Dhan showed up for work on time, because he'd known that most of his Saturday was going to be forfeit to his new job and he'd had the foresight to set an alarm. (He spent a good ten minutes confirming it was right, and then double-checking, and then... yeah.) Anyway, he showed up on time, and he got right to work as Nasir instructed, but that didn't mean his brain wasn't back in the studio working out a complex drum line. Before he'd, you know, flunked every single English class he was in, he'd been in the school orchestra as a percussionist; now he just sort of. Did his thing? And if that meant tapping out a rhythm on the side of the bowl he was washing, then... that was what that meant. With the bowl clean, he dried it and passed it back to Nasir for wing-tossing purposes. Dhan was very, very good at chopping up herbs into regular-sized little pieces, and so that was what he was doing between orders. That, and humming. A lot. Quietly, but still. He had to get this drum line down.

Saturday was fairly busy and Nasir was glad for the help in the kitchen. The wings are incredibly popular and most wanted to try out some of the newer sauces he had come up with. Dhan was, in short, a godsend. Nasir was in the process of the latest sauce into the bowl, wings into it next, before he was pausing a moment to really listen to what the other had been tapping out. Dhan had been humming for a while, in between the bits of conversation they had, and honestly it sounded good. "... that's pretty good," he finally said, unable to resist commenting. "The beat, I mean. It's solid. I like it."

Dhan smiled at the pile of cilantro he was busily plucking stems out of. "You think? It's not refined yet, but I think it's going somewhere." Hopefully that somewhere was somewhere good. Like, Dhan knew his musical skill could be relied on, but even he could heck up somewhere down the line. "I was working on it before I came. Something about the percussion line is off."

"Well what I've been listening to is pretty good." Nasir was still flipping wings around in the bowl, covering them with sauce until they were even. "Reminds me of someone I actually follow online. They're pretty amazing."
His fingers were idly tapping out the beat. He really only had an ear for rhythm, not more than that, and his singing voice ... Best left not mentioned. Wil was the one who could sing, not him. "Start from the beginning again and I'll really listen?"

If Nasir had asked Dhan to show off any other skill he had, he would have politely demurred. But he loved his music, and he knew he was good, and he said, "Sure, but remember this is just the main line and the chorus," before starting over from the beginning. (The sharp sounds of a knife hitting the cutting board as he chopped things subbed in great for sharp percussion.)

"Sure, sure," Nasir nodded, just a little bit eager to hear. He liked music, was perhaps guilty of sometimes playing something in the back when there was no one else here. The knife did make for a great addition and the other man was quiet for a moment after Dhan finished.
"It sounds good!" He rubbed at his cheek, getting a smudge of sauce there that he had to wipe off with a towel. "Maybe somewhere in the middle right before you started going heavy with the knife it was ... off?" His nose wrinkled up and the wings were set aside for the next step. "I can't think of how to explain it. It still sounds good but it's not got the same feel?"
Not the best at describing his thoughts about music. Nasir only hoped it came across.

Dhan nodded. "Yeah. You've got a good ear. That's the part I'm trying to fix. I'm thinking... I might split off the second part, the percussion bit. And develop that some more separately?" It was kind of like a recipe, but six or seven times more annoying... maybe... only not really. He scraped cilantro into a small plastic container and put it back in the line cooler, wiped his knife clean. "Okay, what's the next order?"

"Ah, someone wants the atomic cheddar jalapeno poppers." Nasir leaned to squint at the order, blinking once and then again to make sure that he was reading it clearly. There was nothing wrong with the text, his vision was just a little blurry. "Must be a smoker," he muttered to himself. The only people he knew who really wanted to eat those things were people who smoked or did not value their guts.
The wings were ready to cook and he was moving to hand Dhan some peppers to slice open while he went to make a breading (fresh food all the time, it was one of the lures). "Sounds like a good idea to focus on that one bit. Get it down solid and they maybe reintroduce it. I like it, it's just not fitting in yet with the rest of what you have going."
He rubbed at his cheek, getting something else there on his cheek and not noticing it this time.

Dhan nodded. "Or maybe they're used to spice?" He grinned at Nasir; Dhan had no problem with the atomic cheddar jalapeno poppers, or... pretty much anything that wasn't pure capsaicin. He'd grown up with his dad's cooking, though... if it didn't make his eyes water, it just wasn't hot enough yet. He sliced and cleaned the peppers, passed them back to Nasir in exchange for a nearly-empty plastic bin of cheese. "Yeah. Wish I had more time to work on it, but I want to get the album done by this Friday, and with school and work... I have to get the liner notes to my sister too..." Hana had always spellchecked his work for him, and it was easier to get his thoughts onto the paper when he knew they'd be checked later. Also, she never made fun of him for file names like 'Imen-netes.txt'. By now, Hana knew what he meant. "Not that I'm not happy to be here," he added. "I am! Just... I wish I could drop out already."

"Maybe," Nasir agreed, "I mean I like them but even Borr makes a face at them." What kind of spicy things Borr liked and did not like never seemed to make any kind of sense. Not to him anyway. "Ah, slice up the bacon?" His head tilted towards the bacon, while Nasir took the peppers and rolled them around in the breading. Dark eyes glanced over at Dhan, biting the inside of his cheek a moment in thought. Obviously there was something going on but he had not exactly pressed to find out yet. Dhan was great to work with and there had been no problems. "Can't you ..." he wrinkled his nose up and started again. "Is there anything you can do?" Test out, something that would get him out of school and doing what he wanted. Nasir had gathered that school was a sore point and why wouldn't it with Dhan being as old as he was and still in high school.

Dhan shook his head. "Not really," he sighed, bending over the bacon and slicing it up very carefully, but also quickly because there wasn't much time to waste. "I could try to test out, but... I have problems with tests, and they don't exactly give, um. Extra time for just being bad at stuff. Dad says it's better to get the actual diploma anyway." Not like Dhan would ever be able to do anything with it. Like, there was a reason he focused so hard on his music, besides being hecks of awesome at it.

Nasir frowned again, rubbing at his cheek to get rid of something he had left there with his sleeve before filling the jalepeno halves with a mixture of cheese and spices. The bacon slices were picked up as Dhan had them ready and wrapped around them. "I didn't like it, to be honest." He glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. "All the steps to getting an actual diploma. I moved around so much that it wasn't exactly easy to keep track of my school records ..." He wrinkled up his nose and then sighed. "Not the same but ..." A shrug. "I guess if there's anyway I can help? Let me know. Especially if it'll help you be able to do the thing you enjoy doing more often." Nasir grinned. "Since what I'm hearing is pretty sweet."

Dhan grinned back. "I dunno, it's pretty cool to meet someone who likes my stuff and isn't my sister," he said. "It gives me hope that I can make a career out of this one day. Not the, uh, the cooking, but the music." (He sighed a little wistfully. Music.) "What bands do you like," he asked, turning to his next task.

"You are talented at cooking but music is your love? Your art." Nasir turned his attention back to finishing up the poppers so that the order could get out. "I can understand. I want to make a career out of all of this." His hand waved to gesture to what he was doing and the entire kitchen. "So I get it." When asked about bands he was quiet a moment. Thinking. "Ah, Studio Killers, Mystery Skulls, Marina, Bastille ..." He rambled off a few bands. "Not just those but that's what I've been listening to lately. I like hearing new things." He also supported some artists on patreon but sometimes people thought that was weird.

Dhan grinned. "I love Marina," he said. "I did a remix of some of her songs, actually. If you give me your email I'll send it to you?"
