Barter and Haggle
Prompt 2

Can be used toward Solo or RP req

Lately, the local market places have been filled with new traders offering their wares. It seem as if many across the land are trying their hand at selling clothing, weapons, and trinkets. With so many new faces, now is the best time to go to the market and barter for the best prices.

So go ahead and grab your goods or grab your gold and take a shot at bartering.

This prompt can be played from either side: your character can be the merchant, or can be looking to purchase an item. Groups can RP with both characters on the same side, or trying to barter with each other.

|| You can also use this opportunity to test out the new Item Crafting system!
|| If you use an item that you have successfully crafted with the new system (you do not need to have customized the item) as the item in your prompt, you will earn 15exp in addition to the versatile point. Please provide a link to the crafting thread in your character's first post.
|| If you choose to craft an item for the event, the attempt must have been done after the prompt opened (February 8th), and all requirements must be complete for it to count.
|| As always, the crafting system is intended for stage 2+. Younglings and prentices will not be able to try for the extra exp.
|| If you choose not to use a crafted item, you will only receive the versatile point credit.

In the months since Yael had been invaded, tensions had calmed considerably, at least among her regular acquaintances. Mosi's suspicions had only grown, but she kept her personal thoughts on this matter from her family, her mentor, everyone. The would-be treasure hunter stuck to her caves, her hoard of gems growing almost too large to store in her room as she dulled her frustration and fright by delving deeper and deeper into the earth. It was easier this way. If she spent too long around other Yaelians she just knew she'd say something she'd regret. It was a wonder she'd agreed to go to the market today at all.

For all that she'd made a point of secluding herself, Mosi hadn't been able to avoid the rumors swirling around Pajore, some of which she had assumed were true simply because of their frequency. The island's giant... guests were called Alkidike, and they had been exiled from the mainland for something presumably horrible. Even so, they hadn't come into the cities, not even to pillage and steal. Her own people had ventured off of Yael's shores as well, many never to return. She wished them well, she supposed, maligning their stupidity in the same thought.

Mind still swirling with dark notions, Mosi's mood didn't have far to fall as she rounded the corner and entered the bustling square. She wasn't one to fear large numbers of people, but she'd been so long away from a proper crowd that she sneered a little at all the bodies piled together anyway, at least until she noticed the mainlander. The disgust turned to unease in her gut, brought on by the man's eerily smooth skin and webbed ears. Unnatural. Unwelcome. She was stalking closer before she could stop herself, thin fingers clenched in bloodless fists.

"What are you doing here?" she shouted, stunning the elderly trader who had been speaking to the mainlander. "Who invited you?"

He turned a salesman's grin on her, orange eyes far too bright for her island. "Apologies for disturbing you, young lady, but surely you have mistaken me for someone far more sinister. I am a humble trader, not a conqueror. Perhaps you'd like to take a look at my wares?"

She prodded at the jeweled bracelets and baubles he had on display, sure that they would crack and fall to powder like the fraudulent disgraces they were. But her finger met the solidity of a proper gem, and she looked down curiously before touching it again.

"What is this?" She hadn't meant to say it aloud.

"Sunstone. From what I understand you have it here as well, it's just not as vibrant. Pretty in its own way, but more subdued."

Mosi couldn't disagree with that. The thumbnail-sized stone at the center of the silver necklace was brighter than most she had see and as orange as the man's eyes.

"I want it. What do mainlanders use for currency?"

He chuckled. "Whatever you do, I'd assume."

"Here, then." Reaching into her pouch, she pulled out a handful of gems she'd termed "medium grade" and held them out in a shaky hand. When he reached out and took a few of them from her palm, she only flinched a little.

"This will do." He held them closer to his face, giving them a quick appraisal. "You find these yourself?"

Mosi nodded. She grabbed her new necklace and stored it carefully in her satchel, along with the gems he hadn't taken.

"I did. It's what I do."

"You do it well. For a Yaelian." He chuckled as she turned her glare back in his direction. "I'm only kidding. You know, we folks from the mainland aren't frightening. There's no need to feel anxious."

"This is not anxiety," she muttered, determined to counter everything he said. She hated that the mainlanders were here, with their smug expressions and superior attitudes, and she especially hated that their goods were so damn intriguing. She reached out her hand without thinking, running her fingers across another stone, this one bright red. With a courage fueled by anger, Mosi pushed her glasses farther up the bridge of her nose and raised her eyes to his. "I'll give you three of my azurite for this. My best azurite."

"Five and a kiss, and you've got yourself a deal."

"Four, no kiss, and you keep your teeth."

He stared at her until she lowered her gaze, that stupid smile on his face the whole time. It was only after she had handed over the promised gems and made it home with her prize that she allowed herself to smirk, basking in the celebratory satisfaction of her small victory. While the azurite she'd given him was above average, it most definitely wasn't her best. Take that, mainlander.
