Sanidine was oblivious to any energy signature; he'd briefly felt Evan's—or, this youma's—whatever, but he couldn't sense anything else. His blood was pumping so loudly in his ears that he almost didn't hear anything else. Even the cool wind on his face felt like nothing against his burning face. He was angry, and frantic, and felt helpless in the exact way he'd wanted to avoid—always wanted to avoid.

He reached a hand, barely stable, down towards the youma in front of him. "Evan," he whispered, searching his face for something. Anything.

There was recognition of some sort—and a confusion that mirrored his own face.

He didn't know what to do. Or who to go to. Or if there was a way to fix this.

He'd wanted to protect Evan—or, at least, give him a chance to stand up for himself.

This was unexpected, and unwanted.

He shook his head, hand trembling just an inch away from Evan's cheek.

The youma didn't flinch, so he stomached his disgust—he hated youma, they creeped him the ******** out—and stroked his thumb lightly over the youma's cheek.

Cavansite had seen the whole thing. She sort of had figured what was going to happen the moment that Sanidine had stuck his hand into the cooks chest…and she was intrigued. She hadn’t seen a corruption since her own…and that was something different…if she could corrupt someone…that was pretty awesome, and this was a great way to learn it. The captain was standing on the same rooftop, behind some sort of airconditioning unit or something that was atop the building and watched, her excitement and interest turning to something like horror when suddenly the human morphed into…

Into well. A youma. Oh wow.

So that’s where youma came from…they were…people?

That was something she hadn’t expected, to be honest…sure half youma had been agents…but that seemed as though it was mostly a choice…Cinnabar had chosen it, right? But…this was different.

Finally after being stunned for a good few minutes, the captain moved out of her hiding spot.

“What did you do to him? So much for my little Cookie, hm? Who’s the a*****e now?”

A cold dread flooded through Sanidine—not the first of the evening, and likely not the last. Caught in the middle of his mistake, he jerked his head over his shoulder to look at Cavansite. "Shut up," he said, roughly rising to his feet. His mind was already twisting; he didn't want to take the blame for this. This never would have happened if she hadn't been there.

If she hadn't threatened him. Pushing him.

"This is your fault," he said, pointing an accusatory finger at her.

Evan's mind had been muddled—morphed into something far from human. Everything felt like static, like the only voice he could hear was Sanidine's. Even Cavansite's was mumbled, like she was speaking through a radio.

But youma or not, he knew she was worth fearing.

The corruption might have built a wall around the person he used to be and the thing he was now, but he drew back, clawing at the roof beneath him.

Sanidine moved to stand between Cavansite and Evan, as if he still had reason to think she would attack him.

“My fault? Really? Are you just going to point all of your fingers at me for your mistake?” She smirked, her spear appearing as she spoke, now held loosely in her hand. “He would have simply been dead if I had my way. And now you get this cute little…well. Freak to follow you around for the rest of your life. I bet you feel damn proud of yourself, don’t you?”

Cavansite wanted to get closer. She wanted to inspect this newly made youma…maybe even cut him open to see what was inside. This was something new, something she had never heard of before…something she had never thought about before either…it was kind of exciting.

Though at the same time it was kind of really disturbing, so there was that.

“Do you think he’s going to be stuck like that forever? He really meant something to you, huh? I bet that feels just awful. Oh well.”

Sanidine's eyes flashed and his hand lowered, balling into a fist at his side. The fact was, he didn’t know if Evan was going to be stuck like that, but he didn't know what the hell you were supposed to do to make someone not a youma. He could have gone to a higher officer, but he didn't want to admit a mistake.

He didn't want to deal with that.

There was no sympathy from Cavansite—not that he wanted any. But she was rubbing salt in the wound and he wanted to hit her twice as hard in the other side of her face.

"Why are you even here?" he finally said, through grit teeth. He eyed the spear in her hand unflinchingly. "What do you care?"

“Why am I here? Well, I’m here because I wanted to see what you would do with my little Cookie, and when I saw you approaching him, I figured you were going to bring him to our side of the war, and since I haven’t seen that happen since I was brought to our wonderful cause…I was kind of excited to see what he became…but I guess you don’t have the power to really corrupt him yet. What a shame. I bet I could have done it.”

