Location: Sleepy Hollow, New York
Images:: x, x
General debriefing: The season of scaring is upon us, and it seems that some old legends hold kernels of truth.

...Or, at least, attract frenzied creatures that want to take advantage of all that residual fear lingering around.

* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, and at least one of them must be an Intermediate Trainee.)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the main portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 66H.

Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a BOSS ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.

1- 20: IN the woods, you hear a wheezing sort of laughter, ringing in your ears. Amidst the fog, yellow-orange lights bob in the distance, steadily growing closer no matter where you go. Your vision blacks out for a few seconds, and when it returns, a singular jack o lantern is resting atop a branch, its candle snuffing out abruptly.

21 - 30: A rickety wooden bridge is ahead, obscured by fog that's the sort of cold that runs all the way down to your bones. In the distance, you hear the steady beat of hooves against dirt, but they never seem to get any closer. A plank snaps underfoot, and one of your feet slips beneath, touching the water-- and something grabs your ankle for just a moment.

31 - 40: Black shadows swirl around your feet, slowing your movement down to a crawl, until you can't walk any further at all. Paranoia filters into your thoughts before vanishing abruptly with a loud, sudden noise sharper than any gunshot. The shadows have disappeared.

41 - 60: You see an old man, stooped over as he makes his way down a path. His head is ducked down, focusing intently on watching where he steps, a candle in his hand. Trying to get his attention to ask him about anything at all results in his head turning all the way around, his eye sockets completely empty. In the blink of an eye, he's gone, leaving behind only his candlestick holder, still smoking.

61 - 80: You come upon a grove with a crumbling mausoleum, looted and rotting. Trying to go around it, somehow, pulls you right back to its entrance. Upon going in, you have a vision of your own death, however fantastical it might be. As soon as it's over, you snap back to reality, and the mausoleum is gone, leaving behind an open grave, a number of skeletons piled high in the dirt.

81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- The hoofbeats grow closer and closer until they're thunderous in volume. Atop a black horse as gargantuan as itself, the dullahan roars out of the fog, streaks of grey along its shadowy form revealing its Insanity. The horse rears high, forelegs kicking high, and shadows form around the dullahan in wispy shapes. It laughs, deep and wild, and every mocking bark echoes through the woods.

Holding its its fiery pumpkin head high leads to the worst possible outcome. Sparks fly, jumping to the detritus littered around the forest, and before long, trees are set aflame. As every minute passes, it spreads further and further, until you are surrounded in a blaze.

You better hurry.

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is gigantic headless horseman that has 100 HP.

Every time you attack the boss (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

After Boss defeat:
Upon its defeat, the fire abruptly goes out as if doused by rain. A ghostly wail shrieks and races towards the sky, and the pumpkin head lays charred and smashed on the ground.

It's over, for now.

Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

* 2 mission reward points for completing this successfully

Horace scuffed the ground idly as he waited. He'd already gone through the portal without the other, whomever they were, too impatient to be off island. For the most part, even Lawrence left him alone, so he wasn't sure why everything felt like a ticking time-bomb. Nerves or something, stupid s**t.

He toyed with the strap on his bag, eyeing the fog warily. Horace didn't play a lot of Silent Hill, but this was clearly silent hill-esque, even if it was a different sort of legend. Two more were coming for this, joy. Maybe they wouldn't be terrible to work with.

Cracking his neck, Horace sighed. He probably should have waited at the portal instead of through.

Mikael usually avoided missions. Usually. It was just unfortunately one of those things you couldn't avoid forever, and he hadn't. So, forced to show up and trying to prove he was responsible he had.

He of course, reluctant to leave the island at all, hovered by the portal. Maybe no one would show up and he could go back to building sandcastles.

Jordan hadn't been to this particular location before. He wasn't sure what to expect. He approached the portal, carrying his mission bag. There was only one person waiting here, and he recognized the kid from Twitter, he thought; the strange blond kid who appeared to be Lawrence's son. Well, this might be an interesting mission. He hadn't met the kid in person yet. He might be competent. "Hi," he said, stopping in front of Mik and offering a friendly handshake. "I'm Jordan. Has our third person shown up yet?"

"Went through already," the tech attending the portal said, sounding bored. "You going or not?"

Mikael didn't recognise the man who headed over, he had seen Jordan on twitter now and then, but he had very little memory - and possibly inclination - to remember faces. Still, he seemed friendly and extended his hand, which Mik took and shook with a bright smile as the brief flicker of uncertainty in those blue eyes so identical in hue but different in nature from his father.

