Dexurn was relaxing after a long day of training with his shield. Perhaps relaxing a little too well. He was finishing his second hard drink, and the lightweight was feeling pretty good. Good enough to do something out of the ordinary; talk to strangers!
He overheard the pair next to him discussing the Yeal situation and the animals being brought to the main land. That was the perfect opportunity to boast how he'd caught a tintural all on his own. He made it seem like a grand battle, quite proud of himself for capturing such a strange and foreign creature.

Ah -- Matori.
He’d needed this, he realized. For a guy who’d grown up roaming around the jungle, a ‘vacation’ seemed like a strange idea… until you found yourself in a sea-side bar surrounded by pretty blue water-earthlings, drinking some exotic drinks and showboating for the locals. Then, it made perfect sense. The last little while had been tough, anyway. He’d had to come to terms with some pretty heavy stuff, and some of that heavy stuff was warmed with pointy daggers. He was scratched up, stressed out, and still a little surprised at the result of all this mess.
So Matori was a good place to be. And drunk was a good way to be there.
He was listening, with not-inconsiderable interest, to a water earling with a shield resting by his legs, who was telling the group around him about one of those weird Yaeli beasts. Ouen had encountered one too, and hadn’t had nearly as much luck -- so he was impressed, to say the least.
Not everyone shared his opinion.
“Ha!” Another Matorian laughed. “I’ve seen those things! They’re slow as a rock. You’d have to be stupid not to be able catch one… and even more stupid to do it. It’s useless!”
Ouen, who was very well drunk by now, didn’t take kindly to this. He stood abruptly, his silver night-skin a stark contrast to the locals’ hue.
“Now listen ‘ere, mister. I’s don’t take too kindly to you insultin’ this fella ‘ere on no damn good account. You’s better apolgize, an’ you’s better do it real quick, you hear me? Or I’m gonna do an’ hurt ya for it, and that ain’t no empty threat like your talk.”

Dex looked over at the heckler with confusion, which quickly turned into embarrassment. Blue face turning violet, he stuttered out a few words to try regaining his momentum. He was no good with verbal confrontations though! He was ready to back away when someone came to his defense. Looking at the shifter with surprise, and encouraged by the supportive stranger, he looked over at the heckler again and pointed at the guy. "You're just sayin' that because you can't catch one yourself," he returned, twirling his pointed finger with a smirk.
One of the men next to the heckler stood up, just as drunk as anyone else there. "He's just fine doin' what he sayin'. Yous both got big mouths. Don't make us shut 'em fer ya."

The water earthling he was defending seemed, at first, to be less-than-enthusiastic about the whole matter. Still, once Ouen had done and stood up to face the man who had insulted him, the other gathered up his courage and responded with a solid comeback. Sure, it wasn’t anything particularly clever, but… well, it was a late night at a rowdy bar, and anything said with conviction sounded pretty damn convincing just about now.
It wasn’t convincing enough to encourage the heckler to back down, however -- and it looked like he had supporters in his camp.
Ouen narrowed his eyes at this new fellow (who was a big-ish guy, by all means, with broad shoulders and muscles well-used to some sort of work), then rolled his silvery eyes to make a show of his disdain.
“My mouth is sized just right to tell you an’ yours friends that they done and crossed the line. An’ if ‘t happens that I need a big one to make the matter loud an’ clear, well then I’ll gladly use what I got. An’ I don’t take kindly to threats, mister, no kinder than I take to insults. So now I’m expectin’ to hear some apologies from both of yous, or you’d best be sure y’can back that talk up with somethin’ a little more physical, y’hear?”

As the pair retaliated, Dex managed to not shrink back too much. Normally, he would already have his face in his drink again, turning away and keeping quiet. Having someone helping to defend him was a rush though, and he managed to remain standing. "Yeah! You apologize!"
The heckling man looked between the Matorian and the Shifter, snorting loudly. "I'd like ta see yous sticks make us," the man sneered, flexing his impressive muscles in an attempt of intimidation. "In fact, yous now owe us that apology, if'n ya don't want ta get a beat down."

“Naw, Mister.” Ouen sneered, flipping back silvery curls in a show of disdain. Even if he wasn’t drunk, he wouldn’t have fallen for this fellow’s show of muscle. He’d been in his fair share of fights already, and he knew that bulk didn’t count for everything. Ouen himself was tall and lean, but he had plenty of muscle packed tight to his arms and shoulders, and he wasn’t going to back down from one bellowing buffoon… or several.
“Naw, that ain’t how it works. You’s the one who offended my here friend -- “ Well, technically Ouen didn’t even know the water earthling's name, but that was a minor detail at the moment, “-- and you’s the one who’s gonna be apologizin’. An’ if that don’t click in yours thick head, then I can’t do nothin’ for you ‘cept beat it right in. Hm?”
Of course, the other man was both drunk and confident in his strength, and none of this talk seemed to be changing anyone’s mind around anything. Finally, the bartender (a tough-looking Matori woman) rolled her eyes and told them to go take it outside (well, away from her tables more like it, being that the bar was already outside), so that they wouldn’t continue disturbing her patrons (who, realistically, looked more entertained than disturbed) or breaking anything (this being a rather reasonable cause). Ouen drawled his acceptance and turned to head away from the golden pool of torchlight , towards the darkness of the surf away from the bar.
Their opponent, however, was not quite so patient… and, picking up a bottle in his hand, started charging towards Ouen’s retreating back.

