Ten grueling minutes ticked by, between when Evan had bolted from the bar, and then the back door yanked open and he ran inside.

Drenched in sweat, and water. It wasn't raining outside, but Evan had taken a few shortcuts. It was his own fault for thinking he could outrun the sprinklers, and his fault he missed the bucket of dirty water he'd toppled over.

But he had the ground beef and nearly threw the (now very burned) food off the stove and pulled out a fresh pan. Frantically, he tore at the packaging and then he had to stop and run to the sink to wash his hands. An apology was on his lips, but he couldn’t find his voice around Cavansite. He didn't look at the clock; he was too afraid he hadn't made it.

Hands washed, he hastened to mold the ground beef, season it, and get his cooking. Evan was trying desperately to catch his breath; he already felt like he could just pass out and take a nap right there on the floor, but he was afraid of what Cavansite might do to him if he tried.

With deft fingers, he began scrubbing a potato and began to slice it. "I tried to hurry," he finally blurted, voice wavering. "I'm sorry. Do you want something to drink? I can get you something off the top shelf," he insisted, trying to butter her up. His hands were fumbling and he couldn’t think straight; he knew this was going to be bad when he missed the potato and sliced his finger.

He was pretty sure she was going to kill him after all of this, and he was trying to figure out if it was a good idea to just stab himself in the heart now so she couldn’t get his starseed or pray that someone came in tonight and stopped her.

To be perfectly honest, Cavansite had been absolutely sure that her little cook wasn’t going to make it, and when he did, she just laughed. She laughed and laughed up until he started cooking the food. Oh. Oh this was funny. “Do you really think you can even reach the top shelf, cookie? Do you really think that? But yes. Give me something from the top shelf.”

He was so flustered. So afraid. She wasn’t quite sure why this was so…so satisfying…but oh it was. It was perfect. And she knew just what to do next…and she was so excited for what she was going to do next.

“I didn’t realize it was supposed to rain tonight. Or do you just cause storms to appear? That would be your luck, wouldn’t it.” The captain sauntered over, eyes flicking around the various bottles of alcohol that were visible. “I think I’ll just help myself to this lovely looking bottle of whiskey. Maybe you could have a few swigs of it…you know, to settle your nerves?”

Evan didn't look at her as she began to fish around; he didn't want to know how expensive the bottle she was going after was going to be, and he was ashamed that she'd managed to catch him making such a fool of himself.

"No, thank you," he mumbled, though wasn't sure if he even had a say in it. He'd rather she just got drunk off her a**, pass out, and then he could call Lysithea or Hyperborea and pray that one of them could take care of her. It was a fantasy he entertained for so long that he nearly burned the fries. He saved them, at the last minute, but hoped she liked them extra crispy. He tried to work in silence, hoping that if he moved quick enough she wouldn’t be mad—that she wouldn’t hear his heart pounding in his chest. That she would leave so his raw emotions could just rupture and he could do his ugly crying thing and maybe go home and pretend like things were okay.

He sniffled, hating how loud it was, hating how much he felt. Hating everything. Hating that he couldn’t do anything but whatever it was that she wanted.

It wasn't the most beautiful burger; his nerves made it impossible to properly plate the meal, but he cooked as quickly as he could and presented her with a plate full of food, wide-eyed and hopeful. "Here, it's what you wanted. Everything you wanted. Unless you want something else, and I'll make that. Just—please." He didn't say it, he couldn’t.

But it was an unspoken plea.

He didn't want to be hurt.

While he worked, Cavansite had taken a few long swigs of the whiskey, wincing as it burned its way down her throat, but loving the way it made her feel. She kept quiet until he was done with all of the meal preparation and finally grinned, looking down at the plate. “Wow Cookie, you did such a good job…but you know. Now that I think about it…I really wasn’t in the mood for a cheeseburger after all. In fact, I think I’d really just like a nice old fashioned grilled cheese. Yeah, that sounds good. With some of those tasty homemade potato chips?”

She licked her lips and reached out a hand towards the plate, flicking her wrist and knocking it out of the teens hand.

“Then again…a starseed sounds pretty yummy too…I think I’ll just help myself. It’s been fun, Cookie…but I could use another dangly bit for my other earring.”

The captain pulled her hair aside, showing one of her earrings that held yet another starseed on it, as well as the one that was empty. “So…goodnight, little Cookie. Goodnight forever~”

Her hand slipped into his chest quick as you pleased, fingers wrapping around the delicate gem that resided inside. Though, after a moment it was no longer inside. It was outside, shining brightly. “At least you get to see it one more time before you die…that’s a good thing, right?”

