Moshe taught him everything he knew about making jewelries, and when Mendel was seven He succeed already to make simple Jewelries.
For a long time Mendel was a single child, and his parents thought that God have decided that they will have only one child. But when Mendel was ten Rivka gave birth to a girl, Ethel. At first Mendel was jealous with the attention his newborn sister got. But soon he got over it and start loving his sister very much. Five years later another sister were born, Sarah, and the family was very happy.
All this changed in September 1, 1939. The Germans invaded Poland, and conquer it within three weeks. Soon came the order: All Jews must leave their houses, and move to the ghetto.
Moshe succeed to sneak his working tools into the ghetto, But couldn't get any materials to work with. And even if he did no one in the ghetto could have afford himself to buy jewelries. Instead, Moshe and Mendel went every day to work in the potatoes fields. They got a small salary for their work, and sometimes succeed to sneak into the ghetto some potatoes. All this didn't prevent hunger, but allow them to live. But soon the hunger, the density and the poor sanitary conditions took their price from the family.
Ethel was the first. She was infected with pneumonia in the cold winter of 1940. Rivka did her best to treat her, and Mendel and Moshe flipped upside down any market, both legal and black, in their attempts to find a medicine. But they failed. And one day they came back home and found Ethel lying on her bed, cold and silent as a marble statue, Rivka and Sarah near her, their eyes red from tears.
Even in their deep grief they had to think forward. They knew it will be just a matter of time before Sarah will be the next. And there was only one way to prevent it.
One night, Mendel and Sarah sneak out from the house. Hiding in the shadows rom the soldiers that patrolled in the streets, they succeed to arrive to a hole in the fence. The woman they contact already wait for them there. Sarah went out through the hole, which was too small for anyone but someone her age, holding a golden necklace, the last one they had, as a payment for the woman. She snatched Sarah the moment she got outside of the ghetto, and ran with her. Mendel ran back home, half blind from tears. He succeed to arrive home, and the three of them cried together and prayed for a better life for Sarah, and that against all chances they will meet her again.
Although their deep sorrow, their life became a little better now that they had two less mouths to feed. But only a few months after Sarah was taken Rivka was infected with Tuberculosis. And once again, like a chorus, came the desperate search after a medicine, the failure, and finding the dead body of the last woman of the family.
Now it was just the two of them. The pain was almost unbearable. They were sitting near the dining table silently, barely touching their food, and never found the power to even talk with each other. But it didn't took long before Moshe got sick as well. Now Mendel couldn't have go to work at all, as his father needed a daily care, And they barely had anything to eat. And just when they thought it can't get any worse, came the order: All the Jews from their street must leave their houses tomorrow, and get on the train to an unknown destination.