She was better than this captain, that much was abundantly clear to her, and she liked it that way. She wasn’t someone who wanted to be weak. Yuck. In fact, the very thought of weakness repulsed her beyond normal levels of repulsion.

“Also, little squiggly sword, I care because I don’t really want pansys in the Negaverse. And did you really think that brining that spineless cook in was going to even work? He might not have had the stuff to be in anyway, and that’s why you failed. It might have been all his fault, and not yours at all. What made you think he would be a good addition to our ranks anyway?”

"He was mine to begin with, you had no right to decide that his life was yours." His lip was still curled into a sneer. "You couldn't have done any better. You can't even fight."

He was goading her, maybe. Trying to piss her off.

He wanted an excuse—more than this—to beat the s**t out of her.

"—At least he's good for something. Unlike you. We had an arrangement, you know. And you went back on it. Why? You could have gone after anyone, but you knew he was mine. Did you want to start s**t with me?"

“I fight just fine, thank you very much. I just don’t have the practice with my new spear that I need to be fantastic.” She waved a hand impatiently. “I wanted him, that’s all. He had fifteen minutes to make me a cheeseburger, and he couldn’t even perform that simple task for me.” Of course she wouldn’t mention the fact that poor little Cookie had to run and get the ground beef, no no. That would seem like she was picking on him far too much.

Cavansite smirked at the thought however, shifting her stance. “Besides. We’re discouraged to fight amongst ourselves. I’m quite sure I could get you into trouble for that. Fighting with a fellow officer over the life of a dinky little human. When we’re supposed to collect starseeds for the cause anyway. Sure, his would go to the cause of my outfit, but still.”

She shrugged. “Oh well. What a loss. I do hope you have fun with your new little pet youma. I’ll sure miss his food.”

Sanidine's eyes narrowed, as if she questioned the validity of her story. He didn’t have a lot of confidence in Evan's abilities—besides cooking, there was basically only one or two things Sanidine thought he did well.

But Evan wouldn't have screwed up a meal.

"You were going to kill him! What the hell did you think—that his ghost was gonna stick around and keep cooking for you? If you wanna turn me in go ahead."

There was a challenge in his voice—a confidence.

"I'll let them know exactly what type of shady, untrustworthy, scheming little b***h you are. And I'll dig up every scrap of information I can on you, every pathetic little mistake you've ever done, and I'll make sure everyone knows about it."

He lifted his head a bit so he could look down his nose at her. "Don't think you're tough s**t just because you're a new Captain. I've been doing this longer than you, and I'm still better than you."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2016 8:58 am

“Hah.” The captain shook her head and shrugged once more. “If that’s what helps you sleep at night. So be it. It’s true, you have been doing this longer than me, and yes, you might be better than me at everything.”

She turned away, walking to the edge of the rooftop, away from Sanidine and the little youma cook. At the edge she paused, looking back at the other captain and giving a bright, dazzling grin that was absolutely full of sarcasm. “For now. I will surpass you though. Just you wait. Have a wonderful night!”

With that, she jumped off of the rooftop and a few moments later she was gone. Leaving Sanidine with his mistake.

It was time to find Cinnabar.

Anger flooded through him, but this time Sanidine waited until she was gone; he turned and slammed his fist into the nearest hard surface—a metal plating on some air conditioning unit or something, he didn't know. But the metal warped and cracked beneath his touch and he was so angry that he didn't feel it.

But he scared Evan, who tried to jump to his feet and run—only to land in a clumsy heap on the ground.

"Hey," Sanidine snarled, angrier than he'd meant, but it was enough to make Evan freeze.

Sanidine drew his hand away and wiped his knuckles on his uniform before carefully making his way over to the youma.

"I'm not mad at you. But you and me got some things to work out."

Evan didn't say anything. Sanidine didn't even know if he could. He didn't know if there was anything left of Evan in there.

Sanidine didn't realize he was crying. Didn't even feel it. His face was so hot that the tear that fell down his cheek felt like nothing more than a stray hair. He didn't realize his vision had blurred. He wasn't shaking—didn't feel that awful burn in his throat.

He didn't realize it, but Evan did.

And the youma, still confused and off balance and not sure of this body, pressed its forehead to his.

There wasn't any 'making this okay', but it was something.

Maybe some of Evan was still in there.

Sanidine stood quickly—quick enough to alarm the youma—but he tenderly reached down, scooped him up, and sighed.

"…Let's go home."