She smirked and turned away from him, heading out the kitchen door with her prize held tightly in her hand.

Evan's mouth fell open in full horror when Cavansite knocked the plate out of her hand.

He didn't even have time to get to the knife he kept, to use if something bad happened. His mind was reeling when he stared at the twinkling little thing in her hand, horrified that she had just pulled something out of him.

His vision was swimming almost immediately, and though he tried to cling to consciousness, his body lost the will to stand on its own. His thoughts dragged through his mind, slow and fast all at once, and nothing made sense.

He saw a second pair of shoes as he hit the floor, but he was already too far gone.

Zack had been planning on coming in through the back to grab a quick meal of his own when he spotted Cavansite through the window. He saw her knock the plate out of his hand—saw her reach into Evan's chest—and the hair on the back of his neck bristled. His lips curled into a sneer and he bolted through the backdoor, powering up at the same time.

He was able to sense her energy signature at almost the exact same time his fist collided with her pretty face, one hand immediately snatching the starseed out of her hand.

"The <********> you think you're doing?" he demanded coldly, wasting no time with apologies. Evan's starseed was in his hand and he was already recoiling, kneeling down to be closer to the limp teenager.

"That's not part of our agreement," he seethed, glaring up at her as he heaved Evan up into a sitting position. "Or did you ******** forget that you weren't supposed to kill him?"

Surprise flooded through Cavansite, followed closely by rage. How dare he. He hit her! Hit her right across the face and…oh he was such a jackass. She would get them both. To hell with sides and with loyalty. This fool cared so much for this useless lump of flesh that he would hit another member of the Negaverse? Perhaps this was someone to talk to General Cinnabar about. Perhaps indeed.

Cavansite summoned her newly grown fairy wand slash spear into her hand and gave a growl. “To hell with any dealings with you. You’re no longer above me in rank, and I no longer have to pay you any sort of deference. I was doing as I wished. He was going to make a great addition to my outfit. I do hate being unsymmetrical. Are you really just going to put that thing back in his chest? Why? What is he to you that you’d protect him so badly? He’s just a nobody!”

She held her spear close, ready to run Sanidine through if she got the chance. Oh how she wanted the chance. Her face hurt, and she was wondering if she was going to get a black eye from this. Disgusting.

Sanidine growled; he shoved the starseed back into Evan without any care. He didn't have time to be concerned with being delicate. He rose to his feet almost immediately, sword appearing just in time to slash down at the tip of her spear as it flew towards him.

Sanidine didn't fight with his sword; he had special training with it. He fought with his fists, and as soon as the spear wasn't aiming straight towards him, he threw his weight at her, trying to throw her backwards.

"I told you not to ******** with him," he snarled, hand drawn back to throw another punch at her. "Who he is doesn’t matter. He's mine, and I'm not going to let you take that from me. I don't care if you're my rank or not, I'll break you."

There was a seriousness to his threats; he was unflinching and sincere in his promise.

Zack had spent enough time in back alleyways with knives and guns and death threats. He wasn't afraid of her. He'd beat the life out of her for this.

Well…s**t. Maybe she had miscalculated this a small bit. Honestly, Sanidine was kind of frightening…and if there was one thing that Cavansite hated…it was being frightened. It was so easy acting big and tough when she had the upper hand…but it seemed that the wind had changed for now…and her upper hand was far, far away. “Well. Deal with it. You saved your precious little Cook, oh well. So I got caught up. Just deal with it.”

Cavansite kept her spear tightly in her hands and took a step backwards, forcing a grin onto her face. “I’ll get him next time though. And I won’t bother playing nice about it. I won’t even make it a part of my wardrobe. I’ll just eat it. Crush the cute little gem right between my teeth. So. Enjoy him while you can.”

She ran then, darting out of the door and moving a safe distance away. As safe as she could get. It wasn’t fair. She had earned his starseed by now…and she would get it…though maybe not tonight. She could wait. Maybe.

Sanidine watched as she left, mistrust and fury in his eyes.

He didn't treat threats lightly, and even if she was a girl—and a new Captain, it didn't matter. She was determined to get what she'd wanted, and he'd made an enemy of her.

And Evan was too ******** stupid, and too ******** weak to do anything about it.

For now.

Evan still seemed unconscious, but he was breathing and moving just a bit, so Sanidine figured he had to be okay.

Sanidine had made up his mind. Carefully, he scooped him up.

Now, he was just going to make him better.

And deal with Cavansite, later.
