Ves didn't have a lot of animal experience, unless you counted shooing stray cats and raccoons away from the trash. But she'd been told by a friend that animals were therapeutic, so in these stressful times, she figured it was worth a shot.

The animal shelter always needed volunteers, apparently. Who'd have thought that a bunch of homeless animals needed all the help they could get?

"So how do I sign up to help out with the animals?"

She'd come in the morning, bright and early. Nothing like volunteering to get her out of bed.

Alexis didn't feel like s**t, surprisingly enough, and even more surprisingly they looked completely fine. The morning was their time, their time to come alive and to hate other people a little less -- volunteers were...there was good in the world. People weren't all bad. Working the morning shift, even though it was just volunteer hours -- that was okay. That was...that was good.

So they perked up at the desk, blinked their left eye to get what might-have-been sleep clouds and might-have-been blindness out of it -- a few blinks cleared what could be cleared -- and smiled at the woman, showing no teeth. Nonthreatening! Probably! Hopefully nonthreatening. Interact with people like the normal-human-being they were being trusted to be. "Actually, we have orientations once a month - you just missed the one this month - but, uh, we got a mailin' list. You got an email? It'll notify you when 's around time for the orientation."

"Oh. Just my luck, huh?" Ves said with a wistful smile. She didn't necessarily need to be on yet another mailing list - she'd stupidly signed up for about a hundred her freshman year at Rider-Waite and had never bothered to get off any of them - but it couldn't hurt. They didn't have to tell her twice that being around furry creatures could help relieve stress.

"Yea, it's just, vespertineprice2016@rider-waite.edu," she said. "Any chance I can still take a look around? I don't have too much animal experience. Love to learn, though."

And Alexis certainly didn't seem threatening. That was a good sign.

"Just your luck," Alexis deadpanned back, no bothering to smile. "Too many mailin' lists? Happens to everyone." The optimism wasn't bad -- it reminded them of a friend they'd had once, blonde and extravagant -- and this early in the morning, when Alexis' companions were usually a cup of already-cold coffee and a doorbell -- this could work.

"Jus' a second --" they pulled out a stack of sticky notes and a pen, scribbling it down. "Uh, Vespertine? Howzat spelled? ...******** it -" the notepad + pen was passed across the desk to her - "can you write it?" There was no recognition in their eyes -- they hadn't heard of her reputation, or if Alexis had, they certainly didn't show it. (If they had heard, they'd be jealous, honestly -- that sort of social skill would be defter than they knew.) "You can take a look around, yeah, but I've got to walk with you. That fine?"

"Sure." She grabbed the pen and wrote down her email with a flourish. Alexis' nonchalance almost didn't register, until she realized quietly that she'd stopped bracing for a strange look or a telltale sign of recognition. Ves could just be Ves, and not the chick with a thing for old dudes, or the chick who did slightly questionable things for money, or whatever other "chicks" she was in various people's minds. Relief.

"That's great," she answered, a warm smile spreading across her face. Couldn't quite help it. "I could use an introduction. You been here long?"

Alexis offered a very slight smile in return. The enthusiasm was a little bit...well. It was a little bit awkward to return at all, but -- this was a new town. A new place. They needed to be friendly if they wanted to make it around. College students were generally good people to know, after all.

"Been 'here' long, like -- this job or this city? 'Bout a month for the first, maybe two and a half for the latter. Needed a change of pace." The way Alexis grimaced implied that wasn't all there was to it, but I wanted to get away from literally everyone I knew was a terrible way to open up a conversation. "Animals like me -- I figured even though 's not a payin' job, I'm doin' something, at least."

"Better than nothing," Ves agreed. She was rewarded by that small smile. Reassuring, almost, to know she was getting somewhere with Alexis. Or, at least, not getting an outright hostile response.

"You been around animals a lot?" She asked. Maybe Alexis could teach her a thing or two while they were here. Ves had never had a pet before, and the extent of her knowledge was that you had to feed them and take them out for walks sometimes.

And that they were mostly furry.

"Ah, yeah -" They stood up, shoving the chair back. "I've kinda been with animals my entire life, just works out that way...I like dogs best, personally? But, y'know, all dogs are different. If you've never had an animal before, cat might be better? They're easier to take care of -- don't obviously require as much attention. Dogs, you need to always babysit! But cats aren't like that." Alexis' smile grew soft as they talked, but even more genuine.

This was clearly a topic they really cared about, compared to the banal pleasantries. And it had to have been why they'd been hired on (well, it was volunteer work, but really it was close enough) to be the front desk.

"A cat, huh?" Ves echoed thoughtfully. "I've heard cat psychology can be a little confusing for people who aren't used to them. Any tips on how to read them?"

Dogs, as far as she understood, were pretty straightforward. Most of them were happy a lot, and they wore their emotions on their proverbial sleeves, which made them infinitely easier to understand than cats.

But she could see the appeal of a cat. Something about their finicky, careful nature reminded her of herself. You had to earn a cat's approval, from what she'd heard, and that seemed to suit Ves just fine.

"You don't," Alexis shrugged. "If a cat wants ta be readable, it'll try and teach you. Don't feel like you gotta adopt anything straight away, but we don't usually hold stuff too long - n' if it's your first pet, go for an older animal, yeah?"

They could walk and talk at the same time; Alexis was withdrawn when they spoke, didn't gesture much, but something in their tone was demonstrative. And it'd probably all just work out -- they liked Vespertine, inasmuch as Alexis liked anyone at first glance (which. wasn't much).

"I don't think I'll rush into anything," she agreed. "But older animals, definitely."

She followed Alexis toward the kennels. They weren't the most talkative, but she could feel at least that there was no hostility between them. With Alexis, that seemed to be enough.
