User ImageSekayi was happily lounging on a large flat rock that he'd found.

He had all four limbs stretched out across the rock as he basked in the sun. Earlier that morning, he'd gone on quite the successful hunt if he did say so himself and had stuffed himself accordingly. It wasn't everyday that he caught something bigger than a small pig, so he took advantage of his luck when he could.

Staring at the clouds he absently wondered how his family back home were doing. It had been so long since he'd left home that he was sure many things had changed since his youth.

Sighing a content sigh and closing his eyes for a moment, he let the drowsiness set in for a moment and wondered how the rest of his day would go.

Things had not been going well for the scrawny, malnourished and clearly abused lioness recently. After meeting a lioness she was convinced was a Goddess in disguise—humorous as that was considering she'd never believed in that sort of thing before—who had helped her find easy prey to bring back to her demanding father, that prey was quickly snatched right out of her mouth by a frighteningly aggressive male who claimed to be born from the Storm, whatever that meant. After losing the meal she had worked all day to catch, returning home to her sire empty of paw had been another, even more unpleasant ordeal. Her punishment had been harsh and she had not been invited to eat when her brothers returned with an antelope they had tackled together.

Maybe it was for the best. With his belly full Semanggi had been too sedate to beat his useless daughter any worse than he already had. It left Menthe with some time to herself until she was called upon again to answer whatever bidding the panda colored lion saw fit for her.

Dragging her exhausted figure through the brush was becoming more and more difficult with every step until finally, she collapsed, bone tired and aching from several fresh wounds in the brittle, straw colored grass. Close to a rock where a golden lion was sunning himself, though she wasn't alert enough to notice. Puffing bleakly. I don't think I can move another inch.

Sekayi's eyes flew open as he started suddenly.

He thought that he'd heard an odd sound coming from nearby. He hesitated for a moment before he sat up and cautiously looked around for the source of the sound. If he wasn't mistaken, he could have swore that he'd heard the sound of something falling to the ground, but he couldn't immediately see anything in the vicinity that looked like it had fallen.

His curiosity peaked, he slowly stood to his feet and began to climb down off of the rock. Walking into the tall grass, he only got a few feet away before his paws hit something that was definitely not dirt and felt very much like a body. A chill ran through him and he feared what he would find when he saw what he'd run into. However, when he looked down, he gasped to find a lioness that looked very much worse for the wear.

"Hello? Are you alright?, " he asked immediately in concern, what could have happened to this poor looking lioness?

Her color is fine, although I have to admit that I wouldn't be able to read paragraphs in it XD

With her paws tucked under her chest, Menthe laid her chin upon the ground. Perhaps it was dangerous to lay in the open, but she didn't care, eyes closing heavily. At least she had the freedom to enjoy the cool breeze that ruffled the grass around her and the warmth of the sun on her pale back. Maybe if she lay still long enough the ground might swallow her up and she could live under the dirt and give life to the scrubland. She liked to think that the spot where she lay might be more green and lush than all the land around it, but it was a self-indulgent thought at best.

Menthe felt the sun turn to shadow before she heard the startled gasp, opening her eyes and lifting her head abruptly to stare—with much surprise—at a handsome golden lion staring back at her with an expression that made her want to hide under a rock. He looked horrified.

I.. yes. I'm fine! A quiet voice stammered in her hurry to get the words out. I'm.. I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone else was here! I-I-I'll go away. Though despite her offer, she wasn't yet ready to will herself to move.

And that is why I only do color for when they talk! xD

Sekayi was surprised to find the injured lioness to say the least. He couldn't believe when she'd offered to leave. To him, she looked as though she couldn't even move.

"Don't worry, I'm not here to hurt you, I just wasn't expecting to see you," he said, and after a moment noted, "You don't look very fine to me..."

So, Sekayi sat by the lioness so that he was a comfortable distance away but could still speak with her and tried to think of a way that he could help her.

"My name is Sekayi," he spoke deciding that it was best to introduce himself first, "Are you hungry?"