Dex shifted uncertainly where he stood. Having someone supporting him helped, but he still wasn't much of a fighter. His gaze darted between his supporter and the rivals, jumping slightly when the bartender spoke up. Was this really turning into a real fight?
Cheeks flushed with embarrassment and alcohol, he picked up his shield and headed away from the bar. Seeing the large man make for a preemptive strike, Dex found himself charging forward. "H-hey!" He slammed into the man's back, stumbling backward himself after the impact. "Sorry!" he squeaked out, pushing himself back to his feet. "N-no sneakin' like that!"

Had Ouen been less drunk -- and the night-time surf less loud, and so on so forth -- he was sure he would have been able to hear the man coming at him. But, things being as they were, he didn’t have a clue about it until he heard a sharp “Sorry!” And the sound of a sharp “umph” followed by a “YOU LITTLE --”
The shifter whirled around, catching the sight of the big water earthling stumbling forward, a bottle falling out of his hand. The other water earthling -- the one that had been insulted to start with -- was standing behind him with a shield in hand. It didn’t take a genius to put the story together, and even drunk Ouen felt like he had a pretty good idea of what had occurred. He straightened, giving the man with the bottle a sour look before nodding at his ally.
“He’s right, you thievin’ sneak. You done started this, you done gone an’ handed out the challange, an’ now you’s tryin’ to get outta it with some dirty tricks? I should’ve know you wasn’t up to backin’ up your words with real action. Why don’tcha clear right out then? If you don’t got the guts for a fair fight, I ain’t got nothin’ to prove to the likes of you.”

The buff Matorian popped his neck a couple times before turning back to Ouen. "E'rybody plays a lil dirty. Way I sees it, I'd rather get that top hand before yous do sum'thin' fer it." Deciding they were far enough outside of the 'bar' area, he raised a hand to gesture back at the group he had been with. "Your 'real action' is on its way~"
Dex turned around to see where the man was waving to, and yelped when another man headed their way. Not quite as buff as the first, but still intimidating. "I don' wanna!" he squeaked out as his shield popped up to protect against the new fist swinging his way, wincing as it hit the weapon hard.

“Oooh boy.” Ouen laughed, tilting his head menacingly. “You don’t want me to play dirty. Trust me.”
His drunken conviction seemed to make the man falter, but… then again, all of them were pumped up on drunk courage at the same time (well, maybe not the man with the shield, but he seemed to be holding his ground all the same), and neither backed down. A second opponent rose from the bar, and charged at the shield-bearer with his bare hands. They fell solidly on the surface of the shield, but… well, it was a shield. It would take more than that to fell the water earthling, it was clear.
Ouen moved quickly to stand beside his ally, giving him an encouraging nod.
“C’mon! They’s just drunks. You ain’t gonna let ‘em call you a coward an’ get away with it, are you? Show em whatcha got.”
With that, he stepped out and grabbed the skinnier Matori brawler, pulling him off-balance and throwing him right at the other man’s shield, figuring the other would be able to knock him down now that he wasn’t prepared for it.

Backing away from the second attacker, who was shaking out a sore hand, Dex looked over as the shifter spoke. ...Actually, letting those men get away with it had exactly been the plan....
He bit his lip, looking at the shield he held. He wanted it to defend others, so what was wrong with using it to defend himself? With the shifter giving him such a clear shot as well... he just couldn't back down. With a less than warrior howl, he swung thew shield forward to slam it into the thrown man.

And just like that, it seemed like they were done with the talking. The guy with the shield didn’t look particularly happy about it, but Ouen wasn’t going to let that stop him -- not even if he was, technically, fighting on his behalf to begin with.
The skinny brawler fell backwards into the shield, and was pushed forward with a powerful thrust (uncertain or not, the shield-bearer certainly knew what he was doing). He was was now irredeemably off-balance, and Ouen took advantage of this to grab him by the shoulders and toss him into the sand off to the side. Just in time, too -- the big guy had regained his courage and was coming back at him. Ouen tried the same trick with him, but… well, he was bigger, and ready for it. He lashed out with a swinging fist and managed to hit Ouen on the shoulder -- then whirled around to try and pull the shield away from Dex.
Ouen didn’t like the looks of that, not one bit, and charged at the big guy with his bare hands, wrapping his arms around his neck and wrestling him backwards to the floor.
It was, all in all, a rather clumsy grapple… they were both quite drunk, and seemed to have trouble making proper sense of their own limbs.

Dex gave a sigh of relief as the man he hit stumbled forward. It was good to know he wasn't too terrible at this. It certainly did make him feel a little more confident.
All that confidence melted away as the big guy returned. Gripping the shield instinctively, he was yanked forward and ducked to avoid a swung fist.
Tumbling as his shield was released, he looked up to see his stranger pal grappling. Wincing slightly, he scrambled over to slam against the big guy's legs, wrapping his arms around them to restrain them.

Sand was flying everywhere! Ouen really had quite lost track of everything that was going on. It was dark out here, so dark that you couldn’t even tell the difference between the sky and the sea, so the whole world was just a whirling mess of sand and not-sand, and a sloppily violent kaleidoscope of arms and legs. Grappling was not exactly Ouen’s strong suit, and he felt the big water earthling getting the edge on him, pinning his back to the ground and leveraging his weight overtop to keep him in his place.
Then, abruptly, he was sliding away. The shield-bearer had joined in the fray, and managed to pull the big guy off enough for Ouen to wriggle out.
The shifter grabbed a handful of sand and tossed it into the brawler’s face (he had good aim, if anything). The man spat angrily, but seemed to be running short on breath. Perhaps Ouen and his ally were finally making their point? The skinnier fellow still hadn’t gotten up off the ground, and was sitting in place dazedly, a hand held up to his forehead.
