Eury preened, her eyes on her reflection in the still water of the pond. Winter had finally been slowly thawing the the small pond that had previously been iced over, had settled into a still blanket of water. It sparkled in the morning sunlight and the air was still, making it an almost perfect mirror for Eury to give herself a good inspection. Her thick winter coat had started shedding early, leaving her usual shiny glossy coat in a minor disarray to her greatest anguish. She had coaxed a good brushing out of the two-legged companions but this was her first opportunity to inspect herself. She turned herself around again, eyes focused downward to watch her reflection.
She finally reached down, nosing at her leg where some of her coat had been fluffed out unattractively, carefully smoothing it out as well as she could. She carefully inspected her mane and tail, making sure each careful curl was in place. Her flowers were still bright and perky, having been carefully maintained through the winter, but she could see the edges fraying, tinged darkly as they started wilting. She would have to make the trip south to replace them soon; she hated it when they weren't just perfect.
She nudged one of the flowers on her tail a little to the side before inspecting herself again. She hummed in satisfaction, her lashes fluttering in a moment of happiness. What a wonderful day.

Veluri had chosen that day to wander aimllessly, restless hooves giving hint to a restless mind. There were many things that kept pace with him in his head, but the movement helped, and he always knew what direction home was. It was just that... home was feeling less and less like the place he was supposed to be. He was still a young stallion, by most others standards, but he was grown now. Wasn't it time for him to find his own way.
It didn't help that trying to find his own way in the past had always lead him down the wrong path, throwing him random and quite terrifying encouters with Soquili who had no faces, and ones who looked completely normal, but seemed cruel to the core. Was everyone he was fated to meet going to be like that? Or would he finally meet someone fun and interesting. Not scary or manipulative.
Vel wasn't really leaving it up to fate this time. Making sure to be out only when the sun was up, even if it was still a little cold from lingering winter, and never ever venturing into forests. Ever.
Tugging at the cloth around his body, he stopped to get his barings. The tabard cloth was thin enough to wear during the summer, but surprisingly, it helped him maintain a comfortable state in the early spring air. He'd been walking for some time, apparently, leaving behind familiar plains and streams to find himself someplace new in the morning light.
And to find someone new, apparently. Veluri paused only for a second, making sure the black cloth fell properly over his golden coat. The sunlit color of his coat always made him feel especially comfortable when the sun was high. He felt a connection to it he really couldn't explain. Not that he tried too, or even mentioned it to anyone. It was just one of those things that kept pace with him inside his head.
All the more reason to meet the mare standing my the pond. She was dark coated, sure, but the other's he'd run into had either light or dark coats, and it meant nothing as to their personality. Besides, he didn't think someone cruel would wear such pretty flowers.
With a enticing smile, he approached the mare, stepping carefully to make a bit of noise so as not to spook her. "I don't think it will do you justice, that reflection." Vel fell into his old habit of flattery the moment he opened his mouth. "After all, when someone is so lovely, all imitations pale in comparison."

Eury stopped her grooming at the sound of footsteps, half turning to catch sight of whoever the new stranger was. Her wings fluttered in anticipated, ready to spring out at any moment in case she needed to fly off at a moment's notice. She had never had any trouble with strangers before, but one never could be too wary, she thought.
She settled down however, as she caught a full glimpse of the handsome stranger to meandered by. She preened a little under the compliment, always happy to hear her looks be appreciated. She returned his smile with one of her own, her lashes fluttering coyly. "Why, good sir, you do know how to make a mare blush," she cooed in return. "But," she continued, light and teasing, "I can't say that you are wrong."
She took a step to the side, finally facing the stranger. She could feel her mane gently blowing in the wind, the curls likely blowing attractively to frame her face. "Do you have a name to match that handsome face of yours, stranger, or are you going to leave a girl hanging?"

Vel laughed at her response, thinking that finally, there was someone who got it, that a compliment wasn't a Lifemating proposal. He grinned and stepped up to the water to get a drink for a second, letting the situation roll around in his head as he quenched his thirst, careful not to let his muzzle get too wet and drip unattractively. This could be quite fun. Raising his head again, he regarded her with a smirk.
"I would never say something just to make a mare brush." He tossed his head a little, the length of his mane shifting and shimmering. "Nothing but the truth out of me, dear." He winked, grinning. It was true, mostly. He wouldn't lie to a mare about her appearance. That wouldn't be gentlemanly, and he did try to be a gentleman about everything.
Spooky things in dark woods did not count. Nothing to be a gentleman about there, just hopefully not get himself killed. There were some strange Soq about, that was for sure. Shaking off those thoughts, he brought his attention back to his lovely companion for the moment, perhaps the day? They would just have to see, wouldn't they?
"I would never leave a girl hanging either, especially one as pretty as you. It would just be... unforgivable." With a bit of a laugh, he sketched a bow on introduction. "My name is Veluri Sinat'lis, if it pleases you. But please, don't stand on ceremony. Call me Vel." He pitched his voice a little lower, eyes lighting up with amusement. "After all, I would hate to be on such formal terms with someone the wind loves enough to make even being stirred by a breeze a beautiful act."
He raised one eyebrow in query, wondering what she was going to say and do next. This was fun, an enjoyable way to meet someone knew, someone who knew that the sunlight was good, someone who didn't skulk in the shadows like it was normal, and someone who seemed to just enjoy being in the company of others, rather rather that making it their life goal to scare the life out of anyone they came across.
Yes, it was possible that he was a bit fixated on some interactions he had as a foal, but they were scarring, and he had not had enough pleasant encounters with others to put them firmly out of his mind. Perhaps this lovely mare would help him with that, give him a lazy afternoon of flirtation without expectation, make some good memories in the sunlight to replace those made in the dark.
"And what might I have the pleasure of calling you? Surely, you have a name that rivals your beauty. No, one that enhances it, brings it to the fore, makes you seem transcendent." He cleared his throat as if he was embarrassed, ducking his head a little. Vel wasn't, but it normally seemed to work well for him when he pretended that he did. "Perhaps you might do me the honor of speaking your name?" Word count: 509
