It had, once again, been quite the quiet and lonely day for the neko. Classes came and went, dinner time was over, and the twilight like sky began to darken all the more.
Callie sat on her bed that was tucked away in the corner of the dorm room closest to the doorway. It was mostly dark, but a cozy sort of darkness. As cozy as a lonely darkness could be, anyways. There was a simple lamp set upon her nightstand that created a soft circle of light about it. In her hold was a small plushie that she had found left alone in the room the day she had moved in. The poor thing had its arm almost torn right off and that made the kitten feel sad for it. It had either been loved a lot, or not at all. Her guess was the latter since it had been abandoned. Left hurt and alone. This is something that just didn't sit well with her, so with her little sewing kit set that maow maow had made for her to take with when she moved on the stand beside the lamp, she began to plan out 'Operation..', 'Operation'... "Hmmm..." she hummed to herself while trying to debate what she would call this particular attempt. Yet, after a a minute or so, she still couldn't settle on what to call it. "Well, it doesn't matter what we call it, right? All that matters is that we get you back to feeling better."
The little stuffed toy was moved to Callie's lap as she opened her kit, taking out a set of needles, a small pair of scissors, and the color thread she thought would best suit the repairs out of what she had. She unspun a good amount of thread from the spool and snipped it, having learned that a little more was better than a little less in past experiences, and proceeded to her least favorite part about sewing. Threading the needle. Licking the end of the thread and trying to send it through the rather ridiculously small eye that the needle seemed cursed to have. BUT!, even though it took several tries, she had finally gotten it through! "One small victory!" she said proudly. And with that, she poked the tip of the needle into her bedding and she pulled and evened out the strings, tying them off. "Okay... I'm sorry if this hurts, but we'll have you feeling better in no time~" she said with a caring smile. Taking up the toy in her hands, she began to position the arm for the best fix, then took a pin from the small cushion set on the stand as well. Once the pin was pushed through the material to keep it in place, the neko took in a breath and let it out slowly. "Welp..." she said with a pause "Here we go." And taking up the needle, so started the repair.

Zigari kept their gaze towards the floor as they were lead along the hallways of the dorm rooms. So much had happened in the little naga’s life — this just seemed like one more step in a vast sea of problems. Zigi inwardly sighed as the caretaker began talking again, telling Zigi about their roommate and how they’d ‘just love being roomed with someone’. Zigi huffed at that, muttering to themselves as they lugged a small suitcase along (there wasn’t much in it...a stuffed animal and a few shirts). They very much doubted that having a roommate would be as good of a thing as the caretaker let on. Zigi would have much rather preferred to be alone while at school. Other people just made life more complicated — as far as the Naga had learned. Every one that had ever come into their life had let them down. This roommate was going to be no different. Zigi was sure of it. Zigi blinked as the caretaker came to a stop and they almost knocked into them. They glanced around, eyes focusing on the door as the caretaker began to talk more. Zigiari wasn’t listening, though. Their heart beat was speeding up and their scales were beginning to itch — a nervous tick they had seemed to pick up early on in their life. Zigi wanted nothing more than to turn tail and slither away as fast as they could. They forced themselves back into the present when the caretaker said his name — for what sound like the tenth time, Zigi was sure. “Zigari? Come on now, focus. Your new roommate is waiting on the other side of this door. You’ll be fine, hm?” Zigari just looked at the grimm, a small pout on their lips. They chose not to say anything, though, and instead glanced back to the door. Zigi heard a small, quiet sigh escape the caretaker’s lips as she knocked gently on the door and waited for an answer.

If there was one this that was true about sewing, even the smallest of things, is that it calmed the neko after a hard day and made time past quickly. It also made her homesick. Made her miss maow maow who taught her. Made her miss paw paw who was always in need of patch jobs on his clothes after a long day's work. Even with the small distraction of missing home, Callie was diligently working on repairing the poor toy that had been left alone.
Although quite engrossed in her project, the unexpected sound at the door started the kitten, causing her to do the one thing she had never done while sewing. Poke her finger! A small yowl escaped from her as she put her finger in her mouth as an instant reflex, whimpering softly as she pulled it out and shook it. "That really did hurt. No wonder maow maow uses thimbles..."
She decided she'd check her kit later to see if one was packed away for her, but for now, the mystery of the noise at the door. Poking the needle into the plush's arm, wincing on its behalf, Callie set it aside and padded to the door. Slowly she turned the knob and pulled it open just enough to see a somewhat familiar face. A caretaker? She may have met them while meeting her own. "H--hello?" she mewled out in an anxious tone. Had she done something to get in trouble? The poor neko was always so worried about getting in trouble, even if there was no reason for it. She could only wonder what would warrant such a late visit while doing her best not to let a sneezing fit began like they tended to when she was nervous.

