The local gardening coalition was having a guest lecture that day, and Mehtab was admittedly, interest with more how each time they did this, there was free food and raffles for gardening supplies and giftcards. But the name of the Lecture: 'Aquaponics and You' sounded cool. To him, if it could help him not have to buy groceries or end up killing all his plants, he was good.

The lecture was at the library, in one of the medium sized rooms that lacked any decoration. It had just a projector, a dry erase board, and a butt load of chairs. A few people milled about while the head of the group talked with a woman who was likely the speaker. Looking for a place to sit, Mehtab smiled as he noticed his fellow garden to save the important green enthusiast.
"Hey Jackson. Haven't seen you in a while? Kill anything recent?"

Jackson was always a whore for free food, and even more so for the chance to win even more free food, or at least things that would lead to food, like gift cards and a lecture on hydroponics, which would hopefully lead to him being able to grow more than just herbs and radishes at the moment. Baby carrots would be nice, maybe even a pepper plant at some point.

When Mehtab saw Jack, he'd probably notice the man was busy shoveling some plastic wrapped cookies into a backpack, with one of the pastries already stuffed in his mouth. Hurriedly finishing the cookie and his petty theft, Jackson gave the other a bashful grin. "Ey, Mehtab. How's it goin?" Another cookie slipped into his sleeves.

"Killed anything? Mmm...not really, 'cept for some kids trying to steal my tulip bulbs." Absolute deadpan.

Jackson had the right idea. Stock up while you could because you never knew just when food wasn't going to be had. Plus snacks were expensive. You got hardly anything for five bucks- or, you got junk that didn't fill you and just sent you into cravings. Personally though, Mehtab was looking more at the peanut butter crackers.

"Loading up, good plan. But I feel ya. It's been a pretty good winter. Not crazy- but really up and down? Almost made my herbs drown. Anyway, things have been ho hum. Came cuz it sounded good plus food and swag. Hard to pass that up." He had a few onions he'd brought to ask if anyone wanted to trade or buy one. But that would be after the lecture- or....

"Bought some onions today if you're interested." Mehtab smirked.
"If you might want to trade?"

Bartering 2k16.

He had onions in his coat pockets because why bother with backpacks.

While Mehtab went for sustenance, Jackson was more of a quantity man.
Calories were calories, and macronutrients were something only rich people could afford to care about. He didn't survive off the cookies and pastries from these meetings, but they made for a good quick fix. "Mm, that's why I like my window boxes - lowers the chance of drowning. Plus I don't have to put pants on to get some basil."

Jack's hands lazily began shuffling free perennial seed packets into his pack. "Onions? How'd us- nah, not gonna ask." He snickered, filching a few sugar packets from the coffee stand.

"Yea, I can use some onions; whatcha lookin to trade them for?" Jackson slid his pack to the ground, opening one pouch chock-full of herbs, sprouts, and miniature peppers. "My purple basil gave off a good bit of crop."

"You put pants on? Friend, pants are optional." Mehtab looked around then backtracked. "Well, optional in one's own home. In public I think you'd get arrested."
Looking at Jackson's stock Mehtab pulled out one fair sized onion and held it out, eyes still fixed on the peppers- and oh dang that basil.

"How about three peppers and a bit of the basil. It'd make for a good sauce base. Think I can swing by one of the co-ops and get a few tomatoes... If they have any." Winter hadn't been exceptionally harsh, but it had been rather difficult in the fluctuating temperatures. It certainly had kept Mehtab on his toes.

"Anyway, you know anything about that uh-" A gance back to the projector, "Aquaponics?"

"Sounds fair. I've been wanting to make some French onion lately." Jackson locked his lips, picking some of the nicer peppers and herb bundles, dropping them into Mehtab's hands, swiping the onions into his bag with lighting speed. He could make some nice stock, too, with the skins and the stems of his herbs.

"The co-op's are alright, a little low on oranges and most citrus. Hope you're not susceptible to scurvy." Jackson barked, a little too loudly, at his own joke. "Maybe they could learn a thing or two about this whole aquaponics thing." He shrugged, nodding his head to the chalkboard up front. "Just know that it's a way to grow without soil; could be a good or bad thing.
Can't use compost, but don't have to worry about bad minerals in the soil patch."

The deal was done.

"I tend to just go buy lemonade. Bad I know, but I like sour drinks. Plus it's cheaper than buying a ******** ton of lemons myself." He answered being 100% serious about catching scurvy.

Herbs and peppers packed away, Mehtab gave a hand wave. "Yeah, but if you bring your compost to the community gardens you can apply for that tax break. All I know is that its about water and so I hope its like, how to raise fish? I'd love a way to just have fish everyso often without making myself go broke."

Sitting down the speaker seemed to be getting ready.
"Still, gotta stay or else we'll get side eue for grabbing the food and ditching."

Jackson laughed, clapping Mehtab on the shoulder. "Well, friend, it would be great if your guess is right. Don't think a gardening store would be teaching us how to raise edible fish, though." He meandered over to the seats, reserving one for the other man. "And it's not like these people don't know us as 'those guys who show up for the free s**t' anyway."
