Saerun had been assigned to partner up with some kid she'd never even seen attend class before. For a group project. Didn't teachers know that group projects were useless??? She'd just end up doing it all by herself, that was for sure. Still, she might as well try to contact the person... The teacher had given her their email, so as soon as she got back to the house (after greeting everyone) she got onto the computer and sent off a message.
Hi, I'm Saerun, we're supposed to work together to make a presentation about the solar system. Can we meet and talk about it?
There. That should do it. Honestly she hoped the kid never responded, then she should just do it alone and not worry about the awkwardness of meeting someone one on one...
Kaname had been very sick again, and their parent had decided to keep them home from school. It was almost a week straight! They missed being around their classmates, even if they didn't really talk to them. Thankfully their teachers were kind enough to send their homework home with their Zizi, otherwise they'd be so behind... The science project had made them a bit nervous – they'd never met his partner in the short time they had been attending, so hopefully they wouldn't think too badly of them.
They were already browsing online when the email notification popped up. Blinking sleepily, they navigated to their inbox and gave it a quick read... ah, she wanted to meet up... They doubted their Zizi would approve, though...
Hi Saerun, it's nice to talk to you. I'm Kaname! I can't meet up, I'm sorry. I'm really sick so I have to stay in bed. Can we talk on a messenger?
My screenname is CrescentEyed on instamessage.
They sighed, then sent off the reply, hoping Saerun wouldn't be too mad.
It didn't take long to receive a response, surprisingly. She sighed to herself, a bit bummed that they'd responded at all.... Opening up the message, she quickly scanned it over, mouth forming a small frown. They were so sick they were bed ridden? Okay. Maybe she shouldn't judge so quickly... She didn't have that program, though. Before replying, she went ahead and downloaded it (forgetting to ask if it was okay, whoops!) and then made herself an account...
The screenname stumped her for a bit... but eventually she settled on something, and then added the name Kaname had mentioned to her contacts.
abyssalHeist: hello?
No response.... at least, not immediately. Maybe she was busy? Or had sent it on her phone, or something? Oh well. Kaname switched tabs to continue watching the documentary they'd been sort of listening to, but then stopped when their messenger began blinking in the bottom corner of the screen. They moved their cursor over to it, and then clicked. Squinting, they read over the name... That wasn't any of their friends... Maybe it was Saerun?
CrescentEyed: hi! Are you Saerun?
They tapped out the message carefully, listening to their computer read it back for them before they hit the enter key. Sometimes having misshapen pupils was a hassle...

Oh, good. They responded. Saerun sighed in relief, glad they'd gotten the right person after all. Now what...? Should she just... respond to the email through here...? Probably.
abyssalHeist: yep, that's me. abyssalHeist: i'm sorry your sick, that sounds terrible. Hopefully you'll get better soon? I haven't done a project like this before but I think we can figure it out... abyssalHeist: you can call me sae btw.
There, now that that was out of the way, they could move forward and get this project out of the way.
Oh, it was her! A small smile came to Kaname's mouth. So she wasn't mad they couldn't meet up. That was a relief... Carefully, they began typing back...
CrescentEyed: its okay, I get sick a lot. I just have poor health... but thank you for the well wishes! CrescentEyed: its not very hard, I have to do this a lot! Did you have anything you want to talk about in particular?? CrescentEyed: okay!! that's good to know. Sometimes I just use screennames... yours is really cool, by the way!
Kaname almost wished they had a nickname they could give in response, but they'd always just gone by their first name... Or Cres.
CrescentEyed: my online friends call me cres for short, so you can use that too if you want?
There, now they had something to offer up.
Huh... poor health... That just sounded miserable. Saerun was happy that despite her own... issues... she had a pretty good immune system. It was just her teeth that were bothersome – always in the way and painful to get caught on...
abyssalHeist: really?? that's too bad... abyssalHeist: oh good. I was worried it was going to be hard. I'm not really good at group projects anyway. abyssalHeist: um... not really? Maybe we can talk about cool moons? No one talks about moons...