“Good evening, Callie dear,” The grimm said as she smiled warmly at the freshling that was only just peeking out the door. “I’m terribly sorry to be intruding so late.” She kept her voice soft and unassuming — she knew that the small neko was a nervous sort (thanks to information from the little one’s caretaker) and she didn’t wish to frighten her in any way. “We’ve had a new enrollment today and headmistress Ava was adamant that they be placed in a room tonight. So you’ve gained a roommate.” The grimm stepped aside, revealing Zigari to Callie. “Callie this is Zigari. Zigari, Callie.” The grimm placed her hand on Zigi’s back, urging them forward as she nodded towards the neko. Zigari grunted, a small frown marring their face as they were introduced to their new roommate. They still would have preferred to have been alone. Zigi glanced up to the grimm, another small pout to their face. One look from the older woman, however, had Zigari quickly looking away and back at the neko almost hiding behind the door. They mumbled a quick and quiet hello as they gripped at their suitcase tighter. Sighing, the grimm shook her head and looked back up at Callie. “I’m so sorry it’s such short notice but it can’t be helped, hm?” She paused for a moment before moving to usher Zigari in. “Come on, now. It’s late and you two have classes tomorrow. Best get settled in, Zigiari, and get some sleep.”

The soft and friendly tone offered up by the caretaker was a great relief to the little neko's nerves. Maow maow always said that she was a bundle of nerves and guilt without needing to be, and would always calm her feelings by cuddling her close and stroking her hair softly. That was the feeling that the grimm's voice gave her. Her ears perked up as she listened to what was being said.
It wasn't fully registering in her mind until the kind lady stepped aside. Blinking, Callie looked at the familiar form of a naga and instantly felt at home. That is, until she saw the expression on the others' face. Her ears fell and tail curled about her little leg. Her stature shrunk some as well, unable to shake the feeling that she had done something wrong already to deserve such a greeting from someone she hadn't met before.
"It's... It's okay," the little neko said softly, opening the doorway while still hiding behind it. "C--come in, Zigari." Her voice was soft, nearing the point of being inaudible. Her eyes looked at theirs, then fell to the floor. "It's n--nice to meet y-- y-- yaaahachoo!" Oh gosh! Not already! The poor kitten's nervousness was apparent, but even more so when she began to sneeze. It was such a strange reaction, and quite involuntary. With a humiliated look on her face, she pulled her sweater up over her face to hide her embarrassment, keeping herself hidden behind the door.

“Thank you for being so understanding, Callie.” The grimm gave the neko a small smile when she sneezed and blessed her. “If you two need anything, at all, you’re more than welcome to seek me out. I’d be more than happy to help you out. Good night, you two.” And with that, the soft spoken grimm was turning and leaving. Zigari glanced back, watching her move out of sight. Sighing they turned and glanced towards the neko before heading into the room and making a beeline straight for the obviously unoccupied bed. They dropped their suitcase next to the bed, not even bothering to open it or unpack anything, and climbed up into bed. The last thing Zigi wanted to do that night was deal with unpacking their few belongings or talk to their now roommate. They wished they could just curl up and forget everything that had happened in the past week — or their whole life, if they were being honest with themselves. Zigiari pulled their covers up to their neck and turned to face the wall and pretended to fall asleep instantly — though in reality they laid there, staring at the wall and wished that sleep were that easy for them.

