at least put the information in the back of his mind, it might save his life and while he was frustrating her he still seemed like a good guy and she didn't want something bad to happen to him because he was ignorant of the dangers.

"Look that's fair but what I'm talking about is much worse than those things. The people I fight they can teleport and steal your soul in an instant, they have deadly weapons and superior strength to normal people plus they can summon monsters like what I just fought. Please, I'm honestly begging you, if you see someone dressed weird like me but in black instead of white do not threaten them. Don't try to arrest or talk to them, most of the more powerful ones aren't going to be afraid of your gun and some of them would delight in killing you or worse. Please if you see someone like that get away from them quickly." She earnestly pleaded with the cop hopping maybe if he did encounter a Negaverse officer her warning would stick in his head. Sure he could probably frighten a lieutenant into surrender and maybe even a captain but a general would probably just laugh at his gun and then have their way with him.

"Look all of those things are great and I do try to help out with that stuff when I can and who knows maybe I will join that police program but that does not take the place of what I need to do at night. Even if it is vigilantism I have to keep fighting until this war is over, all the truly awful things in this city, the terrorists attacks, the many disappearances and unexplained deaths that's because of them. If people like me don't keep fighting then they can have their way here and that would mean terrible things for everyone." She said resolutely, besides she could hardly have charges pressed against her when she was Hyperborea, they didn't have her real name or her real face or anything really.

Jeremy seemed gruff, but reached up to rub at the back of his neck. He was exasperated, that much was clear, and shook his head. "Kid," he said again, "The nice thing to say to a cop is, 'Yes, Sir, I'll head home right now' and let that be the end of it. Now, I get it. I was your age once, lived in a shitty neighborhood. You go out, you think you can do some good. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. But I'm not gonna stop doing my job just because you think it's in my best interest. If I was afraid of a little danger, I'd have a desk job."

He seemed like he was brushing off much of what she said, but the truth was that she had said things that struck a chord in him. But Jeremy was a good liar, and was even better at wearing a mask. He'd been keeping his thoughts to himself since long before he joined the police force, and it was hard to rattle him.

He'd heard the ramblings of the senile, of drugged up addicts, of sick people off their medications, of desperate criminals.

But this girl wasn't like any of them, and while it was reassuring that she was in good health and her right mind, it just made the truth that much worse.

"If someone's in trouble, I'm going to take care of it." There was no doubt, no hesitation; it was a promise. "I'm not going to back off just because someone's got some fancy skill or weapon. So don't give me this 'magical mumbo jumbo'. I'm gonna do my job, just like I'm doing now. Which means, when I head back to my car, I won't drag you with me and drop you off at Crystal myself if you promise to head straight back to the dorms. Got it?"

Hyperborea's face fell a little, he wouldn't listen but she could hardly argue those were almost her exact words. How many times had someone like Babylon or Camelot told her to avoid a dangerous situation and how many times had she ignored them for the sake of the greater good.

"Alright if that's what you want to hear then 'I'll head home right now'." She said as she summoned her war horn and willed her magic into it calling Cerynitis to her side. The ethereal white doe with her golden antlers and bronze hooves appeared out of no where. Bright purple eyes were carefully trained on the officer as if they were trying to determine if he was threat.

Hyperborea hefted herself onto the doe's back. "Stay safe officer, and may the stars light your path." She said before urging Cerynitis forward who broke into a sprint far faster than any natural creature as she moved like the wind. Although the pair were headed in the opposite direction of Crystal, the night was still young after all and there was still more work to be done.

Jeremy squinted as the girl pulled a Horn out of…somewhere. He was glad hse hadn't had some weapon and decided to pull it on him or he'd have totally missed it. He lingered for a few seconds, watching after the girl.

He'd missed something, clearly, because he'd thought he'd seen some sort of ghost deer.

Which was ridiculous and totally inhuman and just plain not normal. Even when there was no one left around, he lingered in the area—and then had to shake himself out of his stupor and force himself to head back to his car.

He nagged at himself; obviously he wasn't getting enough sleep and was seeing things. Stress of the job was causing him to wig out. He hadn't eaten in hours and was getting delusional.

There were a lot of excuses he could come up with, but he knew they were all wrong.

He was lying to himself every time he told himself there wasn't something strange going on in this City.

Jeremy couldn't stand lies, so all he could do was deal with it and do his job.