Ah. They preferred going by their screenname, then? She supposed she could call them that, it really wasn't any different from a real name, was it?
abyssalHeist: thank you. I like yours, too. What's it from?? if you don't mind me asking. And okay, i'll call you cres.
So far Kanam-- Cres seemed really friendly. Maybe this would turn out to be her preferred method of dealing with projects from now on...
Was she not good at group stuff because other people let her down, or because she let people down....? Either way, Kaname wasn't going to ask. In the off chance that it was the former (or something worse!) they didn't want to stir up any negative feelings on the matter. Besides, even if she did disappear, it would be fine. Kaname could handle putting things together on their own just fine.
CrescentEyed: its okay, I have it down pat! I can make us an online document to keep track of things, and a presentation, too. So then we can both add stuff to it when we're able. CrescentEyed: thank you! Its um..
They paused – they weren't really ashamed of having mutations, but they'd already run into some people that thought poorly of it...
CrescentEyed: I have crescent-shaped pupils, so that's where I got it from, haha. But I like the idea about moons! Maybe we could talk about the one they've been talking about in the news a lot?

Crescent-shaped pupils.... Saerun blinked, rereading the sentence a couple of times over.... Yes, she'd read it correctly. Kaname had mutations? Or at least, one mutation? That hadn't been expected...
abyssalHeist: you have a mutation? abyssalHeist: um, I mean, I have them too. A few of them. So that's why I was asking. abyssalHeist: and that one sounds good, I don't know a lot about it.
Hopefully that tiny blunder wouldn't be too much of a damper- but if Kaname really did have mutations, maybe they could ACTUALLY be friends? Not just project partners?
Oh. She was asking... Wait. She had them too? Kaname blinked-- had they met any other kids with mutations yet..? No, they hadn't.
CrescentEyed: yeah! I have two. The eyes and I have wings on my ankles. CrescentEyed: do you mind if I ask what you have? CrescentEyed: oh! I can find some of the articles if you want to read on them. Um, i'm not very good at talking so... do you mind if you do the talking part of the presentation?
They'd just... have to try really hard to be well enough for the presentation itself... it wasn't for another two weeks so hopefully by then this latest bout of unhealthiness would be over?
They had wings, too? Huh... That was pretty cool by Saerun's book, at least as far as mutations went. She liked her ears, and her eyes – it was her teeth that she hated.
abyssalHeist: ankle wings sounds really cool. abyssalHeist: oh, its okay. I have um... my ears kinda look like fins. And I have slit pupils – but I dunno if they're gonna call that a mutation anymore since I heard that's normal for bakeneko and naga? Idk. But um... I also have really big teeth....... abyssalHeist: so I usually just sign. Because it's kind of hard to talk. abyssalHeist: do you think we can get around the talking part since neither of us is good at it...?
Hopefully they would... she could[ talk but she ran the risk of accidentally catching a lip or her tongue in the process.
It sort of sounded like maybe Saerun's mutations were a little more inconvenient than their own... Especially the teeth one. Surely the teacher would have something they could do, instead of speaking?
CrescentEyed: wow! That sounds really cool, sae. I've never met any other mutants before. CrescentEyed: maybe we should ask the teacher what they want us to do before we start doing stuff... hm... CrescentEyed: surely they'd allow some kind of option. CrescentEyed: do you ever get really sick? I... was curious because none of my other friends do and I heard my Zizi talking to a doctor about mutations and sickness and stuff...
Maybe Saerun also got sick frequently – that could be another thing that they have in common!

Cool? More like hideous. At least in the teeth department. She found herself shaking her head, exhaling a sigh through her nose.
abyssalHeist: its not really that cool. Most people can't stand looking at me for very long. abyssalHeist: uh, cres, you know that's kind of a bad word to use... abyssalHeist: kind of makes us sound like we're monsters... abyssalHeist: which I guess can be true, maybe. Idk. But anyway I have three siblings with mutations. Adopted siblings, I mean. My parents didn't mean to wake them up. abyssalHeist: I can ask the teacher tomorrow.