The little neko peered out from the top of her sweater as the caretaker said her good-byes before leaving. After her new roommate made their way into the room, Callie closed the door and turned around. She was still hiding in her sweater some, but didn't want to be rude and so she was going to attempt a little small talk. It was much to her surprise that the other just climbed straight into bed without a word to her. Not that it was a bad thing because they must have had a long day.
Scratching her cheek lightly, the little kitten softly padded back to her bed. It would be terribly rude of her to leave her light on, so she decided she'd save finishing sewing the plushie for another time. Moving things to her nightstand as quietly as she could, Callie climbed onto her bed and under her covers. "Good night..." she whispered softly, reaching over and turning her lamp off. Nestling into her covers, Callie looked over at the other bed and the lump of naga beneath it, wishing nothing more than wanting to go snuggle up beside them. It was a strange thought, but she missed having someone to curl up next to like back home. With a soft sigh, she closed her eyes and snuggled up to her own little plush, drifting off to sleep.
Since coming to the academy, Callie had somewhat become used to sleeping in a bit later then she would have back at home. Back home she would have been up before the softer light of the twilight world began to show through her windows, but now that soft morning light was what usually woke her up. With a yawn and no want to stir from bed just yet, Callie nestled up to the soft bump in the bed and appreciate the comfort that felt as if she was curled up beside someone. Needless to say, the poor neko hadn't realized what was going on just yet.

Much to Zigari’s surprise, it hadn’t taken them nearly as long as they expected to fall asleep. The day’s events must have been more tiring than they had thought. And, for the first time in a long time, Zigari slept through the night. They stirred the next morning, unsure of why they felt so warm. Their tail twitched, curling around something soft and snuggling closer to whatever it was. As Zigari slowly awoke, they became more aware of their surroundings — a new bed, a new room, a new...roommate. Zigi’s brows furrowed together as they forced their eyes open and came face to face with something fuzzy. When realization dawned on them, they hissed and instantly jerked their tail away from the neko from the night before. “Get off of me,” Zigi said as they pushed at the neko and moved away, tucking as much against the wall as they could. Why on earth had the neko ended up in their bed, snuggled up against them? And why on earth hadn’t they woken up when they’d climbed into bed? The thought of their guard being down so much made Zigari shudder and recoil even more. Having someone so close to them was not what they wanted. Not after so many they’d let get close had hurt them. “What are you doing in my bed?”

Even as the bump in the bed beside her stirred, Callie didn't think anything of it. It felt like a calm, Sunday morning to her. A day that she and her grandpurrents slept in late in a pile of fur together. It was such a nice feeling. Especially when she felt a tail curling about her. It was like being snuggled up by maow maow or paw paw. She began to purr softly and nestled against the bump even more.
That reassuring feeling of home came crashing down in an instant as a hiss was heard and suddenly she was shoved! And shoved hard enough to make her fall right off the edge of the bed at that! With a hurt mewl, Callie sat up, confused as anything while she tried to figure out what just happened. Then it dawned on her... She wasn't back home, curled up with her grandpurrents. She was in her dorm room. But... What happened?
It took a few moments for the angry words hissed at her to jog her memory. That's right. She got a new roommate. But why were they yelling at her, and why had she been pushed out of bed and onto the floor? Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked around, dazed and confused, while trying to find out what went wrong. Then she noticed her bed was on the other side of the room! That meant!... Slowly her eyes turned to look up at the bed she was next to, seeing the angry figure of the naga she had met last night. She bit her lip as she felt it tremble, trying not to fall apart as she sniffled and tears began to roll down her cheeks. "I'm... I'm sorry. I don't kn--know what happened... Please don't be mad at me." she pleaded as more tears stung at her eyes and her ears fell.

Zigari blinked, startled slightly at the tremble in the neko’s voice. Why did it seem like she was about to cry? It was her fault anyway. She shouldn’t have been in their bed. Grunting, Zigari moved away from the wall and muttered an ‘it’s ok’ before letting their tail hang over the edge of the bed. They wouldn’t apologize for knocking them out, though. She really shouldn’t have been in their bed. Zigari rubbed their face, sighing and glancing towards the suitcase they’d just tossed down the night before. They didn’t have much to their name, so unpacking was something that would be super quick. But would it be worth it? It seemed like every time they unpacked, they were scooped up again and dragged somewhere else. Headmistress Ava had promised Zigari would be allowed to stay as long as they wished, though. They wondered if those words would hold true or not. In their past, they’d had that same promise repeated to them several times and not once had it been kept. Sighing, Zigari ignored the neko, for now, and slid off of the bed and hefted the suitcase up onto it instead and began sifting through their belongings and putting things away into the dresser that they assumed was theirs

