It was dusk, and time to take his nezubat colony out for a walk before bedtime. Some of them would likely want to stay out a bit longer, but he could just leave his window open so they could get in. The nights were getting a bit warmer, and he had plenty of blankets and no roommates to inconvenience.
As he watched sweet little Echo take off after Uniform, with Zulu and Bravo close behind, he felt a twinge of envy. It must be nice to be a nezubat. You got to fly around and just be a bat. No worrying about classes or what to do with their lives. Freddy was getting older, almost a junior, and he still didn't know what he wanted to do when he grew up. It wasn't like there wasn't anything that interested him! He liked hanging out with friends, running around with Nef and getting up to mischief. That wasn't a choice though. He didn't think he had any particular skills. He did about average in all his classes. He supposed he liked gym class best, cause they got to run around, but how was that supposed to be something he could do in life?
Freddy hummed softly as he walked through the slowly darkening evening, enjoying the cool breeze while he pondered. He liked art, but he held no pretenses that he was any good at that. Not enough to do it for a job. He was pretty good at math. He liked nezubats and oranges... Surely there was something he could do with that!
He considered the possibilities. He'd heard of people called breeders, who worked with certain familiars to make even more cute familiars for others to enjoy. Maybe he could do that? He was pretty good at handling nezubats already, though Bravo and Zulu were still grumpy when anyone else tried to come near them. Still, it was something he could probably do! Oranges... Well they were very good for you and smelled amazing. He could learn about other foods that were good for people to help them know what to eat? Hmmm, maybe if he couldn't think of anything else. He'd rather just deal with oranges. What if he grew oranges? He'd have to learn how to do that, cause it was probably way harder than keeping a pot in a plant alive. But he could grow oranges, and sell oranges, and maybe do others things with their scent, once he figured out how to get it. Trees probably took a while to grow, so he might have to get started now.
Suddenly Freddy stopped, struck with a genius idea. What about both?! The nezubats could live in the orange trees and fly around to catch insects that would bothers the trees, and get lots of exercise and be happy! And he could still get the oranges! Oooh, but what about when it was cold. Maybe he'd need to build a shelter instead, so they could safe cozy and safe in bad weather? Struck by motivation, Freddy raced back to the school, Uniform and Echo trailing in his wake. If he was lucky the librarian would still be in the library and could maybe help him find the books he'd need to learn things!