His reassuring words seemed to visibly ease the little lioness who tipped her head to glance down the length of her body. Her pelt was soiled with dirt, blood and new, ragged tears from her father's claws and teeth. She was disheveled and thin, her fur hanging on her bony frame like it wasn't the right size. He was right, she didn't look fine.

Having the decency to be embarrassed about her state of disrepair her eyes fell to the ground beneath her awkwardly, managing to mumble an only half-hearted “Well, I am”.

Menthe flipped her tail slowly when the unfamiliar lion offered his name. It sounded foreign to her ears. That might have also explained the slight accent she sometimes heard in his words. It made the mint colored female wonder where he was from. Hello, Sekayi.

Testing out his name was fun, her pale blue gaze slowly lifting toward him, hesitant, her expression clearly wary, though she couldn't deny the truth when her belly growled in response for her. I... y-yes, maybe a little.

Sekayi hoped that he wasn't frightening the lioness, but he just couldn't bring himself to leave her on her own in the state that she was in. Smiling, the male felt like he was making progress in gaining the female's trust when she returned his greeting, even temporarily.

Sekayi knew that she had to be starving, he'd never seen anyone so thin.

"Well, no sense in going hungry, there's pretty good game around here, I'm sure I can find something for you. I had a pretty big lunch, so I don't think I'll eat much more today," he said with a casual laugh.

Deciding to give the lioness a break from his presence, he trotted off to find something easy to catch to bring back to her. It didn't take him long to sniff out and run down a fat mongoose that was scurrying through the grass.

Once he had the creature in his grasp, Sekayi trotted back to the lioness and dropped the kill before her, hoping that she would accept it.

Menthe had been relying quite heavily on the generosity of strangers lately. She knew it to be true and felt ashamed of herself for not being strong enough to take care of herself, but for all her embarrassment her empty belly seemed to know no pride. Of course, it didn't hurt that a handsome lion had taken notice of and offered to cater to her, she certainly wasn't used to that and couldn't help basking in the attention of the friendly male. A small ripple of pleasure sliding down her spine when he laughed though she wasn't sure what to say or rather, how to say it.

By the time the pale lioness had opened her mouth to thank him, her hero was already gone. Dung beetles.

Rolling to lean gingerly on her side, Menthe huffed softly. Maybe she should have followed him, it felt like Sekayi had been gone forever. A number of unpleasant scenarios began to march through her mind when the sun pelted stranger reappeared with a fat mongoose. It was a wonder he could catch something that small and slippery with such a large body, an only half believing expression on her face as the kill was lain before her. It was hard to believe that anyone would feed her—at least not without expecting something in return as Semanggi did. Her voice hesitant, W-what... uhmm, what do you want.. in return?

"I know it probably seems weird to you," he conceded as he sat by her, "but I am only trying to help you. You seem like you've met quite a bit of unjust misfortune, and what I really want is to not watch you die out here."

Sekayi spoke with a light tone but meant every word. The lioness didn't strike him as being a terrible person that would bring the wrath of others upon herself. Nor did her wounds speak to a recent fight she'd been in. She looked beaten...

"It gets pretty dull out here on my own sometimes," he shrugged, "How about if you accept my fine offering, you will allow me to tell you about my old home in the Bonelands!"

End in next post?

Menthe considered the idea that, maybe, she should have been insulted by the fact that he thought she was in such a poor way that she might die if not cared for like a helpless cub. After giving herself a forlorn once-over though, she realized that his conclusion was only natural considering her current state of poor condition. It was her own fault really. Even if she wasn't about to keel over any time soon, she hadn't really made any strides to try and make herself more presentable—and shouldn't she be appreciative of his concern?

That was new.

Shifting her weight sheepishly in the dry bed of grass, the pale female bobbed her head with an agreeable nod. The smell of the still warm mongoose carcass made her nose twitch eagerly. The Bonelands? Repeating the name incredulously, it certainly sounded like a pretty ominous place, Menthe nodded again. She had already begun to pluck the fur off the kill she held between her paws. Okay, I'd like to hear about it, your old home.

Despite a number of questions that rallied inside her head—like why it was now his old home—she stayed quiet and attentive. Clearly curious to learn more about parts of the world she might never see.