The quiet and gruff acceptance of her apologize eased the frazzled neko slightly. She still didn't understand what had happened herself, but at least they didn't seem as if they'd hold it against her... maybe? Sniffling, Callie scooted back across the floor until she bumped into the side of her bed. She figured it might be best to give her new roommate their space? Tucking her little hands into the ends of her sleeves, she wiped at the still falling tears with the hopes they would stop. They didn't stop, but they did slow some.
Although things were certainly not off to a good start between the two, Callie found herself curious as the naga took to putting their things away in the dresser nearest to their bed. And luckily the tears finally did slow to a stop. She thought to offer to help, but then again, it might not be such a good idea right now. Pushing herself up off the floor, she shifted on her feet and fussed with her sleeves. "Cl--classes start in about an hour. If... If you're hungry, I c-can show you where to g-- g-- etch!" A nervous sneeze. Oh what a horrid tick that was, and what a funny sounding one this time at that. "Sorry..." she said softly, her cheeks heating up in a blush. "where to get breakfast" she finished quickly.

Zigari tried to ignore the neko as she spoke but the mention of food made the naga’s stomach rumble quite audibly. Their cheeks reddened and Zigi couldn’t help but reach up and rub at them — the stupid things. They weren’t sure how eating at the academy worked, though, and with no money, Zigi wasn’t sure if they’d get to eat or not. Not that it would be much different than where they’d come from. There had been days when they’d gone without food completely. Zigi jumped when the neko sneezed and turned to look at her, facial features pinched in confusion. She seemed to sneeze a lot. Did she have allergies? Sighing, Zigi shook their head and looked away. “I don’t have money.”

As she received the cold shoulder from her offer, Callie tried very hard not to fall back into crying once again. The academy had been such a lonely place so far, and even with someone else in the room now, it seemed all the more so. Plus, it may have been for the best since she had already embarrassed herself with her sneezing... which was noted when she caught the startled look on the naga's face. The reply she got was surprising. "Oh.. uhmm... You don't have to worry about that, here." This must have been a quick thing because they didn't even know how it worked! "Those of us who... who room at the academy... Our food is covered. The o--only time we have to p--pay is for treats and eating outside the school." She gave a slight smile, though her eyes were still red and puffy from crying earlier. "Your tummy sounded hungry. They make really yu--yummy pancakes and w-waffles." she offered as she tried to persuade them to go get breakfast.

Zigari’s cheeks flushed again but they instantly perked up when the neko — they really should remember their name — mentioned that Zigari wouldn’t have to pay for food while rooming at the academy. Was that true? Would they actually be able to eat whenever they pleased or whenever they were hungry. Their tail twitched slightly, rattler making a small clicking sound. Zigi quickly controlled the movement, however, and curled their tail around themselves. “Waffles…?” It had been ages since they’d had waffles. So long, in fact, that the memory was very distant and involved his actual parents. Zigi closed their eyes, took a deep breath and shoved those memories far back into their mind. It wouldn’t do well to start crying in front of their new roommate. “I...I like waffles. A lot. Are you sure it’s alright?”

The look from Zigari was all too familiar to the neko. With a still ever shy smile, she nodded. "Mmhmm. The waffles are really yummy. I like the banana pancakes best, myself, but..." Her voice trailed off as the other seemed to be trapped in thought. She could only wonder what was on their mind by the expression that took place on their face once again. As Zigari came back to the world of their dorm room once again, Callie took the chance at inching a little closer even though they were a room apart. "Mmhmm. It's alright for sure." Her tone of voice was sweet and encouraging, and what's more is the fact that she didn't feel so anxious at the moment. She didn't know what they thought of her, but at least for the moment, they didn't seem to hate her. A quiet purr emitted from the neko as she nodded toward the door. "I usually go down in my pajamas, then come back and get dressed." Stepping toward the door, and with what took all her courage, she reached her hand out to offer it to them. She was pretty certain they would reject it, and that was okay, but it never hurt to try and be kind. That's what her maow maow always taught her.
