He ran out, and like any other occupant of Deus, when you ran out, you hit the bar. He had been a social drinker back when he was in college, but that kind of carefree, your-life-is-ahead-of-you attitude was dead here, and he didn't have much of a group of classmates here who wanted to associate with him outside of office hours.
Walking in, he ordered a whiskey and beer to follow and sat down with both at the bar, rubbing his eyes under his glasses before deciding just to take them off and place them in his coat pocket. No need for reading here.

Al took a clean rag and wiped the bar down, carefully going around Melvin and then back around him again. This was his not-so-subtle attempt at getting the other man's attention. The night was slow and dragging on, in fact Melvin was the one even presently sitting at the bar it seemed.
Also, something was clearly bothering him.

Melvin was not the type of person to get between someone cleaning, so upon Al's return to wipe the counter, Melvin took his glass and bottle of beer and held them up so he could wipe them down.
He took a drink of his whiskey as he glanced at him. It was good that Rep was as much a guy serious about his alcohols as he was, and glad he could get high tier whiskey here. The bar was a blessing. Seemed silly to look back and know he had wanted to burn it.

Al sighed exaggeratedly and plopped an elbow on the freshly cleaned bar to prop his chin up and squint at Melvin, about 50% less subtle than before.

Melvin looked at Al with a slow confusion dawning on his features as he set his glass and bottle down and then glanced behind himself just to rule out that Al wasn't looking past him. Seeing this wasn't the cas, he looked back.
"What are you doing?"

"Waiting for you to acknowledge my existence." Al stood up again, pulling his elbow off the bar top. "I know it's been a while but the least you can ******** do is say hi, thanks for my drink and no outright drown in your ******** mire of self loathing."

He blinked a few times at that kind of reaction and set his glass down. "Sorry. Hello, Al. I didn't mean to ignore you."

"Ta," Al crossed his arms and slumped into them atop the bar counter. "It's been a while Melvin, you seem... different." He meant to say depressed.

"I guess...things are different. Lots of things have changed. Is it obvious...in a bad way?" He asked, holding the glass in both his hands just to feel the cold seep into his palms.
"It has been a while. How have you been?"

"No exactly in a good way," Al admitted with a forced little smirk. "I'm alive so there's only so much I can complain about."
His eyes wandered to the drink in Melvin's posession, "You?"

He finished the whiskey and set it back down, having skipped actually sipping it to just downing it rather quickly since receiving it. He went over to pop the cap to the bear off and set the glass aside.
"There is plenty to complain about aside from just being alive." He said with a smile before it slowly fell back down.
"Um...alive too. Just....dealing with a lot of changes." It was all too personal and it felt like a clique to be talking to the bartender. Was he that kind of drunk?
Maybe he needed another whiskey.
"Oh, I did start talking to Rep again. Been hoping we could mend things...even if he doesn't approve of a lot of things I do." Or more specifically, people.

"At least he's talking to you," Al turned away from Melvin to grab a glass and pour whiskey into it. He turned back around and sat it on the bar. "What sort of changes?" He nursed the freshly poured drink. Sorry Melvin, not for you.

He stared at the glass a moment wondering what had happened that caused Al to go straight for the whiskey almost as eagerly as Melvin had when he sat at the bar.
"Just.....um.....relationship stuff." He said vaguely, tilting his bottle a bit to watch the foam inside turn.
"You....aren't talking to Rep? I thought you two were close."

"Rep is the one not talking to me," Al corrected. "Apparently he doesn't think we were ever close at all," he curled the side of his lip, flashing a canine before taking a bit more than a sip off his drink. Apparently relationship issues were contagious right now as everyone seemed to have at least one.

"Really? You punched me in the face when he left. That seems close. Why did he think that?" He asked, glad to focus on other problems than his own. Al was a lifesaver.
