She can't help the small voice that's saying in the back of her mind; slow down girl, you need to survive.

But neither can she keep biding her anger on tiny keys with foreign symbols. Stormy- Lina isn't going to leave. Chel's an angry child but she wonders if Lina is just a bit more so. She's only ever seen the girl peripherally; in dreams, in conversation, in Jack's memories, in Nevada's group of friends, in the Mark on the Door.

Can't kill her. Can't avoid her. Confront her: like everything else. Confront Caelius. Confront Merlin. Fighting is her kneejerk reaction- Chel's scrappy. She can take another hit if she needs to.

She was already on sparring duty, leaning against one of the fence posts with Tenebrae shrugged over a shoulder. She pockets her phone and says a silent apology; sorry love, but just this one time.

< It was about time she was goaded into it. >

Breathe. Step forward. Quell the shaking in your hands. Dispel the guilt. Forget the fear. Thane would breed anger in her, but the jar of her heart is filled already with the mix used for missions, steady and all but solid when cooled. Approach. Remember instructions. Execute.

But what was the goal exactly? Win, and nothing is learned. Lose, and be spited probably.

Stormy was not one to confront things head on, it had always been her flaw. It was why she ran away when she could, why she kept her socialization to the phone or to small meetings in person, one on one if she could. Actually fighting with someone over something...And Chel, of all people. (Forget the fear, breathe, step forward.) One of the few people on the island she had never tried to consciously follow, now the person she had to meet face to face.

The great sword was out once she reached the training field, and it was easy to pick Chel out as a vibrant color against the snowy landscape. Stormy kept her gaze level, if not focused on something past the other's shoulder. The crunch of snow under her boots seemed too loud, her tensing muscles too present at the front of her mind.

She waits, unsure of what to say.

And fight over what exactly?

An outsider's view; jealousy.

An insider's view; jealousy.

But they were two different kinds.

Stormy looked small next to her weapon, next to the white that engulfed her. Chel barely had more than the minimum layers, but her blood was already hot.

(and maybe at some point they could have shared in the snow, could have laughed the way she and Abbi did. Such a small, fragile thing. Chel almost felt sorry for her. Maybe she did).

She pulled Tenebrae from her back by rolling her shoulder forward. It would have been much cooler to say nothing and begin the fight, but Chel was a loudmouth always speaking out of turn, always biting herself in the a**. "S'prised you showed up." Her lips curled, not in a snarl but in her usual smile that somehow managed to look like a snarl. All teeth and poised to snap.

Me too, she almost says. But instead it's, "Why wouldn't I? You asked for a fight. Fair I give it to you."

"Fair," Chel repeated with a snort.

As the long range player she should have fired first, but Chel struck an usually open stance. An invitation: come get me.

The invitation went unanswered. Stormy raised her weapon, one hand on the large, spiked handle, the other braced against the blade itself, ready to turn and adjust as best an unwieldy weapon could. She didn't need both hands to hold it up anymore.

"I wanna know why, though."

"Don't you always?" she chattered back. Chel raised her bow and squinted one eye shut. Stormy didn't take the invitation; coward.

A direct shot, to the center of her clavicle, just below the soft part of her throat. Maybe Stormy had come to ask why, but Chel didn't need a reason. She had come teeth bared for a fight, not a compromise.

It bounced off her greatsword, but this at least didn't go ignored. Faster than one would expect with a heavy weapon, Stormy darted forward and swung. Compared to Jack, she was quicker on her feet but less dextrous when it came to attacks; the bulk of her weapon was used in wider sweeps to compensate.

"Always," she echoed back.

And maybe it's because Stormy's caught her on a bad day (or is it a bad day because Stormy's caught her?) but the single word "always" sets her off like no other.

The sword rocketed towards her but Chel thrust her bow forward in time to intercept it. Two hands on the metal on either end of Tenebrae and a sword inches from her face. Not an unfamiliar feeling from Jack's sword, but heftier, meatier. She preferred Owain.

Without needing to draw it, an energy arrow flung forwards past the greatsword, this time aiming for her shoulder.

It stuck and it stung and it dispersed across her shield. Seemed immobilizing her bow didn't stop the arrows from coming; would be a bad weapon if it did, she supposed.

Stormy grit her teeth as they wrestled for a few seconds, half trying to push Chel back and half trying to disentangle her blade without becoming vulnerable doing so. It was hard either way; she trained, but she was no Sun, and her less than healthy habits gnawed at her strength in protracted fights. Eventually she managed a compromise and broke away, sword trailing in the snow briefly before she picked it back up.

"Was he really the one who left that mark in the door?" she asked, moving sidelong now, watching her warily.

As Stormy released, so too did the pink haired hunter. But Chel had momentum and it left her leaning on her toes. She was ready to fight. Don't disengage.

"No," she said sincerely, but with a lick of a smile on her face. Good. Finally it's out in the open. Finally Lina gets a ******** clue.

"It surprise you to find out not everyone on th'island thinks yer a goddamn angel?" she asked in return. She could already hear Stormy say no like she was some kind of deep philosopher.

< Forward. >

And for once Chel and Tenebrae were perfectly in sync; she hurtled forward and brought her bow down like a sword. No playful tricks, no airy dodges. Today she wanted to destroy.

And she wasn't the only one.

< Put this ghoul in her place, then. Or will you let one more slip out of your grasp because it is too weak? >

Clang. It was easier to act if the bow was wielded like a sword, to continue swinging in reaction rather than to be proactive herself.

"No," Stormy replied with a hint of strain from the fight. "No-one's an angel." Clang. "It surprise you I wanna know why about that too?"

Chel elected to respond with nothing more than a grandiose roll of her eyes, even mid-recovery from the parry.

She could already tell her usual tactic of knocking her opponent over wasn't going to work; Stormy's balance was bound to be killer if she could handle such an enormous sword. Chel's training as a sun hunter still hadn't really worn off.

So instead Chel did the unpredictable and hunched her shoulder forward; not enough to knock Stormy over but enough to put the girl on her heels. In such a position Chel could lean back and let nine arrows at once to Stormy's chin do the talking.

< Only strength can overwhelm this stubborn nak. Use me. Prove you are worth something. >

It was the strikes to her chin, along with the constant egging, the phantom image of Chel's toothy smirk, the barbed responses over so many weeks and months, the knowledge that she'd always be someone's target no matter what she did, and so much more, that caused the frayed end that was Stormy to finally just snap.

Righting herself with a frown that seemed to darken her face, Stormy narrowed the gap between them again. Thane glowed an ominous purple, and when she swung again the friction of metal on shield ignited the oily substance along its jagged edges, causing an acidic explosion large enough to catch them both. But Stormy was more than used to it by now--pain would always be accompanied with the attack, but the brief high of power all but balanced it.

She couldn't feel bad. Chel had been egging her for far too long. There wasn't enough room in the jar for something more compassionate.

She should have known the purple glow meant something big was coming. She should have known by the feral look in the other hunter's eyes that this wasn't a fight that both of them would walk away from.

Yet she leaned forward and she invited the burn the same way she'd leaned forward and invited the sword in the first place. They both needed some kind of validation that such a battle was not only desired but necessary. Pain seemed an appropriate evaluation.

She can hear Evan in her head now, teaching her how to defend. Stick your arms up, elbows in. Keep the sharp bits away from your face.

But she ignores it because if they're doing this, they're doing it. This time she pulls the arrow back with her own hand and feels the heat against her busted lip. She's on the ground and she can feel the icy snow starting to get to her, but her finger releases and the arrow flies anyways.