Kaname... didn't seem to have much tact... She frowned to herself, wondering if they were just disconnected from the world because the were sick all the time. abyssalHeist: no, I don't really get sick like that. But I heard it happens sometimes because most kids that wake up in october don't make it, so sometimes the ones that do suffer for it.
Maybe she was being a by jaded, but it was true.
Wait. Mutants was a bad word? Kaname hadn't thought of it like that... Zizi used that word all the time with them when they were explaining things...
CrescentEyed: my zizi uses that word for me. :c is it really bad? CrescentEyed: I don't think we're monsters. We're just like everyone else! Maybe a little different, but that's okay. Everyone is different. CrescentEyed: are you adopted or are they adopted? CrescentEyed: ah! Sorry, that was rude, you don't have to answer that one...
Now they were a little worried... had they already upset her? They hadn't meant to be offensive... hopefully she would explain what she meant...
Aha, so they really were just sheltered. But really, their own parent used that word? She rolled her eyes, then started typing her responses.
abyssalHeist: yeah, a lot of people use it because it makes us sound bad. abyssalHeist: I mean I guess its okay if we use it but I wouldn't want someone who doesn't have one to use it... it's rude. abyssalHeist: oh, i'm adopted. My parents woke me up on accident too and couldn't stand it. abyssalHeist: I got adopted last year so that was nice. abyssalHeist: are you adopted?
Well, since Kaname had asked, she might as well return the question...
They supposed she had a point... maybe they'd ask their Zizi about it next time...
CrescentEyed: oh... okay. I guess that makes sense. Maybe i'll just not use it then, just in case. I don't want to upset anyone. CrescentEyed: ohh... i'm sorry that happened to you. That sounds like it was painful. CrescentEyed: nope, i'm not adopted. My zizi takes care of me by themself! CrescentEyed: is your new family nice?
Saerun seemed kind of... sour, about this topic... but they really did want someone to talk to about it... While they were waiting for a response, they reached over to grab their water bottle, then downed some of it in an attempt to get rid of that terrible sore throat...

At least Kaname had decided to stop using it for now. That was good... it would probably cause some panic attacks down the line or something.
abyssalHeist: its okay. I don't think about it a lot. I just wish they were more responsible. abyssalHeist: because if they'd just waited then I wouldn't be like this. abyssalHeist: but I guess if they had I wouldn't live here, so I dunno... abyssalHeist: mmhm, they're really nice. I have a lot of siblings... too many siblings sometimes, I think, but they love all of us equally so its nice. abyssalHeist: did your zizi wake you up on accident?
Perhaps that was too personal a question, but Sae knew too many people who'd been accidentally awoken... maybe Kaname was different?
They set the water bottle aside, and listened while the computer read out Saerun's responses and questions.... were they an accidental awakening...? They didn't know, really...
CrescentEyed: I dunno, zizi didn't say if they meant to or not. CrescentEyed: but I know zizi is really responsible and wouldn't do something that would hurt me on purpose. CrescentEyed: but i'm glad your new family is good!
Kaname smiled a little, then perked a bit as their door opened – ah, Zizi was home!
CrescentEyed: I gotta go, zizi is home! I'll talk to you later? CrescentEyed: i'll get you the links to the articles, too. Bye Sae!
The signed off – probably too quickly, then set their computer aside for Zizi to start helping them up...
So they didn't know... didn't think to ask? Sae had asked. As soon as she realized what was wrong she had asked... oh well. It seemed like Kaname had to go, anyway, and too quickly for her to respond. At least she didn't have to worry about the project for now. She signed off of the messenger, then pushed herself away from the desk. It was about dinner time anyway... Hopefully whatever it was would be something she was in the mood for.