"Oh they are through already?" he said keenly, refusing to let go of the proferred hand and wanting to hold it as he and Jordan went through the portal.

PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2016 4:30 pm

"You're Mikael, right?" Jordan smiled, but it turned a little puzzled as Mik didn't let go of his hand. The conversations on Twitter had given him the impression of a younger kid, even though Mik seemed to be in his late teens, and the way he was acting seemed just slightly off. Jordan tried to take his hand back, but Mik's hand tightened on his, hanging on firmly.

"Uh, let's head on through then," he said, shooting Mik a strange look, and moved to step through the portal. If the kid didn't let go of his hand on the other side, he'd figure something out.

"Yes!" he said brightly as they went, his grip surprisingly tight for such a slim and light teenager. "I am Mikael! What is your name?"

On the other side he seemed to forget his question momentarily as he spotted Horace. "Oh noooo." he said, before seeming to realise he should explain himself to his new friend. "Horace tried to throw me in the ocean once."

PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2016 5:13 pm

His head lifted as two people stepped through the portal, his expression brightening as he caught sight of Jordan and then dimming when he saw Jordan's blonde baggage. "Hey, Jordan," he said, ignoring Mikael's obvious dismay. "Nice to have you along." And he meant it. Jordan seemed very proficient, he was a full hunter, and Horace got along with him. A good combination. Mikael, on the other hand...

"Mikael, did you even read the mission briefing?"

"I'm Jordan," Jordan repeated, blinking at Mik. Hadn't he just ... okay. "Could I get my hand back? It's better to have both hands free when you're on a mission." The explanation about Horace was not particularly revealing. "Uh. Did he?"

Horace got a smile that was a cross between relieved and puzzled. "Hey," Jordan answered. "Good to see you. Anything showing up yet?"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2016 5:58 pm

"What's a mission briefing?" Mikael said without missing a beat, looking genuinely curious about this complete mystery.

Jordan got a slightly dazed nod for his name also, which could have meant that Mikael had listened to the name this time or that perhaps yet again it had gone completely over his head. He looked at the hand he was holding and with a flicker of sadness and reluctance let go. It was a fair point, it was good to have two hands on a mission, he just didn't get to touch people often.

"And uh huh he diiid." he crooned. "He said it was to help me swim. I don't want to be thrown at monsters to help me fight."

"Nothing besides a bunch of fog. Makes me kind of uneasy though - a little like the fear miasma that sometimes pops up. Visibility's down, too." He rubbed the back of his neck. "It might be easy to get lost." Forests always made him damn antsy, and with good reason. Aokigahara had only enforced his hatred of the places. Too many things lurked in forests, disguised themselves in the innocuity of green leaves and still trunks.

Mikael got an exasperated look. "Do you think I'm going to launch you at a monster like a human cannonball?" he asked in an incredulous voice. "Wait - don't answer that... A briefing tells you want the mission's about. In this case we're looking for fear creatures attracted by residual energy. Sleepy Hollow and all that." He exhaled noisily.

"Why don't we head out and get this over with?"

"Fog," Jordan said, and shook his head. "Never good." He looked out into the forest. It seemed, for now, like a relatively ordinary forest, if dim, old, and branching.

"It's, uh, usually a good idea to take a look at the mission briefing before you go, to get an idea of what you're going to be walking into on the other side," he said to Mik, trying to keep his tone instructional rather than incredulous. "There might be monsters we'll have to deal with. Have you done any fighting?"

"We should get going," he agreed, and started into the woods, glancing back to be sure his companions were with him. Before long, he spotted a structure in a stand of trees. "Over there," he said, and pointed, altering his course to head for it.

It turned out to be a mausoleum, crumbling, its door hanging open and listing drunkenly. He started around the mausoleum, and three steps later found himself walking into the open door. He stopped, backed up, and tried to walk around it in the other direction, and once again found himself headed into the open door. He glanced back. "I don't know what you guys are seeing, but I can't seem to walk around this thing," he said, sighed, and took a few cautious steps forward, into the doorway.

It was dark inside, darker than it should have been even in the dimness of the forest. A creak sounded behind him, and he whirled to find the broken door swinging shut, closing with a dull boom. "s**t," he hissed, and shoved against the door, barely able to see his hands in front of his face. The door didn't budge, and he heard, suddenly, a sound that made his spine prickle: a steady trickling of water, and when he moved his foot he heard a sloshing sound. He shoved against the door with his hands, then threw his shoulder against it. "s**t."

There wasn't enough room to summon Ferros, and the door refused to budge. The water climbed slowly up his calves, above his knees, a slow cold inevitability. It shouldn't be possible that this small chamber was holding water, he thought inanely. The building had been falling apart, open to the air. The door shouldn't even have been able to close. He pounded on it again, shouted, got no answer. The water continued to rise, to his waist, his chest. When he reached up, his hand hit the ceiling, and he swallowed hard and resumed shoving against the door, futilely, aware it was useless.

He'd thought about it. It was nothing like what he'd imagined. His lungs burned, and eventually his body forced him to breathe in, and it was like cold knives and choking and far, far too long before it became nothing at all.

His eyes snapped open, and he was on his knees on the ground, coughing helplessly, staring down into an open grave piled with bones.

Mikael, having not read the mission briefing at all, had no idea where they were other than that there were trees and it was foggy.

In his head he felt his weapon stir, normally quiet in a state of cold judgement of his failures but roused somehow by the scent of life and green.

<> he growled, low and gruff. <nature, the great terrible green realm. Danger is here, but we are also danger of our own. Sharp teeth and quick wits prevail and all shall be ours.>>

Mik uneasily shifted from foot to foot, looking around as he tried to ignore the strange surge of primal desire which came part and parcel of the weapon's speech, all bared teeth and hot close fur.

"Maybe?" he said uncertainly, ignoring the request not to answer the question. Maybe Horace would try and throw him into danger.

<> Fenris snarled. <>

That seemed really rude and not a good idea and Mikael pushed it aside in favour of following Jordan. "I have not done much fighting." he said guiltily. "I don't like fighting."

<> the huge wolf stated. <>

He did not follow into the mausoleum and instead fearfully waited, trying to pry the door open when it slammed shut to no avail. He turned to seek for Horace in the fog, to help Jordan escape and found himself instead surrounded by strange and eerie lights.

Backing up against the stone he found himself cornered and it was only moments before he slumped back, staring straight ahead.

The Jack o Lantern was given an unsure, dazed look as he hurried back to look for the others.

"Jordan? Horace?" he called.

Horace rolled his eyes at Mikael and instead followed Jordan as he led the way. They wandered into a graveyard, an odd thing in the middle of a forest, but apparently fear concentration was all about the atmosphere as well. He watched Jordan paused and stared at the inside of some sort of mausoleum. Jordan glanced back once, but otherwise remained unmoving.

"Jordan?" he questioned, starting forward just as the sun hunter stepped inside. Expressionless, Jordan turned and closed the mausoleum door with a loud scraping sound of stone. What the s**t. Mikael sprang forward, trying to open the stone door as Horace ducked around the side, looking for a window, for anything. Clearly, the fog here was full of fear - it might already be causing horrible side effects. It would likely fade in and out, he hoped, but he'd rather they get to Jordan in time. He summoned Jannisari, her runes glowing gently in the fog. It made him a big ******** target, but better to be prepared for anything. Raising his hand, he slammed his fist into the mausoleum wall.

Or he would have, had it not entirely disappeared. The stone monument vanished and Horace stumbled forward comically. Catching his balance he looked up. There he was! Kneeling at the foot of a grave was Jordan. Someone stood over him, head bowed, seeming to look at his feet more than at Jordan. He was wizened, old, and looked as frail as the tendrils of fog that snaked around him. Candle-light flickered around the two of them, bouncing off of the vapor in the air. He reached out a hand towards Jordan's white-coated shoulder.

"Hey!" It wasn't the most articulate cry, but it caught the old man's attention and he glanced up and up, his neck twisted round like an owl's, staring straight as Horace. Or through Horace. Where his eyes should have been were only blackened holes, Horace's skin crawled and his breath caught. And, suddenly, the old man was gone. On the ground next to Jordan sat a candle holder, the stub of a candle flickering out. He started forward, coming up next to Jordan.

"Y-you okay?" Then Mikael's voice sounded out. Horace had unfortunately forgotten about the boy and he cursed, searching the fog for a blond head of hair. This was harder than it looked. But the shadow of a slumped figure caught his eye.

"Mikael! We're behind you!"
